DISC REVIEW “REMEDIES”
メランコリックで詩情豊かなミュージックスープ。クロスオーバーの先を見据えるノルウェーのフォーサム SOUP が、ガラス細工のように繊細かつ美麗な壊れもの “Remedies” をリリースしました！ポストロックとプログ、そしてエレクトロニカの華麗なる融合は、斯くも鮮明に北の大地の優美で凛列なる風景を映し出します。
スカンジナビアの西端に息衝く創造性を体現する4人のシェフが2013年にリリースした “The Beauty Of Our Youth” は、ダイナミックかつメランコリックなポストロック、シューゲイズ、オルタナティブロックを起点にクラシカル、シネマティック、そしてエレクトロニカを股に掛けた味わい深いブレンドのスープとして結実し、舌の肥えた音楽ファンの五感を刺激した作品でした。それから4年。バンドは新たな具材と調味料を調達し、決定的な看板メニューを完成させたのです。
レシピの貴重なラストピースは70年代のノスタルジアを運ぶプログロックでした。そして、バンドのキャラクターであるコンテンポラリーなアトモスフィアと、郷愁を誘う有機的なプログロックの邂逅は究極の美へと昇華し、作品のタイトル “Remedies” を具現化する心の治療薬としてリスナーの元へと届けられることとなったのです。
インディーズの生々しいアコースティックサウンドで孤愁と共に幕を開けるオープナー “Going Somewhere” はアルバムへの招待状。ソリッドなドラムスを軸に、シンセサイザー、ストリングス、ギターエフェクトでデザインされた夢幻に揺らめくメロディーの洪水は、ポストロックのクレッシェンド、アトモスフィアと共に新たな “SOUP サウンド” のドアを押し開けて行くのです。
クライマックスは ‘The Boy and The Snow” で訪れます。実際、この11分間のエピックには進化の全てが注がれています。PORCUPINE TREE, KING CRIMSON, SNOW PATROL, MOGWAI。道を交えることのないプログ、インディー、ポストロックレジェンドたちの音像はここに溶け合い新たなケミストリーを創成します。
メロトロンやヴィンテージのギターサウンドは見事にモダンなアンビエンスと融合し、複雑に交差するリズムはポストロックの文脈へと浸透。さらに津波と化したハーモニーはインディーズのエモーションをも飲み込んで奇跡のサウンドスケープを実現し、胸を締め付ける追憶と共に現代へとリスナーの想い出を映し出しているのです。
アルバムのプロダクションを MOGWAI, FRANZ FERDINAND との仕事で知られる Paul Savage が手がけ、さらに Steven Wilson のビジュアルコラボレーター Lasse Hoile が作品のアートを担当したことはある意味象徴的にも思えます。
それにしてもこの楽曲のノスタルジックでドリーミーな世界に潜む、どこかヒリヒリとした緊張感、時に突き刺すような痛みは異常です。そしてその違和感の正体は、コンポーザー Erlend が幼年期に経験した通過儀礼だったのです。
｢実は “The Boy and The Snow” は15歳で凍死してしまった子供の頃の友人へ捧げたトリビュートなんだよ。｣ Erlend は躊躇いながらもそう語ってくれました。誰もが登る大人への階段には、必ず漆黒の闇や悲しみが宿ります。このエピソードを聞けば、唐突にも思えたチャーチオルガンの独奏、荘厳美の極み “Audion” が鎮魂の調べであることが伝わるでしょう。そして少年の魂が遂に召されたことも。
そうしてアルバムは現代に降臨した JETHRO TULL、”Sleepers” の躍動を経て “Nothing Like Home” で静かにその幕を閉じるのです。
今回弊誌では、ボーカルにしてキーボーディスト、サンプリングも担当する鬼才 Erlend Aastad Viken にインタビューを行うことが出来ました。勿論、メッセージのは彼らが敬愛する QUEEN の “Teo Torriatte” の一節。どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH ERLEND AASTAD VIKEN
Q1: Hi, Erlend! This is our first interview with you. So, first of all, could you tell us about yourself? What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?
【ERLEND】: Hello Sin, and thank you for reaching out! First off, let me thank you for your interest in Soup, and the music we make. We are humbled by the response we have received for our last album, Remedies. The album is a band effort, so both me, Espen, Ørjan and Jan Tore are proud of the response we get. The album was a band effort, so all the answers in this interview will be on behalf of us the band.
