DISC REVIEW “THEORIES OF FLIGHT”
Prog-Metal のパイオニアとして歴史に名を刻む、US 出身の4人組 FATES WARNING が新たな名作 “Theories of Flight” をリリースしました！！1986年に “Awaken The Guardian” でジャンルを確立して以降、常に進化を続けてきたバンドの凄みがここにはあります。
2004年からしばしの休息の後、前作 “Darkness in a Different Light” で強靭な新ラインナップと共に素晴らしい帰還を遂げた FATES WARNING。”Theories of Flight” でも “Darkness” で提示した、経験とモダンの融合は見事に生きています。インタビューにもあるように、Jens Bogren を起用したことからも、彼らの現役感、モダンなサウンドに対する拘りが伝わりますね。
実際、アルバムは “From The Rooftops” の RIVERSIDE を思わせるエモーショナルなギター、ボーカルと、アトモスフェリックで空間を意識した現代的なサウンドで幕を開けますし、”SOS” で強調されている陰鬱で、ダイナミズムと浮遊感を感じさせるオルタナティブなアプローチはモダンプログの巨匠 Steven Wilson が PORCUPINE TREE で行っていたチャレンジと通じます。
DREAM THEATER や QUEENSRYCHE といった Prog-Metal の先駆者たちが、その最新作でどちらかと言えばコンサバティブで “Back-to-Roots” な音楽を提示している事実を考慮すれば、FATES WARNING が実に挑戦的でタフなバンドであることが伝わりますね。
また、勿論、アルバムは彼らのトレードマークである、テクニカルなパッセージ、タイムチェンジ、スキルフルな演奏でも満たされていますが、それは作品を彩る一要素でしかないような気がします。中心に据えられたのはあくまでも、”Seven Stars” “White Flag” に象徴されるような、メランコリックでメロディアスなボーカルライン、耳を惹くフック、そしてキャッチーなコーラス。そしてその部分こそ、この偉大なバンドが新ラインナップを得て遂に達成した課題なのかも知れませんね。
アルバムのハイライトは、元々は作品のタイトルだったという、”The Ghost of Home” でしょう。Jim Matheos の手による10分間の大曲は、彼の幼少期の体験を元にしています。9年間で8回の転校を経験し、”Home” と呼べる場所の無かった Jim のノスタルジアとリグレットが楽曲に込められているのです。
ラジオのノイズに導かれ、Ray の優しいボーカルと Jim の暖かなアルペジオが過去への扉を緩やかに開くも雰囲気は一転。奇数拍子をタイトにグルーヴィーに刻むベテラン Joey Vera と Bobby Jarzombek の際立った仕事がアグレッシブなヘヴィネスを創出すると、バンドはリスナーたちをもそれぞれの過去へと連れ去り、それぞれの “Ghost” と対峙させるのです。ノスタルジックなタイトルトラックをポストスクリプトとしてアルバムも締めくくる FATES WARNING 史上最も野心的な1曲は、波打つような音楽のバラエティーと豊かなエモーションをリスナーへと届けるでしょう。
今回弊誌では、さらに表現力を増したようにも思えるボーカル Ray Alder にインタビューを行うことが出来ました。バンドは今年、名作 “Awaken The Guardian” リリース時のラインナップでリユニオンショーも行っています。どうぞ！！

【INTERVIEW WITH RAY ALDER】
Q1: Hi, Ray! Your newest album “Theories of Flight” is just out now! It’s definitely Phenomenal!!
So, I feel “Theories of Flight” is very personal and emotional record. Jim’s solo lyric, “The Ghost of Home” reflects his moving of childhood. Off course, main lyricist, you also touch your big move or change in your life. What’s the meaning of “Flight”?
【RAY】: Thank you for your kind words.. There’s no real meaning to the album. And strangely the lyrics just happened to make so much sense with the title of the artwork for the album. Originally the album was going to be called “Ghosts Of Home” but when Jim saw the artwork entitled “Theories Of Flight” it all seemed to make sense… It tied the lyrics together and created a loose theme for the album. Serendipity I guess…
Q1: 最新作 “Theories of Flight” がリリースされましたね！非常にパーソナルでエモーショナルな作品だと感じました。Jim の手による “The Ghost of Home” の詞は彼の子供時代を反映していますし、あなたも自身の人生における変化を題材としています。まずはアルバムタイトルに込められた意味を教えてください。
【RAY】: どうもありがとう。アルバムに真の意味は存在しないんだ。そして不思議なことに、アルバムの歌詞は、ただ偶然、アートワークのタイトルに大きな意味を持つようになったんだ。
元々アルバムは “Ghost of Home” と呼ばれるはずだったんだけど、Jim が “Theories of Flight” というタイトルのアートワークを見た時に、全ては意味を成すようになったのさ。このタイトルは楽曲それぞれの歌詞を結びつけ、アルバムにテーマのようなものを提示したね。思わぬ偶然だったんだよ。
Q2: Also, the artwork is very impressive. Does it relate to the concept or lyrical themes of “Theories of Flight”? And speaking of artwork, you used Japanese “Origami” in “Darkness In A Different Light”. What made you so?
