NEW DISC REVIEW + INTERVIEW 【WILDERUN : EPIGONE】

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH EVAN BERRY OF WILDERUN !!

“Ideas Flow Through Us, We Can Only Try Our Best To Make Something New Out Of It, But Whatever It Is We Create Will Inevitably Be Shaped By a Myriad Of Things That Came Before Us.”

DISC REVIEW “EPIGONE”

「”Veil of Imagination”

WILDERUN “EPIGONE” : 10/10

INTERVIEW WITH EVAN BERRY

Q1: I was surprised to find out that your big love about Japanese music and anime. How did you get into it and what artists, anime and games do you love?

【EVAN】: My first exposure to Japanese music was, not surprisingly, through metal. I think I heard both Boris and Sigh back in high school, and I was really intrigued. I saw Boris twice over here in the states and really loved it. My girlfriend is more familiar than I am with the Japanese music scene, but she has turned me on to some great rock bands such as Tricot, Polysics and Mass of the Fermenting Dregs. I’ve come to appreciate some J-pop as well. I may be losing some serious metal cred here, but we saw Kyary Pamyu Pamyu in NYC in 2018, and it was actually amazing. As for anime, I am actually in the middle of watching “Serial Experiments Lain” right now, and it is super intriguing. Some other favorites are Psychopass, Trigun and Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. As for games, I am pretty mainstream having grown up on Nintendo and such. I recently played Silent Hill 2, 3 and 4 for the first time, and they were all incredible, especially their soundtracks. I really hope to make it to Japan soon! Also, being a huge roller coaster enthusiast, Fuji-Q Highland and Nagashima Spa Land are two bucket list parks for me.

Tricot, Polysics, Mass of the Fermenting Dregs

Q2: “Veil of Imagination” was very well received by fans and many media outlets! It was also voted the third best album of 2019 by our magazine. After the release of “Veil of Imagination”, you signed a contract with Century Media, and it was a life-changing album for you, wasn’t it?

【EVAN】: Wow, thank you! We’re honored to be ranked so highly by your magazine 🙂 Yes indeed, overall “Veil” was the most significant record in our career thus far. I suppose it just had a colorful and eccentric nature that grabbed more people than before, so I think our desire to get a bit weirder paid off! Also, and probably just as importantly, “Veil” was the first album where we invested some money into hiring a PR agency to help promote the album. Adrenaline PR did a great job getting our name out there more than we could do on our own, and I know it got the album in the hands of a few people that have helped our career. In retrospect, I wish we had done this with our first two albums (or at the very least “Sleep at the Edge of the Earth”), but hindsight is always 20/20.

Q3: A lot of people started to treat Wilderun as the flag bearer or hope of progressive metal. How do you feel about those expectations?

【EVAN】: To be honest, I try to not think about those things all too often, haha! As flattered as I am by that sentiment, and as much as I appreciate the love from those fans, I know that if I focused too much on audience expectation, it would create a lot of pressure and would most likely stifle a lot of my creativity. I’ve actually had moments where I’ve been overwhelmed by thoughts like that, and I’ve had to dig myself out of self-critical holes. (Some of the lyrics on “Epigone” actually deal with some of these issues). The best thing for me to do is just continue trying to make music I personally love, and hope other people like it. That’s the only thing that’s worked for me thus far, and it’s the only thing that can get me in a state of uncorrupted creativity, and stay in the zone during those moments, which are actually a lot more fleeting and rare than most people would probably assume.

Q4: But by the time “Epigone” was completed, there were pandemics, presidential elections, and BLM, and the division of the world became more apparent, right? Did those situations influence the new record?

【EVAN】: I think the biggest effect it had on us was that it robbed us of the opportunity to truly celebrate “Veil of Imagination”. I’ve come to realize over the years that there is a sort of Ying/Yang between recording an album and playing shows. They are very different, but they compliment each other. You put your heart and soul into the music while writing and recording, which is why it is ultimately the most satisfying part of the process, but then you use touring and shows to celebrate the achievement of the final product. Unfortunately, because of the pandemic, we only got a grand total of 8 shows in support of “Veil”. It was difficult to get working on a new record so soon, and there were a few months where I know I hesitated. Even though we ultimately decided making a new album would be the best use of our time, I do think that frustration and sorrow made its way on “Epigone”, even if it’s in a subconscious way.

Q5: “Epigone” refers to artists who create unoriginal works by appropriating or imitating the styles of their predecessors, who are considered to be superior, right? Why did you choose this title for your latest work?

