Sprawling 83 Minute Double Album, Perfect Epic “Legends of the Shires” Is An Excellent Introduction To Threshold’s World !!
DISC REVIEW “LEGENDS OF THE SHIRES”
結成は1988年。1993年にデビュー作をリリースした不朽のプログメタルアクト THRESHOLD が、”モンスターレコード”の名に相応しきダブルアルバム “Legends of the Shires” をリリースしました！！ デビュー当初、”英国からの DREAM THEATER への回答” と謳われし希少なる生残の先駆者は、四半世紀の時を超え遂に至純なる “アンサー” を提示しています。
海外のプログメタルシーンでは、信頼出来るビッグネームとして揺るぎない地位を築いて来た THRESHOLD。一方で、残念ながら日本ではおそらく、 “スレショルド” “スレッショウルド” “スレッシュホウルド” 等、今一定まらない名前の読みづらさと、サーカスライクの派手なプレイに頼らない楽曲重視の音楽性に起因する無風、凪の状況が長く続いてきました。しかし、”Legends of the Shires” は間違いなく日本のファンにとって THRESHOLD への素晴らしき “Threshold” “入口” となるはずです。
楽器陣は2003年から不変である THRESHOLD の歴史は、天賦の才に恵まれた3人のシンガーが織り成す鮮やかな音楽絵巻だと言えます。今回リードシンガーを務める Glynn Morgan は、バンドのセカンドアルバム “Psychedelicatessen” 以来の復帰。三度目の脱退となった前任者 Damian Wilson の魅力でもある若干クセの強い歌声に比べると、2011年に残念ながら亡くなってしまった Andrew “Mac” McDermott の透明でハーモニーの映える声質に近いように感じますね。IRON MAIDEN の Bruce 後任オーディションで最終選考まで残った実力は本物です。
実際、Richard はインタビューで、”Legends of the Shires” が、”Mac” 時代の名作 “Subsurface” “Dead Reckoning” と似た雰囲気を持つことを認めています。そして、おそらくこの並外れたコロッサルなエピックは、精彩なるメロディーの崇高美、エレガントで壮観な審美的デザインの観点から前述の二枚をも凌駕しているのです。
バンドはリスナーのイマジネーションに配慮し、あまり作品の背景、詳細を明かそうとはしませんが、アルバムが同郷のトールキンの小説にインスパイアされていることは確かでしょう。”The Shire” とはトールキン作品の舞台である “中つ国” に存在するホビットの美しき居住地。そして Richard 語るところの ｢変化からより強くなって戻ってくる｣ というメッセージには、どうやら現在の英国の状況を隠喩し重ねている部分もあるようです。
アルバムは鐘の音、鳥の囀り、そしてアコースティックサウンドで悠久の大地を眼前に描く “The Shire (Part 1)” で緩やかに幕を開けます。続くダークで小気味よいリフワークが印象的な “Small Dark Lines” でアルバムのストーリーは躍動を始め、THRESHOLD の真骨頂とも言える鮮やかなメロディーでリスナーの心を溶かすのです。
事実、Glynn は、ハイトーンに重きを置く他のプログメタルアクトとは一線を画する、ミッドレンジ中心の爽やかでエモーションにフォーカスした歌唱を披露。頭に残るボーカルとコンパクトなリフワーク、ツインギターのハーモニーは、バンドがキャッチーでコマーシャルな楽曲を恐れない冒頭の強固な意思表示となっていますね。
とは言え、勿論プログレッシブな一面はバンドの象徴です。”The Man Who Saw Through Time”, “Lost In Translation” の10分を超える二つの叙事詩は、THRESHOLD がプログレッシブなスピリットと、豊潤なるサウンドスケープを内包する稀有な集団であることを雄弁に語っていますね。複雑でしかしナチュラルにレイヤーされた広大な音楽のパノラマは、Karl の見事なトーンコントロール、Richard のムーディーで流れるようなキーボード捌き、ドライブするシーン屈指のソリッドなリズム隊を携え、様々な場面を映す奇跡のオデッセイとしてリスナーに “The Shire” の景観や物語を運ぶのです。
アルバムのハイライトは、”Stars and Satellites” で訪れます。DREAM THEATER がハイテクニカルで、圧倒的なある種数学的視点によりプログメタルを捉えたのに対して、FROST*, VANDEN PLAS, そして THRESHOLD 等はプログレッシブロックの精神性やコンセプトによりフォーカスしているのかも知れませんね。
Richard が影響を受けたアルバムに、KING CRIMSON や YES ではなく PINK FLOYD, GENESIS を挙げているのは象徴的かも知れません。このスーパーキャッチーで、聴く度に心が踊るポップな宇宙は、逆に DREAM THEATER が決して到達し得ないプログレッシブポップ領域のはずです。
アルバムは英国からの回答をより鮮明に感じさせる、美しきピアノバラード “Swallowed” で静かに幕を閉じました。
今回弊誌では、1992年からバンドのキーボードプレイヤーを務める Richard West にインタビューを行うことが出来ました。間違いなく日本でこそ評価されるべきバンドです。どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH RICHARD WEST
Q1: First of all, you parted ways with long time, three times singer, Damian Wilson. You stated you’ll “start a new chapter without him” and it seemed to be unexpected to Wilson, right? What made you so?
