近年、活発な動きを見せている UK モダンメタルシーン。ご承知の通り、先日の来日でもオーサム過ぎる演奏とステージングで我々を魅了した SIKTH の復活が火に油を注いでいる（？）状況です。今回紹介する SUMER ですが、その SIKTH の JUSTIN HILL がマスタリングを手掛けたデビュー作、”THE ANIMAL YOU ARE” を 11/21 にリリースします。プログメタルとポストメタルとオルタナがモダンにクロスオーバーした様なその音楽は実に新鮮で多くの人を魅了するのではないでしょうか。トリプルギターが生み出す音の”圧”をぜひ感じて下さい。冒頭に貼った日本だけへの完全な新曲 CHISEL に加えて既出の２曲、THE ANIMAL YOU ARE と PINCHCUT も掲載できましたのでぜひ併せてお楽しみ下さい！！
【ABOUT “THE ANIMAL YOU ARE”】
The Animal You Are, engineered and produced by Sean Douglas (The Franklys, The Graveltones, Django Django) and mastered by Justin Paul Hill (Sikth, Yashin, Young Guns), is a dynamic, soulful and groove laden ride into the band’s unique take on modern prog rock and metal, echoing not only contemporary greats such as Karnivool and Gojira but also with a firm rooting back into the glory days of grunge and prog with a nod of the head to the likes of Led Zeppelin, Soundgarden and Smashing Pumpkins. Despite many of these influences the album still retains a distinctly British feel thanks to their unconventional approach to recording which unlike many of their contemporaries, keeps it all live, all analogue and put down on vintage equipment.
“THE ANIMAL YOU ARE” は SEAN DOUGLAS (THE FRANKLYS, THE GRAVELTONES, DJANGO DJANGO) がプロデュースを行い、JUSTIN PAUL HILL (SIKTH, YASHIN, YOUNG GUNS) がマスタリングを手掛けました。モダンプログやメタルにダイナミックなソウルとグルーヴを加えたユニークな作品です。KARNIVOOL や GOJIRA のような現代の巨人たちだけでなく、LED ZEPPELIN, SOUNDGARDEN, SMASHING PUMPKINS といったグランジ、プログロック栄光の時代を思い起こさせるような要素も反映しています。ただそういった様々な要素を含んでいるにもかかわらず、このアルバムはしっかりと英国の空気を保っています。それはこのバンドが他の現代的なバンドと違って全てをライブで、アナログで、という斬新な録音方法を採ったからでしょう。

“We present to you ‘Painters Of The Tempest Part 3’…another piece of the 23 minute song that forms the centrepiece of our new album ‘Citadel’. This is the final part of the song and it follows straight after ‘Part 2, Movement 3: Curator’ that was the taste taste of our new album released online earlier this month. We definitely feel that ‘Painters Of The Tempest in its entirety is our most ambitious work to date and Part 3, featuring only acoustic guitar and violin and showcasing a completely different side to the band, is something we are particular proud of.”
今回聴いてもらうのはPAINTERS OF THE TEMPESTという大曲の第三部なんだ。僕らの新作CITADELの大部分を占める23分の曲の一部だよ。その大曲の最後のパートで今月の初めに公開した’Part 2, Movement 3: Curator’の直後に来る曲なんだ。PAINTERS OF THE TEMPESTは僕らの今までの作品の中で間違いなく完全に最も野心的だと感じているし、アコースティックギターとヴァイオリンだけをフューチャーして完全にバンドの違った一面を見せたPART3は特別誇りに思っているよ。

“Hello entire Japanese population! Or some nutcase metalheads in it. We are Schizoid Lloyd, six lads from The Netherlands, we make progressive experimental avant-garde rock/metal and we have a crazy new song for you called “Suicide Penguin”, which is the first track of our upcoming debut album “The Last Note In God’s Magnum Opus”, and you should most definitely give it a listen! You might end up with a song you like! Which is always a good thing. The song is not actually about a penguin with suicidal thoughts, or, maybe it is, but metaphorically speaking the suicide penguin symbolises a fatal urge or desire. You should youtube that penguin and you’ll know what I mean. Then there is this stuff going on with reincarnation, love, fear of abandonment, existential loneliness, getting tricked by the devil, gangnam style, and magic mountains, but I’m not going into that or I’ll maybe ruin all potential interpretations that differ from my own, which is already very abstract and vague. The best thing you should do is just listen to the music, enjoy it, or not, then listen to it again, and enjoy it some more, or not, repeat ad nauseum. Thanks a lot!”

このテーマは輪廻、愛、放棄される恐怖、精神的な喪失、悪魔に騙される、カンナムスタイル、魔法の山、そういったものに関連しているんだけど説明出来ないね。僕が既に持っている抽象的で漠然とした解釈とは異なる全ての潜在的な解釈を破滅させるかもしれないからね。とにかく音楽を聴いて楽しんで。ダメならもう一回聴いて。それでもダメなら嫌になるほど聴いて。ありがとう！
The freakish debut album by Schizoid Lloyd – a Dutch progressive metal unit whose incredible musical hodgepodge of interests shine through within moments of the 57-minute release – effortlessly hopping from Queen-fueled vocal harmonies to Mr. Bungle lounging to Leprous progression to short outbursts of lunar insanity and even a dash of singer-songwriter sensitivity and white boy rap (when required). Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart would be very, very proud.
