「イギリスのスラッシュ・シーンは盛り上がるのが遅くて、アメリカやドイツのようなインパクトはなかったと思う。XENTRIX も同様に現れるのが遅かったから、シーンの興隆の助けにはならなかった。
つまり、レコード会社はイギリスのバンドに投資する前に、アメリカのバンドがどれだけ大きくなれるのか見たかったんだと思う。そして、彼らが僕らのようなバンドを欲しがった時には、もうシーンは次に向けて動き出していたんだ」
XENTRIX ほど “徒花” という言葉が似合うスラッシュの英雄はいないでしょう。生まれた場所や時間さえ違っていれば、今ごろは華々しいレジェンドと肩を並べる存在であったかもしれません。80年代半ばに英国で誕生した XENTRIX はまさに遅れてきたスラッシュ・エキセントリック。バンドの大作 “For Whose Advantage?” が、スラッシュの当たり年 1990年に発売されたのも不運だったのでしょうか。”Rust in Peace” ほどテクニカルではなく、”Twisted into Form” ほど熱くもなく、”Spectrum of Death” ほど凶暴でもなく、”By Inheritance” ほど知的でもなく、”Slaughter in the Vatican” ほど革命的ではありませんでしたが、それでも、”For Whose Advantage?” はメタルの伝統と野望を宿した凶暴なリフの刃でまっすぐ頸動脈に向かってきます。
「ベイエリアのバンドは古いバンドよりもモダンでエキサイティングな感じがしたけど、僕たちは自分たちのメタルのルーツも残したかった。だから、XENTRIX ではその二つの融合を聴くことができると思う。いつも言っていることだけど、僕らはメタルに重点を置いたスラッシュ・メタル・バンドなんだ」
一度は “徒花” として埋葬される運命にあった XENTRIX ですが、墓所の石棺は半ば強引に内側からこじ開けられることになります。”Bury The Pain”。痛みとともに葬られていた才能と野心は、2019年に再度世界へと解き放たれました。バンドの顔であったシンガー Chris Astley こそ欠いていますが、Jay Walsh はその穴を埋めてあまりある逸材。
今振り返ってみると、当時の英国スラッシュ勢、ACID REIGN にしろ、ONSLAUGHT にしろ、SABBAT にしろ、何かしら独特の “エグ味” “異端感” を伴っていたような気がします。その “エグ味” を世界が珍重する前に、ムーブメント自体が終焉してしまった。だからこそ、XENTRIX は再び地上に這い出でる必要があったのです。

復活第二弾となる “Seven Words” は、文字通りスラッシュ・メタルの “7つの系譜” を融合させたものと言えるのかもしれませんね。XENTRIX 初期の作品には、ベイエリアの躍動を受け継ぎながらも、ブリティッシュ・ハードの伝統と、CORONER のような暗知的な色合いを備えていました。そうした下地に、 初期の SEPULTURA を思わせるクランチーな圧迫感、さらにメロディアスなリフと高揚感のあるギターでメタル世界の各階層へとアピールしながら、確実に音の進化を刻んでいるのです。
“Seven Words” というリフの迷宮と”Anything but the Truth”” のシンプル・イズ・ベストが交互に現れるリフ・ダイナミズムもアルバムの魅力。そもそもメロディックな色合いは XENTRIX の本分ではないにもかかわらず、巨大なコーラスが破砕的なギタリズムと衝撃的にキャッチーな歌心をさながら溶かして融合させるスラッシュとメタルのハンダ付けはあまりに印象的でエネルギッシュ。そうして彼らは、テクニカルで好戦的でメロディックなヘヴィ・メタルの理想像を老獪に描き出すのです。
今回弊誌では、バンドの心臓 Kristian Havard にインタビューを行うことができました。「スラッシュ・メタルは年齢と経験を重ねる必要があるのかもしれないよな。若いバンドは、経験豊富で何度かバンドを組んだことがある人とは違った方法で一緒に演奏するからな」

INTERVIEW WITH KRISTIAN HAVARD
Q1: Could you start by telling us what you think of the 2019 visit to Japan? What did you like about Japan?
