EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH JANI STEFANOVIC OF SOLUTION .45 !!

Solution-.45_2015-500x333

Outstanding Modern Melodic Death Metal outfit, SOLUTION .45 has just released long-awaited new album “Nightmares in the Waking State, PT1”!! Welcome to the heavy & progressive Nightmare!!

Wining Where losing is All” などは PERIPHERY と通じるものさえ感じさせますし、Christian が所属していた SCAR SYMMETRY を想起させる部分も存在します。

【INTERVIEW WITH JANI STEFANOVIC】

14786_artist

Q1: This is our first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about the band? How did Solution.45 come to be? And what’s the meaning behind your band name “Solution.45”?

【Jani】: Well Solution .45 is a band that I started together with Christian Älvestam back in 2007. I had a bunch of songs and I needed a good vocalist and so the collaboration began back then. Solution .45 is a melodic death band at its roots combined with a lot of different aspects and emotions. The band is 50/50 Swedish and Finnish. The band name is taken from one of Christian´s song titles he used in Unmoored. It basically suggests that a solution to use is a 45mm gun without any deeper meaning to that. It just sounded cool and different and at the time it was a bit unusual with a number in the band name, so we thought it would stand out a bit.

Q2: Your newest album “Nightmares in the Waking State, Pt.1” is just out now! How are you feeling now? And how are the reactions so far?

【Jani】: Yes it was released on the 20th Nov and the response have been great. The majority of the reviews have been really good between 8-10/10, just a few weaker grades. The fans on Facebook have been really pleased and for the most part people seems to like what they have heard. We in the band have been very satisfied with the end result and it is always nice to hear that others appreciate it as much as we do.

Q2: 新作 “Nightmares in the Waking State, PT.1” がリリースされましたね。

Q3: Your debut album “For Aeons Past” was released at 2010. So, it took five years to release new material. What’s the reason of that?

【Jani】: Yeah it took quite a while, hehe. But there´s actually several reasons to that. I who founded the band left the band for a short period, then we have had other line-up changes. When we started to write this new album in early 2013 we had other setbacks with a few funerals, and then around 2014 and within a year, three members had their first children. Patrick´s daughter was born in Sept 2014, my daughter in Feb 2015 and Christian´s son in Sept 2015. So you can see that a lot of things happened and that is basically the reason why it took so long. The creation of the music in itself was not a long process but then you have all these different things happening around you that affects in some way. Obviously it was never meant to take five years but life happens you know.

Q4: Anyway, “Nightmare in the Waking State” is consisted from two parts. Could you tell us about the story? And why did you separate it for two albums?

【Jani】: Well it is a concept album which portrays a person that fights something invisible, a non-existent enemy that you have no tools to fight. Basically takes you through the different stages when you´re suffering and you´re just without tools to fight back against this, there´s really nothing you can do but you still got to keep fighting. You end up reconciling with something you are unwillingly stuck with. We wanted to separate them into two separate releases just so that we could make sure that the fans have something to wait for, since it took a while since the release of our debut. Another reason is also out of own experience with double albums, that they can feel a bit too much to digest at once. And our albums are filled with details and a lot of action going on. It doesn’t matter if the music is really good you get over fed after a while. Your brain just stops to take it in after a while. Because two hours of music is quite a lot to take in at once. So therefor we chose to split them and this gives you proper time to digest both of them.

Q4: “Nightmares in the Waking State” というコンセプトはアルバム2枚、2章から成るそうですね?

Q5: The album opener, “Wanderer from the Fold” is very aggressive and brutal. I think clean voice of Christian is one of the important identity of Solution.45. But “Wanderer from the Fold” doesn’t have clean part. Why did you choose the song as opener?

