EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH DAVE DAVIDSON OF GARGOYL !!

‘For Me a Band Like Alice In Chains Does Have Progressive Edge To Them Even Though They’re Considered Grunge. They Definitely Weren’t Just Taking a Radio Rock Approach, They Always Had Something New To Say With Every Album.”

DISC REVIEW “GARGOYL”

ALICE IN CHAINS + OPETH,

INTERVIEW WITH DAVE DAVIDSON

Q1: From the Corona crisis to Black Lives Matter, and big climate change, this world is going through a turbulent time right now. And we lost even Eddie Van Halen. First of all, what’s your perspective about the situation?

【DAVE】: We’re at a very pivotal moment not just in America, but globally. The pandemic has revealed how interconnected we all are and how imperative it is that we as a species work together to make the world a better place for current and future generations. I’m deeply troubled by the rise of authoritarian leaders worldwide and I fear that these leaders will become more emboldened as the effects of climate change become more destructive leaving people without hope and desperate for answers. My hope is that America can embrace a more scientific way of thinking and vote out the politicians that have corrupted the very fabric of our democracy for their own personal gain. Regarding the passing of EVH, that was obviously a sad day for guitarists and music fans everywhere, he truly changed the way the guitar is played and that is no exaggeration. As if 2020 couldn’t get any worse….

Q2: Gargoyl is a band that is very different from Revocation. First of all, could you tell us why you started this band?

【DAVE】: I wanted a project that would showcase some of my different influences, something that would be a departure from the music that I’m normally associated with so that I could present a different side to myself as an artist.

Q3: When I first heard Gargoyl, the first thing I remember was Alice In Chains. It’s a great continuation of their signature vocal harmonies, isn’t it?

【DAVE】: I would say we’re all influenced greatly by Alice In Chains, however Luke definitely has an approach that’s very unique to himself and he really strives to be an individual. I think you can hear a multitude of influences in his style but he also has a uniqueness to his phrasing and note choices that sets him apart. For me it’s the best of both worlds, there’s a familiarity to his voice but there’s also an ineffable quality to it.

Q4: Speaking of grunge, the major bands, Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam, for example, are no longer working with the same grunge image and music they had back then, right? Plus, at the time, grunge was said to have made guitar solos uncool. Why did you take up the musicality of grunge in 2020 now?

【DAVE】: I think we wanted to pay homage to our influences in some ways but we needed to do it in our own way. We’re not trying to be a throwback band, but rather, a band that can take those influences and expand upon them. For me a band like Alice In Chains does have progressive edge to them even though they’re considered grunge. I’ve always loved Jerry Cantrell’s solos even though they weren’t super flashy or particularly abundant. He also had a great ear for unique riffs as well, they definitely weren’t just taking a radio rock approach, they always had something new to say with every album. I knew that I wanted to work within a rock frame work with this project but I wanted to bring that same forward thinking mentality to the writing process.

Q5: However, you guys aren’t bringing back the grunge as it is either, right? If we listen closely to the album, there are some really progressive challenges in many places. Are you comfortable with the term “progressive grunge”?

【DAVE】: It’s kinda funny to read all the labels that critics have been giving us. I like that people are having a hard time defining our sound or are having to resort to what might be considered oxymorons to describe us. For me we’re a progressive rock band in the truest sense of the word “progressive”.

Q6: Speaking of progressives, I could see the influence of Faith No More on the album. A band we couldn’t avoid if you were a 90s kid, right?

【DAVE】: Yeah I’m a huge Faith No More fan. I love Mike Patton’s vocal style and his whole stage persona. He’s always pushing the envelope, always trying to elicit a response from the audience. He can be incredibly abrasive and then on the very next song he might be singing a ballad in a very tender way. He’s really got an incredible range.

Q7: It seemed to prove that you can make incredibly heavy music without screams, blast beats, and fast riffs. Would you agree?

【DAVE】: I do. I get to obviously scratch that itch with Revocation since that makes up the backbone of our sound but there are many ways to be heavy. To me classical music and jazz can be super heavy, it isn’t just about a guy screaming into a mic with trem picked guitars and blast beats. It’s about attitude and the aggression that can come from creating tension within a song, something that might evoke anxiety, existential dread or the cathartic, explosive release that comes when you resolve that tension in a climactic way.

Q8: The United States has a presidential election coming up. Our previous interview, you said “Greed and self interest motivates a lot of the suffering in the world. The human species is often prone to tribalism which tends to create strong, polarizing divides in society.” Do you think the US will be able to make the right choice?

【DAVE】: I certainly hope so but I’m not super optimistic. We’re living in a completely divided nation right now with people literally getting two different sets of “facts” which are drastically distorting many people’s ideas of what reality even is. There’s a good portion of America that believe the Corona virus is just a hoax or at the very least something that isn’t a serious issue. If we can’t agree on basic things like simple science then it’s going to be very hard to come together over more complex issues. Sadly, there is no room for nuanced discussions in our society, everything is reduced to soundbites and slogans, one liners meant to shame the other side. I want to believe that we can pull back from the brink but at this moment I feel like the divide is too deep, I think violence will be inevitable no matter what the outcome of the election.