【RAY】: Thanks! Yes, in a way it does relate to the theme of the album. The idea and image of flight and moving tends to make a lot of sense to us for the album artwork which is why Jim found this particular piece of art so interesting.
For “Darkness” we had so many different ideas for the cover. We wanted something different but subdued and the black swan on the cover of wite fit perfectly. The record company wasn’t very happy with it but we chose to keep it anyway….
Q2: アートワークがアルバムのテーマに関係するとのことですが、実際この美しいアートワークは具体的にはどのようなテーマを持つのでしょうか。また、前作 “Darkness in a Different Light” のアートワークは日本の折り紙をモチーフとしていますか？
【RAY】: ありがとう！そうだね、ある意味アルバムのテーマに関係するね。つまり、フライトと移動をイメージさせるアートワークを使用することが非常に重要だったんだ。それこそが、Jim が特にこのアートに惹かれた理由なんだからね。
“Darkness” のアートワークに関しては、たくさんのアイデアがあったんだ。だけど、僕たちは何か違うものが良くて、完璧にフィットした白地に黒い白鳥のカバーで押し切ったんだよ。レコード会社はあまり嬉しくは無かっただろうけど、僕たちはあのアートワークを選んだのさ。
Q3: Musically, I feel it’s so powerful and emotional record compared with your large discography. The melancholia of your melodies are definitely outstanding. So, how have you evolved since your previous release “Darkness In A Different Light”?
【RAY】: Thanks..The melodies on this album seemed to come very organically for me. As I wrote the melodies I was also writing lyrics, singing them subconsciously… This album was much easier to write for me than “Darkness” was….
Q3: 音楽的には、メランコリックなメロディーが際立った作品だと感じましたが、前作 “Darkness of a Different Light” からどの様に進化しましたか？
【RAY】: ありがとう。僕にとってこのアルバムのメロディーは、とてもオーガニックに浮かんできたんだよ。僕がメロディーを書く時は、一緒に歌詞も考えていて、無意識に歌っているんだ。この作品は前作よりもそういったプロセスが簡単に出来たと思う。
Q4: Theories of Flight” was produced by Jim. Adding that, Jens Bogren, maybe the most busiest producer of metal scene, mixed and mastered the album. What made you appoint him? And how was his input?
【RAY】: Yes, and I think Jim did an amazing job producing this album… Jens was Jims first choice I think to mix the album. We have been using Phil Magnotti for many years now and we felt it was time for a change. Nothing against Phil at all because he’s a great engineer, we just felt that this album could use a different approach to the sound. Something maybe a bit more modern…
Since Jim was producing, Jens had minimal input on the album except for the mix….
Q4: アルバムは Jim がプロデュースを行い、Jens Bogren がミックスとマスタリングを担当していますね。
【RAY】: うん、そして Jim は素晴らしい仕事をしたと思うよ。Jens はアルバムのミキシングにおいて Jim のファーストチョイスだったんだ。
僕たちは何年も Phil Magnotti を起用してきた訳だけど、そろそろ変化の時だと感じたんだよ。偉大なエンジニアだし、彼に不満は全く無かったんだけどね。ただこのアルバムは異なるサウンドアプローチを取るべきだと感じたんだ。何かよりモダンな感じのね。
勿論、Jim がプロデュースを行った訳だから、ミキシング以外で Jens のインプットはほとんど無いけどね。
Q5: Frank Aretsi and Michael Abdow shared guitar solos album. Frank was permanent member when you released “Darkness In A Different Light”. Why don’t you appoint the official lead guitarist now?
【RAY】: Frank has many other things going for him so being a full time guitarist simply wouldn’t work for him… We feel that we don’t really need another songwriter or lead guitarist at this time. I think is doing a great job so far on his own.
