“We Do Think Of War As Part Of Human History And Mainly a Great Way To Learn That Violence Is Never The Answer To Resolving Any Conflict. There’s Nothing Positive In Death Of Innocents That Benefits Humanity At Large.”

DISC REVIEW “HEIR OF THE RISING SUN”

「”Kasifi’s Verses”
Beneath the Nightfall” や “Where the River Bends” におけるブラックメタルの激しい旋律、荘厳に勝利を響かせる “Nova Roma”。

AETERNAM “HEIR OF THE RISING SUN” : 9.9/10

INTERVIEW WITH AETERNAM

Q1: First of all, what kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?

【ACHRAF】: I was introduced to Rock music by my brother who came back from the army and brought me some Metallica, Paradise Lost and Nirvana cassets. I really liked early Metallica material, so that paved the way for me to discover more about that Era of music. Then I discovered many Metal bands from the San Fransisco Bay area and learned guitar by playing their songs. I got into the darker side of Metal a bit later and was fascinated by bands like Mayhem, Marduk, Behemoth etc.

Q2: Aeternam is Latin for eternity, why did you choose this word as the name of your band?

【ANTOINE】: We certainly knew what it meant when we chose it, but at that time we were still looking for our sound and identity, and I will confess that we took it mostly because it sounded and looked cool. In retrospect, we are perfectly fine with it, I think it sits well within our lyrical thematics.

Q3: You guys play very unique, oriental metal, does that have something to do with the fact that vocalist Achraf Loudiy is from Morocco?

【ANTOINE】: Definitely. When Achraf and I met, he had this idea to incorporate more oriental melodies to our songs. He grew up listening to these kind of melodies in his home country, and I also know his mother is a great singer, it runs in the family. As for myself, I’ve always been interested in world music, and I absolutely loved digging into it.

Q4: Importantly, you guys are very aggressive compared to the big names in oriental metal, Orphaned Land and Myrath. Is that something you are particularly conscious of and trying to make a difference with them?

【ACHRAF】: Aeternam has been following its own path since day one. As much as we like Orphaned Land and Myrath, we craft our sound based on our own intuition and concepts. We clearly are a more aggressive band, but it’s not done consciously with the intention to be “different”..

Q5: Still, “Heir of the Rising Sun” is an incredible album, conceptually and musically! Why did you choose the theme of the battle between the Ottoman and Byzantine empires for this album?

【ANTOINE】: In the past we had focused more on mythological and religious topics, always a little bit out of the real world. This time, we wanted to take on a more historical topic, and try to tell the tale our way. If you read the lyrics, you’ll notice thay they aren’t a history lesson, they are still poetic and sometimes more evocative of the subject rather than a first degree accounts of the events. Why Byzantium? It’s a question of timing. I had been reading and watching a lot of medieval history lately, and I realized that here in Canada, this portion of the Middle Ages is often disregarded. We thought it would be an interesting subject to tackle, with great potential in term of both lyrical and musical content.

Q6: The sadness and conflict of the Byzantine soldiers depicted in “The Fall of Constantinople” is an undeniable reminder of what is happening in Ukraine today. Did you think about the Russian invasion when you were writing this piece? And how do you feel about war in general?

【ACHRAF】: Actually, that song was written a long time before the war in Ukraine started. That said, we do think of war as part of human history and mainly a great way to learn that violence is never the answer to resolving any conflict. There’s nothing positive in death of innocents that benefits humanity at large.

Q6: “The Fall of Constantinople”

Q7: I think it is also unprecedented to have a metal album in four different languages. Why did you take on this challenge?

【ANTOINE】: There’s actually five if you count the small narration in Turkish at the start of Kasifi’s Verses. I think you can see that as an hommage to the language of the people we speak of in the song. Let’s take Where the River Bends for instance. There are a bunch of lyrics in Norwegian, which is a language nobody in the band speaks. A fun little trivia about it is that I met some Norwegian guys at a restaurant in Italy last winter, and one of them was kind enough to help me with the pronounciation of some words. I recorded him saying the lyrics slowly with my phone so we had a template when we recorded the real ones. We did the same thing with the greek lyrics: a native greek guy living in Quebec was kind enough to record the same kind of guide tracks. Even though we don’t speak some of the languages we sing, we try to put ourselves in a situation where at least we made the effort to try to pronounce it as best as we can.

【ANTOINE】: “Kasifi’s Verses”
たとえば、”Where the River Bends” を見てみようか。

Q8: What is very interesting is that you guys seem to be using Oriental and Middle Eastern music as a symbol of the Ottoman Empire and Gregorian chant and choir as a symbol of the Byzantine Empire. In a way, the album is a war, but also a fusion of East and West, isn’t it?

【ANTOINE】: Yes that seems logical. Although real byzantine music wasn’t that far from what we call “eastern music” but for the sake of musical palette, we definitely gave the character of Byzanitum in the album a more “Western” feel, if that makes sense. It was a good challenge to try to incorporate both in the same song. Beneath the Nightfall and Irene are good examples of that.
