EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH MARCO MINNEMANN OF THE ARISTOCRATS !!

“All I Can Say In Retrospect Is That We Had a Great Chemistry And I Guess It Shows And After All I’m Still In Touch With DT And Collaborate With Jordan On Many Projects And Also Was Planning To Do Something With John Petrucci For a While. I Was Just Personally The Right Fit. I Listened To Completely Different Kind Of Music And Never Heard DT Songs Or Owned Their Albums. That Was The Biggest Deal For Them.”

DISC REVIEW “YOU KNOW WHAT…?”

「”You Know What…?”
Guthrie Govan, Bryan Beller, Marco Minnemann。
Marco の言葉はその事実を裏付けますが、ただし “You Know What…?”

THE ARISTOCRATS “YOU KNOW WHAT…?” : 10/10

INTERVIEW WITH MARCO MINNEMANN

Q1: Hi, Marco! First of all, lot’s of Japanese fans loves to see your T-shirts collections, haha. Like Junji Ito, PonPonPon, it seems you are interested in Japanese sub-culture, right? Where did you get these T-shirts?

【MARCO】: Thank you, and yes, I love Japanese culture and some of my best friends are from Japan. I really like the beauty and uniqueness in Japanese art. Especially Junji Ito themes are mesmerizing and leave a lot of things to imagination. It’s surreal and beautiful.

Q2: When I had interview with Jordan Rudess, he said “We have done 2 albums together with Tony Levin (the LMR albums) which are really cool instrumental albums! When I thought about the music I wanted to write for this album and the parts that are completely over the top crazy rhythmic prog I thought that Marco would be the guy to do it!!!”. It seems you two are really connected musically, right? How was the collaboration with Jordan on “Wired for Madness”?

【MARCO】: Yes, Jordan and I are longtime friends and musical parthers. It’s always fun to work with him and the musical chemistry between us leads always to new adventures. The piece I played on Wired For Madness was a 23+ mins piece and contains a lot of parts and changes.
I’ve recorded it at home….. part by part. It’s a luxury having your music studio at home and being able to operate right from the source. That way allows me to play complex parts and record them until I’m happy, without having to wait for an engineer to punch me in and out.

Q3: Regarding Jordan, I wanted to see you join Dream Theater at that time. I mean, you are drummer but also composer, multi-instrumental player, so If you had joined in the band, maybe something different would’ve happen in Dream Theater, I think. Looking back now, what’s the audition to you?

【MARCO】: Oh, that was almost 10 years ago…. it’s so far away in the past. All I can say in retrospect is that we had a great chemistry and I guess it shows and after all I’m still in touch with DT and collaborate with Jordan on many projects and also was planning to do something with John Petrucci for a while. I was just personally the right fit. I listened to completely different kind of music and never heard DT songs or owned their albums. That was the biggest deal for them. They wanted someone in the band who is ultimately dedicated and would make time for the band whenever necessary. Makes all sense.

Q4: Also, it seems a collaboration with Alex Lifeson is the coolest thing to you, right? Of course, he joined your solo record “Borrego” in 2017. But what was co-writing experience with legendary Alex for you? Do you want to continue the project?

【MARCO】: yes, Alex Lifeson is a big influence and I love working with him. He has been played on 4 songs on my album Borrego and it was an amazing musical energy that we’ve created.
We then continued working together on an 8+ mins song called Lovers Calling, which is available as a very limited 12” Vinyl Picture Disc.
The song takes you on a journey I believe and came out really deep and meaningful. It also features the amazing Mohini Dey on Bass and Maiah Wynne On Vocals. For the ones didn’t get a copy of the Picture Disc: The songs will also be released on my forthcoming album called My Sister.

Q5: OK, let’s talk about The Aristocrats. “You Know What?”…very wired title & wired artwork, right? what’s the meaning behind that?

【MARCO】: hah, that’s exactly how it was intended to be.
I came up with that title, because it was a running joke between Guthrie, Bryan and I. During our recordings for our first album a few years back, I was standing in a lunch line in front of the recording studio and the people in front of me couldn’t make up their minds about what to order. It was taking so long that after that experience I went back to the recording room and said to my band mates in a very angry German inflection that I was displeased with the people in line and wanted to tell them : “You Know What? …. F*** you all”!
We all laughed about it and became a thing.
And then Hajo Müller made these cool sketches describing certain scenes that we thought could be appropriate for that term. Hahahaha.

Q5: では THE ARISTOCRATS の最新作 “You Know What…?”

「ちょっと聞いてくれ!(You Know What?)

Q6: The Aristocrats is “democracy of musicianship” where each album is a perfectly divisible-by-three nine songs, and each band member writes three of the nine. And that contrast is perfect in “You Know What?”! In your perspective, what’s the difference each three members about composing?

【MARCO】: we all write differently in styles, but for each other when it comes to The Aristocrats.
But the difference would probably be: 1. Guthrie writes more from a perspective to give us all lots of freedom on our individual instruments. 2. Bryan comes will very detailed arrangements for the parts and sounds. 3. I like to not shy away from layering and orchestrating parts. So some of the songs are sometimes difficult to translate in a live setting as a trio. But we’ll do our best. Hehe.

Q6: THE ARISTOCRATS

Q7: I think Marco-Bryan is the best rhythm team in the world. What do you like the combination with Bryan? What’s the important point, when you choose bass player?

【MARCO】: aww, thank you so much. Well, we’ve known each other for quite some time and meanwhile have this sometimes almost telepathic chemistry. We sometimes hit the same fills or accents together and leave space for each other whenever needed.
I think for a bass player it’s very important to have a solid foundation of groove, glue things together and have a nice well rounded bass tone.

Q8: It seems you are making new solo record “My Sister”. Could you tell us about the record as much as you can?

【MARCO】: thank you, yes. My Sister has a triple meaning: 1. I was seeing once a girl and then after started seeing her sister. Hahahaha. Sorry.
2. There’s an actually quite famous person who shall go nameless, hahaha, who always said that I was like a brother she never had. But then she kissed me. Hahaha. That was weird but funny. This scene is described in the title song My Sister.
3. I had a half sister, who passed away many years ago. And finally I was able to write a song about her called A New Body For Your Soul. That was very satisfying for me and meant closure.
But overall I was writing about the rural areas in Southern California where I explored and experienced many sad but also beautiful stories about people and their lives. Especially in the little towns I found a lot of sadness or sad stories about broken families and drug abuse. And I wrote many of these stories down and wanted to give these people hope.
Especially the songs Arrogance, Start Again and White Sheets (this one is about my stay in Bangladesh) have a very deep meaning for me. I’m also very pleased to have wonderful special guests Alex Lifeson and dUg Pinnick with me on this 2 CD set.

それで遂に彼女についての楽曲 “A New Body For Your Soul” を書くことができたんだ。
