First of all, thank you for being so enthousiactic about our band !
It is hard to explain our music to be honest. Futurologie is our latest EP after two full-lenght albums, an only 8bit/chiptune EP and an OST for a documentary about a tournament of the game Street Fighter II. The purpose of our music is always to create tracks without any boundaries, just composing things we like : metal, electronic, jazz, classical, world or movies/games-inflenced…

正直、僕たちの音楽を説明するのは難しいね。”FUTUROLOGIE” は僕たちの最新の EP なんだ。以前には2枚のフルアルバムと 8bit/chiptune オンリーの EP, STREET FIGHTER 2 トーナメントの OST をリリースしているよ。僕たちの目的は好きな音楽を限界なしで製作する事なんだ。METAL, ELECTRONIC, JAZZ, CLASSICAL, WORLD MUSIC, MOVIE/GAME なんかの影響を受けているよ。
Futurologie was composed to be a stand-alone long track, with a bonus full orchestral version. This EP is mostly influenced by movies, it is thought to be some kind of a visual song. Usually, we work with a computer for composition and arrangements and then we learn to play some of the tracks for live shows. We are considered like a metal band cause we have electric guitars and some blastbeats but i don’t think we have a true unique music style. We generally speak about « rococo-core » : it means a style with too many music tags, too many different arrangements, and of course too many notes. But we are not confortable with genres in general. We just play the music we like without thinking too much about a concept.
About Japan, we are extremely inflenced by Japanese culture, specially music and movies and obviously video games. We all use to listen to a lot of Koenji Hyakkei and Ruinsfor example. Also electronic artists like Ryoji Ikeda and Masami Akita, or even jazz bands like Soil and Pimp Sessions. I’m also a big fan of Japanese movies : directors like Shozin Fukui, Sion Sono, Katsuhito Ishii, Hitochi Matsumoto and Shinya Tsukamoto… All those directors work without compromises, in an extreme way. The movie « Funky forrest » is a perfect example of what i’m talking about : no boundaries, no limits, the explosion of codes from typical movie genres and also lot’s of poetry and humouristic things… For me, Japan is one the most creative country, and of course Japanese artists never stop to influence us. It was also the case for lot’s of 80’s/90’s videogame musics ( we even have a side project band of covers from various retrogames music ). Our babysitters were Megaman (known as « Rockman » in Japan) and Castlevania and the music from these games is fantastic. That explains the heavy use of chiptune sounds in Pryapisme.
We really hope we can travel to play in Japan one day. It’s a goal to reach for us since the beginning of the band. That and making music for a Japanese project ( film or game ). Maybe one day…

Guitarist Marcus Siepen adds: “We like to keep our options open to the very end. We do not record just two rhythm guitar tracks; we add several tracks, also with different tunings… we enrich the sound with down-tuned guitars. A wall of sound!”

The album’s spellbinding tracks showcase BLIND GUARDIAN’s long-awaited collaborative work with three different classical choirs from Prague, Budapest, and Boston, plus two grand orchestras – each featuring 90 musicians. An endeavour demanding that attention be paid to the lyrics as much as to the music, »Beyond The Red Mirror« is a desperate search for truth, an exploration of the relativities of good and evil, a testimony of the consequences of lost opportunities, a glimpse into a distant universe’s dystopian society, and a story about a prophecy, a promise of revolution, a plot for revenge, and a miracle machine with powers far beyond what mere mortals could have dreamed possible.

“APPETIZER” の日本リリースが1994年。という事は今年デビュー20周年となるスウェーデンの GUITAR GOD, MATTIAS “IA” EKLUNDH 率いる変態ハードロックトリオ FREAK KITCHEN。前作 “LAND OF THE FREAKS” から5年の月日を経て彼らの新作 “COOKING WITH PAGANS” がリリースされました。彼ら独特のキャッチーなメロディーと時に複雑怪奇な曲展開。ギターの切れ味も益々鋭さを増してきている感さえあります。サイトを始める際、この人にインタビュー出来たらいいな、と漠然とまず考えた MATTIAS “IA” EKLUNDH になんとロングインタビュー出来ました。多くは要らないでしょう。どうぞ。
【ABOUT “COOKING WITH PAGANS”】
Q1: Your new album ‘ Cooking with Pagans’ is about to launch in world wide!! ‘Land of the Freaks’ was released in 2009. So, It took 5 years. We waited for that for a long time. How are you feeling now? And why is it taking so SPUNKING long?
【IA】:I am feeling well and happy, thank you. Yes, it took a long time but hopefully it was worth the wait. In between the two most recent records, I recorded my Freak Guitar – The Smorgasbord album and the album Art Metal: The Jazz Raj with my friend Jonas Hellborg and Indian drummer Ranjit Barot. I also built my Apple Horn studio in the forest of Sweden, outside of my hometown of Gothenburg.
