NEW DISC REVIEW + INTERVIEW 【GREEN CARNATION : LEAVES OF YESTERYEAR】

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH KJETIL NORDHUS OF GREEN CARNATION !!

“In Some Ways We Are a “Child” Of that Norwegian Black Metal Era. Through The Years, Many Of Those Early Black Metal Bands Have Changed Quite a Lot, Developing Their Music And Bringing In Other Influences.”

DISC REVIEW “LEAVES OF YESTERYEAR”

「”Light of Day, Day of Darkness”
Light of Day, Day of Darkness” の大半かプログレッシブに属するなんて誰もが言えないだろう。
残りの2曲は “My Dark Reflections of Life and Death” の再録と BLACK SABBATH “Solitude” のカバー。

GREEN CARNATION “LEAVES OF YESTERYEAR” : 9.9/10

INTERVIEW WITH KJETIL NORDHUS

Q1: First of all, it’s really hard time now due to corona virus, especially musical industry. As a musician, and as a person, how do you spend your corona crisis days? What’s your thoughts on the current global situation?

【KJETIL】: When this first hit us, nobody really understood the level in which this would actually influence our lives, and to a certain degree I still think that is the case. This is not specific for musicians, because I think everybody is facing many of the same challenges, but for us it is the uncertainty which is the most challenging. We are not sure when it is ok to get back to “normal”, which in many ways puts everything on hold. Personally I am healthy, and have been able to adjust my life to this new situation in a better way than I thought I would. My days are quite the same, home office during daytime, and working with the band in the evenings. Plus I try to have a long walk in the woods or by the sea every day to help me not going insane.

Q2: I love Trail of Tears records you were involved in. And of course, Tchort played in Emperor. Definitely, there were incredible metal scene in Norway at that time. Do you think Green Carnation born from revolutionary Norwegian Black metal community somehow?

【KJETIL】: There are some obvious links in personell from Green Carnation and back to the black metal community, and not only Emperor, but In The Woods, Satyricon and Einherjer too. So in some ways we are a “child” of that era. Through the years, many of those early black metal bands have changed quite a lot, developing their music and bringing in other influences. For example new fans of Ulver will probably be quite shocked with listening to their very first albums. We have, of course, also been a band that has been experimental with it comes to genres and influences. Maybe it is a sign of something maturing, and in that sense we are still in good company with many other great Norwegian bands.

Q3: Your first Green Carnation record “Light of Day, Day of Darkness” was one of my favourite at that time. It was really revolutionary record, you know, It is composed of a single 60-minute track and combined many different non-metal instruments like sitar and saxophone, right? Looking back now, what was the record to you?

【KJETIL】: Light of Day, Day of Darkness is still a very special album for all the members of the band, and of course for many people around the world too. This was actually my very first album as a singer. Tchort contacted me a few months before the recording and asked me if I would be interested in joining the band, said it was an ambitious album project, but I had absolutely no idea then how stupidly ambitious it actually was. That album “has it all” in many ways, it was an overdose of creativity, and luckily we managed to put it all together so it can be seen on as one song, and not just a long list of musical themes.

Q3: あなたが初めて GREEN CARNATION に参加した “Light of Day, Day of Darkness” は革命的なレコードでしたね。

【KJETIL】: “Light of Day, Day of Darkness”

Q4: Green Carnation has been labeled as prog metal, but you’ve mixed and moved toward folk, gothic, doom elements and created original soundscape. Did you think you were “prog” at that time?

【KJETIL】: Although we, as a band, has never been too interested in the name of the genres we work within (for us, the mood and atmosphere are the most important elements), nobody can say that Light of Day, Day of Darkness in so many was is a progressive album. I still think we have a lot of groggy elements in our music, heavy elements, doomy elements and much more. But I think the combination of it all actually is the thing that makes our music sound like Green Carnation.

Q4: GREEN CARNATION

Light of Day, Day of Darkness” の大半がプログレッシブに属するなんて誰も言えないだろう。

Q5: Your first albums in 14 years, “Leaves of Yesteryear” has released. 14 years! Why did it take so long to release a new album after the disbanded?

【KJETIL】: Most importantly, we were gone for most part of 10 years. We did get back together for one concert in 2014, and it was that experience which inspired us to do our big comeback year in 2016. It wasn’t before 2017 that we decided to try and make new music, and this album took us around two years to finish. Why? Because this needed to be exactly the right album for us to release after 14 years. It needed to include the right elements, and not least, it needed to be very, very good. It wouldn’t make too much sense to release something after such a long time without it being the maximum of what we could do.

Q5: “Leaves of Yesteryear”

Q6: The title “Leaves of Yesteryear” reminds me kind of “return to roots” or “revisiting the past”. Revisiting “My Dark Reflections of Life and Death” and covering Black Sabbath’s “Solitude” seem to prove it, do you agree that?

【KJETIL】: One of the most important thing for us with this album, was to bring in all the best sides of Green Carnation in one album. Our first period saw us experimenting a lot through 5 albums, but on all of the albums there were “typical Green Carnation moments”. And having let those elements mature through 10-15 years, and with us having developed a human beings and musicians in the same period, it was all about to get the perfect mix, and wrap it into something that could represent Green Carnation anno 2020 in a perfect way.

Q7: When I listen to “Leaves of Yesteryear”, I feel some coincidental synchronicity with Enslaved from the same country. You two become more epic, more melodic, and more progressive than your black/death metal early days. Both of vocalists are sometimes really ethereal. Do you feel empathy with them?

【KJETIL】: Yes, very much. They are good friends of mine, and I respect their art a lot. They have too developed a lot as a band, and for me, Enslaved is a band that is just getting better and better, more and more interesting.

Q8: In this 14 years, some black, doom, prog metal bands took metal to another realm, like Deafheaven, Pallbearer, Alcest, Yob, Gojira. I feel you are the pioneer of such a modern metal movement, right? What’s your perspective about their diversity?

【KJETIL】: Those are huge words, but many of the bands you mention are among my favourites the last few years. Whether or not we are pioneers or not is not up to us to decide, but I like the idea of bands mutually inspiring each other.
