DISC REVIEW “MELTED ON THE INCH”
香ばしき霞とファズサウンドは心地良き酩酊を。マスマティカルで複雑怪奇なデザインは遥かな叡智を。英国ウィガンに実る罪なるハーブ BOSS KELOID は、その類稀なる両極性と多様性でオーディエンスの中毒症状を掻き立てます。
前作 “Herb Your Enthusiasm” でスラッジとストーナーの風変わりなキメラとして一躍脚光を浴びた破調の怪異は、ROLO TOMMASI, MOL, SVALBARD といった他の Holy Roar ロースターとシンクロするかのように更なるエクレクティックな進化を遂げています。
特筆すべきは、キーボーディスト Matthew Milne の加入でしょう。｢キーボードは完璧にバンドへとフィットしたし、今では僕らのサウンドの本質にさえなっているんだよ。だけど、方向性をシフトした訳じゃないよ。言ってみればそれは自然な進化なんだ。｣ とギタリスト Paul Swarbrick が語るように、バンドは新機軸と言うよりも、むしろパズルのラストピースとして迎えたレトロな鍵盤の響きを得て、エニグマティックなプログロックの領域をより大胆に探求することとなったのです。
幻想的でアンセミックな旋律、奇想天外なアイデアの波動、そして複雑繊細な感情の妙。プログ由来の素材と調味料をふんだんに使用し、出自であるスラッジ、ドゥーム、ストーナーの香ばしきバンズで挟み込んだ滑らかに溶け合う両極性のサウンドウィッチ “Melted on the Inch” は、そうして実際リスナーに刺激的な幻覚や研ぎ澄まされた感性をもたらす合法的なドラッグなのかも知れませんね。
事実、BOSS KELOID のダイアゴナルな魔法は、オープナー “Chronosiam” ですぐさまリスナーの時空間を歪ませます。
威風堂々のストーナーファンファーレをエントランスに、ハモンドとスタッカートの静謐な小部屋から、フォーキーにスウィングするダンスホール、シンガロングを誘うキャッチーな大劇場まで、多様な時代と背景をシームレスに行き交う進化を遂げたバンドの姿は、まさにダイナミズムの異世界迷宮。そしてそのエクレクティックな地脈回廊は、アルバム全体へと行き渡り胎動していくのです。
レゲエとラスタの多幸感をスラッジストーナーの重量感へ封じた “Peykruve” の実験も、ハーブマスターならではの奇妙でしかし鮮やかなコントラストでしょう。そして何より、PALLBEARER が PINK FLOYD や ASIA への憧憬を隠そうとしないように、BOSS KELOID も “Lokannok” で CAMEL をドゥームの領域へと誘って、伸張するモダンメタルの新たな潮流に一役買って見せました。
「もっとプログ寄りのファンからは、CAMEL, GENESIS, KING CRIMSON を想起させるなんて言われているしね。」 もしかすると、古の巨人が宿したプログレッシブな魂は、ジャンルの後進よりも BOSS KELOID のようなバンドこそが正しく継いでいるのかも知れませんね。

INTERVIEW WITH PAUL SWARBRICK
Q1: This is the first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about yourself and band? What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?
【PAUL】: I’m Paul and I play guitar in the band. We are all from Wigan in the northwest of England. We formed in 2010 and our latest album ‘Melted On The Inch’ was released April 2018 on Holy Roar Records.
Growing up I mainly listened to music from the heavier end of the spectrum including bands like Keelhaul, Botch, Kyuss, Neurosis, RATM. These days I still listen to a lot of heavy music but more down the progressive and eclectic avenues.
Q1: 本誌初登場です！まずはあなたの音楽的なバックグラウンドからお話していただけますか？
【PAUL】: 僕は Paul。バンドではギターを担当しているよ。僕たちは全員がイングランドの北西部、ウィガンの出身なんだ。BOSS KELOID を結成したのは2010年で、最新作 “Melted on the Inch” は Holy Roar Records から4月にリリースされているよ。
僕の場合は、成長するにつれて主に KEELHAUL, BOTCH, KYUSS, NEUROSIS, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE といったよりヘヴィーな領域の音楽を聴くようになったね。そして最近でも、ヘヴィーな音楽は沢山聴いているんだけど、よりプログレッシブでエクレクティックな方向を掘り下げるようになったね。
Q2: How did the band come to be? Boss Keloid is very impressive name. But what’s the meaning behind that?