【RICHARD】: He didn’t want anyone to know the reasons so I’d rather not comment on them. There were some things that changed the atmosphere in the band and it was best to move on.
Q1: まず、長年ボーカルを務めてきた Damian Wilson がバンドを離れましたね？
【RICHARD】: 彼は誰にもバンドを離れた理由を知られたくないんだよ。だから僕からはコメントしない方が良いだろうね。
まあ、バンドの雰囲気を変えるような出来事がいくつかあって、彼の脱退がベストな選択となったのさ。
Q2: Considering the tragic loss of another former vocalist, Andrew ‘Mac’ MacDermott, who sadly passed away in 2011, Threshold have not had the greatest of fortune when it comes to retaining your vocalists. Anyway, after the decision, you are welcoming former singer Glynn Morgan back into the fold, for the first time since “Psychedelicatessen” in 1994. What’s the story behind that?
【RICHARD】: Glynn was our vocalist from 1994 to 1996, he actually did our first ever European tour with us. After he left the band he came back in 2008 to record some bonus tracks for our “Paradox” box set, and I also worked with him on League Of Lights and some other projects. So we’ve remained friends over the years and his voice has always sounded so good! So when we were looking for somebody to replace Damian, Glynn was our top choice – in fact, he was our only choice!
Q2: 後任には、1994年の “Psychedelicatessen” 以来バンドを離れていた Glynn Morgan が指名されました。
【RICHARD】: Glynn は1994年から1996年までバンドのシンガーだったんだ。実際、バンド初のヨーロッパツアーは彼と回ったからね。
バンドを離れた後も、2008年には “Paradox” ボックスセットのボーナストラックを何曲かレコーディングするために復帰したしね。僕自身は彼と、League of Lights や他のプロジェクトでも共演して来たんだ。
だから、長い年月を経ても僕たちは友人だったし、彼の声はいつだって素敵なんだよ！
それで僕たちが Damian の後任を探さなければならなくなった時に、Glynn はファーストチョイスだった訳さ。というか、彼以外に選択肢はなかったね！
Q3: So, let’s talk about your newest record “Legends of the Shires”. You state “Legends Of The Shires” is a concept album about a nation trying to find its place in the world. It could also be about a person trying to do much the same thing. Specifically, what kind of story exists in the album?
【RICHARD】: I don’t want to go into too much detail. I would prefer our fans to follow the story with no preconceptions. The story’s written very loosely so people can find their own meaning. However, it’s a story that takes you though the excitement of new beginnings, the frustrations of daily life, losing everything, the struggle of starting again and how you come back from that changed and stronger.
Q3: では、最新作 “Legends of the Shires” について話しましょう。まずは、この素晴らしきコンセプトアルバムのストーリーについて話していただけますか？
【RICHARD】: 詳細については、あまり話したくないんだよ。ファンには先入観なしでストーリーに接して欲しいと思うからね。
今回のストーリーは、みんなが自分なりの意味を見つけられるように、とてもルーズに書いたんだよ。
ただ言えるのは、このストーリーは新たな始まりの興奮、日常生活の不満、すべてを失うこと、再び始めることの苦労、そして君たちがそういった変化からどのようにより強くなって戻ってくるのかを伝える物語なんだ。
Q4: This is 83 minutes long journey, double album. Have you assumed this length from the beginning?
【RICHARD】: Once we started writing, the music just started flowing, we had a really creative period, so we soon knew this would be a long record. So it was a great opportunity to make a “progressive concept double album”.
Q4: バンドの新たな旅は、83分のダブルアルバムという壮大なエピックに仕上がりました。ライティングプロセスの始めから、この長さを予想していたのでしょうか？
【RICHARD】: 一度僕たちが作曲を始めると、ただ音楽は流れるように湧きいでて、本当にクリエイティブな期間を過ごすんだ。だから、作曲を始めてすぐに、これは長いレコードになると分かったよ。
“プログレッシブコンセプトダブルアルバム” を作る良い機会になったね。
Q5: Definitely, “Legends of the Shires” is the most ambitious, emotive, record that THRESHOLD have made to date. Adding that, I’m really attracted by the beautiful melodies like “Stars and Satellites”. What’s your perspective about the evolution from “For the Journey”?
