EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH MARK OWEN OF WE LOST THE SEA !!
“People In Music And In All Walks Of Life Have Always Faced Depression And Anxiety And Maybe We Are Just Better At Recognising It Out Now.”
DISC REVIEW “TRIUMPH & DISASTER”
WE LOST THE SEA
WE LOST THE SEA

INTERVIEW WITH MARK OWEN
Q1: This is the first interview with you. So, at first could you tell us about yourself and the band. What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?
【MARK】: We Lost The Sea is an instrumental band that has been together for about 12-13 years now in one form or another. We all live in and around Sydney, Australia, and we’ve just put out our fourth record ‘Triumph & Disaster.’
Growing up I had a pretty good, varied bunch of music that I listened too. My dad was a huge Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Neil Young fan, my mum loved Elton John, Queen, Bon Jovi, and my eldest sister listened mainly to Australian independent music. I fell in love, early on, with post hardcore/hardcore bands like Poison The Well, Converge and Will Haven and then had two life changing moments with Cult Of Luna’s ‘Somewhere Along the Highway’and Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s ‘Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada’.
【MARK】: WE LOST THE SEA
POISON THE WELL, CONVERGE, WILL HAVEN CULT OF LUNA の “Somewhere Along the Highway” と、GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR の “Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada” だよ。
Q2: How did We Lost the Sea come to be? What’s the meaning behind your band name “We Lost the Sea”?
【MARK】: I used to play in a terrible metal band when I was just out of high school, I was a very average drummer, and I think we played three shows total. One day at band practise we got up the courage to bust into the room next door and watch a band of slightly older dudes play a song or two. This band was called Omerata and they were MONSTROUS. I walked back into my band’s room, and said, “I am not playing drums anymore I am playing guitar and we are playing SLOW”. This didn’t go down too well and eventually the band fell apart. While I was studying in Sydney, I’d run into the drummer from Omerata from time to time. Eventually I convinced him to have a jam with me and it just clicked. Now, 13 years later, I’ve somehow roped the majority of Omerata into We Lost The Sea, and it’s the best it has ever been.
The meaning of the name is meant to be ambiguous, it can mean nothing or can mean something. I thought at the time it just sounded epic, and the idea of sitting on a cliff and looking out to where an ocean used to be seemed HUGE and that’s the sound I wanted for the band.
Q2: WE LOST THE SEA
Q3: Your debut record “Crimea” is mixed by Magnus of Cult of Luna. So, it seems they were one of big inspiration when you started the band, right?
【MARK】: Yes, CoL were a huge influence early on. Working with Magnus was at the time a dream come true and very surreal. Turns out that if you are a band from Sydney who has zero members of Cult of Luna in your band then no matter who records your album you won’t sound like Cult Of Luna. We found that out pretty quickly ha ha.
Q4: So, we are really shocked and sad when we heard the news of Chris’s passing…since then, there has been no vocalist in the band. I feel that describe how important Chris was. Do you agree that?
【MARK】: Yes absolutely. Chris was an integral part of the band, musically and personally, and no one will ever fill his shoes.
Q5: On 2014, We Lost The Sea held a tribute Chris and benefit show to raise awareness and money for suicide prevention and education surrounding depression and anxiety. Recently, lot’s of rock musicians face to depression and anxiety. What’s your perspective about the problem?
【MARK】: I think thats a really big question, and I’d hate to dumb down or oversimplfy the issue by simply saying the musicians are tortoured or you need the pain for art or any of those cliche’ things. Is any of that true? Maybe. I think, from my perspective, people in music and in all walks of life have always faced depression and anxiety and maybe we are just better at recognising it out now. I know that I have my own demons and that music is a great way for me to focus my energy. I also know that just music alone isn’t enough, so I encourage anyone struggling with any issues to speak to someone about it.
Q6: “Departure Songs” was your first all-instrumental album and heavily affected by the loss of Chris. After the epic journey of “departure”, it seems you continue to describe the “loss” and tragedy in “Triumph & Disaster”, but I feel there is a bit of more hope compared with your previous record. How about that?
【MARK】: We intentionally set out to write a bleak record, and we actually debated if we should let the album have any hope in it. In the end we decided that without hope what is the point of anything? In regards to The Mother and Son in the story, if there is no hope for any of us, then why do we care about their relationship or their love? What about our own children, and people we care about? I think the humanity and hope in all of us, made us inject a bit more optimism into this album. Not much, just a little.
“Triumph & Disaster”
Q7: It was surprise you appoint female singer Louise Netting on final track “Mother’s Hymn”. What made you use “vocal” this time again in this beautiful song?
【MARK】: We’ve all been a massive fan of Louise and her solo project “Wartime Sweethearts” for a long time, and when I first had the idea for the song in my head I knew I wanted someone with an incredible voice to sing on it. I sent her a really basically idea, and told her what I was hoping for and what she sent back had me drunkenly walking around my lounge room drinking red wine with my eyes closed and hands in the air. She nailed it, and I knew it had to be on the album.
WE LOST THE SEA
Q8: When I had an interview with Brian from Russian Circles, he said “I do think there are some parallels between Pelican and our records. I know that “Nighttime Stories” is meant to convey frustration towards the current political climate in America, and while we share in that frustration and animosity towards the current administration. that’s why it’s an angry-sounding album”. Of course you are Australian, but I feel you have some common point with them regarding dark atmosphere and theme of “humanity”. Do you think there are some synchronicity between these “Post-metal” bands?
【MARK】: That’s a long and complicated answer ha ha. I think to keep it brief I’ll say just this one thing about it; When people want to write honest, moving and powerful music it needs to be genuine and from the heart. If you take the time to really play from within yourself and spend time reflecting, I think you immediately question the rest of humanity’s disingenuous behavior. You question your own government’s commitment to its people, you question your own beliefs and so on. This then manifests itself in your music. I learnt early on that most people will see your bullshit straight away, and if you present something as honest and it’s not, they will see through it immediately. I think people in the “post” world who are trying to write moving ideas without lyrics understand this (well, the good ones do) and they know how to use it.
