人生で最も重要かつ困難なこと。もしかしたらそれは、自分の居場所を見つけることかもしれません。ノルウェーを拠点とする “デス・ポップ” バンド BLOOD COMMAND は、自らも彷徨い、傷つき続けた過去を振り払い、幸せな居場所を見つけることの大切さを音楽に込めています。
オーストラリアで PAGAN というバンドに人生をかけていたボーカリスト Nikki Brumen は、バンドの解散、親の死、そして恋人との別れによって心に大きな傷を負っていました。そんな時、遠く離れた地球の反対側、ノルウェーから一通のメールが届きます。
「フェイスブックだったと思うけど、ようやく彼女と連絡が取れた。”君に提案がある” と言うと、彼女は即座に “イエス” と答えたんだ。人生で最も幸せな瞬間だったね。彼女は今ではノルウェーに住んでいて、僕たちは一緒にプレイしたり、出かけたりしている。とても幸せだよ」
メールの送り主は Yngve Andersen。BLOOD COMMAND の中心人物。Yngve は Yngve で、2度目のボーカルの脱退に心が折れかけていました。音楽性はもちろん、互いに人生を取り戻す、回復しようとするもの同士、即座に意気投合。Nikki はすぐにスーツケースに荷物を詰め込んで、名前の発音もできない新たな友人の故郷、ノルウェーへと渡りました。自分の居場所は自分で見つける。彼らの場合、その媒介者が、メタルやハードコア・パンクだったのです。
「僕はノルウェーの極端なキリスト教福音派の分派出身のカルトの子供で、その全てが好きだったんだ。そのカルトの教育は僕に音楽を教え、幼い頃から楽器に触れさせ、他の人たちと一緒に演奏することを考えさせてくれた。彼らの教育にとても感謝している。あと、僕が普通でないことに慣れていて、のけ者にされることに慣れているという事実にも。それ以来、僕はカルトに魅了されている。少人数で、自分たちだけが真実であり、他の人たちは、論理的ではないにせよ、みんな間違っていると確信している、強く美しい集団だ」
居場所という意味では、Yngve は自らが育ったカルト集団と BLOOD COMMAND、そしてメタルやハードコア・パンクを重ねて見ています。社会からはぐれたのけ者たちにも、いえ、のけ者だからこそ安心できる居場所は必要。一風変わった “デス・ポップ” というアウトローの音楽で、お揃いのアディダスに身を包み、同じ夢を見られるメンバーで強く美しく生きていく。”World Domination” という新たな作品で居場所を見つけた彼らを遮るものは、もうありません。
「シーンの門番たちを怒らせるためにこのバンドを始めたかったんだよ。ハードコアにポップなものを混ぜて、邪悪なミックスを作ろうとね。当時はそれが新しいことだったけど、今はそういうバンドがたくさんいる。僕自身はハードコア・キッズであり、ポップミュージックが大好きだ。好きなアーティストの一人は Belinda Carlisle だしね」
野蛮なメタリック・リフとシャーベットのような甘いポップ・メロディーが溶け合ったサウンド・スープ。実際、彼らの “居場所” であるそのサウンドや形式は愛すべきエキセントリックを貫いています。
グラインド・コアの尺に凝縮されたエクストリーム・メタルのクランチと幼きメロディーは、テクノ、エレクトリック・ポップ、そしてジギーなギャングスタ・ラップと共に溢れんばかりのメルティング・ポットで撹拌され、散漫にも思える設計図はいつしか酩酊のような聴き心地を醸し出していきます。そう、カルトにはカルトの “世界を支配する” 譲れない美学が存在するのです。
今回弊誌では、Yngve Andersen にインタビューを行うことができました。「メタルはカルトだよ。そして、カルトがメタルのように大きくなれば、それを宗教と呼ぶこともできる。だからね、メタルは宗教なんだよ。多くのはみ出し者やマニアといった信者たちにとって、安全な天国のようなもの。本当に美しいよ」 どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH YNGVE ANDERSEN
Q1: First of all, why did you in Norway invite Nikki, who was living in Australia, to join your band?
【YNGVE】: I had heard of Nikki because of my friend Canan from the swedish punkband Twin Pigs who showed me her old band and said «this girl should front Blood Command». I heard her and read an interview with her were she said all the right things. She said she was the lovechild of Dennis Lyxzen (Refused) and Karen-O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) which is one of my main inspirations for starting Blood Command so many years ago. She also had our release «Return Of The Arsonist» on some best of the year article she had in some magazine, so I knew she knew my band. Anyway I ofcourse didn’t think anymore of it cause she lived in australia and was in a band at the time. It was on the other side of the globe and she would never talk me. I didn’t knew her. Anyway some years later we got a problem with our previous singer and had to part ways. This was our second one so I was so over it. I thought «why not? I might as well give it a shot» And messaged Nikki on her instagram not really thinking I would get a reply. The days came and went and I thought maybe she just ignored my message from this stranger norwegian. I reached out on some other platform too in my desperation too. Facebook I think it was and I finally got through to her. I said «I have a proposition for you» and she instantly said yes. One of the happiest moments in my life. No she lives in norway and we are so happy playing and hanging out with each other.
