NEW DISC REVIEW + INTERVIEW 【TRITOP : RISE OF KASSANDRA】

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH TRITOP !!

“This Is The Dream Of My Life And Sincerely I Don’t Care About Money Or Fame. I Am Aware Of Today’s Prog Situation But My Passion For Music And Prog Helps Me a Lot To Overcome The Difficulties.”

DISC REVIEW “RISE OF KASSANDRA”

DREAM THEATER, THE FLOWER KINGS, KAIPA, ANGLAGARD, HAKEN

TRITOP “RISE OF KASSANDRA” : 9.9/10

INTERVIEW WITH TRITOP

Q1: First of all, what kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?

【IVO】: Hi Sin, thank you so much for this opportunity!
As a child I had a tape containing “Discipline – King Crimson” and “Ghost In The Machine – Police”. I Think, without realizing it, I got used to these particular sounds (odd time signatures, altered chords and more).
Since my father is a musician, I always had to deal with music so much. At the age of 7 I started playing with him and he taught me a lot of things about the music that he loved (mainly hard rock and prog rock from the 70s): Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Elp, King Crimson, Genesis, Van Der Graaf Generator, Gentle Giant and Yes.So as a kid I listened exclusively to those bands mentioned above… I was really lucky!

子供の頃は、KING CRIMSON の “Discipline” と THE POLICE の”Ghost In The Machine” が入ったテープを持っていたんだ。
DEEP PURPLE, LED ZEPPELIN, BLACK SABBATH, ELP.

Q2: Many of the prog giants are old and have passed away. Meanwhile, the world is dominated by the instant culture of social networking and clippings, and few young people will bother to take the time and trouble to pursue a grand and complex prog. What was it that drove you guys to the prog in such a situation?

【IVO】: The burning desire to imitate my idols has been strengthened by the new progressive bands that I discovered when I was growing up such as: Dream Theater, Flower Kings, Kaipa, Anglagard, Haken.
At night I dreamed often of playing with The Flower Kings, and I’m not joking!
Following their example I focused on my goals! This is the dream of my life and sincerely I don’t care about money or fame. I am aware of today situation but my passion for music and prog helps me a lot to overcome the difficulties. Moreover, the aim of preserving the cultural heritage that “golden age” prog has left us pushes me to share my ideas, born and developing , naturally, following in the footsteps of the bands that have made the history of prog, adding inventiveness and foresight towards musical modernity
I was also lucky to find band members that share the passion for progressive rock, and this is not taken for granted!

DREAM THEATER, THE FLOWER KINGS, KAIPA, ANGLAGARD, HAKEN

Q3: Italy is famous for great prog rock giants like PFM, New Trolls, Banco, I Pooh, Arti, etc. Were they an inspiration for you guys?

【IVO】: Without a doubt, the Masters of Italian Prog have influenced our music a lot! We feel very lucky to have listened in depth the Italian Prog, which left us an immense cultural and musical heritage. Some of us had the chance to know, and sometimes interact, with some of those great musicians like Francesco Di Giacomo (Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso), or Giacomo Anselmi (Goblin Rebirth – Barock Project). I personally had the chance to study with Fabio Moresco (Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso – La Metamorfosi) and I can assure you that this kind of experiences changes your musical life.
I also remember, at the age of 17, I played for a tribute band of Emerson, Lake & Palmer and we managed to play as opening for La Metamorfosi: no need to tell you that, when I was told, I burst out crying.

PFM, NEW TROLLS, BANCO, I POOH, ARTI

Q4: Still, “Rise of Kassandra” is a great album! Of course, it is rooted in epic progressive rock, but it also has a lot of metallic elements. Are you guys comfortable with comparisons to, say, Dream Theater?

【IVO】: Of course we are comfortable with this kind of comparison, because these “Prog Giants” inspired us a lot and made us dream with their masterpieces; but, obviously, we dare not compare in terms of greatness! We listen and refer not only to Dream Theater but also Haken, Symphony X and Opeth in some ways.
Not for nothing, the synth solo in “The Sacred Law Of Retribution” is a special tribute to Octavarium!
Everyone in the band, especially our guitar player Francesco Caponera (The Metal Head ) had the chance to play in other metal bands and, for sure, those experiences influenced our style a lot. Actually, now that you bring it up, guitars in the album are really heavy.

Q5: I don’t think many bands play mellotron with a heavy sound, but your use of mellotron is very innovative, right?

【IVO】: Yeah… We strongly wanted the mellotron since it is one of the characteristic instruments of 70’s prog… ok no…. the mellotronon is THE prog instrument! Seriously, we certainly tried to bring the “old” instruments like mellotron and hammond into a certainly more modern context in terms of recording, mixing and mastering, and I think we achieved a good result and compromise. You can ask to our Keyboard player, Pierfrancesco Di pofi: he went crazy to satisfy every request I had about every sound… probably he will need another pair of hands to play live all that stuff!

Q6: What I particularly like about “Rise of Kassandra” is the melody. Your gorgeous, catchy melody reminded me of Styx, helped by your singing ability. How about that?

【MATTIA】: Hi there Sin, thanks for inviting us!
I think that the melody is one of the most important features if not the most important feature in a song. The goal was to create nice and catchy melodies while having complex harmonies and rhythms below. Most of the vocal lines came by themselves just by hearing a few times the songs without vocals, some of them were more difficult to create but after a while we found the right ones. As you said bands like Styx but also Genesis, Dream Theater and many others always created great melodies with the aim to make the listening of the songs more easy. I think that this contrast is what makes this kind of music so interesting and I’m really happy to know that you enjoyed our work for what concerns the vocal lines.

Q7: Speaking of melodies, Moon Safari, Moron Police, and Italy’s Barock Project are still young but very popular in Japan. They are a progressive band, but they value melody very much. You guys seem to have a lot in common, would you agree?

【JACOPO】: Hi Sin, thank you, we’re really excited to do this interview!
Of course those that you mentioned are young, talented bands, and, obviously we have in common the value of melody. Melody, in some ways, is often the “culmination” of our music, and, like Mattia said before, sometimes is not easy to find the right ones with those “diabolical harmonies”; but, I can assure you that it is extremely fun to combine them with the rest of the music. Specifically speaking of Barock Project, I personally know Giacomo Anselmi, the guitarist that played with them and also still playing with Goblin Rebirth. It is an honor to be associated with such important musical names, given how I feel about about Mr. Anselmi. I can assure you that Giacomo is one of the best player that I know, a great teacher and a wonderful human being!

Q8: It’s rare these days to find a band that makes a 48-minute album with four songs, but what themes are you guys dealing with on this epic album?

【IACOPO】: Hi sin! Thanks for your questions!
We started writing the lyrics way before all the songs were completed, so in a way the themes of the album evolved along side the music itself.
Back when the project started, we were deep diving into Dante Alighieri’s “Divina Commedia” and we were naturally inclined to create a text rich in visual allegories. We also wanted to take the listener through a voyage into a metaphorical fantasy world.
In the title track, “Rise of Kassandra”, we’re trying to paint a picture of a world set to zero by a cosmic force majeure. In the second song, “Delighted Insanity”, we look at people making their way up from the shadows of chaos and anarchy. In “Island of Servitude”, we see how a raw society naturally evolves into an oppressive hierarchy. Finally, in “The Sacred Law of Retribution”, we follow the path of the person who is punished for breaking through this cycle and ends up becoming the same entity that took humanity back to square one.
As I’m writing this, I realize that it might as well be the plot of a sci-fi movie, which I don’t mind at all!
