90年代、日本はハードロック、メロディックロックの一大保護区でした。グランジ/オルタナティブ全盛の海外で見向きもされないような HAREM SCAREM, FAIR WARNING, TEN といったバンドがブレイクし、MR. BIG のようなアメリカでは”終わった”バンドも大人気でした。勿論その弊害としてグランジ/オルタナティブの評価が遅れた事は残念ですが、良いメロディーを持った良いバンドを守ったのは確実に日本でした。ただそういったバンドにも翳りが見え目立った後進も現れなかった２０００年代以降、このジャンルは日本でも過去の遺物として扱われる事が増えたような気がします。残念だけど仕方がない TERRA NOVA の1stでも聴いて余生を過ごすか・・・と思っていたあなたに朗報です！！NYC から現れたニューカマー、STATION は本物です！ビッグなコーラス、フラッシーなギター、そして胸を熱く焦がすようなメロディー。VAN HALEN + DEF LEPPARD + SKID ROW がファーストインプレッションでした。大げさではなく彼らなら死に絶えた HR を復活させてくれるかもしれません。BURRN! の幅さんがNYに飛ぶ気配もないので弊誌が独占インタビューです。どうぞ。
【INTERVIEW WITH CHRIS LANE】
Q1: Debut album “Station” is just released!! How are you feeling now? And how are the reactions?
【CHRIS】: We are incredibly happy with this album. It’s truly the first time that anyone can get a true understanding of what Station is all about without seeing us live. I feel that because it has so much music on it, it really paints a picture of what we do.
So far, things are going really well. We’ve released two music videos for the album with more on the way. The best part is having music fans, like yourself, find out about the music and become interested in learning more. It hasn’t been out for a week yet and we are already on the charts for radio in US. We’re all ecstatic.
Q1: デビュー作 “STATION” がリリースされましたね。現在どういったお気持ちですか？また反響はいかがでしょう？
【CHRIS】: 信じられないくらい幸せだよ。ライブを見なくても STATION がどんなバンドか誰でも完全に理解できる機会は全く初めてだからね。アルバムには沢山の音楽が詰まっているし、そこには絵画を描くように僕たちを記したからね。今のところ、とても反響は良いよ。アルバムから2本のMVをリリースしたしもっと増えるだろう。最高なのは、君のような音楽を探したり、もっと学びたいっていう音楽ファンを持てた事だね。リリースされて一週間くらいだけど、すでにUSラジオチャートにランクインしているんだ。僕たちはみんな有頂天になっているところさ。
Q2: So, “Station” really knocked me out! It reminds me Van Halen, Def Leppard, Skid Row or something like 80’s main stream rock! Are you aim to these bands or music like that?
【CHRIS】: Haha, well that’s not bad company to have. We’re really not trying to do anything but be ourselves. We are influenced by SO much music. We love 80s rock don’t get me wrong, but I think the album also shows where we come from in the sense of how we got into rock. Personally, Pink Floyd and AC/DC are big ones, Pat likes a lot of music that is much heavier than my taste, so I think a little of everything comes out when the four of us get together to make music. That’s what makes Station sound like Station, it’s us taking our influences and taking it somewhere else with our own personal taste and thoughts.
Q2: 実際、”STATION” は素晴らしいアルバムですね！ VAN HALEN, DEF LEPPARD, SKID ROW といった 80 年代のメインストリームロックを想起させます。そういったバンドを目指しているのですか？
【CHRIS】: ハハ。彼らの仲間になるのは悪くないね（笑）僕たちは誰かを目指している訳じゃなくてただ自分らしくありたいだけなんだ。影響は沢山の音楽から受けているよ。勘違いしないで欲しいんだけど、僕たちは 80’s ROCK を愛している。ただ同時にこのアルバムは僕たちがロックにのめり込むきっかけとなったバンドの影響も反映していると思うんだ。個人的には AC/DC, PINK FLOYD が大きいね。PAT も色々聴くんだけど、僕よりもっとヘヴィーなものが好きみたいだね。結局、4人の影響が少しずつ集まって僕たちの音楽になっているんだ。それこそが “STATION” を “STATION” たらしめているんだよ。
Q3: I was surprised about “Station”, because there is no young band doing this kind of music now. Do you want to rebirth strong 80’s sounds to music scene now?
【CHRIS】: We want to take music to the next place. I think it’s no secret that the rock and roll genre is taking a backseat to a lot of other genres right now. It’s cyclic and there will always be periods of time where one style of music is less popular than another. That said, we like to think there are elements in our music that everyone can grab on to no matter what genre you favor; rock, pop, country, metal, really anything. It’s about creating something that people want to make theirs and share. That’s what it’s all about.
Q3: こういった音楽を若手がやる事は珍しいですよね。80年代のサウンドを現代の音楽シーンに復活させたいという気持ちはありますか？
【CHRIS】: 僕たちは音楽を次の段階に持っていきたいんだ。これは秘密でも何でもないと思うけど、ロックンロールというジャンルは現在他の多くのジャンルに押しやられている状況だ。全てにサイクルが存在し、あるスタイルの音楽には必ず人気的な終わりがある。つまり、僕たちの音楽には ROCK, POP, COUNTRY, METAL, 本当にどんなジャンルを好きだろうと気に入られる要素があるって思うんだ。
Q4: Are you digging bands like Winger, Firehouse, Extreme, Mr. Big??
【CHRIS】: How can you not?!?!? Haha. We love those bands. We’ve had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Eric Martin from Mr. Big. He joined us on stage in New Jersey one night. We also played with Extreme at Rocklahoma 2014, which was very cool.
Q4: もう少しマニアックな WINGER, FIREHOUSE, EXTREME, MR.BIG といったバンドはお好きですか？
【CHRIS】: ありえない？！？！ハハ、大好きだよ。MR.BIG の ERIC MARTIN と共演出来たのは楽しかったな。彼はニュージャージーで一晩ステージに参加してくれたよ。EXTREME とは ROCKLAHOMA 2014 で共演したけどとてもクールだったね。