The music we listened to is so varied that it is hard to list them for you, but I can tell you that the result of this broad mix of genres have resulted in the originality of the Soup sound. Bruce Springsteen, to Beethoven, Camel, Celine Dion, Pink floyd, Sigur Ros and Sepultura have all been a vital part of the creation of this musical identity of ours. Over the last 10-15 years, our listening habits have mostly evolved around bands like Radiohead, Mogwai, King Crimson, Godspeed, Mono, Sigur Ros and some other stuff, but for the most part we are more into making stuff than listening to stuff. But new inspirations are always interesting.
Q1: 本誌初登場です！まずは、あなたの音楽的なバックグラウンドについて話していだけますか？
【ERLEND】: まずは、SOUP とその音楽に興味を持ってくれてありがとう！最新作 “Remedies” に対するレスポンスの大きさには驚いているんだよ。
このアルバムはバンドの努力の結晶なんだ。だから、僕、Espen, Ørjan, そして Jan Tore はそういったレスポンスを誇りに思っているんだよ。このインタビューもバンド全員を代表して僕が答えているんだ。
僕たちが聴いて育った音楽は、あまりにバラエティー豊かだから全てを挙げることは難しいね。ただ、そういったジャンル間のクロスオーバーが結果として SOUP のオリジナリティーとなっていることは伝えて置くべきだろうな。
Bruce Springsteen から Beethoven, CAMEL, Celine Dion, PINK FLOYD, SIGUR ROS, そして SEPULTURA は常に僕たちの音楽にとって重要な創造性の源となって来たんだよ。
ここ10年、15年で僕たちの音楽的な嗜好はさらに幅を広げて行ったね。RADIOHEAD, MOGWAI, KING CRIMSON, GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR, MONO なんかに入れ込んでいるんだ。
ただ、今となっては僕たちの興味の大部分は、音楽を聴くより作る事に移っているね。勿論、新たなインスピレーションはいつだって興味深いけどね。
Q2: What inspired you to start singing, playing keyboard and composing? Who was your musical hero at that time?
【ERLEND】: I started making music when I was a kid, but it was first at the age of 20-21 I really started doing stuff that I can relate to to date. Michael Jackson was my favorite as I composed my first tunes as a kid, but I guess that doesn’t relate to the music you’ll find on Remedies, haha.
Q2: では、あなたがボーカルやキーボード、そして作曲を始めたきっかけは何でしたか？
【ERLEND】: 子供の頃から音楽を作ってはいたんだ。ただ、今日の僕たちの音楽に関係するような作品を真剣に制作し始めたのは、20くらいの時だったね。
子供の頃に楽曲を作り始めたのは、大好きな Michael Jackson がきっかけだったんだ。ただ、”Remedies” の音楽に関連性を見出すのは難しいだろうね。（笑）
Q3: From Muse, Steven Wilson to Sigur Ros, your diverse music is kind of “Music Soup”. Does it relates to your band name?
【ERLEND】: Correct. It also relates to the way we compose music. It is kind of a cliche , I am sorry about that, haha.
Q3: 先程、多様性こそがバンドのオリジナリティーだと仰いましたが、では SOUP というバンド名も “音楽のスープ” という意味合いからつけたのでしょうか？
【ERLEND】: 正しいよ。それに、僕たちが作曲を行う方法とも関係しているね。クリシェのようなものだよ。
Q4: So, let’s talk about your newest record “Remedies”. Firstly, I’d like to tell you many thanks. Because, “Remedies” is literary “Remedies” for me. The beauty of this record keeps my fatigue away. Anyway, what made you choose this title for the record?
【ERLEND】: Jan Tore came ut with the title, and it rang true with the content of the album. It is a beautiful word too, and it fits both the visuals, the sonics and the lyrics of the album. Well done, JT!
Q4: では最新作 “Remedies” について話しましょう。実際このレコードは私にとって “治療” の意味を持ちます。作品が持つ美しさは、日常の疲れや精神的な苦痛を取り去ってくれていますよ。
【ERLEND】: Jan Tore がこのタイトルを思いついたんだ。確かに、アルバムの内容を伝えているように思えたね。それに美しい言葉だし、サウンドと歌詞両方のイメージにフィットしたんだ。JT は良くやってくれたね！
Q5: “The Boy and the Snow” is typically, your music always reminds me beautiful nostalgia and landscape. Where did the inspiration come from, when you were writing this masterpiece?
【ERLEND】: Hmm.. The Boy and The Snow is a tribute to one of my childhood friends who froze to death when he was 15. It is a sad story that aims to honor his memory and keep his spirit alive. It is a story of childhood memories and the pitch black psyche you can encounter also growing up. The song was created as a band jam, and the energy of the music allowed for the lyrics to take place and embody the song. We are glad to hear you like the song. It is a good thing to know.
