「僕たちの音楽はすべて、同じ多元宇宙と、その中のキャラクターや出来事をテーマにしているんだ。宇宙の運命がかかった銀河間の紛争に備える必要から始まり、その紛争に参加し、悪の存在であるカオスが解き放たれて宇宙を終わらせる。その後、新しい多元宇宙の誕生に移り、多元宇宙の守護者が設立され、次の潜在的な脅威が紹介されていくよ」
ベイエリアの銀河系間デスメタル・バンド THE BEAST OF NOD は、その”多次元宇宙” という壮大なアルバム・タイトルからして無限の可能性を秘めています。戦争とサバイバルをテーマとした銀河系 SF の大作として、いくつもの宇宙にまたがる未曾有のドラマがメタルサウンドで描かれるカタルシス。間違いなく、このインターギャラクシーな獣の野心は、メタル世界を多次元の “目覚め” へと誘うはずです。

原子物理学者で MIT の博士号を持つギタリスト Dr. Gore と、バイオテック業界で働いていて、生物学と化学のバックグラウンドを持っている Paul Buckley を中心人物とする THE BEAST OF NOD は、その学問的知識の泉とゲームやアニメへの愛情を自らのメタル作品へと惜しみなく注ぎ込んでいます。
Land of Nod の伝承の敵ヴァンパイアに焦点を当てた、アクション満載の SFメタルデビュー作 “Vampira” には、悪魔城ドラキュラやロックマンに影響を受けたと思われるコミックブックが付属していました。そうしてリスナーは、宇宙の運命がかかった銀河間の紛争、悪の存在であるカオスと宇宙の終焉、新たな多元宇宙の誕生へより深く没頭して理解することが可能となったのです。ある意味、あの素晴らしき DETHKLOK は彼らの雛形でしょう。
「Joe Satriani は、Dr. Gore が本格的にギターを弾き始めた頃に最も影響を受けたミュージシャンの一人なんだ。サッチ以外で影響を受けたのは、Reb Beach、Tosin Abasi、そして Yngwie Malmsteen だろうね。また、バッハをはじめとするバロック音楽の作曲家にも大きな影響を受けているよ」
SFやコミックだけでなく、”Multiversal” はギタリストの天国としても充分に野心的です。Joe Satriani, Michael Angelo Batio, ABIOTIC の John Matos, WORMHOLE の Sanjay Kumar, EQUIPOISE の Nick Padovani, BLEAK FLESH の Matias Quiroz、さらに Michael Angelo Batio, Joe Satriani といった大御所までがゲストとしてシュレッドを繰り広げる作品には、さながらアステロイドベルトのように印象的なシュレッドが所狭しと敷きつめられています。まさにシュレッドの小宇宙。

何より、宇宙から降りそそぐ聴覚の電磁波は絶対的です。指さばきが音速を超える複雑怪奇なギターリフ、異次元で巨大なグルーヴのスペクトル、地球外のエイリアン・ボーカル、近未来的な空間を演出するシンセサイザー。BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME のプログレッシブな審美眼、BORN OF OSIRIS のアトモスフェリックな美宇宙、THE HUMAN ABSTRACT のクラシカルな素粒子、ANIMALS AS LEADERS のユニークな星間風、そのすべてはダークマターのようにアグレッシブに結合して、THE BEAST OF NOD という巨大な宇宙船までリスナーをトラクター・ビームで誘導していくのです。
今回弊誌では、THE BEAST OF NOD にインタビューを行うことができました。「僕たちは自分たちをインターギャラクティック・デスメタル・バンドと呼んでいるんだけど、作家や映画だけでなく、アニメやコミックにも大きな影響を受けているんだ」どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH THE BEAST OF NOD
Q1: This is the first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about the band and yourself? What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?
【TBON】: The band formed in Boston but recently relocated to San Francisco. The band was always a death metal band, but became more technical over time and incorporated more progressive elements. I think we enjoyed the challenge of learning to play faster and more complex music as we moved into tech-death territory, and were able to develop more of a unique sound by drawing on prog influences.
The guitarist Dr. Gore is an atomic physicist now working in the private sector. Paul the singer works in Biotech and has a background in biology and chemistry. And Brendan the bass player manages buying and selling at a liquor dispensary.
Growing up we all listened to all different kinds of music, but all did eventually find metal and became fans.
