DISC REVIEW “THE DRAKKETH SAGA”
「僕たちは、自分たちが影響を受けたものをしっかりとその名に刻んでいるんだよ。DRAGONFORCE をはじめとしたパワーメタルからの多大な影響。そして WHITECHAPEL や CANNIBAL CORPSE をはじめとするデスメタルやデスコアからの影響。だから、両方の名前を統合するべきだと思ったんだ」
DRAGONFORCE の名を挙げるまでもなく、天翔るドラゴンはファンタジックなパワー・メタルの代名詞であり象徴です。一方で、”Corpse” “死体” は、CANNIBAL CORPSE を引き合いに出すまでもなく、デスメタルの根幹であり原点。その２つの単語を安直なまでに大胆に繋ぎ合わせたオーストラリアの新鋭 DRAGONCORPSE の登場は、A7X が語るようにヘヴィ・メタルが “大胆な” 進化を厭わなくなる予兆なのかもしれません。
「パワー・メタルとデスコア。この一見相容れない2つのジャンルを融合させたきっかけは、僕と BEYOND DEVIATION の Kris Chayer との単純なやり取りから生まれたんだ。そこで僕らは、ヘヴィな音楽全般においてクリーン・ボーカルが十分に活用されていない、そして馬鹿にされていることは、あらゆる可能性を失っていることになると話したんだよ」
そもそも、ヘヴィ・メタルの世界はクリーン・ボーカルが花形で主流でした。しかし、スラッシュ、デスメタル、メタルコアと時を重ねるうちに、重さこそ正義、グロウルやスクリームであらずんばメタルにあらずといった空気が醸し出されてきたような気もします。そんな中で、DRAGONCORPSE はメタルにおけるクリーン・ボーカルの重要性に再度焦点を当て、デスコアの現代的な重力の中にパワー・メタルのファンタジーを組み込む事でメタルの新たな可能性を見出して見せました。
「どのようなスタイルの音楽にも、おそらく永遠に “純粋な人” たち、ピュアリストはいるものだろう。僕たちが取り込みたいのは、ヘヴィな音楽もファンタジックな音楽も両方楽しめる、オープンマインドな人たちだよ。僕たちのようなバンドが現れて、実際に活動するのを長い間待っていたと言ってくれる人がたくさんいることは、正しい道を歩んでいることを意味しているんだ」
と言うよりも、そもそもパワー・メタルとデスコアは、それほど遠い場所にいたのでしょうか？ 例えば、BLIND GUARDIAN の “I’m Alive” や “Mirror Mirror”、もしくは HELLOWEEN の ”Escaltion 666″ や ”Push” を聴けば、その実、パワー・メタルにも重さを許容する素養が十分にあったことに気づくはずです。DRAGONCORPSE はただし、その陳腐になりがちなジャンルの手術を、スタイルの良いところを合成し、それぞれの脂肪をカットすることで、両者の総和を超越するカタルシスを作り出すことに成功したのです。
そして、彼らのサウンドの中心、パワーとデスコアが重なる部分は、SOILWORK や SCAR SYMMETRY を想起させるスウェーデンの基盤が実は支えています。このコアから音楽の要求に応じて、壮大なパワーメタルのコーラスや、デスコアのブレイクダウンへと、より柔軟に、大胆に、シームレスに楽曲はその枝葉を巡らせていきます。
もちろん、デスコアとパワー・メタルという、おそらくサウンド的にも審美的にも最も異なると思われてきた2つのサブジャンルを組み合わせることで、DRAGONCORPSE はデスコアのファンがパワー・メタルの世界を探求するための、パワー・メタルのファンがデスコアの世界を探求するための橋渡しを行い、この壮大な “The Drakketh Saga” の最大の功績としたことは記しておくべきでしょう。
今回弊誌では、多才なボーカリスト Mardy Leith にインタビューを行うことができました。「J-ロックやJ-メタルにとても影響を受けているし、日本の影響も浸透している。X-Japan, D’espairsRay, The GazettE, Maximum the Hormone のようなバンドからの影響だね。高校時代は D’espairsRay の大ファンだったよ！僕の記憶が正しければ、彼らは実際に Soundwave フェスティバルの1つでオーストラリアに来たことがあるんだ！それからもちろん、DEVILOOF のようなヘヴィなものも大好きさ！」オーストラリア、アメリカ、カナダの混成バンド。どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH MARDY LEITH
Q1: First of all, what kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?
