NEW DISC REVIEW + INTERVIEW 【ALARUM : CIRCLE’S END】

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH MARK PALFREYMAN OF ALARUM !!

“Bands Like Atheist And Cynic Were Big Influences On Our Band And Helped Inspire Us To Explore What We Could Do With Music. They Both Covered a Lot Of Ground And Continue To Do So.”

DISC REVIEW “CIRCLE’S END”

ALARUM “CIRCLE’S END” : 10/10

INTERVIEW WITH MARK PALFREYMAN

Q1: I understand that you guys formed in 1992, right? At that time there were not many bands in Australia playing progressive/technical death metal like you do, would you agree?

【MARK】: Alarum originally formed around 1992. Starting as a high school metal band, it became death metal after some line-up changes.
The vocalist Luke Morris got throat nodules, the band had some other issues and by 1995 had stopped/went into hiatus.
I was playing in a couple of bands since the late 80’s, early 90’s – Chaos Mongers (thrash/crossover/punk) and Evil Mist (Tech/Prog Thrash) and was friends with original Alarum vocalist/bassist Stephen Wattie.
He mentioned to me in 1995 that drummer Matt Racovalis was looking to start a new band after Alarum and was looking for a bass player.
His school mate Scott Young was on guitar and the 3 of us started jamming.
We jammed songs by Pantera, Alice In Chains, Satriani, Sepultura, Kreator, Faith No More, Metallica etc and started writing original material.
It was clear that we all had a broad range of influences and were interested in playing more than just death metal.
Friends and previous Alarum members watched us rehearse and it was decided late 1995 to restart Alarum with Scott on guitar, Matt on drums, myself on bass, Mark Evans on guitar and Luke on vocals.
As we began writing songs we all realised a mutual love of bands such as Death, Atheist, Cynic, Pestilence, Satriani etc so we set out to explore writing music that was open to bringing in different elements to combine with metal.
We did one show in Jan 1996 as a 5-piece band.
When recording a demo mid 1996, Luke decided to leave the band and I took over on vocal duties.
At that time, there weren’t many bands playing progressive/technical metal and we got out and played shows with many different bands. Our shows were well received however at the time our music went over a lot of people’s heads.
Some other Australian bands from late 80’s/90’s/early 2000’s that played a more progressive/technical style of metal were Taramis, Alchemist, Vanishing Point, Omnium Gatherum (Omnium), Death’s Boundaries & Psycroptic.

PANTERA, ALICE IN CHAINS, Joe Satriani, SEPLTURA, KREATOR, FAITH NO MORE, METALLICA

Q2: Your musicianship and high technique is phenomenal. When you first started playing your instrument, what musicians were your heroes?

【MARK】: Thank you for your kind words!
When I started playing bass and singing around 1987, my heroes were (and still are) Cliff Burton (Metallica), Dan Lilker (S.O.D/Nuclear Assault), Tom Araya (Slayer), Phil Rind (Sacred Reich), Rob Nicholson (Cryptic Slaughter), Chuck Schuldiner (Death), Schmier (Destruction) & Louis Johnson. As I grew older and discovered other music beyond thrash metal/crossover the hero list expanded much more.

Q3: It has been nine years since your last album “Natural Causes”. Why did it take so long?

【MARK】: There are many reasons.
Shortly before releasing Natural Causes, guitarist Mark left.
John Sanders joined Alarum at that point and after the Natural Causes album release, years were spent touring and working on writing/demoing Circle’s End material.
A few different line-up changes occurred during the process (including Ryan Williams/guitar, Rob Brens/drums leaving) which added delay as we went through some stop and start stages.
Scott had re-joined Alarum in late 2012 and drummer Ben Hocking from The Levitation Hex (another band Scott & I play in) helped us record the drums in 2017.
Once drums were recorded we spent a couple of years recording the rest of the album and producing/mixing it together with Neil Kernon.
Once completed, another year passed until it’s release (delayed with label shopping and our original release date being pushed back 4 months due to delay with album manufacturing/ album tour cancelation and covid issues).
Time flies when you’re having fun!

Q4: In order to immerse myself more deeply into the world of “Circle’s End”, could you tell us about the concept of the album and the theme of the lyrics?

