EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH André Andersen of ROYAL HUNT!!
ROYAL HUNT set to come back to Japan again on April 2016!! André Andersen talks about Loud Park, Japan, “Devil’s Dozen” and more !!
先日行われた “Loud Park 2015” でも完成されたシアトリカルなパフォーマンスでメタルファンを魅了したデンマークのベテラン ROYAL HUNT。早くも2016年4月の再来日が決定しました！！
90年代の中盤から後半にかけて、ROYAL HUNT はここ日本で非常に人気の高いバンドでした。阪神大震災の折には “Far Away” という楽曲を日本に捧げてくれたこともありましたね。ところが、絶頂期のフロントマン、D.C. Cooper 離脱後も少なくとも音楽的には非常に聴き応えのある高いレベルの作品をリリースし続けていたにも関わらず、バンドは徐々に失速して行きました。D.C. の後任を務めた John West, Mark Boals, 共に実力は折り紙つき。しかしながらバンドはキャッチーさや華を失ってしまっていたように思います。D.C. のシアトリカルでメロディックな歌唱と ROYAL HUNT にはやはりケミストリーがあったのでしょう。
そこにやっと気づいたのかどうなのか、バンドは2011年、D.C. を迎えてツアーを行うことをアナウンスし、名作 “Paradox” の完全再現を含む来日公演を成功させました。以来、D.C. は正式にバンドに復帰、3枚のアルバムをリリースしています。
最新作”Devil’s Dozen” は彼の復帰後最も見事な作品ではないでしょうか？彼が復帰したからと言ってバンドは初期のようなコンパクトで明快な楽曲を制作する訳では勿論ありません。バンドのコンダクター Andre Andersen の成熟した作曲術を味わえる長尺の楽曲群に D.C. の華のあるキャッチーなメロディーを乗せてしっかり今の ROYAL HUNT を主張していますね。”Riches to Rags” ではフォーキーな要素を効果的に導入、新たなファンの開拓にも繋がりそうですし、Jonas Larsen のギタリスト然とした派手なソロワークも非常に魅力的。”May You Never (Walk Alone)” などは90年代の彼らを彷彿とさせる、思わず口ずさみたくなるようなメロディーが白眉です。前作のツアー後に「バンドを終わらせるかも知れない…」と語っていた Andre ですが ROYAL HUNT はどうやら第2の絶頂期を迎えそうな雰囲気ですね。
今回弊誌では、そのMr. ROYAL HUNT, Andre Andersen にインタビューを行うことが出来ました。どうぞ！！

【INTERVIEW WITH ANDRE ANDERSEN】
Q1: How was “Loud Park 2015” ? Lot’s of Japanese Metal fans were excited about your incredible performance!
【André】: It´s been our second time at LoudPark and both times it was a pleasure to be a part of it: the entire festival is very well organized, fans are enthusiastic, the general atmosphere is nice and relaxing and you´ve got a chance to meet a bunch of friends from other bands backstage and watch some of them perform.
Q1: “Loud Park 2015” はいかがでしたか？日本のメタルファンはあなた達のパフォーマンスにとても興奮していましたね！
【André】: Loud Park に出演したのは2回目だったんだけど、どちらも参加出来て嬉しかったね。Loud Park はとても良くオーガナイズされているし、ファンも熱狂的。雰囲気も良くてリラックス出来るんだ。バックステージで沢山の他のバンドの友人達に会ったり、パフォーマンスを見ることも出来るしね。
Q2: So, your Japan tour 2016 is just announced! How are you feeling now? And what made you return to Japan such a short interval?
【André】: We´ve been offered to come back right there, at the LoudPark festival: promoters liked our performance so much (and I´d like to add a big “thank you” to the audience for a great reception) that they asked us to do a couple of shows in Japan and – as we were already planning a tour in the spring of 2016 – it all just worked out.
Q2: 2016年の日本ツアーも発表されましたね！今はどういったお気持ちですか？なぜこんなにも早く日本へ戻ることを決めたのでしょう。
【André】: 実は Loud Park でオファーされたんだよ。プロモーターが僕たちのパフォーマンスをとても気に入ってくれてね。日本で何回かショーをやらないか？って聞かれたんだ。僕たちも2016年の春にツアーを予定していたから、ちょうど良かったね。オーディエンスのみんなが最高に盛り上がってくれたからだよ、ありがとう！
Q3: When you released “A Life to Live for”, you said you might stop the band at Burrn! Magazine Interview. So, we are really pleased to hear your newest album “Devil’s Dozen”. Thanks a lot for continuing Royal Hunt! What’s the reason of carrying the band on?
【André】: Yes, I said that because it became more and more difficult (in recent years) to run the band on the same quality level due to the lack of support and – in case the situation wouldn´t have improved – I felt forced to respectfully decline to continue.I take quality of our albums very seriously and if – for any reason – I´d have to compromise on that I´d rather stop.Fortunately, after lengthy negotiations, our management and record labels solved some of the problems we´ve been facing and – as a result of everybody´s efforts – we´re able to continue.