【PAUL】: I always wanted to start a band ever since I was 12 when I started playing guitar. It took me till the age of 32 before I started Boss Keloid and got Alex (vocals and guitar) and Liam (bass) on board in 2010. Ste (drums) joined when we were writing our second album in 2011 and Matt joined 2017 on keyboards at the start of the MOTI writing process. We’re all a bit weird and we have a shared love for making and listening to weird and interesting music.
The name derives from an Iron Monkey song. I thought it was an unusual and enigmatic name and would be cool to have it as a band name.
Q2: BOSS KELOID 結成の経緯や、バンド名の由来について教えてください。
【PAUL】: 僕は12歳でギターを始めて以来、ずっとバンドをやりたかったんだ。結果として、ボーカル/ギターの Alex, ベースの Liam と BOSS KELOID を始めたのが32歳の時だから、20年かかったことになるね。2010年のことだよ。
そして僕たちが2ndアルバムを書いていた2011年に、ドラムの Ste が加わったのさ。キーボーディストの Matt が加入したのは “Melted on the Inch” の作曲を始めた2017年のことだったね。僕たちは全員が少し変わっているんだけど、だからこそ変わっていて興味深い音楽を聴いたり制作することに全員が愛情を持っているんだよ。
BOSS KELOID という名前は IRON MONKEY の楽曲に由来しているんだ。普通ではないし、謎めいている名前だから、僕たちのバンド名にしたらクールだと思ったんだよ。
Q3: Musically, what was the initial blueprint of Boss Keloid? Have it changed as time passing by?
【PAUL】: Our music has definitely evolved over the years and 4 albums. It’s gone from being primarily focussed on smashing out the weird riffs and grooves, to something which has more dynamics, emotion, melody and variety. We are enjoying a more experimental and bi-polar approach to creating music these days.
Q3: 音楽的に、結成当初はどの様な青写真を描き、そしてどの様に変貌を遂げて来たのでしょう？
【PAUL】: 僕たちの音楽は、ここ何年か、4枚のアルバムをへて進化しているよ。最初は奇妙なリフやグルーヴにフォーカスしていたんだけど、今ではよりダイナミズム、エモーション、メロディー、そして多様性を加えているね。
最近では、より実験的で、両極性を持つアプローチで音楽を創造し楽しんでいるんだ。
Q4: As your previous record “Herb Your Enthusiasm” shows, it seems marijuana is one of your big theme, right? Marijuana is strictly prohibited in Japan. What’s your perspective about that?
【PAUL】: It shouldn’t be prohibited anywhere and should be completely legalised for cultivation, medical and recreational use. It should be a normal thing like eating a potato and part of the recommended 5 a day.
Q4: 前作のタイトル “Herb Your Enthusiasm” は象徴的ですが、マリファナはバンドの大きなテーマの一つですよね？日本では禁止されているのですが。
【PAUL】: マリファナはどんな場所でだって禁止されるべきじゃないし、栽培、医療、レクリエーション、どの目的においても合法化されるべきなんだ。
マリファナの使用は、例えばポテトを食べるのと同じくらい普通のことだし、1日に5回摂取するのを推奨するのが我々の務めだ。
Q5: OK, let’s talk about your newest record “Melted on the Inch”. First of all, the artwork is incredible! Who wrote the artwork? And is there any connection between the artwork and the lyrical theme or music of the album?
【PAUL】: Thankyou very much. There is a thread that runs through the album’s lyrics and artwork to do with self belief, being honest, being true to yourself, being able to push away all the unnatural bullshit that gets thrown at you every day.