【MARK】: Firstly, we really wanted to stay true to the themes the band had touched on previously.
Self-realization, self-improvement, the search for understanding, meaning and purpose in life, humanities place in the universe, science and even pseudo-science.
Then it started to come together during the course of several discussions regarding how long John had been in the band without releasing anything he had actually played on or written and the fact that much of the material Scott and I were contributing was written before Natural Causes was released.
In the case of Scott, he had quit the band in 2007 when Natural Causes was starting to be put together. He had originally hoped to use most of this material on that album.
So, for Scott and myself this was somewhat a closing of a chapter or coming to an end of that particular era.
Then in terms of John, it was the beginning of a new era in the band for him where he would actually be playing material he had written.
What ends where it begins? Or begins where it ends? – a circle.
Scott had wanted to use the title Circle’s End since he had come across the band of the same name in 2008 and now this felt like the perfect fit.
Because this felt like it was both an end and a beginning we decided to reflect the artwork from the previous releases in this artwork. If people look closely they may be able to find references to the first three albums.

Q4: “Circle’s End”

Q5: Bands like Atheist and Cynic, for example, show influences from the cosmic atmosphere and jazz/fusion, but your approach is more daring and drastic, would you agree?

【MARK】: Bands like Atheist and Cynic were big influences on our band and helped inspire us to explore what we could do with music. They both covered a lot of ground and continue to do so.
There’s so many styles of music that we enjoy listening to and which have not often been mixed in with heavy music by many.
It is still fun and challenging for us to write music that blends different sounds together, let’s see how much more daring and drastic we can get…

Q6: Because in the realm of death metal where darkness reigns, ethereal and uplifting sounds like “Crystals” are really rare, right? It’s a truly unheard of contrast, isn’t it?

【MARK】: It is something different that’s for sure.
A lot of our lyrics are of a more uplifting nature so it comes naturally that we incorporate some music to reflect this.
Crystals is an idea which John bought in and helps break up the heavier side of our music.
It also features some guest musicians which was something new for us to try.
On our previous 3 albums, we did have parts of the albums which were more ethereal and uplifting also.
Interludes are something we also like to include as part of the listening journey.

Q7: “Sand” is my fave! I felt the influence of Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, and also more specifically Japanese Fusion like Casiopea. Do you listen to Japanese fusion music?

【MARK】: Sand has had some great feedback from listeners and reviews. A song John bought in also. It’s the first album that he has been on since joining the band around 9 years ago so great to have our music out which he is a part of. I am not familiar with Japanese Fusion music myself. I will be checking it out and listening now though, thanks for heads up.

Q8: While you were sleeping, there was a djent movement that originated from Meshuggah, right? How do you feel about their methods and techniques?

【MARK】: Meshuggah are pioneers, I was a big fan of Contradictions Collapse and Destroy Erase Improve when they came out.
John is a big fan of all their music.
I really like how they formed their own style and it’s awesome that they’ve influenced so many others to get more technical rhythms/pulses and forms into music. They are the kings of those methods and techniques.
As for the djent movement, it’s not something I listen to much though. There are some bands that I hear that I like some of their music, overall, it’s not a style of music that I connect to a lot or enjoy listening to often.

FIVE ALBUMS THAT CHANGED MARK’S LIFE

DEATH “SCREAM BLOODY GORE”

This release had me hooked on the band Death and love everything they did after this album also. I could not believe what I was hearing when Scream Bloody Gore first came out in 87.
I did a school music project on it where we had to review the music form and lyrics to a song, I picked Death – Regurgitated Guts.
Some fellow students in the class were not so impressed hahaha.

FORBIDDEN “TWISTED INTO FORM”

The musicianship and song writing blew me away, progressive/technical metal interest engaged.
In an interesting twist, our guitarist John grew up in USA and his band then Sinister Slam played shows with Forbidden back in the day.

ATHEIST “PIECE OF TIME”

When I first heard On They Slay on local radio it really blew me away.
Heavy, catchy, technical, and the bass was audible up in the mix.
We covered the song Piece of Time and in 2006 were very fortunate that Kelly Shaefer got up and sang it live with us in Florida while we were touring the USA with Necrophagist, Cattle Decapitation, Arsis & Neuraxis.
It was before the Atheist reformation shows and it was the first time Kelly had sung it live in 13 years. A very special moment for us also.

ACID BATH “WHEN THE KITE STRING POPS”

I am a big D.R.I fan and used to buy their t-shirts from the band through their mail order forms on the records in the late 80’s.
One day I received a postcard in the mail about a new band and album produced by D.R.I guitarist Spike. I ordered a copy without hearing it. So glad I did.
Mind blown.
Blending different styles with contrast, it opened the doors of exploration for me.

DAVE WECKL “MASTER PLAN”

First heard this when jamming with Matt and Scott in 1995.
This inspired me to listen to more than just metal and to explore more.
Alarum got to see Weckl play live in Melbourne and was an amazing show.