【MARDY】: I personally grew up listening to a lot of classic rock/metal, bands such as Europe, Journey, Judas Priest, which then evolved into heavier music, like Nevermore, Symphony X, DIR EN GREY, all of which influenced my vocals fairly heavily. All members have at some point been interested in some form of Power/heavy Metal, then venturing into heavier styles such as Death Metal/Deathcore and standard Metalcore.
Q1: 本誌初登場です！まずは、あなたの音楽的なバックグラウンドからお話ししていただけますか？
【MARDY】: 僕自身は、EUROPE, JOURNEY, JUDAS PRIEST といったクラシック・ロック/メタルバンドを聴いて育ち、その後、NEVERMORE, SYMPHONY X, Dir en Grey のようなヘヴィ・ミュージックへと進んでいったんだ。こうした音楽すべてが、僕のボーカルに大きな影響を与えているよ。
メンバー全員がどこかの時点でパワー・メタルやヘヴィ・メタルに興味を持ち、そこからデスメタルやデスコア、メタルコアなど、よりヘヴィなスタイルに踏み込んできたんだよ。
Q2: Dragon is synonymous with fantastic metal like Dragonforce, while Corpse is synonymous with death metal like Cannibal Corpse. Why did you choose to combine these two words in your name?
【MARDY】: What we wanted to achieve was for any new listeners to know what to expect as soon as they saw our name.
We wear our influences on our sleeve, with Dragonforce being a huge Power Metal influence, and then bands like Whitechapel, Cannibal Corpse being the Death Metal/Deathcore influence. So we figured we should just merge both names haha.
Q2: “Dragon” は DRAGONFORCE のようなファンタジックなメタルの代名詞であり、”Corpse” は CANNIBAL CORPSE のようなデスメタルの代名詞だと言えます。なぜ、この2つの単語を組み合わせてバンド名にしたのですか？
【MARDY】: 僕たちは、新しいリスナーが僕たちの名前を見た瞬間に、何を期待すればいいのかがわかるようにしたかったんだ。そうして、僕たちは、自分たちが影響を受けたものをしっかりとその名に刻んでいるんだよ。
DRAGONFORCE をはじめとしたパワーメタルからの多大な影響。そして WHITECHAPEL や CANNIBAL CORPSE をはじめとするデスメタルやデスコアからの影響。だから、両方の名前を統合するべきだと思ったんだ。
Q3: Still, what other band combines power metal and deathcore? Why did you decide to combine these two genres?
【MARDY】: As far as we know, there is no other band doing what we do.
Sold Soul had some Power Metal influences on their last album, but we still feel we stand apart from the crowd in how we seamlessly merge the genres.
Bands that are similar to us however would be Killwhitneydead, Into Eternity, Mercenary, and even Scar Symmetry to an extent.
The main reason for merging these 2 seemingly incompatible genres was from a simple interaction between myself and Kris Chayer of Beyond Deviation, where we expressed that clean vocals being underutilised (and even ridiculed) in heavier music in general was missing out on a whole world of possibilities.
So we sought out to make a band that would incorporate every style, no barriers required.
