The earliest types of music I enjoyed were video game soundtracks, hip hop, and disco. I distinctly remember carrying around my Gameboy Color loaded up with Donkey Kong Country, having headphones inserted, and pressing pause on the game so the soundtrack would keep playing without me having to play the game. I\u2019d pretend I was listening to a hip hop album and would have imaginary rappers doing verses over the game\u2019s music. It was really fun (laughs).<br \/>\nRap\/Hip Hop was mainly what I grew up listening to because it\u2019s what my oldest sister listened to, and she was like a goddess to me when I was little. In all sincerity though, I did love the music. I still regularly visit my favorite hip hop albums from childhood. As for disco, my Mom got me really into it by showing me albums from Earth Wind and Fire, The Bee Gees, and Michael Jackson. Who was your musical hero at that time? <\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u3010ALEX\u3011: <\/span><\/strong><\/span><em>I began with bass guitar at age 11. Geddy Lee from Rush is probably the biggest reason I wanted to learn bass over guitar at the time. That and I thought the bass was just downright cooler since not as many people played it. I loved (and still do love) the bass, but I knew I needed to officially pick up the guitar when I found myself muting my bass\u2019s volume and pretending to play along to Slash\u2019s solos while jamming to Guns N Roses. So that\u2019s when I started to play the guitar as well. My musical hero at the time was Dave Mustaine from Megadeth. Why did you choose the name Dessiderium for the project?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u3010ALEX\u3011: <\/span><\/strong><\/span><em>When I started writing music, I didn\u2019t know of a single metal musician in town or how I could go about finding any. Because of that, I was basically forced to start a solo project. With that said I quickly fell in love with working on music alone. So much so that when I joined my first few bands I was pretty turned off by the idea of collaborating when writing. I was too stubborn and not used to having critiques of what I wrote, and was also too uncomfortable with giving feedback to others. Over time though I\u2019ve worked with bands that have shown me that collaborations can work beautifully with the right combination of people. I feel that way currently with Arkaik, for example. Anyways, at this point Dessiderium will always be around and will always be something I write for. Usually I play video games for fun, but I play JRPGs for the story, atmosphere, art, character relationships, and of course the music. They\u2019re just so much more than \u201cvideo games.\u201d They\u2019re like a vacation to another world, and if I\u2019m immersed in something that deeply then it\u2019s bound to affect the music I write. The same could be said for anime. I especially love psychological anime, and some of those shows have left permanent impressions in my mind that have also surely inspired me.<br \/>\nAs for specific JRPGS, I\u2019d say that Xenogears, Final Fantasy 7 and 8, Chrono Trigger, and Dragon Quest 11 have all influenced my music in one way or another. For anime, it\u2019d be shows like Tatami Galaxy, Welcome to the N.H.K., Elfen Lied, or Neon Genesis Evangelion. I\u2019ve also been deeply inspired by Hayao Miyazaki movies. Koji Kondo, Nobuo Uematsu, Yasunori Mitsuda, Masato Nakamura, Shoji Meguro, all of these composers have influenced me a great deal through the soundtracks from The Legend of Zelda, Mario, Final Fantasy, Xenogears\/Xenosaga, Chrono Trigger\/Chrono Cross, Sonic The Hedgehog, and Persona games for example. Video game soundtracks have to be addictive to be good. You have to be able to listen to them for hours on end and still enjoy it, and that\u2019s something I strive for in my own music as well.<br \/>\nAs for other Japanese artists, I really can\u2019t say I know too much. I do love a band called Toe that I know is from Japan. Incredibly nice instrumental, math rock kind of stuff. I\u2019ve spent a ton of time with all three of their full lengths. I\u2019ve also found myself addicted to almost anything produced by Yasutaka Nakata. Capsule, Perfume, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. I enjoy the hell out of those projects. It\u2019s an older album I wrote during my school years at University. Looking back, I was not at all on the right path during that time. Not pursuing what I was passionate about left me with feelings of depression during that time, and I was desperate for any form of escape. I became deeply attached to my dreams. I\u2019d record them in a journal and think about them all day, and through doing that the dreams became more and more vivid and harder to detach from. There was a period of two or so years after I discovered them where they were the only band I listened to. Their early work is intensely tragic and romantic, which touched me deeply at that young and sensitive age. They just had this magical flow to everything they wrote where every song just felt so grand and cinematic without ever being overbearing. I actually got to see Obscura perform in Tokyo during that trip, and ever since that show it has always been a dream of mine to perform in Japan one day.
