Norwegian Progressive Master, Wobbler Gives You An Ear Candy Of Classic Prog Vintage Sounds, And Challenging Spirits With Masterpiece “From Silence To Somewhere” !!

DISC REVIEW “FROM SILENCE TO SOMEWHERE”

In Lingua Mortua, Tusmørke, White Willow

Q1: This is the first interview with you. First of all, could you tell us about yourself? What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?

【LARS】: I grew up sneak-listening to my older brother’s LP-collection which contained Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Yes, The Doors, etc. When i was around 14-15 i discovered bands like ELP, King Crimson, Genesis, Van der Graaf Generator, Gentle Giant, Änglagård, etc, which made great impact on my musical taste which shapes into Wobbler.

Q2: So, Lars, your keyboard, synth sound and technique is really fantastic. I love your nostalgic, human-warm, organic soundscape. I also know you are eager vintage keyboard collector. So, What inspired you to start playing piano or keyboard? Who was your hero at that time?

【LARS】: When i was 9 years old i saw the movie «the Goonies» where the kids had to do a «puzzle» by playing the right notes on the church organ made of bones. So naturally i thought if i ever came in that situation, i’d better know how to play the keyboard. So my grandmother gave me a Casio-keyboard (which i still have) for my 10th birthday. Small keys, which came in rather handy years later when i got my first cembalo, which has rather small keys as well. The biggest keyboard-hero in the beginning was Ray Manzarek (the Doors) and Rick Wakeman.

Q3: Let’s talk about your newest album “From Silence To Somewhere”. 6 years and half have been passed since your previous release “Rites at Dawn”. Actually, Wobbler was formed in 1999, but there are only four full-length. It can not be said Wobbler is prolific band, is it? haha.

【LARS】: We don’t have any deadline, so we don’t need to rush anything. Also we want to make sure we release as good music as possible, and that can take time. After Rites at Dawn was released in 2011, Morten (guitarist) quit, so we went into some sort of depression as a band. Eventually we found Geir Marius Bergom Halleland, whom we grew up with – so he has much of the same musical background as the rest of us; which is essential to us. Anyway, when he joined we were a full band again, and we began to record in 2014 and slowly now and then worked on the album which was finished early 2017.

Q4: “From Silence To Somewhere” is a 4 track album with 3 tracks between 10 and 20 minutes and one that comes in at 3 minutes. And Wobbler keep creating such a great epic since debut-full “Hinterland”. It’s not said to be “Commercial”, but definitely we love your way! Anyway, how is your usual writing process? Do you intend to make such a long song from the beginning?

【LARS】: Thank you. This varies. Sometimes it is planned, like «From Silence to Somewhere» was supposed to be an epic track from the beginning, as well as «Hinterland». What often happens though, is that the songs keep growing and getting longer and more elaborate as the whole band works on the material. This time we included a jam-song on the album as well; «Fermented Hours» was something we jammed one late evening at Andreas’ country house. We had the house for ourselves, and filled the living room with instruments, food and wine.

Q5: “From Silence To Somewhere” may have a concept about wondering view on metamorphosis, change and alchymism. And it seems to be a bit of a continuation from your previous album “Rites at Dawn”. Are they band’s long pursue themes?

【LARS】: Since Andreas joined the band in 2009 he has been the main lyric-writer, and he has very into those themes in everything he does and is.

【LARS】: Andreas

Q6: Musically, certainly there are some influences from 70’s great prog acts like King Crimson, Yes, Genesis. But also, “From Silence To Somewhere” has more diverse aspects. Definitely, it’s more dark and intense record, like Anglagard, Anektoden, and more eclectic like Italian prog. I really love your flamenco and renaissance influences. Could you please talk about your new ground and inspirations with this fantastic record?

【LARS】: Those bands you mentioned are important, as well as PFM, Museo Rosenbach and Il Balletto di Bronzo. As well as Gryphon and pure Renaissance-music. I’m also a huge fan of Santiago de Murcia (Rolf Lislevand has some great records with his music; specially «Codex» with the fantastic teorbe and portative organ). But, yeah this album is perhaps a bit darker. Rites at Dawn was quite uplifting and positive, full of life. The song «Rendered in Shades of Green» was actually meant to be the outro for Rites at Dawn, but it was too dark. So that became the song that set the mood for this new album. It was inspired by the 1979 version of Nosferatu.

