US,ダラス出身のインストゥルメンタル・シャイニングスター POLYPHIA が3/11に新作 “RENAISSANCE” をリリースします！！ ANIMALS AS LEADERS を頂点とし、活況を呈する INSTRU-METAL シーンにとって重要な一枚となることは間違いないでしょう。ドラマーの Brandon 二度目の脱退によりバンドは現在ギター二本とベースのトリオ編成となっています。
さて、彼らがシーンにとって重要な存在である理由。それはまずその端正な顔面とシュッとした容姿にあります。若いおねいさんがライブ会場やSNSに増えますね。そして彼らの音楽も容姿同様甘くてエモーショナル。難解と思われがちなシーンの入り口として期待されます。
今作は EDM、Hip Hop, クラシカルなどモダンな音楽を意欲的に取り入れた野心作。まさに INSTRU-METAL RENAISSANCE を起こすような作品となるでしょう。以前からポップミュージックへの拘りを口にしていた POLYPHIA ですが、 Justin Bieber, Drake, ZEDD, Kendrick Lamar といった最先端のポップミュージックからの影響を前面に出して勝負するようです。AAL, CHON, そして POLYPHIA。三者三様のアイデンティティーでシーンを盛り上げていってもらいたいと思います。
Renaissance was recorded with Nick Sampson (Asking Alexandria, Of Mice & Men) who co-produced the album with Polyphia guitarists Tim Henson and Scott LePage. Renaissance introduces a new conceptual and artistic direction for the trio’s sound, vibe and visual aesthetic, that sees the band embracing their eclectic musical tastes (which include EDM, hip hop, pop and classical music) to create their own innovative blend of technical, yet melodic instrumental arrangements.
“Runessaece” は Nick Sampson (Asking Alexandria, Of Mice & Men) を POLYPHIA の Tim, Scott と共に Co-Producer に起用して制作されました。”Runessaece” のサウンド、美しいビジュアルは、トリオとなった新しい POLYPHIA のコンセプトや芸術性を表しています。EDM, Hip Hop, Pop, そしてクラッシックといったエクレクティックな要素を取り入れ、テクニカルでありながらメロディアスなインストゥルメンタルアレンジとブレンドすることで、彼ら独自の革新的な音楽を創造したのです。

【POLYPHIA TALKS ABOUT “RENAISSANCE”】
“Our new track “Nightmare” is the first 8-string piece we’ve written,The video tells the story of a ballerina practicing for perfection. Her deranged instructor appears only to make her do it over and over again. She keeps practicing the routine until her feet bleed, and she throws up blood. At the end, she thinks she finally got it perfect, but her instructor has had enough and decides to strangle her out of nowhere. As soon as he makes contact with her, she wakes up to realize that she was only having a nightmare.”
新曲”Nightmare”は僕たちが初めて8弦ギターを使用して書いた楽曲なんだ。このMVはバレリーナが完璧を求めて練習を重ねるストーリーだよ。彼女の狂ったインストラクターは何度も何度も同じ練習をさせるんだ。彼女は足が傷つき血を流すまでルーティンを続けたよ。結局、彼女は遂に完璧になったと思うんだけど、インストラクターは飽きてしまって彼女を突然絞め殺すことに決める。インストラクターが彼女の首に手をかけた時、彼女は目覚めただの悪夢だったと悟るんだけどね。
“As a band, we’ve been pretty clear and up front about our love affair with culturally mainstream music. Arranging the actual sound of the record was somewhat tricky, seeing as how the Justin Bieber and Drake records we’ve been blasting nonstop don’t exactly fit right in with the thematic elements of Renaissance culture. At the end of the day it was actually quite a blast to see what sort of “hybrid” music we could birth between various genres in a tasteful way. It feels really good to know that the internet won’t be able to label this album with a sub-genre quite as easily as it might expect.”
バンドとして、僕たちが現代的なメインストリームミュージックを愛していることは、率直に言ってとても明白だよね。今回のレコードのサウンドを実際にアレンジするのはいくらかトリッキーだったんだ。ノンストップでバカ騒ぎするような Justin Bieber や Drake のレコードがルネッサンス文化に全くフィットしないのは分かるだろう？
結局のところ、実際、様々なジャンルの間から、僕たちがどうやってハイブリッドされた音楽を生み出すことができるかこそが重要なんだ。ネットの人たちだって、このアルバムをサブジャンルで定義することは思っているより簡単じゃないよ。そういう作品を作れたことが本当に嬉しいんだ。
“We want people to recognize the new creative direction we’re going with our music: an almost electronic type of genre merged with instrumental songwriting. One thing we like to experiment with is jamming on hip hop tracks just to see where it takes us, and doing that has helped us come up with some fresh new ideas for song structure, melody, and other things that we haven’t really ever experimented with before. We find that this is a really good way of opening our ears to new realms of music writing. Coming up with catchy, memorable hooks is something we’ve been working hard to implement in our music. It feels good to be giving our fans and friends a new album that’s so emotionally charged and intellectually stimulating. It’s going to make people think things they’ve never thought, feel things they’ve never felt, and hopefully see that Polyphia is expanding in a way that we’re extremely passionate about.”
みんなには僕たちが進んでいる新しいクリエイティブな方向性を理解して欲しい。ほとんどのエレクトロニカのジャンルがインストのソングライティングに融合しているんだよ。hip hop のトラックでジャムってどうなるか試すのが好きだし、そうすることで楽曲の構成、メロディー、そして他にも以前は出てこなかったようなフレッシュな新しいアイデアが湧き出てくるんだ。それが新しいソングライティングの領域に達する為の良い方法だと気づいたんだよ。
