So, at first, could you tell us about the band and yourself? What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u3010PHIL\u3011: <\/span><\/strong><\/span><em>Thank you for this amazing opportunity. My name is Phil Tougas (also known as \u201cHyperborean Apparition\u201d or \u201cChrom\u201d in certain circles or Pat if you live in Longueuil). I was born on October 11th 1991 in Montreal &#8211; Quebec, which is the french speaking province of Canada. My father (and my two uncles) were the founders of DDT, the very first Quebec heavy metal band to emerge from this province in the late 70s. He is now a very well-known sound engineer in the Quebec mainstream music industry. My mother\u2019s main field in natural medicine is different from my father\u2019s but she is a 70s prog rock fan and a connoisseur. Half of her family were known jazz musicians while the other half were classical music composers. One of them even invented a new music notation system and language. It is safe to say I was destined to become a musician because of my heritage, but it took a long time for me to develop this passion and reach my potential.<br \/>\nI started playing guitar at age 10. After discovering rock &amp; metal music a few years later, I did my first two tours at ages 14 and 15 respectively and with various cover bands. We would cover songs from Iron Maiden, Rush, etc. At age 15, I wrote and recorded my first heavy\/power metal songs which sounded like Painkiller\/Ram It Down-era Judas Priest with a lot of solos, but sadly I could not find anyone else to play these songs with. I only listened to 80s and 90s heavy metal, thrash metal, power metal and any shred-adjacent music I could sink my teeth into during that period of my life. Playing or listening to death metal was out of the question because I was an edgy contrarian kid at the time.<br \/>\nKeep in mind this was in 2007. The Montreal area in the province of Quebec was dominated by death metal, black metal and deathcore. It still is, but it was even more prevalent in that period. It was a frustrating time for a person like me. If you drove 3 hours up to the province\u2019s capital &#8211; Quebec City, you would find more power metal, thrash, heavy metal bands but I had no connections there yet. I did eventually open my mind to extreme metal at age 15 thanks to Morbid Angel, but with this newfound sense of appreciation for extreme music came the realization that I would not find old school heavy\/power metal\/shred-oriented musicians of my age. All my friends were into everything else BUT that. Seeing Martyr, Augury &amp; Quo Vadis in concert around 2007 also made me realize I needed to make a compromise somehow : what if I did both?<br \/>\nThis brings us to First Fragment. I met Gabriel Brault-Pilon (the band&#8217;s rhythm guitar player from 2007-2016) through my mother. At the time, he was the guitarist of the band Senseless Shell and at the time he was looking for a lead guitarist for a new &#8220;side project&#8221; (which would later become First Fragment). He sent me not one or two<br \/>\nbut 20 of his compositions and introduced me to technical death metal. He then asked me if I could learn one or two of his songs. I learned four of them but I could not play the songs in the way he originally wrote them at first because I had NEVER HEARD or seen this kind of riffing before. Even the Yngwie Malmsteen, Racer X and Michael Angelo Batio songs I learned did not prepare me for this. It was technical death metal riffing with a slight neoclassical influence. I needed and wanted these songs to sound more neoclassical though so while jamming the songs, I readapted some riffs and added more solos. He was impressed to say the least, while I was impressed he could write music like this. Despite the 8 years age difference between us (I was 15 and he was 23) we got along very well. On that day we rehearsed for 8 hours over the drums he had programmed. It was surreal to see myself, a 15 year old kid COVERED in leather and studs, playing this music with an older man with cargo shorts, short hair and death metal shirts. We made it work.<br \/>\nFirst Fragment was later chosen as a name in September 2007. Gabriel&#8217;s brother David AB would join us on vocals after he heard us play together and he became the third founding member and a staple in the band\u2019s sound. We recorded 7 songs in the summer of 2008 and released them as two demos in fall 2008 &amp; winter 2009. Half of them sounded quite different from the other half so we scrapped these songs forever. Afterwards, Gabriel and David\u2019s other band Senseless Shell fused with First Fragment after I replaced their lead guitarist and recorded and released the song \u201cPsychan\u201d on my own. This added a larger number of songs in our already huge song bank. This made us sound more extreme and it inspired me to start writing for the band. The result was the song &#8220;Paradoxal Subjugation&#8221; which was recorded in 2009 alongside 3 demo rerecordings and two other newer songs. These 6 songs would be featured on The Afterthought Ecstasy EP which was released in late 2010 &#8211; more than a year after we had recorded it because of financial issues. The year 2010 was a huge turning point for the band other than this notorious release. Firstly, we finally found a drummer that year, Phil Boucher of Beyond Creation \/ Chthe&#8217;ilist etc. This happened after the EP was completed with a drum machine but still, it was such a relief for us. It meant we now had the chance to finally play live after having spent the last 3 years looking for a drummer whilst being doomed to play to a drum machine. We also found a bass player that year as well &#8211; my childhood friend Vincent Savary.