【KRISTIAN】: Japan was amazing for us, although we only got to see a tiny bit of Tokyo we still loved the cultural differences, the food and the enthusiasm of the Japanese fans. Everyone was really nice and helpful which made our stay so much nicer. We were luck to have a Japanese friend Naruhiko Mochida who came up to Tokyo for the weekend so we had a guide and translator which really helped.
Q1: まずは、2019年に行った日本公演の感想から聞かせていただけますか？
【KRISTIAN】: 日本は僕たちにとって素晴らしい国だったよ。東京はほんの少ししか見ることができなかったけど、文化の違い、食べ物、そして日本のファンの熱意がとても好きになったね。みんな本当に親切でフレンドリーだったから、滞在がとても楽しかったんだよ。幸運なことに、日本人の持田成彦さんが週末に東京に来て、ガイドと通訳をしてくれたから本当に助かったんだ。
Q2: You are a band with a long history, so tell us about when the band started. I think the NWOBHM movement was coming to an end in the UK at that time, so why did you decide to play thrash metal, which started in the US? What attracted you to it?
【KRISTIAN】: When we started this band we were playing Iron Maiden and Judas Priest type material but we always wanted a heavier sound and a more intense musical style, so when we heard the bay area sound we instantly gravitated towards it. It felt more modern and exciting than the older bands but we still wanted to have an element of our metal roots and I think you can hear that in Xentrix. I always say we are a Thrash Metal band with the emphasis on metal.
Q2: XENTRIX には長い歴史がありますが、バンドを始めた頃はちょうど NWOBHM のムーブメントが終焉を迎えたころでしたね？スラッシュ・メタルに魅入られたのはなぜだったんですか？
【KRISTIAN】: このバンドを始めた頃は IRON MAIDEN や JUDAS PRIEST のような曲を演奏していたんだけど、もっとヘヴィなサウンドやもっと激しい音楽スタイルを常に求めていた。だからベイエリアのサウンドを聞いた時、即座に惹き込まれたんだよね。
ベイエリアのバンドは古いバンドよりもモダンでエキサイティングな感じがしたけど、僕たちは自分たちのメタルのルーツも残したかった。だから、XENTRIX ではその二つの融合を聴くことができると思う。いつも言っていることだけど、僕らはメタルに重点を置いたスラッシュ・メタル・バンドなんだ。
Q3: I have the impression that the British thrash scene was slower to get going than in Germany or Japan. What actually happened? Were bands like The Almighty like-minded for you?
【KRISTIAN】: I think the British thrash scene was slow to get going and didn’t have the impact of the Americans or the Germans and Xentrix were late to it also, which didn’t help. I think the record companies wanted to see how big the American bands could get before they would invest in any of the UK acts and then by the time they wanted those bands the scene was on the move.

【KRISTIAN】: イギリスのスラッシュ・シーンは盛り上がるのが遅くて、アメリカやドイツのようなインパクトはなかったと思う。XENTRIX も同様に現れるのが遅かったから、シーンの興隆の助けにはならなかった。

Q4: Your Trash felt like it had something in common with the Bay Area, especially TESTAMENT. Were they in fact your heroes?
【KRISTIAN】: We loved all those Bay Area bands, Testament, Vio-Lence, Exodus and Forbidden (to name just a few) But we never set out to be like them, we wanted to bring our own flavour to the metal pot.
Q4: XENTRIX の音楽は、ベイエリアの中でも特に TESTAMENT の影響を強く感じますね。実際、彼らを目指していた部分もあるんですか？
【KRISTIAN】: 僕たちはベイエリアのバンド、TESTAMENT, VIO-LENCE, EXODUS, FORBIDDEN（これでも少し挙げただけだけど）が大好きだったんだ。
でも、彼らのようになろうとしたわけではなく、メタルという鍋に自分たちの味を持ち込みたかったんだよな。
Q5: Your first release in 23 years in 2019, “Bury the Pain”, was a huge success! You’ve been in and out of action, why did you decide to make a comeback album at that time? Were you surprised by the response?