Q3: 前作 “A Life to Live for” をリリースした時、あなたは Burrn!誌 のインタビューで「バンドを終わらせるかも知れない…」と語っていましたね。ファンは “Devil’s Dozen” がリリースされてホッと胸を撫で下ろしたことでしょう。なぜ ROYAL HUNT を続けるという決断に至ったのでしょう？
【André】: うん、確かにそう言ったね。その理由は特に近年、サポート不足によってバンドを同じような高いレベルで維持し続けることがどんどん難しくなってきたからなんだよ。だから状況が改善しなければ、敬意を持ってバンドを終わらせなければならないと感じていたんだ。僕はアルバムのクオリティーをとても真剣に捉えているし、どんな理由であれ、妥協しなければならないなら止めることを選ぶね。粘り強い交渉の末、僕たちのレーベル、マネージメントは直面していたいくつかの問題を解決してくれたんだ。みんなの努力のおかげで、バンドを続けることが出来ているんだよ。
Q4: Speaking of “Devil’s Dozen”, I think “Riches to Rags” reflects new aspect of the band. Flute and Folk element becomes very nice accent of the album. What was the inspiration of that?
【André】: We´ve always experimented with different musical forms: jazz-y and gospel bits on “EyeWitness”, techno-ish style on “The Mission”, bluesy “U-Turn”, a folky vibe of “Riches to Rags” and so on.Royal Hunt have developed a very recognizable sound/style over the years and these abovementioned little twists and turns are just a part of it as well. We´ve never been afraid to try out new things and make them “ours”… whatever we do we still sound like Royal Hunt… which is a great accomplishment, I believe.
Q4: “Devil’s Dozen” に収録されている “Riches to Rags” ではバンドの新しい面を見ることが出来ますね。フルートを使用したフォーキーな要素が素晴らしく、アルバムのアクセントになっています。
【André】: 僕たちはいつも異なった要素を取り入れた実験的な試みを行っているよ。例えば “EyeWitness” ではジャズ/ゴスペル、”The Mission” ではテクノ、”U-Turn” ではブルース、そして確かに “Riches to Rags” ではフォーキーなヴァイブを取り入れているね。ROYAL HUNT は何年もかけてトレードマークのサウンド/スタイルを築き上げてきたんだよ。前述のような変わった試みもまたその1部なんだ。僕たちは新しい要素に挑戦し、それを自分たちのものにすることを恐れたりはしないよ。どんなものでも僕たちがやれば ROYAL HUNT らしく聴こえる…それこそが大きな成果だと信じているんだ。
Q5: You’ve released three albums since D.C. ‘s return. John West, Mark Boals, Henrik Brockmann… Lot’s of great singers were in Royal Hunt. But I think D.C. ‘s theatrical performance and vocal fits Royal Hunt extremely. Looking back now, do you think his returning was right decision for the band?
【André】: I can´t objectively judge that as I´m very much involved, but according to our fans we did the right thing.
Q5: これで D.C. が復帰してから3枚のアルバムをリリースしたことになりますね。今振り返ってみて、彼の復帰は正しい決断だったと思いますか？
【André】: 僕は関わり過ぎていて客観的に判断出来ないけど、ファンの反応からして正しいことをしたんだろう。
Q6: So, I really wanted to ask you this question so long. Royal Hunt often uses shuffle or swing rhythm in the songs. I think it’s rare for Metal band. But I love that. Why do you take such an approach?
【André】: You mean songs like “Bodyguard”, “Step by Step” or “Heart on a Platter”? Just as I mentioned previously: the “traditional” HR/HM style of today is a little bit too limited for us, we like to be creative and implement different musical elements in our songs – be it shuffle, folk themes or whatever what we might like to explore at any given moment.
Q6: ROYAL HUNT は時折、楽曲にシャッフルやスウィングしたリズムを使用しますね。メタルバンドには珍しいですが。
【André】: “Bodyguard”, Step by Step” もしくは “Heart on a Platter” について言っているのかな？さっきも言ったけど、今日の”トラディショナルな” HR/HM のスタイルは僕たちにとって少し限定され過ぎているんだよ。僕たちはクリエイティブでいることが好きだし、異なった音楽要素を取り入れたいんだ。シャッフルであれフォークであれその時気に入ったものをね。
Q7: Neo Classical, Melodic Metal is not so popular in the music scene now. Do you think there are any possibilities that this genre revives and becomes popular again?
【André】: I don´t know, to be honest, but I know that good music will always find its listener… no matter what style it represents.
Q7: ネオクラシカル、メロディックメタルは決して人気があるジャンルだとは言えませんよね？人気が復活することはあるのでしょうか？
【André】: わからないよ…正直ね。だけど良い音楽ならいつだって需要はあるんだ。それがどんなスタイルだとしてもね。
Q8:Which album is your favorite in your long history? Are you still in touch with former members, like JK, Steen, Allan?
【André】: “Devil´s Dozen” obviously, but if I´d have to look back a little farther I think “Collision Course” is pretty good and “The Mission” didn´t age that much to me.And yes, I´m pretty much in touch with most of our ex-members, we´re still friends and hang out occasionally.
Q8: あなた達の長い歴史の中で特に気に入っているアルバムはありますか？また JK, Steen, Allan といった以前のメンバーたちとはコンタクトを取っていますか？
【André】: “Devil’s Dozen” は明らかだよね。少し振り返ってみても “Collision Course” はとても良いアルバムだったと思っているんだ。”The Mission” もあまり年月が経ったと思わない新鮮なアルバムだね。うん、以前のメンバーたちともよく連絡を取っているよ。今でも友達だし、時には一緒に出掛けたりするんだ。