<br \/>\nFinally, late 2009 &amp; early\/mid 2010 was the year I also wrote all my compositions for First Fragment&#8217;s first LP titled Dasein which would only come out in 2016. These songs would be Gula, Le Serment De Tsion, L\u2019entite\u0301, Pre\u0301lude en Sol Die\u0300se Mineur &amp; Evhron. The Afterthought Ecstasy wasn\u2019t even out by then! I was just 17-18 years old, which is crazy when I think about it. We already had flamenco and neoclassical elements on the demos and The Afterthought Ecstasy but this marked a turning point in the band\u2019s evolution towards its true musical identity. On another hand, by 2009 and 2010 I was then fully converted to underground and older extreme metal thanks to hours of research and befriending a ton of social outcasts on various websites. This also led to the creation of my first true proper death metal band Chthe&#8217;ilist and the creation of my doom metal band Atramentus, but that is a story for another time.<br \/>\nAfter a series of shows through 2011-2012 sandwiched in between shows I did with other bands, First Fragment recorded Dasein in 2013. It took longer to finish the album because our ex drummer Phil Boucher left the band right before recording his parts. He was replaced by a session drummer from the USA named Troy Fullerton of Severed Savior. After many delays, the album was FINALLY released in May 2016 through Unique Leader Records and its reception was MASSIVE. Shortly after our first mini-tour to promote the album that same year (and just before a 2nd Canadian run with Kronos), co-founder Gabriel left the band to focus on his career and original bassist Vincent Savary left to focus on other musical projects. Nick Miller (Ex Killitorous), Nicholas Wells (Ex Pronostic) &amp; Dominic &#8220;Forest&#8221; Lapointe joined the band and this brought First Fragment to the next level. While I was writing the follow-up to Dasein titled &#8220;Gloire E\u0301ternelle&#8221;, First Fragment &amp; its newest line-up embarked on a Canadian tour with Archspire and on an European tour with Obscura in 2018 &amp; 2019 respectively. The response was amazing! Finally, we decided to record Gloire E\u0301ternelle in early 2020 after I had enough new material. Following several months of pain, suffering and sleepless nights, the album was unleashed on October 29th 2021. In my opinion, it is an album that has surpassed both TAE &amp; Dasein combined and it is as unique as it is wild and eclectic. The band has come a long way since its crude demo days. With this album, we created a new subgenre &#8211; the fusion of neoclassical power metal, extreme technical death metal, flamenco &amp; swing all into one cohesive package. These last 14 years of hard work have paid off! Vincent, Phil B &amp; Gabriel are still close friends of the band and we even had Vincent play a guest bass solo on In\u2019El.<br \/>\n&#8220;Why are there so few First Fragment releases between 2007-2021?&#8221; you may ask. The explanation is simple : Since the creation of First Fragment, I have been involved with over twenty other bands playing a multitude of subgenres, have toured in over 22 countries and appeared on nearly 50 releases. First Fragment represents only a piece in this complex puzzle that is my musical journey. What made you start playing the guitar? Thank you! I discovered punk music in the 90s as a child and it made me pick up the guitar at age 10 as I said. I was very much into bands like The Exploited, Raised Fist &amp; The Casualties as well as underground ska\/punk bands from Quebec like Couch Addiction &amp; 2Stoned2Skank.<br \/>\nI was a bad guitarist for a long time though. I did not have much raw talent but my guitar teacher taught me the basics well so I could eventually flesh out my own identity in later years. This happened at age 13-14 when I discovered proper heavy metal. Seeing the Judas Priest live Vengeance &#8217;82 dvd and THEN going to one of their shows on my birthday made me who I am today. I am not gifted. I am not a child prodigy. I did not study music early on. Being exposed to the right bands by great parents, being tutored by an open minded and patient teacher and having an unrelenting drive and obsession with guitar is what shaped me. Tipton\/Downing were my first true guitar heroes alongside Adrian Smith &amp; Dave Murray of Iron Maiden.<br \/>\nThen, everything changed for me after seeing Yngwie Malmsteen playing Far Beyond The Sun for the first time. I didn&#8217;t know a guitar could sound like this before I heard him. His wide vibrato technique, the whammy bar techniques he used and the picking techniques he used impressed me so much. I also had a similar reaction when hearing Michael Romeo from Symphony X for the first time. From there on, I would also discover Paul Gilbert &amp; Bruce Bouillet through Racer X, Jason Becker &amp; Marty Friedman through Cacophony and all of them played a crucial role in the development of my style. Other than Morbid Angel, the discovery of Necrophagist, Pavor and Cryptopsy at age 15 was also a big deal because this is when I realized I could mix neoclassical guitar playing with extreme metal. Rainer, Jon &amp; Muhammed were all huge inspirations to me early on as well.