So, at first, could you tell us about yourself and your band? I grew up in the 80s, so as early as age 6, I was obsessed with Michael Jackson&#8217;s &#8220;Thriller&#8221; and Van Halen&#8217;s &#8220;1984&#8221; in particular. The first time I heard &#8220;Money For Nothing&#8221; by Dire Straits, that was when I started daydreaming of playing guitar. I remember jumping around on the living room furniture playing air guitar to that stuff. Then I got into all the 80s hair metal bands, and later I discovered progressive rock when I started listening to Rush. Could you tell us about the story behind that? <\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u3010KEITH\u3011: <\/span><\/strong><\/span><em>Yeah, you know&#8230; band members change. For all kinds of different reasons. It&#8217;s really difficult to keep something solid together. Everyone has different priorities and shit going on in their lives. I&#8217;ve never let anything like that stop me though. I&#8217;ve always made full albums even if I can&#8217;t find the right players to work with, and I&#8217;ll continue to do so. Although I did all writing for this album completely on my own, I was joined by some excellent talent in the recording studio, including Nick Smalkowski on drums, and also backing vocals from Craig Cirinelli and Bridget Bellavia. How did you learn such a many instruments?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u3010KEITH\u3011: <\/span><\/strong><\/span><em>I&#8217;m a classically trained cellist originally, I started playing the cello when I was 8 years old and I took private lessons and played in the orchestra all throughout my school years. That gave me a really solid foundation to branch off in all kinds of directions. I&#8217;m very grateful that I stuck with it. With that skill set, I found I could pick up almost any stringed instrument and kind of figure it out. I have to admit, though, that I can barely play the keyboard, haha! I can form chords and that&#8217;s it, nothing fancy. I also did take singing lessons for about 4 years which has been really helpful. Him and me were really closely bonded. The artist, Jennifer Weiler, is one of my favorite artists of all time. Her talent is unbelievable. I gave her the album title, and suggestions for a few elements to include, and then I let her have complete creative control beyond that point. But what made you mix these aspects? <\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u3010KEITH\u3011: <\/span><\/strong><\/span><em>I love slow, heavy-sounding music, but I also love melodic &amp; catchy songwriting. So much metal out there these days just sounds like a bunch of random riffs pasted together, with no concern for melody or song structure or dynamics. It&#8217;s just not memorable and so much of it sounds the same to me. While there&#8217;s a few exceptions here and there, for the most part I can&#8217;t stand screaming vocals&#8230; I enjoy some Cookie Monster here and there, but a lot of the other stuff sounds like a little kid throwing a temper tantrum or something. No thanks. I like good singing in the music I listen to. Good vocals and good memorable songs are what I&#8217;m into. So I try to make music that&#8217;s got all the elements of heavy metal that I like, but also good melodies that tug at your heartstrings. I employ a lot of major-key stuff in my songs, because I just thing it sounds epic and triumphant. It&#8217;s all about contrast.
