US 変態超常異能集団 KAYO DOT。昨年、彼らの10周年記念盤として製作され発売された二枚組みの大作 HUBARDO は各所で絶賛を博しました。弊サイトでも昨年のベストアルバムに選出、加えてKAYO DOT の頭脳 TOBY にインタビューを行う事が出来ました( INTERVIEW WITH TOBY DRIVER 2013 )。それから一年、THE FLENSER RECORDS という彼らにピッタリなレーベルに移って刺激を受けたのか驚くべき早さで新作が届きました。タイトルは COFFINS ON IO 。従来の EXPEIMENTAL, AVANT-GARDE, JAZZ, PROG 要素に加えてメタル要素を前面に押し出し、彼らの作品中で最も激しいアルバムとなった前作に対して今作はメタル要素は非常に薄めです。PROG, ELECTRONICA, NEW WAVE, その辺りをごちゃ混ぜにしてモダンな彩を加えたようなアルバムに仕上がりました。80年代と現在、そして未来を行き来しているような感覚に襲われますね。NOT MADE OF METAL, BUT HEAVY。そう表現したくなるような深みと知性に溢れたこれもまた KAYO DOT の素晴らしいアルバムです。彼らの代名詞となった SAX の使い方も相変わらず秀逸ですね。弊サイトでは初、二度目の登場となる歌に目覚めた TOBY DRIVER に話が聞けました。どうぞ。
【ABOUT “COFFINS ON IO”】
Q1:’Hubardo’ was Kayo Dot’s 10th aniversary 2CDs album. That was special and succeded. Do you have kind of pressure about making next album ‘Coffins of Io’?
【TOBY】: No, because Coffins on Io was not really planned to be a Kayo Dot album. It originally started off as a handful of slightly more easygoing songs that I was playing around with in the month after Hubardo was released. Through a series of fortunate circumstances, the music ended up becoming a Kayo Dot album after all. I guess this opens up a question about what makes something a Kayo Dot album? Is it the vision? Or it is the band members? I think in the past it has been the vision… but Coffins on Io marks a point at which Kayo Dot’s identity is suddenly defined by the band members. I think there will be more pressure about making our next album.
Q1: 前作 “HUBARDO” は KAYO DOT の 10 周年記念作品として製作され二枚組みの大作として仕上がりました。特別なアルバムで成功を収めましたね。今回、新作 “COFFINS ON IO” を製作するにあたってプレッシャーのようなものはありましたか？
【TOBY】: いや、なかったよ。というのもそもそも “COFFINS ON IO” は KAYO DOT のアルバムとして計画されていた物ではなかったからなんだ。もともとは “HUBARDO” がリリースされて一ヶ月後位に、もう少しリラックスした感じの曲を作り出したのが始まりなんだ。嬉しい悩みの類なんだけど結局その音楽が KAYO DOT のアルバムとなったんだよね。この経緯は僕に何が KAYO DOT のアルバムをして KAYO DOT のアルバムたらしめているかという疑問を投げかける事になった。ヴィジョンだろうか？バンドのメンバーだろうか？嘗てはヴィジョンだと思っていたんだ・・・だけど思いがけない事に “COFFINS OF IO” を製作する事で KAYO DOT のアイデンティティーはバンドのメンバーだって判ったんだ。次のアルバムはもっとプレッシャーがかかるだろうね。
Q2: ‘Hubardo’ was concept album and had very long story. Your lyrics are always so interesting. Anyway, does ‘Coffins of Io’ have a conceptual story?
【TOBY】: It doesn’t have a conceptual story, but it does have a theme. I always try to create specific atmospheres with my music – so, all the songs on Coffins on Io support the album’s atmosphere, and they are musically tied together, but there is no narrative. But in a way, every song is its own character in one imagined universe.
Q2: “HUBARDO” はコンセプトアルバムで壮大な物語がありました。あなたの書く歌詞はいつも興味深いですね。今回は何かコンセプトのような物はありますか？
【TOBY】: 今回はコンセプトのようなものはないよ。だけどテーマならある。僕はいつも音楽にある特定の雰囲気のようなものを作ろうとしているんだ。だから “COFFINS ON IO” に収録されている全ての曲がアルバムの雰囲気を作り出しているのさ。それらは音楽的に固く団結しているよ。だけど物語はない。あたかも全ての曲が独自のキャラクターを持ちながら一つの想像上の宇宙を形作っているかのようだね。
Q3: And ‘Hubardo’ was heavy album. uh…that is not correct. ‘Hubard’ had very heavy and aggresive part in the album. ‘Coffins of Io’ isn’t. Maybe, lots of fans are surprised about this change. Why did you change your music drastically?