Q3: なぜ、パワー・メタルとデスコアという大きく異なるジャンルを融合させようと思ったのですか？
【MARDY】: 僕らが知る限り、僕らがやっているようなことをやっているバンドは他にいない。
SOLD SOUL は前作でパワー・メタルの影響を受けていたけど、ジャンルをシームレスに融合させている点で、僕たちは群を抜いていると感じているよ。まあでも、KILLWHITNEYDEAD, INTO ETERNITY, MERCENARY, そして SCAR SYMMETRY もある程度は似ているんじゃないかな。
この一見相容れない2つのジャンルを融合させたきっかけは、僕と BEYOND DEVIATION の Kris Chayer との単純なやり取りから生まれたんだ。そこで僕らは、ヘヴィな音楽全般においてクリーン・ボーカルが十分に活用されていない、そして馬鹿にされていることは、あらゆる可能性を失っていることになると話したんだよ。
そこで僕たちは、あらゆるスタイルを取り入れることができる、垣根のないバンドを作ろうと考えたんだ。
Q4: The important thing is that you are not making music by dividing it into power metal is here and deathcore is there but rather the two naturally mingle to form a new genre, would you agree?
【MARDY】: 100% Agree! We don’t want songs that whiplash our listeners between the genres.
Having our songs seamlessly merge the genres we incorporate is our top priority, that is the DRAGONCORPSE sound.
Q4: 重要なのは、あなたたちが自然にシームレスに、その２つのジャンルを融合させ新たなジャンルを生み出している点でしょう。ここはパワー・メタル、ここはデスコアといった感じではありませんね。
【MARDY】: 100％同意するよ。僕たちは、リスナーをジャンルの狭間で混乱させるような曲は望んでいないからね。
取り入れたジャンルをシームレスに融合させることが僕たちの最優先事項であり、それこそが DRAGONCORPSE サウンドだと言えるね。
Q5: However, fans of power metal may not like guttural vocals, and conversely, fans of deathcore may not like clean, operatic singing. What do you think about such “Gate-keeper” type fans?
【MARDY】: Every style of music will have purists, probably forever. The demographic that we want to capture are those that are open-minded while still appreciating both heavier and more fantastical music.
The amount of people that have told us that they have been waiting for so long for a band like us to actually do what we do just means we are on the right path.
Q5: ただ、ガテラルが嫌いなパワー・メタル・ファンや、クリーン・ボーカルが苦手なデスコア・ファンといった、ジャンルの “ゲート・キーパー” たちには理解されない部分もあるかもしれませんね？
【MARDY】: どのようなスタイルの音楽にも、おそらく永遠に “純粋な人” たち、ピュアリストはいるものだろう。僕たちが取り込みたいのは、ヘヴィな音楽もファンタジックな音楽も両方楽しめる、オープンマインドな人たちだよ。
僕たちのようなバンドが現れて、実際に活動するのを長い間待っていたと言ってくれる人がたくさんいることは、正しい道を歩んでいることを意味しているんだ。
Q6: So, for example, fantastic stories are the heart of power metal, as in Blind Guardian, What kind of stories and fantasies does The Drakketh Saga have?
【MARDY】: The Drakketh Saga is in and of itself a concept album, an overarching story.
I plan on writing a book (and even potentially a Dungeon and Dragons campaign haha) to properly explain everything that occurs in it, and also the subsequent EPs/Albums that occur.
In a nutshell, The Drakketh Saga tells the story of a celestial deity that takes the form of a dragon (Drakketh) who then wages war on both the Sun and the Moon due to their overbearing dominion over the earth.
However, they are slain by the various races of the earth, but not without the sheer willpower of Drakketh’s hate maintaining a tangible tie with the earth, allowing them to poison the minds of those that have been in contact with Drakketh’s blood.
This leads to multiple characters in the story starting efforts to resurrect Drakketh, the DRAGONCORPSE.
