How did you come to love it? What Japanese artists do you like?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u3010OMERTA\u3011: <\/span><\/strong><\/span><em>We are extremely influenced by Japanese music. Actually, Japanese music was what some of us initially fell in love with. Growing up watching a lot of anime, much of our initial exposure to rock and metal came from anime opening and ending theme songs. We were obsessed with artists like Asian Kung-Fu Generation, UVERworld, Maximum the Hormone, flumpool, L&#8217;Arc~en~ciel, and more. Our producer and songwriter, Vincente Void, used to be in a band called Darke Complex, and they even toured with VAMPS &#8211; which you might know as the rock band started by Hyde and K.A.Z. Some of us also played a lot of video games when we were younger, and composers like Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy) and Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger) were our gateway to genres like jazz. What parts in particular do you find attractive?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u3010OMERTA\u3011: <\/span><\/strong><\/span><em> There are actually quite a few appealing distinctions to explore here. We could probably write an entire dissertation about the subject, but we\u2019ll try to condense it as much as possible haha. First of all, it\u2019s important to establish the context for our response. This might not make sense to Japanese people given that you\u2019ve grown up listening to this kind of music, but, having grown up in the US, mainstream music here tends to be very \u201csafe\u201d. All of us come from either Asian or Latin backgrounds. As such, our tastes were primed from a very young age by the music of our respective cultures, and the disconnect between Western music and non-Western music is incredibly apparent. On average, Western songs follow very inoffensive melodic and rhythmic conventions, shying away from things such as dissonance, key changes, chromaticism, polyrhythms, and so on. Japanese music, by contrast, often employs complexity and virtuosity as a default mode of songwriting and production. Even many of the biggest Japanese mainstream hits tout musical penmanship with such finesse that it makes Western music look amateur and incompetent by comparison. In addition to this, Japanese music is less concerned with genre distinctions and will indiscriminately pull from different styles of music spanning decades of theory and culture. For example, funk-inspired bass, jazz-inspired chord progressions, disco-inspired drum beats, and punk-inspired guitars are all typical elements comprising what can broadly be defined as J-Rock. Japanese music, no matter how modern, also usually incorporates some base level of ethnic influence in compositional elements like vocal melodies or scales. This is something that we strive to do with our own music &#8211; glorifying our culture, which we take pride in, by imbuing our work with it. Japanese media always had more of an edge to it than Western media, and, naturally, this made it much more appealing as a child growing up with a fascination for alternative culture. Whether this was due to the more mature subject matter, the art style, or what have you, there just seemed to be more depth and intention behind it than what would normally be available in the West. We also grew up with the internet, and Japanese media has an incredibly strong influence on many online communities &#8211; that\u2019s not even to mention Japanese technological prowess. To be honest, we consider genres to be an archaic way of classifying and conceptualizing music. Because of the internet, most young people have grown up with the ability to access the entire world\u2019s digitally archived collection of music on a whim. Nowadays, normal listening habits usually consist of a wide array of genres and artists &#8211; due to social media algorithms shaping behavioral patterns &#8211; rather than the more narrow tastes of yesteryear. As a band, our intention is not necessarily to build our music atop the pre-existing foundations of metalcore, nu metal, or any other genre that might have existed before us. Each one of these genres has a theoretical ceiling to it that it cannot breach, otherwise it ceases to be that very thing altogether. Case in point, look at the very recent lack of innovation in most guitar-based music, and you will soon notice the increasingly popular trend of recycling older genres (post-hardcore, shoegaze, metalcore, etc.) outright with zero progression. If anything, their older incarnations might have been even more ambitious and experimental than their strangely reductive, modern counterparts. Rather, our approach to writing music is to just ignore labels and simply write whatever feels the most appropriate. We firmly believe that artists are simply mediums through which divine inspiration is intuited, interpreted, and communicated. To restrict yourself to the confines of a genre is to risk distorting the beauty of something that has no existing equivalent. To that end, \u201cnu metal\u201d and \u201cmetalcore\u201d are two very flexible styles of expressing aggression that have both had their fair share of incredible, forward-thinking artists such as System of a Down, Issues, and Protest the Hero, who all seem to be cut from the same cloth as us.