<br \/>\nHowever, I would say my style dramatically changed and evolved for the better once I discovered Tony MacAlpine&#8217;s first two solo albums. The same thing happened when I discovered Joey Tafolla&#8217;s solo albums as well as his work with Jag Panzer and Henk Van Der Laars&#8217;s work with Elegy later on. I was never the same in all three instances. I think these three guitarists are my biggest heroes to this day because listening to them helped me develop my own style the most. I later used what I learned from all these guitarists (plus the ones I mentioned above) to make Gloire E\u0301ternelle the way it is. It is why each riff and each solo on our new album seem more lively this time around. They all have their quirks and are played using a wide array of techniques outside of the usual tremolo picking\/tapping\/sweeping stuff found in this genre. I want to quote this other interview I made if you don\u2019t mind : \u201cTechniques such as Jason Becker-style slide-ins, Joey Tafolla-style upward slide outs, Marty Friedman-style half-bends, whammy bar accents inspired by Tony MacAlpine and Elegy\u2019s Henk Van Der Laars, slided pinch harmonics, etc are very prevalent on this record\u201d<br \/>\nI\u2019m not re-inventing the wheel here. I think I can do even better than what I did on this record too. But I had to make sure each of these techniques were used in a context that helped make each riff shine in a unique, eccentric way.<br \/>\nWhen it comes to writing actual death metal with my other bands such as Chthe&#8217;ilist, Funebrarum or Voidceremony (First Fragment is not death metal anymore, so it doesn&#8217;t count), I have had many other heroes that inspired me. Urban Skytt from Crematory (the Swedish crematory, not the German one), Antti Boman from Demilich (who even invited me on stage in Finland to play with a song with them) &amp; Dan Corchado from The Chasm come to mind. Shaune Kelley from Ripping Corpse is the biggest one for me still to this day. He&#8217;s the reason why I use pinch harmonics in the way that I do.<br \/>\nThere are numerous vocalists from which I draw influence from when it comes to my vocals in Atramentus and Chthe&#8217;ilist (and occasional back vocals in First Fragment). I developed a love for extreme doom bands like Skepticism, Thergothon, Evoken &amp; Worship early on in my life mainly due to how deep the vocals were. For my alien style vocals, I inspire myself from actual animals (ie Crocodiles, howling monkeys, bullfrogs). Numerous power metal vocalists have also had a direct influence on my guitar phrasing and my guitar vibrato style for all my bands but especially First Fragment. Midnight from Crimson Glory, Geoff Tate from Queensryche, Tom Mallicoat from Lethal, Agyl from Scald &amp; Zouille from Sortile\u0300ge all come to mind. I love to make my guitar solos scream much like how you hear Geoff Tate reach the high notes in songs like Take Hold Of The Flame or when John Arch does his multiple harmonies during the album closer of Fate\u2019s Warning The Spectre Within. And yes, our riffs are much like triple-counterpoint motifs when the bass is not playing lines close to the root notes I assigned him at first. This may be a surprise to you but I write all the riffs and arrangements including the basslines and the members later rewrite their parts from there which is what Forest did. I can\u2019t take all the credit though, he\u2019s responsible for the magic heard here and his own style shines through every single second of this record. I merely just fed him ideas! The solo sections themselves are what I call the \u201ctriple lead attack\u201d instead of the usual twin guitar attack although we often have dual leads and guitar harmonies inspired by Cacophony &amp; Elegy. We are definitely one of the rare metal bands out there willing to have bass that also acts as a guitar and a bass that plays as many solos as both guitarists with a total of 30 bass solos on this album. Quebec has the best bands when it comes to that style alongside Florida, Sweden &amp; Germany. With that said, we are the first and only technical metal band in the world that sings entirely in french, to my knowledge. Some bands from Quebec &amp; France have written individual songs in french but none have done two entire albums in a row like us. Some traditional death metal bands like De\u0301mence did that before us, and so did the band Anonymus, but neither are &#8220;technical metal&#8221;. Japanese power metal bands like Saber Tiger, Galneryus, Versailles, etc sing in their own language and it fits their music much like Quebec French fits our own music best. I think both of the new records are fantastic, but how do you feel about this difference?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u3010PHIL\u3011: <\/span><\/strong><\/span><em>I agree with you on all fronts. We are so different that to me the comparison strikes me as odd. Archspire&#8217;s music is precise, mathematical, cold, brutal, unrelenting, inhumanly fast, angry and extremely well calculated. First Fragment&#8217;s music is eclectic, organic, sometimes precise but sometimes improvised, exuberant, sometimes joyful and poignant, sometimes tragic and melancholic.<br \/>\nOur solos come from a different school of thought too. Dean&#8217;s solos are extremely complex yet well structured and often replicable. Mine are improvised, spontaneous, floating. We also have much more counterpoint in the riffs themselves while Archspire doesn&#8217;t mess around and goes for your throat.