「どちらかと言えば、私たちは自分たちの経験や、他人の愛すべき経験を楽曲にする人道主義者なのかもしれないわね。それこそメンタルの問題から SNS の誤用まで扱うようなね。」
沸騰する英国のライジングスター EMPLOYED TO SERVE。フロントウーマン Justine Jones は、獰猛なメタリックハードコアの刃に希望の “ヒューマニティー” を抱懐し、現代社会の歪みと真摯に対峙しています。
「”Suspended in Emptiness” は SNS を額面通りに受け取るなって曲なの。休日の楽しそうな出来事をポストしているけど、その裏側ではみんな苦しんでいるのよ。SNS だけを見て、他人が自分より優れているとか、幸せだとか考えるのはバカげているわ。」
ポケットの中のほんの小さな長方形の物体は、いつしか大きく社会を支配し “ドーパミン中毒者” の文明へと世界を塗り替えてしまった。Justine は、数分おきにその物体を見つめ、ハートのタップを確認する “承認の渇望” 状態が永続的かつ健全だとは考えていません。
むしろ、そうして発生する怒りや憂鬱、混乱の悪循環が、メンタルイルネス、自己陶酔、セクシズムといった負の連鎖を生んでいると彼女は主張し、ハードコアのカオスと Nu-metal のブルータリティー、そしてオルタナティブなスピリットで代弁者として悲壮な咆哮を放つのです。
彼らが雇われ、使役するのは歪な社会の犠牲者のみ。そしてその強固な決意は “Eternal Forward Motion” “永遠に前へと進む” 最新作へグルーヴと共に深々と刻まれています。

Justin と彼女のフィアンセでギタリスト Sammy Urwin の小さなアパートメントで産声をあげた EMPLOYED TO SERVE は、今やメタリックハードコアの新たな大渦を巻き起こす原動力の一つです。
CHARIOT や NORMA JEAN, CONVERGE, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN といったカオテイックなハードコアと、SLIPKNOT, KORN, DEFTONES の Nu-metal 遺伝子を配合し猛襲するバンドの牙は、同世代の CODE ORANGE, VEIN といったエクストリームな野心家の理念や創造性と激しくシンクロしていたのです。
数学的な混沌と、マスリスナーへ訴求するキャッチーなグルーヴのキメラこそが世界を席巻するバンドのブースター。TDEP の複雑怪奇と SLIPKNOT のホラー映画をミックスした “Dull Ache Behind My Eyes”、 KORN の憂鬱とヘヴィネスに Justin のハードコアな咆哮が響く “Harsh Truth”。獰猛な狂気を纏いながらしかしフックに満ちた楽曲は、リアルなリリックを携えて数知れない “奪われた” 若者たちの声なき声を代弁して世界へと突きつけるのです。
そうしてアルバムは、10曲のブルータルでダークな告発の後、”Bare Bones Of A Blue Sky” で一筋の光明を見出します。DEFTONES とシューゲイザーの穏やかで美しき邂逅は、Justin が繰り返す “Open Your Eyes” のスクリームと共にリスナーへ明日への希望を届けるのです。
今回弊誌では、Justine Jones にインタビューを行うことができました。「結局のところ、生きていく中で何を学ぶかが重要で、自分を堕落させようとする人間に同調しないことが大事だと思うわ。人はその生い立ちで判断されたり虐待を受けるべきではないのよ。私はそういった悲しい出来事が徐々に減ってきていると感じているの。だからうまくいけば、時間の経過とともにいつか消えればいいのだけど。」