Q1: 新作 “COOKING WITH PAGANS” がリリースされましたね。前作 “LAND OF THE FREAKS” のリリースが2009年ですからリリースに5年間かかった事になります。その理由と今のお気持ちを聞かせて下さい。
【IA】: とても良い気分だし幸せだよ、ありがとう。うん、確かに長い時間かかってしまったけど待っただけの価値がある作品になったと思うよ。新作までの5年間は僕のソロ作 “FREAK GUITAR” の”THE SMORGASBORD” とART METAL の“THE JAZZ RAJ” (友達の JONAS HELLBORG とインド人ドラマー RANJIT BAROT とのプロジェクト）を製作していたんだ。あとは僕の地元ゴーセンバーグの外側にあるスウェーデンの森に APPLE HORN STUDIO って自分のスタジオを建てたんだ。
Q2: ‘Cooking with Pagan’ is nice title. And I love the artwork with that. Why did you choose this title? And is this album have any conceptual story?
【IA】: We had the privilege of being contacted by amazing Disney animator Juanjo Guarnido a while back. He was a rabid Freak Kitchen fan and was eager to draw the artwork. I had the idea from way back that the cows sort of took over, having them with our heads chopped off in front of a cannibal kettle and Juanjo really liked it and did the best possible artwork. There is no deep meaning or concept behind it, just a groovy cover. We are so grateful to have him onboard.
Q3: “Slop-py-py-py-py-py-py-py-py! Sloppy!” is FREAKY cool!! Black/White PV is also nice. Yeah, I think that’s exactly Freak Kitchen’s song. We can sing a long with chorus. And guitar phrase “EFF#G EFF#G A A# B” is very impressive. That kind of rhythmical phrase is trademark of Freak Kitchen. Anyway, you always think great deal of catchy feeling and sing a long chorus as much as musical difficulties. I love that. Why?
【IA】: I am a sucker for melodies combined with good music. You can sing really aggressive but still carry a tune. We also have influences from all over the world that we like to fuse with traditional song writing… and that together becomes Freak Kitchen sounding music (that I am glad you like).
Q4: I roar with laughter about the title’I don’t want to golf’ . Is there any rock song of that kind of title?? NOPE. And lyrics include the words ‘Hole in one’ or ‘Bunker’. haha. Your song title is sometime very strange like ‘Anal Bleach’ ‘Murder Groupie’ ‘Propaganda Pie’ …How did you come up with it?
【IA】:I want to put out music and lyrics I haven’t heard before. I also think you can write about virtually anything. Stuff I think about, while walking the Swedish woods with my two German shepherd dogs, usually manifest itself into our songs. Although a lot of tunes may come off as funny at first, when you read between the lines, they are actually quite harsh and upsetting. Humor is a good way to share difficult topics so they get bearable.
Q5: Did you sing in ‘Private Property’? I felt it was sing by singer like Doug Pinnick. Very low and nice voice.
【IA】:It is Chris, our bass player that is singing it. He is also the man behind songs like Razor Flowers, Infidelity Ghost and The Only Way. I will tell him you like his voice.
【IA】:CHRIS だよ。僕らのベーシストが歌っているよ。彼は他にも RAZOR FLOWERS, INFIDELITY GHOST, THE ONLY WAY で歌っているよ。君が気に入ったと彼に伝えておくよ。
Q6: ‘Come back to Comeback’ and Ranks of terrified’ is very challenging song, I think. It’s like guitar play to burst into flames. Are you satisfied with that?
【IA】:I do what I do and sometimes I, like in Ranks of the Terrified, use tapping as a riff. People tend to use tapping non percussive, like a waterfall, whereas I think you can do wonderfully, rhythmical things with it. So I do.
Q5: “Come back to Comeback” “Ranks of Terrified” はとてもチャレンジングな曲ですね。火の出るようなギタープレイがとても印象的です。
【IA】: 僕は僕らしくやっているだけさ。時々僕は、”RANKS OF TERRIFIED” でやっているように、リフにタッピングを使うんだ。タッピングを流れるようにパーカッシブな要素なしで行う人は多いけど、もっとリズミカルに素晴らしくやることだって出来ると思うんだ。僕もそうやっているよ。
【ABOUT FREAK KITCHEN】
Q1: Let’s talk about your works from the past. My favorite FREAK song is ‘Vaseline Bizinez’. That song has perfect balance between catchy feeling and musical difficulties. Anyway, What album and song are you most proud of?
【IA】: This is really hard to say. Naturally I am most happy with the new one, Cooking with Pagans. But a song like Teargas Jazz from the previous one is a highlight in our career as well. There are a whole bunch of tunes I like. Another favorite is We’ve Heard it All Before from the third album. I always like that.