<br \/>\nOur production styles are quite different too. The production and mix on GE is less brutal, less powerful and less clean than BtF, but warmer and more &#8220;human&#8221;.<br \/>\nOur grooves also speak for themselves. Archspire covers the entire spectrum of modern extreme metal in that regard with the utilization of chugged chromatic riffs &amp; slam-adjacent grooves as well as deathcore-meets-decapitated style breakdowns with open string riffage. Our grooves are nowhere near as brutal or crushing. Instead, they are like a dance. Much like how you dance to swing or funk or flamenco where our inspiration stems from. It also stems from my love of Joey Tafolla\u2019s second album Infrablue and guitarists like Michael Lee Firkins &amp; Greg Howe.<br \/>\nAnd finally, I also do not consider First Fragment to be death metal, while Archspire are. The only thing we have in common is blast beats &amp; growls. Underneath, we are extremely different. All our riffs are constructed on neoclassical power metal chord progressions. Death Metal is crushing, heavy, evil, brutal. First Fragment is high intensity music but possesses none of these characteristics nor do I care to. Therefore, NOT death metal. I call First Fragment extreme neoclassical metal, and Archspire is Technical Death Metal. They do have neoclassical elements, but they are executed with modern techniques and sounds while we have stayed closer to the Shrapnel Records roots both in composition and sound.<br \/>\nI think only two factors explain the comparisons : We are from Canada and we had the same release date. That was neither our call nor Archspire&#8217;s. Anyway it doesn&#8217;t matter because they&#8217;re great friends of ours. We toured with them in the past and we will again. We sound absolutely nothing alike but our styles mesh so well on a tour package. We should do Canadian tours together every year! The story will be fully explained in an upcoming book that David is currently writing but I will do my best to explain it here. This demigod lives in forced seclusion and solitude on a mysterious planet as an eternal captive to another demigod named Tsion\u2019Il. The planet itself oddly resembles a past version of planet earth and Canevas is obsessed with the idea of escaping this prison-world through a portal in the sky as seen on the album cover. To reach his goal and fulfill his perpetual quest for self-transcendence and liberation, he must grow out of his orb-shell and undergo several stages of anthropomorphic metamorphosis to be able to brave the elements. First, he must go through an empty city and reach the ocean and plunge into its multicolored waters. He does so after morphing into a hybrid between an aquatic animal and a humanoid-like being. Once he reaches the island, he enters another metamorphosis cycle yet again, turning into a beast-like creature with the physiology and appearance of a bear or a wolf. This gives him the ability to climb and brave a perilous and colossal mountain on this island. After reaching its snowy summit, he eventually reverts back to a humanoid shape, this time however he grows wings in order to fly into the portal above the mountain and ultimately escape this prison-planet. But as he attempts to do so, he perishes mid-flight. It is worth mentioning that Canevas is actually immortal. Every time he dies, he is reborn inside the same orb he once resided in so he may attempt to make his escape once again thus perpetuating this endless obsession to escape the prison planet. And with every death, he sinks further into the depths of despair. Such is his fate : A never ending cycle of death and rebirth. A whimsical quest in an attempt to attain glory and transcendence &#8211; hence the title \u201cGloire E\u0301ternelle\u201d which translates to \u201cEternal Glory\u201d in english. Note that all of the lyrics on this record are poems. Each line is written in a cryptic way on purpose as they serve as metaphors for what is actually going on in the story.<br \/>\nThere is more to the story since the lore behind the band is quite extensive and spans through the course of 3 releases with the involvement of many recurring characters. This story also works as a prequel to the concept behind our debut album Dasein. What I just typed is but a glimpse of the multi-layered story taking place throughout the record. The album starts just like it ends, and loops endlessly much like how Canevas dies and is reborn again, doomed to repeat the same cycle over and over. The song Gloire E\u0301ternelle represents the beginning of the story. In\u2019el is the last chapter of the story and Mort E\u0301phe\u0301me\u0300re is the cycle beginning anew. I feel our music has a lot more in common than you would think with the bands there. I personally think the Japanese public has a great sense of appreciation and taste for the type of music that we play and so I am hoping people there will appreciate this record. I also hope the musicians from that scene that we have the utmost respect for will also appreciate Gloire E\u0301ternelle and be inspired by it the same way we are inspired by them. We hope to play in Japan soon so we can meet all of our fans there.<br \/>\nAnd finally, to all Japanese metal fans that appreciated my work in Eternity&#8217;s End&#8217;s 2nd album Unyielding which was released in Japan in 2018 : Be on the lookout for Dicymerian&#8217;s debut album.