【RICHARD】: We were really proud of that record, but we knew it was maybe less complex than some of our older work. We seem to go in cycles between less complex and more complex records, so “For The Journey” was probably the trigger to pull out all the stops again.
Q5: “Legends of the Shires” は THRESHOLD がこれまでリリースした作品の中で間違いなく、最も野心的でエモーションに溢れたレコードです。メロディーも本当に美しいですね！
あなたから見て、前作 “For The Journey” から特に進化を遂げたと感じる部分はどの辺りですか？
【RICHARD】: 僕たちは本当にこのレコードを誇りに思っているんだよ。ただ、この作品が過去のアルバムに比べてあまり複雑ではない事も分かっているんだ。
僕たちはあまり複雑ではないレコードと、複雑なレコードを行ったり来たりしているようにも思えるね。だから言ってみれば “For The Journey” が全ての引き金となったのかも知れないね。
Q6: Anyway, prog scene has been moved on more technical, complex direction. For example, djent is one of the symbol of that. I think Threshold is different from the movement. I feel that you first cherish songs, melodies, and emotions. Do you agree that?
【RICHARD】: Yes, those are the things that move and inspire me the most. Technicality is great but I prefer it to be part of the song, not instead of the song.
Q6: 複雑性と言えば、プログシーンは近年、Djent のようにより複雑でハイテクニカルな方向へと進んで来ました。しかし、THRESHOLD は逆にメロディーやエモーションへと重点を置いているようですね？
【RICHARD】: うん、そういった要素こそが最も僕を感動させ、インスパイアするんだよ。勿論、テクニックは重要だけど、僕はそれを楽曲の一部に組み込むのが好きなんだ。テクニックを追求するよりもね。
Q7: I saw Dream Theater “I&W 25th anniversary tour” yesterday, in Japan. Actually, Threshold keeps the band as long as they are. There are not many prog metal bands that have been on since the early 1990s. And I feel you two are definitely legend of prog metal scene. So, do you feel kind of empathy with them?
【RICHARD】: Yes, we toured with Dream Theater back when Glynn was our vocalist the first time around. In our early days we were often called the British answer to Dream Theater. In reality I thin we’re very different bands, but I guess we are inspired by the same sort of things so I understand the comparison. They were awesome to tour with, Mike Portnoy was their drummer at the time and we had a young drummer called Jay Micciche. Mike really took Jay under his wing, let him sit behind him on stage every night. I’d love to tour with them again some day.
Q7: 先日、DREAM THEATER の “Images and Words” 25周年アニバーサリーツアーを見たのですが、実際圧倒されました。THRESHOLD は彼らと同じくらい長いキャリアを誇りますね。DREAM THEATER に共感を覚える部分はありますか？
【RICHARD】: そうだね。僕たちは、Glynn が最初にバンドのシンガーだった頃、彼らと初めてツアーしたんだよ。実際、初期には “英国からの DREAM THEATER への回答” などと呼ばれたりもしたからね。
現実には、僕たちは全然違うタイプのバンドだと思うよ。ただ、僕たちがある面でインスパイアされているのは確かだろうから、その比較は理解出来るんだ。
彼らとツアーを回るのは最高だったな。当時 DREAM THEATER のドラマーは Mike Portnoy だったんだけど、彼は僕たちの若いドラマー Jay Micciche の面倒を本当に良く見てくれていたんだ。毎晩、ステージで彼をセットの後ろに座らせていたよ。またいつか、彼らとツアーが出来たらいいね。
Q8: That is to say, you have huge discography. When our readers jump into Threshold world, which record do you recommend next to “Legends of the Shires”?
【RICHARD】: It’s hard to choose because they all have something different, but I would choose “Subsurface” or “Dead Reckoning”. Those were our last two albums with Mac and we had something special going on. Those albums probably inspired the sound of “Legends Of The Shires” more than our other work.
Q8: バンドは膨大なディスコグラフィーを誇ります。弊誌の読者が “Legends of the Shires” の次に THRESHOLD ワールドへ進むとしたら、どの作品を勧めますか？
【RICHARD】: アルバムはどれも異なる部分を持っているから、選ぶのは難しいね。ただ、”Subsurface” か “Dead Reckoning” を勧めたいと思うよ。Mac と作った最後の2枚だから、特別な想いを持ち続けているのは確かさ。この2枚は、僕たちの他の作品より、おそらく “Legends of the Shires” のサウンドをより想起させるだろうね。