“Rendered in Shades of Green” は実を言うと “Rites at Dawn” のアウトロとして書かれた楽曲なんだ。

Q7: Mellotron, Harpsichord are off course, clarinet, recorder, many vintage instruments are used in the record. In fact, sometimes I remind Jethro Tull. Definitely, it’s a amazing retro orchestra, and no more digital productions. What made you stick into that kind of instruments and production?

【LARS】: I do have quite a bit of analog synths from after 1975 (like the Prophet-5, Roland VP-330), but i decided i still wanted an early 70s sound for this album as well which is something we’ve done since album 1. There’s something about the period 1967-1974 that tickles my ears in everything from the analog sound of the recording, to the great-sounding instruments of that period. It sounds timeless to me, much more than a new soft-synth that becomes outdates within months.. It’s very important to us to use the real stuff. One plays a real mellotron in a totally different way than the new digital version. It sound much more alive. The digital version is like a computer which always starts from zero when you play it. A real mellotron behaves like an grumpy uncle, and you never know which foot he has risen with this morning.
Exactly these Wobbles and imperfections is what i like about the mellotron and minimoog.

Q8: So, Leprous, Ihsahn, In Vain, Major Parkinson, and you, Norway seems to be a crossroad of prog between modern and retro. Have you been acquainted with them? What’s your perspective about the Norwegian scene?

【LARS】: I haven’t heard those bands, even though i’ve heard about them. I know Ishahn’s band Emperor, and the vocalist/keyboards in Leprous auditioned for Wobbler’s vocalist before we got Andreas, and i know they’ve been Wobbler-fans for years. But the underground prog scene in Norway is very good these days with bands like Wesebergland (Ketil plays flute on our albums), Jordsjø (Håkon plays flute with us live), Tusmørke, White Willow, and Arabs in Aspic to mention a few. Lots of cool stuff brewing here these days. Lots of prog-festivals and bands and fans, so that’s nice.

FIVE ALBUMS THAT CHANGED LARS’S LIFE

KING CRIMSON “IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING”

In_the_Court_of_the_Crimson_King_-_40th_Anniversary_Box_Set_-_Front_cover.jpeg

It was perhaps the first album i heard where i aware that this is called «progressive rock» or «symphonic prog». I was around 14 years old and life was never the same again.

EMERSON, LAKE AND PALMER “TRILOGY”

Trilogy_(Emerson,_Lake_&_Palmer_album_-_cover_art)

Never knew there existed that great music with just a 3 piece band (and no guitar). Great inspiration.

YES “FRAGILE”

Fragile-4

An album i’ve been listening to since i was a child. Still do! Love every aspect of it. Also love the crisp sound of the drums, the trebly bass (even though the sound of The Yes Album is perhaps my favorite-sound of the band, and Close to the Edge the favorite Yes-album).

アルバムで言えば、”Close to the Edge” がフェイバリットだし、サウンドは “The Yes Album” がベストだけどね。

ANGLAGARD “HYBRIS”

220px-Hybris_Cover

I remember driving through the Norwegian forest listening to the album for the first time, and that was a fantastic goose bumps-moment. Cool to hear the archaic sound, where one mixes renaissance music, 70s prog and Swedish folk, which has definitely been an inspiration for Wobbler specially in the early days.

KRAFTWERK “COMPUTER WORLD”

Kraftwerk_-_Computer_World

-Kraftwerk «Computer World». A while after i discovered the «prog world», i discovered the «computer world». Though it’s not that easy to hear in the music of Wobbler, it has had great impact on me. Also albums such as «Trans Europe Express» with the great Orchestron-sounds. I use the Optigan quite a bit on «From Silence to Somewhere» which is sort of an homage to Kraftwerk, so i guess there are some Kraftwerk in Wobbler as well..?

“From Silence to Somewhere”

MESSAGE FOR JAPAN

10172769_738883982824276_2278094745987991244_n

I visited Tokyo and Kyoto (and Kinosaki) during the cherry blossoms this year. My first visit to Japan, and what a great place! Very friendly people, polite and in some ways a bit similar to Norwegians. And of course the culture, food, gardens, temples, hot springs, you name it.. I want to come back again and this time bring the whole band so we can play a concert or two.