Q5: では最新作 “Melted on the Inch” について話しましょう。まず、一目でアートワークが気に入ったのですが、このデザインは作品のテーマと関連しているのでしょうか？
【PAUL】: どうもありがとう。アルバムの歌詞とアートワークには一連のメッセージが込められていてね。自信を持つこと、正直になること、自らを偽らないこと、毎日君たちを悩ませる人道に反するクソみたいな出来事だって撥ね返すことが出来ることを伝えているんだよ。
Q6: Compared with “Herb Your Enthusiasm”, lot’s of keyboard are added and it seems you explore more “Progressive” sound in this record. What made you shift your direction?
【PAUL】: Ste had in mind a while ago to bring keyboards into our music to add a new tasty layer. The time was right and he strongly suggested getting Matt involved at the start of the MOTI writing process. Matt fitted in just lovely and it is intrinsic with our sound now. It wasn’t a shift in direction, it felt like a natural evolution as we wanted to really challenge and push ourselves on this album.
Q6: “Herb Your Enthusiasm” と比較して、”Melted on the Inch” ではキーボードサウンドが多く加えられ、よりプログレッシブな領域を探求しているように感じました。
【PAUL】: しばらく前に、Ste が僕たちの音楽にキーボードを持ち込んで新たなテイストを織り込もうと思いついたんだ。適切なタイミングだったし、Ste は “Melted on the Inch” のライティングプロセス当初から Matt を参加させることを強く望んだんだ。
Matt は実にラブリーにバンドへとフィットしたし、今では僕らのサウンドの本質にさえなっているんだよ。ただ、方向性をシフトした訳じゃないよ。言ってみれば自然な進化なんだ。なぜなら、僕たちはこのアルバムで本当に変化を望み、自らをプッシュしたんだからね。
Q7: Especially in this record, you are often compared with “Prog Sludge” acts like Mastodon, Baroness, Pallbearer and maybe Neurosis and Gojira too. What’s your perspective about that comparison and label?
【PAUL】: They are amazing bands and it’s cool to hear those comparisons. Every person has their own frame of reference. We’ve had some people who aren’t necessarily into heavy music but more into prog type bands have said we have elements that remind them of Camel, Genesis, King Crimson. We’ve had people say it’s self indulgent toss which is probably the best compliment we’ve had.
Q7: 特にこの作品では、MASTODON, BARONESS といったプログスラッジ、さらには PALLBEARER, GOJIRA, NEUROSIS とも比較されると思いますが？
【PAUL】: 彼らはみんな素晴らしいバンドだし、比較されるのはクールなことだよ。まあ人によってそれぞれ比較する対象は様々だろうな。
例えば、特にヘヴィーな音楽にのめり込んでいなくて、もっとプログ寄りのファンからは、CAMEL, GENESIS, KING CRIMSON を想起させるなんて言われているしね。まあ僕たちは彼に、それはちょっと褒めすぎだけど、最高の賛辞だよと言ったんだ。
Q8: So, Holy Roar Records definitely catches a great deal of attention from metal scene, along with incredible rooster like you, Mol, Conjurer, Rolo Tomassi, Svalbard, Ohhms. What’s your perspective about the label’s view and rooster?
【PAUL】: They have an open mind and ear for interesting and exciting bands, some that are less known than others. All the bands you’ve mentioned are awesome. We recently toured the UK with Ohhms which was a great experience. They’re a passionate and talented bunch of lovely humans.
Q8: MOL, CONJURER, ROLO TOMMASI, SVALBARD, OHHMS 等と共に、BOSS KELOID は Holy Roar Records の航海に同乗し注目を浴びています。
【PAUL】: Holy Roar Records はとてもオープンマインドで、興味深くエキサイティングなバンドへの研ぎ澄まされた感性を持っているね。例え認知度が低いようなバンドに対してもね。
もちろん、君が挙げたバンドは素晴らしいよ。最近も、OHHMS と UK をツアーしたんだけど、素晴らしい体験だったね。彼らは実に情熱的で才能に満ち溢れたラブリーなヒューマンたちなんだ。
