I really wanted to get it out quickly, because we were so happy with it, and I also wanted to have it in the air during the live-action debut of my opera Origin of the Alimonies, which took place this month. I think it&#8217;s kind of interesting to produce content for very different types of cultural platforms simultaneously, which has a way of forcing different audiences to encounter one another, if that makes sense. The only reason it was a &#8216;surprise&#8217; was that my manager was fighting really hard against us releasing it this year, and had momentarily convinced me not to, but then I kind of freaked out and fired him and did it anyway &#8211; if we&#8217;d stuck with the original plan we would have released Pasaqalia as a second single and announced it a few weeks in advance. We released it without a label or any real support from traditional music media, which was perhaps unwise, but I think the world is really changing and it&#8217;s not clear that like giving The Wire three months to schedule an article or whatever moves the needle very much. What kind of record will it be? <\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u3010HUNTER\u3011: <\/span><\/strong><\/span><em>The compositional style is close to Liturgy, its full of the burst beat and general tremolo and so on, but the overall shape of it is a lot closer to classical music. Lots of silence, rarely a steady meter, huge crescendos that are synced to speech patterns, microtonal improvisation and so on. I worked way, way, harder composing the music to Origin than the music for H.A.Q.Q., and I&#8217;m sure the audience will be much, much smaller, because it is a lot less accessible. A big portion of it is an arrangement and interpretation of an organ piece by Olivier Messiaen. I&#8217;m not sure if we&#8217;ll actually release the music as soon as we said we would, because there&#8217;s a film that goes with it and I&#8221;m not sure the film is quite ready. The opera tells the story of why the world was born, and its story is meant to be the aesthetic core to the philosophical system that I&#8217;ve been developing along with Liturgy. I&#8217;ve always wanted this project to have the character of total art, and this year we&#8217;re finally starting to deliver on that a little more concretely. There&#8217;s a system of archetypal characters and a theory of history embedded in the opera and in Liturgy albums. Basically the story of the opera is about two divine principles OIOION and SHEYMN that are torn apart by their own traumatizing love for one another, so form and matter appear as barriers to protect them from each other while also providing limited access, more and more over time as the divine principles are more able to handle one another. It&#8217;s meant to be a philosophical system that has the scope and range of those of Hegel or Deleuze. Obviously I don&#8217;t claim to be a great thinker to the degree either of them are, but I am covering all the same topics as any original philosopher, and have a considered opinion on most of them at this point, as well as a way of tying them together. I&#8217;ve been developing the system on my <a href=\"http:\/\/arkwork.org\/liturgy\">arkwork.org<\/a>\u00a0website for a few years now. It traces a path of liberation from the consideration of the problem of good and evil (axiology) through a philosophical consideration of the nature of being and time, to a rational vision of the kingdom of heaven (eschatology). What&#8217;s your perspective about the musical direction of &#8220;H.A.Q.Q.&#8221;?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u3010HUNTER\u3011: <\/span><\/strong><\/span><em>I agree that The Ark Work was a flawed record, even though it&#8217;s possibly my favorite, since it&#8217;s also so radical, and it was the one we worked the hardest on by far. I was also learning and developing brand new tools for composition as we were going, like I barely knew how to do digital production really. H.A.Q.Q. in my view doesn&#8217;t really add anything new to the Liturgy language, but it&#8217;s the best and most high-quality rendering of the Liturgy sound that we&#8217;ve produced. I just wanted to make it good. Good compositions, good performances, good recording, without being desperate to do something particularly new. It feels great to have built up this set of tools and skills and to just use them and enjoy that. How did you find Japanese &#8220;Gagaku&#8221; and take hichiriki &amp; ryuteki in your music?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u3010HUNTER\u3011: <\/span><\/strong><\/span><em> Yeah, I love gagaku. Not an expert at all, but a few years back I was introduced to the style and have listened to lots of recordings and performances. Its whole musical logic is so different from most of my influences in metal and classical, but it feels really resonant too because it touches on infinity and eternity in this way that is so emotional and yet so formal, so jarring and yet so calm, which is how people describe Liturgy too, though the materials are totally opposed. I though it would be interesting to try to combine the two, and it was quite difficult. What&#8217;s the reason of that?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u3010HUNTER\u3011: <\/span><\/strong><\/span><em> It would probably be a wiser branding choice to get rid of the black metal label, but I find it hard to. Partly it&#8217;s because the basic form almost always has the characteristic tremolo guitars, blast beats and high pitched screams as the end of the day. Another is that I find the place of black metal in the history of music to be really interesting and important, because it&#8217;s so contradictory &#8211; so connected to metal, punk, classical music, liturgical music, violence, spirituality, anti-modernism, philosophy. Could you tell us about the relationship between these three?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u3010HUNTER\u3011: <\/span><\/strong><\/span><em>My theory is that music, drama and philosophy are elemental features of reality; they&#8217;re more real than the physical universe even, and we don&#8217;t yet know what either of them really is. I&#8217;m interested in the idea that they can and should be put into a productive relationship, or that doing this could be the generative principle of a new era for civilization. Specifically the idea is that as civilization&#8217;s productive force has expanded over the course of history, there have been three ternaries that have successively governed its superstructure, each more abstract than the last. The first was the Great Triad of nature mysticism which is described well by Rene Guenon. The second was the holy trinity of Abrahamic faiths, which began to tear civilization away from nature, pointing towards the scientific revolution. The currently reigning one is the capitalist trinity of industry, science and culture, which is liquidating culture and nature both. We can imagine a future trinity that would solve the problems capital is creating which taking advantage of the forces it is liberating, and this would have as its members music, drama and philosophy, liberated from the aesthetic sphere so as to become organizing principles of society itself. This would be the city Haelegen. All wildly speculative of course, but I think these things are worth thinking about. It&#8217;s also worth remembering that no one has a proven theory of history, no one knows why the arts exist. Most people agree there is a primal distinction between will, imagination and understanding, but no one knows why. I think these three can be mapped onto music, art and philosophy, and that the development of these disciplines can be made to trace an historical destiny. <\/em><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">Q8:
