日本ほど ELEGY を愛し、ELEGY に愛された国は他にありません。おそらく、この国のリスナーは世界のどの国よりもメタルに知を求め、美を求めていました。だからこそ、早すぎたオランダの至宝に恋焦がれ、挽歌が眠りについた際にはいつまでも、いつまでもその目覚めを待ち続けていたのです。今でこそ、当たり前になったファンタジーとテクニカルの饗宴、”プログ・パワー” ですが、明らかに ELEGY はその源流です。そうして、DREAM THEATER よりもファンタジックで、HELLOWEEN よりもテクニカルかつ知的な失われし夢の迷宮がついに長き眠りから覚める時が訪れました。

ELEGY と聞いて、あなたは何を思い浮かべるでしょうか？明らかに、前ボーカリスト Eduard Hovinga の月まで突き抜けるような甲高いハイトーンとドラマティックなメロディは、初期 ELEGY の象徴でした。そしてもちろん、Henk van der Laars と Arno van Brussel / Gilbert Pot が織りなすあまりに劇的なギター・ハーモニーの疾駆は、ELEGY の代名詞と言えるでしょう。
その美しき両翼が完全に噛み合った “Lost” において、私たちはメタル・カタルシスの最高到達点を経験しました。逆に言えば、”Spanish Inquisition” の身を捩るような音スタシーを知ってしまった我々は、生半可なプログ・パワーでは満足しない体に調教されてしまったのです。いやー、”Supremacy” も良いんですよね…”Lust For Life” みたいな壮大荘厳なバラードを書けるバンドが他にどれほどいることか。
そうした絶頂期に、なぜかギター・スイープのテクニックまでずば抜けていた Eduard がバンドを去り、VENGENCE, Misha Calvin, そして TAMAS などで活躍した “Zero” の申し子ともいえる Ian Parry が ELEGY に加入します。Ian は Eduard のような天空のシンガーではありませんが、例えば Ronni James Dio のような力強く、エモーショナルな歌唱を得意としていました。だからこそ、少しスピードを抑えて、内省的で狂おしいほどにエモーショナルな “State of Mind” には適任でした。
嘘のような話ですが、当時の中高生は皆、カラオケで名曲 “Shadow Dancer” を歌いながら踊り狂ったものでした。それほど、あの頃の ELEGY は人気があったのです。本当です。Ian Parry はあの年、BURRN! 誌のベスト・シンガーに選ばれたんじゃなかったかな…とにかく、だからこそ、突然の Henk の脱退は青天の霹靂、あまりにも衝撃的で絶望的なニュースだったのです。
「ELEGY は2000年から、Jean Michel Jarre/Consortium Project の Patrik Rondat と2枚のアルバム “Forbidden Fruit”, “Principle of Pain” をレコーディングしていた。しかし、ファンが Henk を欲していることは明らかで、Patrik がやめると決めた時、Martin と私はバンドを繭の中に入れて、いつか Henk が戻ってくることを願うことにしたんだよ。その日がついに訪れたんだ！」
バンドは名手 Patrik Rondat を勧誘し活動を続けますが、非常にユニークなソングライターと、本当にユニークなサウンドを持つギタリストという二足の草鞋を履いていた天才の抜けた穴を埋めることは難しく、ELEGY は長い眠りにつくことになりました。たしかに Patrik はクラシック・ギターも縦横無尽に使いこなすフランスでも屈指のプレイヤーでしたが、ヴァイオリンから始まっている Henk が司るキーボードまで含めたゴージャス&カルフルなオーケストレーションの色彩こそ、ELEGY の真骨頂だったのかもしれませんね。
結局、ファンだけでなく、Ian も Martin も Dirk も Henk van dar Laars という偉人の帰りを待っていたのです。”Lost” のアートワークに描かれた月のように、時は満ちました。全作の再発、日本も含む？！リユニオン・ツアー、そしてその道の先には、私たちが焦がれ続けた新作が待っているようです。
今回弊誌では、Ian Parry にインタビューを行うことができました。「素晴らしい未来への希望を歌うことだよ。メディアでよく見聞きするような怖い話ではなく、もっとおとぎ話を書きたいんだ。魔法にかかったようなファンタジーの世界をね。そうだね、それで、1997年の “State of Mind” の時のように、ファンの皆に再び幸せな気持ちになってもらえたらうれしいね」 弊誌独占世界初インタビュー。どうぞ！！
INTERVIEW WITH IAN PARRY
Q1: First of all, how did this reunion of ELEGY begin?
【IAN】: Well basically an Italian label approached Martin Helmantel & I about re-releasing Elegy’s album’s (Primal Instinct; State of Mind; Manifestation of Fear; Forbidden Fruit & Principles of Pain) on Vinyl. This sparked the idea even more for a possible Elegy reunion. Around the same time Henk van der Laars contacted Martin out of the blue and after chatting the whole evening Henk said he thought the time was right to put the band back together again for a Reunion Tour later in 2023 to help promote the vinyl releases.
Q1: まずは、今回のリユニオンがどうやって始まったのか、教えていただけますか？
【IAN】: 基本的にイタリアのレーベルが Martin Helmantelと私に、ELEGY のアルバム（”Primal Instinct”, “State of Mind”, “Manifestation of Fear”, “Forbidden Fruit”, “Principles of Pain”）をレコードで再発することを持ちかけてきたのが始まりだ。このことが、ELEGY 再結成の可能性にさらに火をつけることになったからね。
同じ頃、Henk van der Laars が突然 Martin に連絡し、一晩中話した後、Henk は2023年後半に再結成ツアーを行い、ヴァイナル・リリースを促進するためにバンドを再び結成する時期が来たと思ったと私たちに伝えたんだ。
Q2: What surprised me was the return of Henk van der Laars. I thought he had already distanced himself from the music industry. How did you motivate him to do it again?
【IAN】: Back in the day Henk’s Mum sadly passed away, which as you can imagine was devastating for him. He was also raising two children, so he decided to back away from music for the sake of his family. Elegy always kept in regular contact with Henk especially Martin who lives close by in Eindhoven. We were always waiting until the right time came along, which it did with the positive motivation for Henk when he saw how fantastic the new 12 inch vinyl from “Lost” looked like with a new enhanced front sleeve vinyl. This plus the vinyl re-releases of the complete back catalogue of albums, gave Henk the inspiration to pick up his guitar again and contact Martin to meet up with the band to discuss reforming Elegy.
Q2: それにしても、Henk が復帰するとは驚きですよ！彼は音楽業界から距離を置いたと思っていましたからね。
【IAN】: あの頃、Henk の母親が悲しいことに他界してしまい、想像できるように、それは彼にとって本当にものすごい打撃となってしまったんだ。彼は2人の子供を育てていたから、家族のために音楽から手を引くことにしたんだよ。
でも ELEGY は、Henk と常に連絡を取り合っていたんだ。特にアイントホーフェンの近くに住む Martin はね。そして、私たちはいつも適切な時期が来るまで待っていたんだ。適切な時期、それは “Lost” の新しい12インチ盤が、新しく強化されたフロント・スリーブ・ヴァイナルで実に素晴らしい出来だったから、Henk にポジティブなモチベーションを与えた時だったんだ。
これに加えて、バック・カタログの全アルバムが再リリースされることで、Henk は再びギターを手に取り、ELEGY 再結成についてバンドと会って話し合うために Martin に連絡する気になったんだ。
Q3: I was also surprised by Gilbert Pot’s participation. I thought you and he were not active at the same time. But why did he decide to join?
【IAN】: I had never worked with Gilbert Pot before, so this is a first for me. Having met Gilbert on many occasions he comes across as being a really nice person. Honest and positive and most important of all his guitar playing is just as impressive as Henk. Both Henk and Gilbert love playing guitar together and when you hear the combination of 2 very talented guitarists you understand immediately why we wanted this to be the line-up for the Reunion shows.
Q3: かつての名手、Gilbert Pot の参加も驚きでした。
【IAN】: 私自身は Gilbert と仕事をしたことがなかったから、今回が初めてだね。でも彼とは何度も会っていて、本当にいい人だと思う。誠実で前向き、そして何より彼のギター・プレイが Henk と同じくらい印象的なんだ。
Henk も Gilbert もこのコンビで一緒にギターを弾くのが大好きだからね。2人の才能あるギタリストのコンビネーションを聴けば、なぜ再結成公演のラインアップをこのメンバーにしようと思ったのかすぐにわかると思うよ。
Q4: Frankly speaking, Elegy’s inactivity for more than 20 years was a great loss to the metal world. Why have you been inactive for so long?
【IAN】: Honestly because of what happened to Henk. Elegy did carry on from 2000 recording 2 more albums “Forbidden Fruit & Principle of Pain” with Patrick Rondat (Jean Michel Jarre/Consortium Project). However it was clear the fans simply wanted Henk and when Patrick decided to stop Martin & I decided to put the band in moth balls and hope one day that Henk would return. That day has finally arrived!
Q4: 率直に言って、ELEGY が20年も活動をしていなかったのは、メタル世界にとって大きな損失だと思いますよ。
【IAN】: うん、正直なところ、それは Henk に起こったことが原因だった。ELEGY は2000年から、Jean Michel Jarre/Consortium Project の Patrik Rondat と2枚のアルバム “Forbidden Fruit”, “Principle of Pain” をレコーディングしていた。
しかし、ファンが Henk を欲していることは明らかで、Patrik がやめると決めた時、Martin と私はバンドを繭の中に入れて、いつか Henk が戻ってくることを願うことにしたんだよ。その日がついに訪れたんだ！
Q5: It’s commonplace now, but in that era, no other band combined progressive metal and power metal so skilfully… It was more power metal than Dream Theater or Symphony X, but very intelligent metal. How did you come up with that style?
【IAN】: Well the credit has to go to Henk. He was writing these songs years before the prog scene with some of the great bands like Dreamtheatre etc even existed. So you could say Henk was ahead of his time with his unique song writing style and phenomenal technique on guitar. This I am sure is why ESP guitars in Japan built a signature series guitar in Henk’s honour called Henk van der Laars “Spirits”, which is one of the best songs Henk wrote and your readers can hear this on the “Lost” album.
Q5: 今では当たり前ですが、当時プログ・メタルとパワー・メタルをあれほど巧みに融合していたバンドは他にいませんでした。DREAM THEATER や SYMPHONY X よりももっとファンタジックで…でも非常に知的なんですよね。
【IAN】: やはり Henk の功績は大きいよ。彼は、DREAM THEATER などの偉大なバンドが存在するプログ・シーンよりも何年も前に、これらの曲を書いていたんだからね。だから、Henk はそのユニークな曲作りのスタイルとギターの驚異的なテクニックで、時代の先端を走っていたと言える。
だからこそ、日本のESPギターは Henk に敬意を表して、Henk van der Laars “Spirits” というシグネチャー・シリーズのギターを製作したのだろうね。”Spirits” は、Henk が書いた曲の中でも最高のもので、読者の皆さんはこれをアルバム “Lost” で聴くことができるよ。
Q6: You joined the band in 1996 with “Primal Instinct”. Your style was different from that of your predecessor, Eduard Hovinga, but you managed to make “State of Mind” a success in your own way, would you agree?
