DISC REVIEW “SUBJECTS”

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH JOHN STEVEN MORGAN OF WRECHE !!
“I Think Within Black Metal, The Piano Opens Up Patterns Of Notes That Appear Like Tremolo Riffs, But Sustain a Greater Wealth Of Musicality – Also, Being That The Piano Notes Immediately Die Off After Being Played Unlike a Guitar That Has Sustain, The Athleticism Is Appealing.”
DISC REVIEW “ALL MY DREAMS COME TRUE”
WRECHE “ALL MY DREAMS COME TRUE” : 10/10
INTERVIEW WITH JOHN STEVEN MORGAN
Q1: This is the first interview with you. So, at first could you tell us about yourself? What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?
【JOHN】: Yeah! Thanks for having me here. I grew up in a small rural desert town in CA, USA. I really loved Beethoven as a child (well the more popular pieces like Moonlight Sonata), but the bread and butter for me was listening to bands like The Doors, Queen, Boston, ELO, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin. My dad and I would listen to classic rock on the radio on the way to school or when we were working outside on the property. My first obsession in music was Pink Floyd in high school – especially their psychedelic albums (Piper thru Ummagumma/ Meddle/ Atom Heart Mother).
Q2: You seem to be able to play a variety of instruments, how did you learn how to play them?
【JOHN】: I started piano at 15 and drums around the same time (playing on pots and pans), over time I just really loved to play and it was a great way to find respite from school or sports – then it became a full on passion by the time I turned 18 and started playing / improvising with Barret Baumgart. I just taught myself how to play the instruments and as time went on, I started self-study of Classical music, especially Beethoven. I both listened and read the scores to learn how they achieved certain effects and moods, and how they propelled the music forward through modulation.
Q3: What inspired you to start Wreche? What’s the meaning behind your band name Wreche?
【JOHN】: Well, Barret Baumgart and I started Wreche with our 2017 self-titled album – it was an extension of our 2008 band Architeuthis (which was also piano & drums, just instrumental). He went off to grad school and I was working on other things, but around 2015 we decided we wanted to do another project more in the metal vein. I also wanted to work in a genre that served my ambitions as a pianist and composer – and metal seemed pretty limitless, and still is in my opinion. The meaning behind the band name is “misery” – Wreche is the middle english spelling of wreak – as in to wreak havoc, or befell with great sadness/misery (from the Oxford English Dictionary). I was sad at the time I came up with it haha.
Q4: One of the unique aspects of Wreche is that you use the piano as your main instrument instead of the guitar, even though it’s black metal. Why did you go for such an idea?
【JOHN】: I really love metal, but I don’t play guitar! However, as Barret and I discovered over the years, my playing style really lends itself more to the metal genre than say jazz or classical. I love banging on the thing and I’m a pretty violent player.
Q5: In fact, guitar tremolo riffs are an iconic part of black metal, are you using the piano as an alternative or something completely new? Within the framework of black metal, is there something that can be expressed only with the piano?
【JOHN】: There’s a few sections in “Les Fleurs mov.2” where I purposefully emulate tremolo guitar riffs (as a sort of homage or quote to black metal). Otherwise, yeah it was difficult in some ways to adapt my playing further into the black metal style – especially in terms of subbing for tremolo riffs. I needed a way to create constant motion on the piano. I did this by implementing arpeggios and various triplet or quadruplet double hand patterns to create a moving base for the music to stand on, and to keep up with blast beats. I hope this hits people as completely new – I have never seen the piano used this way in metal before…usually it’s just for pretty little interludes or ballads. I think within black metal, the piano opens up patterns of notes that appear like tremolo riffs, but sustain a greater wealth of musicality – also, being that the piano notes immediately die off after being played unlike a guitar that has sustain, the athleticism is appealing. You have to keep moving to create vast clouds of energy. This is something the piano does that guitars cannot – each note is like a small shard of glass in a mosaic because of the nature of the instrument’s sustain.
Q6: The title “All My Dreams Come True” and the artwork of flowers are far from typical Black metal images, and also very impressive. Can you tell us about the concept of the album and the theme of the lyrics?
【JOHN】: Yes! They are distant from standard black metal imagery. I’m not that into the fantasy/escapist side of black metal, even if I did put flowers on the cover. I really wanted to express what was around me in the city (and even the US) on this album – the widespread poverty and despair, people being tricked by their religious leaders and the politicians backing them, all while there’s tent cities everywhere, abject cruelty. It is so sad. The flowers were a gift to me and I took the photo years before the album was finished. However, the more I thought about life, the more I saw it in relation to the flowers. They live and die, they are put on your grave as a final statement, they grow from last year’s dead detritus every spring as a sign of new life. It was a perfect metaphor for the past/present/future – the cycle of life. The title reflects this – rather than waiting for the afterlife, or some invisible future, it is an urge to see what is in front of you, to be present in your surroundings. It is easy these days with social media to feel so isolated, un recognized – as if your dreams and goals are constantly further away from you because of the comparisons you may make to other people’s successes – all right in your face 24hrs/day. It is a call to throw out fantasy/future planning for some distant plain of transcendence, merely existing for the next day, and realize that this earth, this time we have here, is both heaven and hell. There is no afterlife. Only now. All my dreams came true because I am here..
Q7: At Bandcamp, you quoted Henry Miller’s words. It seems to imply the importance of vocal and lyrics in your mind, would you agree?
【JOHN】: In a lot of ways yes, but I meant it more in terms of making art. The lyrics are very important to me because they voice best what I want to say about the world and my place in it – my personal experiences and observations. The quote for me (which isn’t the objective meaning of course), puts importance on the will to do something less the requisite materials. You could have everything, but if the “want to sing” isn’t there, it means nothing. Also, I see that quote in terms of how something is to be started, or manifested as a work of art, or anything in life for that matter – you simply begin and then it becomes.
Q8: With the emergence of Alcest and Deafheaven, black metal has continued to spread and diversify. You are one of such a new generation, what does the first generation of Inner Circle and evil legends mean to you? Have you ever seen the movie “Lord of Chaos” ?
【JOHN】: Definitely haha! The movie was pretty good. The documentary “until the light takes us” is pretty good too. To me, some of the music still holds up and is really good, but ultimately , they were for the most part (with exceptions like that guy Gaahl) a bunch of suburbia kids running around causing mayhem spreading neo polytheistic, and for some – racist, and homophobic ideas; burning down churches to reclaim their heritage from the crusading Jesus pushers back in 1200AD. Not sure if those bloodlines still run, but I do understand how horrific the christian crusades were – erasing entire cultures in order to replace their history with the Bible’s history, and they did it all over the world. Still, the music was great, the atmosphere was great, though I think kids like that are/would have been diametrically opposed to people like me. One thing I do agree with is the anti-capitalist sentiment.
ドキュメンタリー映画の “Until the Light Take Us” もいいよね。

MESSAGE FOR JAPAN
Thank you so much for reading this! It has been my desire to reach people in Japan ever since 2007 – I was very much into Hella and they toured Japan and made a DVD called Homeboy/Concentration Face. I could not believe the enthusiasm for such a strange band! In America, Hella shows were not packed, but in Japan they were. It made me respect the culture and the open minded approach to life and art. I thought that maybe one day, I can get my music out there because I think people will give it a chance. So, I hope you all enjoy the new record and I hope to get out there to play live one day.