Q6: 例えば BLIND GUARDIAN のように、ファンタジックな物語はパワー・メタルの心臓だと言えますよね？ “The Drakketh Saga” では、どういったストーリーが語られているのでしょう？
【MARDY】: “The Drakketh Saga” は、それ自体がコンセプト・アルバムであり、包括的な物語なんだ。
このアルバムで起こること、そしてその後のEP/アルバムで起こることのすべてをきちんと説明するために、僕は本（D&D のキャンペーンもあり得るような）を書くつもりだよ。
ドラクエスサーガは、一言で言えば、ドラゴンの姿をした天神（ドラクエス）が、地球を支配しすぎた太陽と月に戦争を仕掛けるという物語。
ドラクエスたちは地球の様々な種族によって殺されていく。だけど、ドラクエスの憎しみが地球との具体的な結びつきを維持することで、ドラクエスの血に触れた者の心を毒することができるため、彼らの意志の強さを無視することはできないんだ。
そのため、物語の中で複数の人物がドラゴンコープス (ドラゴンゾンビ) となったドラクエスを復活させるための活動を開始することになっていくよ。
Q7: Speaking of fantasy, there are many anime, manga, and video game fantasy worlds in Japan, including Final Fantasy. Are there any influences from Japan?
【MARDY】: Most definitely, pretty much every member of DRAGONCORPSE has an interest in Japanese culture.
I personally have multiple Neon Genesis Evangelion and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure tattoos. Kris has a wall of Pokemon plushies, Noah is an avid anime fan.
Japanese influence is prevalent as well, such as the Chorus of Blood And Stones being VERY J-Rock/J-Metal influenced. Bands along the lines of X-Japan, D’espairsRay, the GazettE, Maximum the Hormone. I was a big fan of D’espairsRay in High School!They actually came out to Australia for one of the Soundwave festivals if I remember correctly! Then of course the heavier stuff like DEVILOOF!
Our next EP has even more Japanese Speed Metal influences, so look forward to that!
Q7: ファンタジーといえば、アニメ、ゲーム、マンガなど、日本は文字通りファンタジー大国ですよ。
【MARDY】: DRAGONCORPSE のメンバーのほとんどが、日本文化に興味を持っているのは間違いないだろうね。
僕自身、”新世紀エヴァンゲリオン” や “ジョジョの奇妙な冒険” のタトゥーを複数入れているくらいでね。Kris はポケモンのぬいぐるみを壁に飾っているし、Noah は熱心なアニメファンだ。
“Blood and Stone” のコーラスはJ-ロックやJ-メタルにとても影響を受けているし、日本の影響も浸透している。X-Japan, D’espairsRay, The GazettE, Maximum the Hormone のようなバンドからの影響だね。高校時代は D’espairsRay の大ファンだったよ！僕の記憶が正しければ、彼らは実際に Soundwave フェスティバルの1つでオーストラリアに来たことがあるんだ！それからもちろん、DEVILOOF のようなヘヴィなものも大好きさ！
次のEPでは、日本のスピードメタルにさらに影響を受けているから、楽しみにしていてね！
Q8: The world has been plagued by dark shadows of pandemics, wars, and natural disasters. It is in these dark times that I feel that many people use fantasies and exuberance as a place of escape, courage and strength… Do you feel that Deathcore power metal, which encompasses such light and shadow, is perfectly suited to the current era？
【MARDY】: I’m unsure if it is ‘perfectly’ suited, but if any of our listeners find comfort listening to us in these troubled times, then that is a victory regardless.
We want to be a force of positive energy in not only the music scene, but for those around us. We’re all in this together.
Q8: パンデミック、戦争、自然災害など、世界は暗い影に悩まされています。そんな暗い時代だからこそ、多くの人が空想や高揚感を逃避の場とし、パワー・メタルから勇気や力を貰っているような気がします。
そうした光と影を内包するあなたたちのデスコア・パワーメタルは、今の時代に完璧に寄り添っているとも感じますが？
【MARDY】: それが “完璧” なのかどうかはわからないけど、この困難な時代に僕たちを聴いて安らぎを感じてくれるリスナーがいるならば、それは何をおいても勝利だと言えるだろう。
僕たちは、音楽シーンだけでなく、周りの人たちにもポジティブなエネルギーを与える存在でありたいと思っているんだ。結局、僕たちは皆、一緒にいるのだからね。