【IAN】: Yes absolutely. I still love Eduard’s voice to this day. Singing “Spirits” was a challenge, but I love this song and Eduard’s vocal melodies and many songs he recorded with Elegy. Eduard is also a really nice person. We recently met him while Martin and I were playing on tour with Headless as the official European support act for Geoff Tate. “State of Mind” worked so well as an album because of the combination of Henk’s original song writing style and my own songs I contributed to the album. The important essence has to be the melodic melody lines surrounded by complex, but catchy guitar themes enhanced by orchestral strings performed by Henk. This combination plus the light hearted stories in the lyrics is what made “State of Mind” a huge success. I believe the pre-sales (before the release in Japan were 14,000 and after we played live in Osaka and Tokyo, we ended up selling in excess of 27,000. The same happened in Europe, Brazil and the USA. So the fans clearly loved the strong melodic elements wrapped inside a prog symphonic rock metal atmosphere.
Q6: あなたは 1996年の “Primal Instinct” からバンドに加わりました。前任者の Eduard Hovinga とはまた異なるスタイルでしたが、見事に “State of Mind” を成功に導きましたね？
【IAN】: そうだね、間違いなくスタイルは異なるね。私は今でも Eduard Hovinga の声が大好きなんだ。”Spirits” を歌うのは大変だったけど、この曲と Eduard のボーカルのメロディ、そして彼が ELEGY で録音した多くの曲が大好きなんだ。
それに、Eduard は本当にいい人なんだよね。最近、Martin と私が Geoff Tate のヨーロッパ・ツアーのサポートアクトとして HEADLESS で演奏しているときに彼に会ったんだ。
“State of Mind” がアルバムとしてとてもうまくいったのは、Henk のオリジナルな曲作りのスタイルと、私が提供した自分の曲の組み合わせのおかげだと思う。重要なエッセンスは、複雑でありながらキャッチーなギターのテーマに囲まれたメロディ・ラインと、Henk が演奏するオーケストラの弦楽器によって引き立てられていることだ。この組み合わせと、歌詞の中の軽快なストーリーが、”State of Mind” を大成功させたんだ。
日本での発売前のプレセールスは14,000枚だったと思うけど、大阪と東京でライブを行った結果、27,000枚を超えるセールスを達成したよ。ヨーロッパ、ブラジル、アメリカでも同じことが起こった。つまり、プログ、シンフォニック、ロック、メタルの雰囲気の中に包まれた強いメロディックな要素が、明らかにファンから支持されたわけさ。
Q7: The dark 2020s began with wars, pandemics, and the rise of the far right. What can Elegy’s music bring to these times?
【IAN】: To sing of hope for a great future. I’d like to write more fairy tales instead of scary tales, which is what we hear and see a lot in the media. A kind of fantasy world full of magic. Yes that would be nice to make our fans feel happy again like with did back in 1997 with “State of mind”.
Q7: 戦争やパンデミックで始まったこの暗い2020年代に、ELEGY の音楽は何を持ち込めるでしょう？
【IAN】: 素晴らしい未来への希望を歌うことだよ。メディアでよく見聞きするような怖い話ではなく、もっとおとぎ話を書きたいんだ。魔法にかかったようなファンタジーの世界をね。そうだね、それで、1997年の “State of Mind” の時のように、ファンの皆に再び幸せな気持ちになってもらえたらうれしいね。
Q8: Naturally, many fans are looking forward to Elegy’s new album. Is there any chance of that happening?
【IAN】: I am sure Elegy when we are ready, will deliver an album which our fans will want to hear. First we want to plan carefully the reunion live shows and help promote the 12 inch vinyl releases. Afterwards with a box filled with magic after a great reunion tour, we will open up many surprises in a new cd album.
Q8: 再結成ツアーの後、ファンが望むのは当然、新しい ELEGY のアルバムです。
【IAN】: ELEGY として、私たちの準備が整えば、ファンが聴きたくなるようなアルバムができると確信しているよ。まずは再結成ライブを慎重に計画し、12インチレコードのリリースを促進する手助けをしたい。その後、素晴らしい再結成ツアーの後、魔法で満たされた箱という、新しいCDアルバムで多くの驚きを開こうと思っているよ。