Q5: アルバムのギターソロは、Frank Aretsi と Michael Abdow が分け合っていますね。Frank は前作リリース時、パーマネントメンバーだったハズですが…
【RAY】: Frank は他にも色々なことに関わっていて、単純にフルタイムのギタリストとしてはやれないんだよ…まあ僕たちも現時点では、他のソングライターやリードギタリストは全く必要としていないからね。今のところ、彼は自身の仕事を実に良くこなしてくれていると思うよ。
Q6: Anyway, 2016 is the 30th anniversary of “Awaken The Guardian”. Fates Warning played special show with original-album line-up. You joined the band in 1987, so you don’t appear these shows. What do you think about the “Another Warning”?
【RAY】: Ha! “Another Warning”, I haven’t heard that one… I think it’s fine. I wasn’t involved with them back then and I think it’s great that they still have that following to this day.. One thing that’s weird to me is when people call me the “new” singer even though I’ve been in the band since 1987.. Oh well….
Q6: 今年は名作 “Awaken The Guardian” のリリース30周年でしたね。当時のラインナップでのスペシャルなショーも行われました。あなたは 1987年に加入しているので参加しませんでしたが、あの “Another Warning” についてはどう思っていましたか？
【RAY】: “Another Warning”！！(笑) 初めて聞いたよ。面白いね。僕は当時の彼らには関わっていなかったけど、今日でもあの作品が求められているのは素晴らしいと思うよ。
ただ1つ不可解なのは、僕は1987年からバンドにいるのに、未だに”新しい”シンガーと言われることなんだ…
Q7: About the current line up of Fates Warning, all of the members has another bands /projects. You’ve just released Redemption’s new album “The Art of Loss”, that’s also stunning record. So, where is the priority of Fates members?
【RAY】: My priority lies with Fates, and I believe so does Jims. Bobby and Joey have other things that keep them very busy and that’s great. I think that they are happy knowing that the are free to do other things and still have a home here with Fates.
Q7: 現在のラインナップは、全員が他にもバンドやプロジェクトを抱えています。あなたも REDEMPTION で新作 “The Art of Loss” をリリースしたばかりですが、メンバーのプライオリティーは Fates にあるのでしょうか？
【RAY】: 僕のプライオリティは Fates にあるよ。Jim もそうだと信じているよ。
Bobby と Joey は他のことでとても忙しくしているけど、それも素晴らしいことだね。彼らは他のプロジェクトも自由に出来るけど、同時に帰る場所として Fates があることを知っているから幸せなんだと思うな。
Q8: Off course, Fates Warning is one of the originator of Prog-Metal, along with Dream Theatre. You know, you are featured at their show in 1998. So, what Dream Theatre to you? And what do you think about Prog-Metal scene now?
【RAY】: Dream Theater is a great band, I don’t really listen to them much anymore, but I recognize a great band when I hear it…
I don’t really listen to prog-metal much, in fact it’s hard for me to pin down any prog bands that I’m a big fan of… Weird huh?
Q8: あなたは FATES WARNING と共にプログメタルの巨人である DREAM THEATER とも共演していますが、彼らや現在の Prog-Metal シーンについてはどう思っていますか？
【RAY】: DREAM THEATER は偉大なバンドだけど、あまり聴いたことがないんだ。聴けば偉大なバンドだと思うんだけどね…Prog-Metal もあまり聴かないんどよ。実際、大ファンの Prog バンドを挙げるのも難しいくらいでね…奇妙だよね(笑)。

FIVE ALBUMS THAT CHANGED RAY’S LIFE!!
Well, I know that Judas Priest “Unleashed In The East” was one record that totally made me want to do this, at that moment I had never heard any other Priest stuff and that just blew me away..
Other than that I was really loving Journey when I was young, I’ve always loved the style of Steve Perry’s voice and his range…
Also I listened to a lot of funk and soul growing up, I loved the soul from the vocals of those singers. Bands like The Brothers Johnson and Al Green, even Earth, Wind and Fire…
【RAY】: JUDAS PRIEST の “Unleashed The East” によって僕は完全にメタルがやりたいと思ったんだ。当時僕は他の JUDAS の楽曲は聴いたことが無かったんだけど、ただただ圧倒されたよ…
他には JOURNEY も若い頃は大好きだったね。Steve Perry の声やレンジを愛してきたんだよ。
ファンクやソウルもよく聴いていたね。ボーカルのソウルが好きだったんだ。The Brothers Johnson, Al Green, EARTH, WIND AND FIRE だって聴いていたよ。