【KRISTIAN】: Yes it was a nice surprise that people wanted to hear what the band sounded like now and not just the 30 year old stuff. We originally said that we would just do shows when we first got back together but it became an itch that needed to be scratched so I started to write new material that became ‘Bury The Pain’
Q5: 2019年にリリースした23年ぶりの復活作 “Bury the Pain” は大好評でしたね！ XENTRIX は活動したりしなかったりを続けていましたが、なぜあの時完全復活を決めたんですか？
【KRISTIAN】: そうだね！30年前の作品だけでなく、今のバンドサウンドを聴きたいという声があったのは嬉しい驚きだったよ。
当初、再結成はライブをやるだけだと言っていたんだけど、活動や音楽が痒いところに手が届くような状態になったので、新しい曲を書き始めたら “Bury The Pain” になったんだよな。
Q6: Long-standing fans may miss Chris Astley in the current line-up, right? Why is Xentrix now moving forward with Jay?
【KRISTIAN】: Chris just decided that he didn’t want to do music anymore and stepped away from the band. Saying that… we’ve recently just come back the MTV Headbanger Ball Tour in Europe and Jay’s wife was expecting a baby so he suggested asking Chris to step in for the dates, which he did and performed flawlessly.
Q6: Chris Astley の不在を残念に思う長年のファンもいるでしょうね？
【KRISTIAN】: Chris はもう音楽をやりたくないと思い、バンドから離れたんだ…とはいえ、最近ヨーロッパ MTV Headbanger Ball ツアーが始まったばかりで、でも Jay の奥さんが出産を控えていたから、Chris にその日程の代役を依頼したんだよ。彼は完璧にこなしてくれたね。
Q7: Looking at the artwork, it seems to me that you are dealing with the dark issues that the world has faced in the last few years: war and pandemics. How about that?
【KRISTIAN】: The artwork is the brainchild of Dan Goldsworthy who also did ‘Bury the Pain’. After we had decided on the album title we sent him the lyrics to Seven Words the song and a few ideas that we already had and he came up with artwork that we have on the record. Dan is a great artist and works very quickly and has an amazing imagination.
Q7: 最新作 “Seven Words” のアートワークは、近年の世界を覆う闇、戦争やパンデミックを想起させますね？
【KRISTIAN】: アートワークは “Bury the Pain” を手がけた Dan Goldsworthy の発案によるもの。アルバム・タイトルが決まった後、彼に “Seven Words” の歌詞と既に持っていたいくつかのアイデアを送ったところ、レコードになったアートワークを考えてくれたんだ。
Dan は素晴らしいアーティストで、仕事がとても早く、素晴らしい想像力を持っているんだよ。
Q8: I think the great thing about Seven Words is that thrash metal is evolving here, in 2022!! In fact, all the old soldiers of thrash metal that have made a comeback in the last few years are putting out such great work, I think. On the other hand, there is one aspect of thrash metal that the younger generation of thrash metal has not really grown up, would you agree?
【KRISTIAN】: I think I know what you mean but it could be down to age and experience. When you’re a younger band you play together in a different way than when you’ve been around the block a few times. I think there are some great younger thrash bands out there Evile, Crisix, Angelus Apatrida and our friends Shrapnel.
Q8: “Seven Words” はスラッシュ・メタルが未だに進化可能であることを証明していますね？
ここ数年、スラッシュの古強者たちが良作を量産していますが、一方で、若い芽が育っていないという指摘もあります。
【KRISTIAN】: 言いたいことはわかるんだけど、スラッシュ・メタルは年齢と経験を重ねる必要があるのかもしれないよな。若いバンドは、経験豊富で何度かバンドを組んだことがある人とは違った方法で一緒に演奏するからな。
とはいえ、EVILE, CRISIX, ANGELUS APATRIDA, そして僕らの友達の SHRAPNEL など、素晴らしい若手スラッシュ・バンドも登場していると思うよ。