Q5: “The Boy and The Snow” は典型的ですが、SOUP の音楽は美しきノスタルジーを感じさせてくれます。この楽曲のインスピレーションについて話していただけますか？
【ERLEND】: うーん、そうだな…いや、実は “The Boy and The Snow” は15歳で凍死してしまった子供の頃の友人へ捧げたトリビュートなんだよ。悲しい話だけど、彼の思い出を讃え、彼のスピリットを生かし続けるために楽曲にしたんだよ。
子供の頃の思い出話で、同時に誰もが成長の過程で出会う漆黒のトラウマなのさ。
この楽曲はバンドのジャムセッションから生まれたんだ。そしてこの音楽のエナジーこそが、この歌詞を楽曲へと埋めることへの許しだったのかも知れないね。君がこの楽曲を気に入ってくれて嬉しいよ。それを知れたことは本当に良かった…
Q6: So, Erlend, your keyboard, sampling sound seems to be center of Soup. Melotoron, Church organ, and even some electronic noises gives the songs dreamy, nice atmosphere. And it’s sometimes nostalgic, sometimes modern. What do you think about the balance between the two?
【ERLEND】: I believe that the synth elements give a different dimension to these compositions, that might have fallen into the traditional rock category if I was not a part of it. I am glad that this is recognized as a vital piece of the sound. The ambient also comes from Ørjans way of painting landscapes with his effectuated guitar playing. all in all it brings meaning to the bigger picture.
Q6: あなたのキーボードサウンドは SOUP の根幹だと感じます。勿論、メロトロンやチャーチオルガンはノスタルジアを演出しますが、同時にコンテンポラリーなエレクトロニカサウンドやノイズでドリーミーな空間を生み出したりもしていますよね？ノスタルジーとモダンの間に存在する対比やバランスについては意識していますか？
【ERLEND】: 僕はシンセサイザーの要素がこれらの楽曲のコンポジションに異なる次元を付与すると信じているんだ。それ故に、僕はそう思っていなくてもトラディショナルなロックのカテゴリーに分類されたりもするんだけどね。
ただ、僕のキーボードがバンドにとって不可欠なサウンドだと思ってくれているのは嬉しいよ。楽曲のアンビエンスは、Ørjans のエフェクターを効かせたギターでまるで風景を描くように奏でるサウンドからも生まれているんだけどね。勿論、全てのパートがより大きな絵画に意味をもたらしているんだけどね。
Q7: Shoegaze, Post-rock sound is definitely one of your symbol as well as prog sound. Paul Savage who produced Mogwai involved in the production of “Remedies”. Does it relate to your Post-rock roots?
【ERLEND】: Pauls influences were primarily of engineering character, but we wanted to work with him based on what you just pointed out. We have some post rock roots in the band, as well as both electronic-, singer songwriter-, prog-, and shoegaze influences. So all in all the collaboration with Paul was very fitting for us. He is the best guy to work with, and we are lucky to be working with him.
Q7: シューゲイズ、ポストロックサウンドはプログサウンドと並んでバンドのシンボルだと感じます。MOGWAI を手がけた Paul Savage を起用した理由もその辺りにありそうですね？
【ERLEND】: Paul を起用したのはまずはそのエンジニアリングの性質からだったんだけど、確かに僕たちが彼と働きたいと思ったのは君が指摘したような理由もあるんだよ。
僕たちのバンドにはある程度ポストロックのルーツが存在するね。エレクトロニカ、シンガーソングライター、プログ、シューゲイズからの影響と並んでね。だから概して Paul とのコラボレーションは僕たちにとてもフィットしたと言えるんだ。共に仕事を行うにも最高の人物だし、彼と仕事が出来てラッキーだったね。
Q8: So, I’ve had interview with lot’s of Norwegian prog new waves, like Leprous, Shining, Major Parkinson and Wobbler. I feel your country becomes the melting pot or cross road of diverse and eclectic modern prog. What’s your perspective about the scene?
【ERLEND】: To tell you the truth, there are others than me who are fit to answer this question. I often hear that Norway seems like a good place for interesting new bands, and I am proud to hear this. I am not very good at taking in new bands myself, and do not really know the scene that well. Hopefully you have a better view on thing than I do!
Q8: ノルウェーはプログレッシブの新たな息吹が躍動しているように思えますが、音楽シーンはいかがですか？
【ERLEND】: 正直に言って、僕はこの質問に対する回答の適任者ではないと思うな。勿論、ノルウェーが興味深い新たなバンドの産地に思えるという話は良く聞くね。それに関しては誇りに思うよ。
ただ、僕自身は新たなバンドをディグるのが得意ではないし、本当にシーンについても良く知らないんだ。君の方が良く知っているんじゃないかな！