Q1: 本誌初登場です！まずはバンドの音楽的バックグラウンドからお話ししていただけますか？
【TBON】: バンドはボストンで結成されたんだけど、最近サンフランシスコに移転したんだ。もともとはデスメタルのバンドで、時間の経過とともによりテクニカルになり、プログレッシブな要素を取り入れていったね。”Tech-death” の領域に入ることで、より速く、より複雑な音楽を演奏するというチャレンジを楽しむことができたし、プログの影響を受けることで、よりユニークなサウンドを開発することができたと思う。
ギタリストの Dr. Gore は原子物理学者で、現在は民間企業で働いている。ボーカルの Paul はバイオテック業界で働いていて、生物学と化学のバックグラウンドを持っている。そしてベースの Brendan は、酒類販売店での売買を担当しているよ。
子供の頃、僕たちは様々な種類の音楽を聴いていたけど、最終的には全員がメタルに出会い、ファンになったんだ。
Q2: How did The Beast of Nod come to be? What’s the meaning behind your band name?
【TBON】: A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away Paul and previous member Chris began making demos for The Beast of Nod. Down the line other members joined and eventually we met Dr. Gore and he began helping to transform the band into what it is today. There is more than one meaning to the band name but not to be disclosed at this time.
Q2: THE BEAST OF NOD 結成の経緯を教えていただけますか？
【TBON】: 遠い昔、遥か彼方の銀河系で、Paul と前メンバーの Chris が THE BEAST OF NOD のデモを作り始めたんだ。その後、他のメンバーが加わり、最終的には Dr. Gore と出会い、彼がバンドを現在のように変化する手助けをしてくれたね。
このバンド名には複数の意味があるんだけど、今はまだ公表できない。
Q3: Your debut album “Vampira: Disciple of Chaos” was released with the comic book “Sentient Squirrel Death Machine”. Why did you decide to do that, which is quite unusual for a metal band?
【TBON】: All our music and media are about the original sci-fi universe and now multiverse that we created. We want to offer fans the ability to really be able to dive in and enjoy the experience on a deeper level, plus it is a lot of fun for us. We fully intend to be moving forward with releasing more comics in time.
Q3: デビュー・アルバム “Vampira: Disciple of Chaos” には、”Sentient Squirrel Death Machine” というコミック・ブックが付属していましたね？
【TBON】: 僕たちの音楽やメディアはすべて、自分たちが創造したオリジナルのSF宇宙と多元宇宙に関するものなんだ。
ファンのみんなには、コミックを読むことでより深いレベルでこの SF 体験を楽しんでもらいたいと思っているし、僕たちにとってもそのプランはとても楽しいことなんだよね。だから時間をかけてコミックのリリースを進めていくつもりだよ 。
Q4: The Beast of Nod is called something like “Intergalactic Metal” and has an epic science fiction theme. What specific writers and films have influenced you?
【TBON】: Indeed! We refer to ourselves as an Intergalactic Death Metal band and are heavily influenced by a number of not only writers and films but also anime and comics. Specifically, we have influence from various Marvel and DC writers, especially Hickman. Novelists of influence would include Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, Tolkien, and Jules Verne. Some films of influence would be The Transformers: The Movie (1986), Heavy Metal, Kung Fury, and the original Star Wars Trilogy.
Q4: 仰る通り SF をビッグテーマとし、”インターギャラクティック・メタル” “銀河系間のメタル” と称される THE BEAST OF NOD ですが、どういった映画や小説に影響を受けているのですか？
【TBON】: その通りだよ! 僕たちは自分たちをインターギャラクティック・デスメタル・バンドと呼んでいるんだけど、作家や映画だけでなく、アニメやコミックにも大きな影響を受けているんだ。
具体的には、様々なマーベルやDCの作家、特にヒックマンから影響を受けているね。小説家では、ラヴクラフト、ロバート・E・ハワード、トールキン、ジュール・ヴェルヌなどに影響を受けているよ。
映画なら、『トランスフォーマー』（1986年）、『ヘビーメタル』、『カン・フューリー』、『スター・ウォーズ』のオリジナル3部作などが挙げられるだろうな。
Q5: Japan is a treasure trove of science fiction anime and games such as Evangelion and Gundam. Have you been influenced by Japanese culture?
【TBON】: Most definitely yes! You mentioned our Sentient Squirrel Origin comic in a previous question, there are direct references to Naruto in some of the panels. We all enjoy some anime and video games. Paul is a huge fan of shounen anime and has watched dozens over the years, some of his favorites are Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter, and One Piece. He is also a very big fan of Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Castlevania games, often wearing a Zelda shirt on stage. And he collects Transformers. These stories and characters certainly influence the story and character creation in Paul’s writing.