【TOBY】: Hubardo and its predecessor, Gamma Knife, had pretty aggressive songs, and I had kind of gotten that out of my system for the time being. I also wanted to focus more on melodramatic, ballad-inspired singing for Coffins on Io, and not screaming, so I had to set up in the music in a way that would support that.
Q3: “HUBARDO” はとてもヘヴィーで激しいパートを伴ったアルバムでしたね。”COFFINS ON IO”はそうではありません。多くのファンはこの変化に戸惑うのではないでしょうか。
【TOBY】: “HUBARDO” ともう一つ前の “GAMMA KNIFE” にはとてもアグレッシブな曲が収録されていたよね。時間の経過と共にそういう欲求を出し切ってしまったんだ。同時に “COFFINS ON IO” ではもっとメロドラマ的な、バラードちっくな歌唱に集中したかった。スクリームではなくてね。だから新しい方向に進んだんだ。
Q4: I love this kind of style. And the important thing is we can feel ‘Kayo dot’ from every part of the album even if the style has changed. Anyway, What’s the influence of ‘Coffins of Io? Dark wave? New wave? Prog rock?
【TOBY】: Thanks! I’m glad you can still hear the musical identity. I guess I have developed certain idiosyncracies in my writing style – that is, I have a characteristic “voice” – that’s great that it comes through! I think that’s what any composer wants. The musical influence on Coffins on Io, to be honest, was mostly our band’s forays into regular karaoke nights here in Brooklyn. We started going out for fun and for practice, and from singing other people’s songs, I realized all the brilliant uniquenesses of each singer, and the way they write vocal parts that would have been counterintuitive to me. I wanted to explore that more, and see if I could write this type of vocal part that would make a good, catchy karaoke song that was fun and interesting to sing, while making unpredictable melodic moves.
Q4: 新しい方向性も良いですね。重要なのはスタイルが変わっても KAYO DOT だと判ることです。この方向性を何と呼びましょう？ DARK WAVE? NEW WAVE? PROG?
【TOBY】: ありがとう！スタイルが変わってもまだ僕らのアイデンティティーを感じてくれて嬉しいよ。作曲においてある僕の特徴が進化したと思うんだ。それは僕が個性的な声を確立したって事だね。達成できて嬉しいよ。作曲家ならみんな欲しがると思う。“COFFINS ON IO” の音楽的影響だけど、マジな話、ここブルックリンでメンバーと行く普段のカラオケナイトからがほとんどなんだ。楽しんだり練習するために行き始めたんだけど他人の歌を歌っている内にどのシンガーも輝く個性を持っている事に気づいたんだ。彼らがボーカルパートを書く方法って僕にとってはなじみがないと言うか反直感的。もっとそういうやり方を開拓したかったし、自分でこういった楽しくて歌いたくなるキャッチーなカラオケソングのボーカルパートを上手く書けるのか知りたかったんだ。そういったメロディーの動きは予測出来ないからね。
Q5: THE Flenser Records is very suites to Kayo Dot, I think. Have a nice life, Botanist, Wreck and Reference. They are great. And off course, you released Vaura from FR. Why did you choose them?
【TOBY】: I think so too! Well, it was simple. I liked the bands on their label, I like their aesthetic, and they are fans of Kayo Dot. So it was an obvious choice. 🙂
Q5: THE FLENSER RECORDS は KAYO DOT にぴったりのレーベルだと思います。 HAVE A NICE LIFE, BOTANIST, WRECK AND REFERENCE など優れたバンドが所属しています。勿論、あなたの別バンド VAURA も所属していますし。
【TOBY】: 僕もそう思うよ！単純にこのレーベルのバンドが好きだったし、彼らの情熱も素晴らしいね。それに彼らの方も KAYO DOT のふぁんなんだ。まあだから即決だったよ(笑)
