It seems that you are involved in about half of the metal released from Canada! haha! Is your creativity really never ending?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u3010PHIL\u3011: <\/span><\/strong><\/span><em>I am always inspired to write music. I am not able to write every day. I must maintain a balance between writing music, performing shows, rehearsing, teaching music, running my label and spending time with friends, family, my girlfriend as well as going to shows, doing photography or playing video games. But I try to be consistent. What drives me the most is to create music that differs from what is currently being done in my province of Qu\u00e9bec. The scene here is strong but some bands sound very similar. It is my duty to represent my province with music that offers something unique. I also do this to push my scene forward and to motivate my colleagues and friends in the scene to develop their individual sound &amp; do the same.<br \/>\nThis is why I also created my label TSO, which stands for The Stygian Oath. How did you come up with the outlandish idea of lead-based black metal influenced by Manowar and Running Wild?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u3010PHIL\u3011: <\/span><\/strong><\/span><em>The idea came long ago. The first song I wrote for this band was in 2018 when I was still in Eternity&#8217;s End. It didn&#8217;t fit the band so I kept the song for a heavy metal side project alongside a 2nd song. I gave up on the idea quickly however, due to the near-absence of traditional heavy metal vocalists in my province. In 2024, I decided I wanted to release these songs. I wrote more songs in the same vein and I recorded Black Metal vocals on top of them. The combination of Greek Black Metal and 80s heavy metal influences felt appropriate for me, having grown up with both. I felt I also couldn&#8217;t allow myself to repeat old ideas so I decided to put the bass at the forefront, going as far as replacing my guitar solos by bass solos. No one in black metal except Necromantia &amp; Mortuary Drape does this. I played bass in my school orchestra for 5 years and played gigs as a bassist in my teenage years so it was great to fall in love with bass again. My last recording to feature my bass playing was on Le Dernier Cr\u00e9puscule which I recorded in 2015. I did the bass on Le Dernier Cr\u00e9puscule at the last minute as a necessity. On La Grande H\u00e9r\u00e9sie, I could take my time and make sure to write the best bass lines and bass solos possible. I was influenced heavily by Joey Demaio of Manowar, Jens from Running Wild, Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, Flint from Cirith Ungol, Wally Voss from Joey Tafolla&#8217;s former backing band, Billy Sheehan of Mr. Big &amp; It is very easy to tell what inspired this album on the surface. However, a more attentive listen will reveal that these similarities are only at surface-level; we crafted our song structures in a completely different manner than the bands that inspired us. We drew more from classical music than anything else to create a more cinematic experience with each song. There is also a big shrapnel records era influence on this album much like First Fragment. In fact, the last song on Necropalace, titled Witchmoon, features Marty Friedman who did a guitar solo duel alongside me that goes on for nearly 3 minutes. I wanted to combine fast and slow tempos with soaring vocals &amp; shredding over dark slow riffs to create a unique musical contrast. I don&#8217;t see this album as necessarily a progressive metal album, even if I was inspired by Memento Mori &amp; Veni Domine who are considered as progressive doom in many circles. Our songs are long, sure, but it&#8217;s mostly because we play slow and we like to build things up. One thing is certain however : we don&#8217;t always rely on typical song structures. Blighted Deity for example, was written around the melody that occurs at the start of the song. This melody shows up again in the three choruses, but in a different key. It also shows up again in the 2nd solo and in the first faster-paced riff of the song midway through, then one last time at the very end of the song. The song is centered around a central theme rather than a typical compact structure. However, this was not done to appear \u201cprogressive\u201d. This type of songwriting is necessary to effectively fuse power and doom. The only way to make \u201cpower doom\u201d that maintains cohesion through multiple tempo changes is to use recurring motifs that sound as good when played fast or slow. These changes must be given a proper build up, too. Hence the long songs. The same process is used in \u201cWall Of Endless Darkness. The super slow doom riff at the beginning of the song comes back as a fast galloping power metal riff during the 2nd half of the song.<br \/>\nThere is also a strong black metal influence on this album from the synth sounds &amp; use of timpani and harsher rhythm guitar tones to the use of the chromatic median in our chord sequences.