INTERVIEW WITH JUSTINE JONES
Q1: This is a first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about yourself? What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?
【JUSTINE】: I’m Justine the vocalist of Employed to serve and label manager at Holy Roar Records. I grew up listening to Blink 182, Nirvana and red hot chilli peppers, this later changed into Slipknot, Korn, Deftones, nine inch nails and beyond in my teens.
Q1: 本誌初登場です。まずはあなたの音楽的なバックグラウンドからお話ししていただけますか？
【JUSTINE】: 私は Justine。EMPLOYED TO SERVE のボーカル、そして Holy Roar Records のレーベルマネージャーもやっているのよ。
子供の頃は、BLINK 182とか NIRVANA, RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS を聴いていたわ。それが後に、SLIPKNOT, KORN, DEFTONES, NINE INCH NAILS といったバンドに移っていったの。そうやって10代を過ごしていたわね。
Q2: Your wide range of scream is fucking awesome! Could you tell us your vocal influences?
【JUSTINE】: Haha thanks! Vocally my main influences are Randy from lamb of God and chino from Deftones, I think both are really versatile and talented vocalists. It took me quite a few years to get to the point where I was happy with my vocal range, it’s not something that’s widely taught!
Q2: あなたの繰り出すスクリームのレンジはワイドで実に素晴らしいですね？
【JUSTINE】: ははは、ありがとう！ボーカル面で影響を受けたのは LAMB OF GOD の Randy と、DEFTONES の Chino ね。私は2人とも、とても多彩で才能のあるボーカリストだと思うの。
ボーカルレンジにかんしては、自分の満足いくレベルに達するまで何年もかかったわ。それでも思っているよりはワイドじゃないんだけどね！
Q3: Female fronted metal/hardcore band is increasing recently. But of course, there are still a few in the scene. When I had an interview with Larissa of Venom Prison, she said “I don’t like the term “female fronted” though because it creates some sort of sub-genre that is solely based on the gender of the front person disregarding the kind of music is being produced by bands that have female vocalists. I find it quite limiting and counterproductive.” What’s your thought about the term “Female fronted”?
【JUSTINE】: I agree with Larissa here! For example destiny’s child and employed to serve are both female fronted but if you listened to both on the fact that they’re female fronted you’re going to be very surprised at how different they sound haha! I get that people are stoked on it because it’s fairly rare and I’m sure it’s never ill intended but all the same it’s not a genre.
Q3: 女性メンバー擁するメタル/ハードコアバンドは徐々に増えてはいますが、まだまだその数は多くはありません。
先日 VENOM PRISON の Larissa にインタビューを行ったのですが、彼女は 「私は “フィーメールフロンテット” って言葉が好きじゃないの。だってこの言葉はただフロントを務める人物のジェンダーのみによって、サブジャンルのようなものを形成してしまうから。その女性ボーカルを擁するバンドたちが生み出す音楽関係なしにね。」 と語っていました。
【JUSTINE】: Larissa に同意するわ！例えば DESTINY’S CHILD も EMPLOYED TO SERVE もどちらもフィーメールフロンテットのグループだと言えるけれど、実際両者の音楽を聴けばその違いに驚くでしょ？！(笑)。
みんながフィーメールフロンテットという言葉に踊らされるのはわかるのよ。だって女性を擁するメタル/ハードコアバンドはとてもレアだからね。悪意がないのもわかっているの。だけど結局その言葉は音楽のジャンルではないのよ。
Q4: When I had an interview with Serena of Svalbard, she said “Personally, I have suffered so much sexism in the metal scene that I think the time is right to kick against it and make an outwardly feminist metal album. This album is my reply to anyone who makes negative comments to a girl onstage.”. What’s your perspective about her opinion and sexism in the extreme music scene or daily life?
【JUSTINE】: It certainly exists and I’ve experienced it a few times. At the end of the day it’s about educating people by simply existing and not standing for anyone trying to bring you down, people shouldn’t be judged or mistreated because of something they’re born with. I do feel like there is less of it happening gradually so hopefully it will disappear altogether over time.
Q4: SVALBARD の Serena は、「個人的に、私はメタルシーンで多くのセクシャルハラスメントに苦しんできたの。だから、それに立ち向かい表面上はフェミニストのメタルアルバムを作るべき時が来たと思ったのよ。このアルバムは、ステージに女の子が立つことにネガティブなコメントを寄せる人たちに対する私からの返答よ。「女性をメタルから追い出せ！」と言うような人たち、コンサートで女性にハラスメント行為を行う人たち。これは彼らに対する私からの恐れなき怒りの返答なの。」と語ってくれました。あなたはエクストリームミュージックシーンでそういったセクシズムを感じる場面がありますか？
【JUSTINE】: セクシズムは間違いなく存在するし、私も何度かは経験してきたわ。
結局のところ、生きていく中で何を学ぶかが重要で、自分を堕落させようとする人間に同調しないことが大事だと思うわ。