【EVAN】: All my lyrics come from a personal place, and I think the frustration of our career being put on hold really shined a light on my feelings of failure. These sorts of thoughts can really spiral, especially when you’re in isolation, so I think I just had a lot of time to muse on my own feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy. It also made me start to rethink a lot of how I defined myself as a human being, and how much I can connect my self-worth with my career and achievements, and what a trap that way of thinking can become. It’s very easy to lose sight of the truly transcendent nature of music and art once you become too directly tied to it, and your identity becomes too wrapped up in it, so a lot of this album seeks to break that connection.

Q6: However, I believe that there is no such thing as an artist who creates something from nothing, and that everyone combines several influences and creates something new from them. There will be times when the pain of childbirth makes it easy to imitate. But, whether we add our own personality and identity to it or not, the result will be very different, would you agree?

【EVAN】: Yeah absolutely. We are all the result of a giant mix of things we didn’t decide and could’ve never chosen for ourselves. We don’t even truly choose what we like, we are simply drawn to whatever it is that grabs our attention. Not to get too deep into a discussion about free will, but especially when concerning art and creativity, it is hard to see where the free will is in that. Ideas flow through us, we can only try our best to make something new out of it, but whatever it is we create will inevitably be shaped by a myriad of things that came before us. These are certainly the types of things I try to remind myself of when I’m feeling inadequate or unoriginal.

Q7: But “Epigone” is still overwhelming! I was impressed by “Veil of imagination”, but this album takes metal to the stage of a classic movie or a Shakespearean opera. The art is the opposite of “Epigone”, isn’t it? Compared to “Veil of Imagination”, it’s more mellow and delicate, with fewer heavy parts, which creates a wonderful contrasting magic, doesn’t it?

【EVAN】: Thank you! Yeah, there are definitely even more quiet parts on this album. I know some of our more ‘metal’ fans may not be as stoked on that aspect, but in a lot of ways I have a hard time even calling Wilderun a metal band. We certainly love metal, and it is an important part of all of us, but in regards to creating music, I’ve always thought of metal more as a tool than as a foundation. It is a wonderful thing to utilize to help create drama and dynamics, and if you want your music to reach some soaring heights and intensity, it doesn’t get much better than metal in terms of sonics and aesthetics. But yeah, the songs on “Epigone” just happen to have fewer of those this time around. It wasn’t really by choice, the songs just naturally seemed to turn out that way. But I like to think the heavy parts still contribute a lot when they do enter.

Q8: It seems that Joe Gettler has left the band and Wayne Ingram, who is in charge of keyboards and orchestration, is back on lead guitar as well. But Joe is still playing on this album, isn’t he? But now that I know Wayne worked with Hans Zimmer, I understand why his orchestration is so great, haha!

【EVAN】: Yeah, it’s been a bit confusing for some, especially considering Wayne is playing guitar in the music videos, but Joe did indeed record all the lead guitars on “Epigone”. It was basically the last thing he did with the band before deciding to leave. We were sad to see him go, but he needed to focus on his career as a tattoo artist (he’s an amazing visual artist, by the way), and since we are all good friends, we completely understood and wish him well. Luckily Wayne was in a place in his life where he could take up the mantle of lead guitarist once again, so it worked out nicely. And yes, Wayne certainly worked on his orchestrating chops a lot during his time with Hans Zimmer, which has been very beneficial for us! I think I can easily say his work on “Epigone” is his best so far.

Q9: And the most wonderful thing is your vocals. You’ve become one of the leading vocalists in the metal world! You are able to manipulate emotions in a transformative way, from ferocious growls to Beatles-like singing. The “Destruction” suite at the end is especially incredible, and the unexpectedness of bringing chaos at the end is really so you, would you agree?

【EVAN】: Thank you so much, that really means a lot! I do feel more confident in my vocals now than I used to, so it is great to hear that it comes across on the album. And yeah, we were really happy with how that ending turned out. The chords and melody I had written for that part were already on the darker/brooding side, but since it’s the end of the album, we wanted to turn up the chaos a notch, so we implemented a lot of noise and synth work into it, to really try to create a hellish maelstrom. We don’t get many opportunities to get That dark, so it was a lot of fun. As I mentioned before, even though there are a lot of delicate, pretty parts on this album, I still feel like there is an undertone that is unsettling. Sort of like a watcher in the dark that doesn’t let itself be known very often, but you can feel its presence. So the ending fully leans into that side of things, for a brief moment.