Q1: 過去作の話をしましょう。どのアルバムと曲が最も誇らしいですか？
【IA】: とても難しいね。自然な事だけど今は新作 “COOKING WITH PAGANS” が一番気に入っているよ。ただ前作の “TEARGAS JAZZ” のような曲は自分のキャリアでも新作と同じくらいハイライトだね。好きな曲は山ほどあるよ。3枚目の“WE’VE HEARD IT ALL BEFORE” は大好きだね。常に好きだよ。
Q2: Freak Kitchen is always trio. Why are you particular about three piece?
【IA】: It gives you a lot of freedom and you have to get yourself together. There is nothing to hide behind, you have to play well or it will totally collapse. I adore the trio format.
Q1: I think you are one of the first person using polyrhythm riffs in Metal. That kind of approach becomes popular now a days. Anyway, do you hear Meshuggah or Djent? And what do you think about them?
【IA】:Fredrik of Meshuggah is a close friend and broke so much ground with what he is doing. I think though that most of the so called Djent stuff is a lame ripoff of Meshuggah who are in a totally different league.
Q2: Would you talk about your gears? What do you like your main guitar Caparison Apple Horn 8? And please tell me other guitars and amps. I love your magical tone and harmonics. I can’t believe you don’t need lots of effects…
【IA】:I think the use of effects take you away from your true sound, who you really are (unless you built the effects yourself, that is). There is so much hiding in the guitar itself you don’t need a lush pedal board in between you, the instrument and the amp, in my opinion. The Apple Horn 8 is a marvelous guitar, the best one I have ever played and I will bring it to Japan shortly so you can hear and see for yourself.
Q2: 機材について教えて下さい。愛器 CAPARISON APPLE HORN 8 のどの辺りが気に入っていますか？あなたがあまりエフェクトを使用せずあのトーンやハーモニクスを生み出しているのが信じられません。
【IA】:エフェクトを多用する事は君の本当のサウンド、本当の君らしさから君を遠ざけてしまうと思う（自分でエフェクトを構築してないなら尚更ね）。ギター自体の良さを消してしまうから君と楽器とアンプの間に豪華なペダルボードは必要ないと思うよ。あくまで僕の考えだけどね。THE APPLE HORN 8 は素晴らしいギターだよ。今まで弾いた中でも最高のものだね。日本にも少しの間だけど持って行くから自分の目と耳で確かめて欲しいな。
Q3:You sometimes use hose clip, a remote control, dildo, and other toys or everyday necessities. Haw,Haw,How did you come up with it?And did you use new toys in this album?
【IA】: Not so many toys on Cooking with Pagans but all the more on Freak Guitar – The Smorgasbord that was released last year; combs (Musth), balloons (Trumpet Lesson) and more.
Q4: You are take part in the documentary film ‘ Axemen of Sweden’ along with John Norum, Kee Marcello, and others. Why does Sweden create lots of talented guitarists? And is there any young guitarist you like in the world?
【IA】:There are tons of tremendously gifted guitarist out there, no doubt. I still go back to my old Django Reinhardt records though to hear true attitude, something I do lack in today’s shredders. But I am sure there is someone out there who will turn the guitar world upside down. I really hope so for the future of guitar, an instrument so groovy and potent. I am not sure why so many good guitarists come from Sweden. We’ve got nothing to do here, in the cold wintertime, than to stay inside and practice I guess, haha.
Q4: JOHN NORUM, KEE MARCELLO, などと共にドキュメンタリー映画 “AXEMAN OF SWEDEN” に参加していましたね。なぜスウェーデンから多くの才能に溢れるギタリストが輩出されるのでしょう？また若手で気に入っているギタリストはいますか？
Q5:I love your solo projects. But why do you create solo records? Is that your challenge for guitar and music?
【IA】: My solo records are important to me as it gives me a window to explore and come up with new music, music I have yet to hear out there. It is a true blessing to have someone like Steve Vai supporting you in this mission, to break new ground and discover various ways to approach the guitar. Thank God, Steve finds what I do important and I have total freedom to do what I want to do. I love going into my studio and create something out of total nothing.
Q5: ソロプロジェクトも素晴らしいですがなぜFKとは別にやる必要があるのでしょう。
【IA】: 僕のソロ作品は重要な意味を持っているんだ。新しい音楽を探索したり発見したりする為の窓的なものと言えるかもしれないね。STEVE VAI のような人が、ギターの新境地を色々なアプローチで開拓するというこのミッションをサポートしてくれるなんて本当に天恵としか思えないよ。神様ありがとう。スティーブは僕のやる事を重要だと認めてくれるし僕のやりたい事を完全に自由にやらせてくれる。僕はただスタジオに入って何もないところから製作するのが好きなんだ。