【Jani】: Our roots are in the more aggressive music scene so I think it is quite clear that we imparted more of those elements on these new albums. You have a darker and a more aggressive feel to it and this was a deliberate move. We also wanted to shake the perception a bit. People expects us to be a typical harsh verse, clean hit vocals on the chorus and to follow that pattern and we wanted to state right away that we don´t follow any expected patterns. We do what we feel is the best layout for the song. If the song feels best with only harsh vocals then we will do it like that, we will not force in clean vocals just because we are a band that do split vocal arrangements. We knew that this would cause reactions and it´s a bit fun to be provocative like this. Good to stir up some reactions and shake people’s expectations. People have a need to categorize bands a label it as a certain type of music so that they can understand what is going on. But we don´t follow these labels, we do what we feel is exciting and fun to do, that way the music becomes true and honest.

“Wanderer from the Fold” にクリーンを入れなかったのはそれがベストのレイアウトだったから。

Q6: On the other hand, “In Moments of Despair” is amazing beautiful ballad. I love your contrast between brutal and beautiful. I think “Nightmare in Waking State” becomes darker and clean part is decreased. Do you agree that? If so, what is the reason of that?

【Jani】: Yes at some extent it is a darker album in all aspects, both lyrics and music. The reason is like I explained. We all have our roots in the death metal scene and have been a part of many bands in the genre so it is a very natural part of our musical thinking. We decided quite early on that we wanted to have a more in your face approach on this album. So what you can hear is that it is a bit more up tempo, more aggressive riffing, darker elements and the overall atmosphere is darker. But is it was very important to us that we honor where we started, we wanted that the listener would be able to hear familiar elements from the debut but we also wanted to offer something new. As a band we want to develop and progress. We have no interest in doing the same album all over again.

Q7: Technical guitar shredding is also your strong point. Who do you respect as a guitarist? And what do you think about recent tech guitar movement as Djent?

【Jani】: I think my so called idols come from my early days. Now today I can appreciate musicians but when I was younger I was totally blown away. I sometimes miss that feeling you know when you were a kid 12, 13 years old and you heard Pantera for the first time with Dimebag, or the first time I heard Yngwie Malmsteen and so on. I was just totally blown away. But anyway yeah my biggest influences or guys that I have liked a lot. Yngwie Malmsteen for sure, there´s only one Yngwie. Sure many that can shred but not like him, he is one of a kind. Yngwie until ‘Facing the animal’ is just great. Steve Vai when I first heard Passion & Warfare, Paul Gilbert, Dimebag Darrel was a game changer he changed my perception, going from these melodic guys he was so aggressive and wrote insanely cool riffs. He was just so cool, hehe. Later on I discovered Fredrik Thordendahl and he again broadened my view even more. Then there´s of course a lot of more guys and different genres as well since I don´t just listen to metal. But these that I mentioned are probably the main milestones from when I was younger.
When it comes to the Djent scene. I can appreciate a lot of the cool rhythms they do, but I don´t like when it becomes too weird and it´s just difficult rhythms because it has to sound difficult. Many of the bands that I have heard, have cool parts but the songs are quite bad and just weird. Many have called some of our new songs as Djent influenced, but personally I would rather say that I am more Meshuggah influenced than these melodic tech djent bands from the United States, hehe. And if you listen to my bands in the past you can find a sort of trade mark to my sound which is that I have always used a lot of intricate double bass patterns or patterns with a minor hint towards polyrhythms way before Djent even became a term. But yeah I have no major problem with the genre. Some people take the Djent term almost as a curse word, hehe. I love the latest Tesseract album for example so yeah not a stranger to that genre.

Q8: I think you played Bass guitar on this album. Also, you can play Drums. You are one of the most talented person in Sweden, haha. Anyway, that’s way, you’ve been lots of bands. How many bands you are involve in now? Do you think Solution.45 is primary band for you?

【Jani】: hehe thank you. Yeah I started out playing drums which I don´t do that much anymore unfortunately. I don´t play drums in a band anymore just more for fun. Yeah and the bass part was just because we didn´t have a bass player at the time.
Solution .45 is my main band yes, it is the band that we are focusing on most and wish that it could grow into something bigger. We have just started to work with a booking agency (Loud Noise) and hopefully we´ll get some good touring going on.
I also play in Miseration but that is on hold right now. I don´t have ten bands anymore like I used to in the past, hehe. I am married and have a family now so I don´t have as much time as I used to.