Q5: In “Eternal Forward Motion”, you sing about toxic social media in “Suspended in Emptiness”. Actually, Internet and SNS is inevitable in our daily life, but there are pros and cons, right?
【JUSTINE】: There are definitely pros to social media, but like with everything in life you need moderation and balance. Because social media is still so new some people don’t know how to use it or that it’s something that’s good sparingly. Parents don’t even know how to teach their kids about it yet, so it’s totally new territory!
The song is about not taking social media for face value and know that people all suffer and just because they’re posting about being in holiday, it doesn’t mean that person is better than you or is happier than you.
Q5: 最新作 “Eternal Forward Motion” では、”Suspended in Emptiness” のような楽曲で SNS の持つ中毒性について歌っていますね？
【JUSTINE】: もちろん、SNS にも良い点はあるのよ。だけど人生全てにおいても言えることなんだけど、程良さとバランスが必要なの。SNS はまだとても新しいものだから、使い方がわからなかったり、時には控えるべきだと考えられない人もいるわけ。両親にしたって、子供たちに使い方を教えることさえまだできないんだから。つまり完全に新しい領域なのよ！

Q6: Actually, I’ve had interview with lots of UK based metal/hardcore bands. Most of their music includes political assertion and Brexit. Is there any political statement in Employed to Serve?
【JUSTINE】: We’re not a political band, we definitely know the importance of politics and discussing it but at the end of the day it doesn’t motivate us as a band. If anything, we’re humanitarians who write about things we’ve experienced and what a lot of other people we love experience, whether that be mental illness all the way to the misuse of social media.
Q6: これまで多くの英国のメタル/ハードコアバンドにインタビューを行ってきましたが、印象的だったのは大半のバンドが政治的な主義主張や Brexit を歌詞に盛り込んでいたことです。
【JUSTINE】: 私たちは政治的なバンドではないの。もちろん、間違いなく政治や討論の重要性はわかっているんだけど、結局のところそれがバンドとしての私たちを動かすモチベーションにはならないのよ。

Q7: Like Code Orange, Vein, Harms Way, in the last few years, ambitious metallic hardcore or Nu metal revival is kind of trend of extreme music scene. Do you think you are involved in that movement?
【JUSTINE】: We certainly get associated with those bands, and what great company to be in! We’ve always had that sound due to growing up (like those other bands) on bands like slipknot, nine inch nails, Fear Factory and Korn, like with everything in life music comes in full circle and we happen to be a part of it.
Q7: 近年、CODE ORANGE, VEIN, HARMS WAY といった野心的なメタリックハードコア、Nu-metal リバイバルの波が押し寄せています。あなたたちはそのムーブメントに関与していると思いますか？
【JUSTINE】: 間違いなく、私たちは彼らとかかわりがあると思っているわ。彼らの仲間になれるなんて素晴らしいじゃない！そういった他のバンドと同じように、私たちはいつだって SLIPKNOT, NINE INCH NAILS, FEAR FACTORY, KORN みたいな聴いて育ったバンドのサウンドを基盤にしているのよ。

Q8: Also, Like Rolo Tomassi, Venom Prison, Svalbard, Ithaca, Conjurer, and you, UK has been producing lots of amazing & diverse new bands recently. Maybe, Holy Roar is kind of key to the movement. Do you feel the era of new wave of British extreme music are coming?
【JUSTINE】: We are truly living in an exciting time for heavy music and Holy Roar tries it’s best to act as a vessel to help grow and spread that. Everyday a new awesome band seems to appear and it’s great for me as a music fan as well as a band member/label manager.
Q8: ROLO TOMASSI, SVALBARD, CONJURER など、UK にはあなたがマネージャーを務める Holy Roar が牽引する新たなエクストリームミュージックの波が到来しているように思えます。
【JUSTINE】: 私たちは本当にヘヴィーな音楽にとってエキサイティングな時代に生きているわね。Holy Roar はそのムーブメントを育て、拡散する最高の “入れ物” であろうとしているのよ。
毎日のように素晴らしいバンドが現れているように思えるし、それはバンドのメンバーでレーベルのマネージャーという立場でも、1ファンとしても最高のことなのよ。