Q5: ご存知かもしれませんが、エヴァンゲリヲンやガンダムなど、日本は SF ゲームやアニメの宝庫ですよ？
【TBON】: 間違いなくそうだよね！前の質問で “Sentient Squirrel Origin” というコミックの話が出たけど、いくつかのコマでは NARUTO を直接参照しているんだ。僕たちはみんな、アニメやビデオゲームを楽しんでいるんだよ。
Paul は少年アニメの大ファンで、何年もかけて何十本も見てきている。その中でも幽遊白書、ハンター×ハンター、ワンピースなどは大のお気に入りだね。また、ゼルダ、ファイナルファンタジー、悪魔城ドラキュラといったゲームの大ファンでもあり、ライブ・ステージではよくゼルダのTシャツを着ているよ。トランスフォーマーを集めているしね。
そういったアニメやゲームのストーリーやキャラクターは、Paul の執筆活動におけるストーリーやキャラクター作りに確実に影響を与えているね。
Q6: In the metal world, bands like Voivod, Cynic, Vector, etc. have been using science fiction as a theme. Did you use their approach as a reference?
【TBON】: We were certainly fans of and aware of all these bands before we formed but never have really used them as a reference for how we approach things. There definitely was a point in time in our early days where we committed to being a concept band but that was more based on what we were having fun with than anything else.
Q6: メタル世界では、VOIVOD, CYNIC, VEKTOR といったバンドが SF を主題とした音楽を展開してきました。彼らのやり方は参考にしていますか？
【TBON】: 僕たちは、結成前からそういったバンドのファンで意識していたけど、自分たちのアプローチ方法の参考にしたことはないだろうね。確かに初期の頃はコンセプト・バンドに徹していた時期もあったけど、それは何よりも自分たちが楽しんでいることがベースになっていたんだよね。
Q7: “Multiversal” is such a great album, a cross between Between The Buried and Me and Born of Osiris! What is the story behind this album? Is it related to the previous one?
【TBON】: Wow, thank you very much for the kind compliment and we are glad you dig it! All our music is about the same multiverse and the characters and events within it. Multiversal tells one continuous story from beginning to end and picks up directly where the story for the song A Prison of Ice from out last album leaves off. We start by needing to prepare for an intergalactic conflict where the fate of universe is at stake, we engage in that conflict and the evil being Chaos is unleashed and ends the universe. We then transition to the birth of the new multiverse where the Guardians of the Multiverse are established, and we are introduced to our next potential threat. Our last album Vampira: Disciple of Chaos was still about the same universe and characters, but each song discussed individual characters or stories. Q7: それにしても、BETWEEN THE BURIED ANE ME と BORN OF OSIRIS の邂逅のような “Multiversal” は素晴らしいレコードですね！ストーリー自体は前作と関連しているのでしょうか？
【TBON】: 嬉しい言葉をありがとう！気に入ってくれて嬉しいよ。僕たちの音楽はすべて、同じ多元宇宙と、その中のキャラクターや出来事をテーマにしているんだ。”Multiversal” では、最初から最後まで1つの連続したストーリーが展開され、前作収録の “A Prison of Ice” のストーリーがそのまま引き継がれているんだよね。
宇宙の運命がかかった銀河間の紛争から始まり、その紛争に参加し、悪の存在であるカオスが解き放たれて宇宙を終わらせる。その後、新しい多元宇宙の誕生に移り、多元宇宙の守護者が設立され、次の潜在的な脅威が紹介されていくよ。

Q8: Joe Satriani and MAB also make guest appearances on the album, so it’s a heavenly album especially for guitarists. DR. GOREBLASTER KORPSE-HARVEST LUNDEN has a PhD from MIT, what guitarists have influenced him? What are the characteristics of his playing?
【TBON】: Satriani was one of Dr. Gore’s biggest influences when he started getting serious about playing guitar. Aside from Satch, some of his biggest influences are Reb Beach, Tosin Abasi, and a bit of Yngwie Malmseen. He’s also pretty heavily influenced by a number of Baroque composers, particularly Bach.
In terms of characteristics, his playing definitely features a lot of tapping, and a lot of pseudo-classical arpeggio sequences.

【TBON】: Joe Satriani は、Dr. Gore が本格的にギターを弾き始めた頃に最も影響を受けたミュージシャンの一人なんだ。サッチ以外で影響を受けたのは、Reb Beach、Tosin Abasi、そして Yngwie Malmsteen だろうね。また、バッハをはじめとするバロック音楽の作曲家にも大きな影響を受けているよ。
彼の演奏の特徴としては、確かなのはタッピングが多く、疑似クラシック的なアルペジオ・シーケンスも多いよね。