Q1: まず、なぜノルウェー人のあなたが、オーストラリアに住んでいた Nikki をバンドに誘ったのですか？
【YNGVE】: スウェーデンのパンク・バンド、TWIN PIGS の友人Canan が Nikki の昔のバンドを見せてくれて、”この子は BLOOD COMMAND のフロントになるべきだ” と言っていたんだ。それで彼女の話を聞いたり、インタビューを読んだりしたんだけど、彼女は正しいことばかり言っていた。彼女は自分で、Dennis Lyxzen (Refused) と Karen-O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) の娘のようなものだと言っていたんだけど、まさにその2人は僕が何年も前に BLOOD COMMAND を始めた時のインスピレーションだったんだよ。彼女はまた、何かの雑誌の年間ベストの記事で、僕らのリリースした “Return Of The Arsonist” を紹介していたから、彼女が僕のバンドを知っていることも知っていた。
でもそれ以上のことは考えていなかったよ。彼女はオーストラリアに住んでいて、当時バンドをやっていたからね。地球の反対側だったし、彼女は僕と話すことはなかった。僕は彼女のことを知らなかったし。それから何年かして、僕たちは前のボーカルと問題が起きて、別れることになったんだ。これは2回目のことで、僕はもううんざりしていた。でも、”こんなことで止めるわけにはいかない” と思って、Nikki のインスタグラムにメッセージを送ったんだ。返事は期待していなかった。
数日が経ち、彼女はこの見知らぬノルウェー人からのメッセージを無視したのかもしれないと思ったよ。それで自暴自棄になった僕は、他のプラットフォームでも連絡を取ってみたんだ。フェイスブックだったと思うけど、ようやく彼女と連絡が取れた。”君に提案がある” と言うと、彼女は即座に “イエス” と答えたんだ。人生で最も幸せな瞬間だったね。彼女は今ではノルウェーに住んでいて、僕たちは一緒にプレイしたり、出かけたりしている。とても幸せだよ。
Q2: Nikki was heartbroken at the time over the breakup of Pagan and the loss of someone close to her, wasn’t she? Would you say that you, Blood Command, and metal helped to fill her heartache?
【YNGVE】: Yes it really did. Me too. I was also in a dark hole at the time, may not as dark as Nikki, but still dark for me. Im really sure our relationship have made us stronger than ever. She have helped me with a lot of issues at least and she says I’ve helped her a lot too. We have filled holes in each other so to speak. I really consider Nikki my best friend and I think she feels the same.
Q2: Nikki は当時、PAGAN の解散と親しい人の喪失に心を痛めていましたね？あなたや BLOOD COMMAND、そしてメタルが彼女の心の傷を埋める手助けをしたと言えますか？
【YNGVE】: ああ、本当にそうだったね。僕もだよ。僕も当時は暗い穴の中にいた。Nikki ほどではないかもしれないが、それでも僕にとっては暗い時代だった。僕らの関係が、僕らをこれまで以上に強くしてくれたのは確かだ。彼女は少なくとも多くの問題で僕を助けてくれたし、彼女も僕がたくさん助けてくれたと言っている。いわば、お互いの穴を埋めてきたんだ。僕は Nikki のことを親友だと思っているし、彼女もそう思っていると思う。
Q3: In fact, in this day and age of division, social networking, and pandemics, it is difficult to find one’s place in the world, and Nikki has found a new home with Blood Command. Isn’t heavy metal the perfect escape and refuge for these “outcasts”?
【YNGVE】: It is the perfect refuge for outcasts. it was for me. I’ve been an outsider all my life until I found punkrock. Punk rock saved my life. Now I have so many true friends and my life feels like a fairytale. I thank God every day for getting to do this. Nikki have definitely found her home in Blood Command. Nikki is born to be on stage and born to front Blood Command. We’re gonna keep doing this until we die and we feel so lucky that we get to do it. To see the freaks at our shows brings tears to our eyes.
Q3: 実際、分断、SNS、パンデミックの現代において、心からの自分の居場所を見つけるのは難しいですよね。ヘヴィ・メタルやハードコアは、こうした社会からの “はみ出し者” にとって完璧な逃避先であり、避難所ではないでしょうか？
【YNGVE】: そう、まさにはみ出し者にとっては完璧な避難所だ。パンク・ロックに出会うまで、僕はずっとアウトサイダーだった。パンク・ロックは僕の人生を救ってくれたんだ。今では本当の友達がたくさんいて、僕の人生はまるでおとぎ話のようだ。こんなことができるようになったことを、毎日神に感謝しているんだよ。

Q4: By the way, your music is wonderful!” You have been described as “Deathpop” etc., why did you decide to combine extreme and pop music, underground and mainstream?
【YNGVE】: Me and the drummer (Sigurd Haakaas) is from a hardcore punk background. Played in several hardcore punk bands, so we knew the strict laws that used to be there (luckily its not like that anymore) So we wanted to start this band to piss off the gatekeepers from that scene. Mix hardcore with over the top pop just to make an unholy mix. At the time that was something new, but now we see a tons of bands doing that. Me myself is a hardcore kid and a sucker for pop music. One of my favourite artists ever is Belinda Carlisle. Seems like our mix have worked tho as we feel Blood Command is kind of unique.
Q4: BLOOD COMMAND の音楽は “デスポップ” などと形容されていますが、なぜエクストリームとポップ、アンダーグラウンドとメインストリームを融合させようと思ったのですか？
【YNGVE】: 僕とドラマー（Sigurd Haakaas）はハードコア・パンクの出身なんだ。ハードコア・パンク・バンドで何度か演奏していたから、かつての厳しい掟を知っていた（幸い今はそんなことはない）。だから、そのシーンの門番たちを怒らせるためにこのバンドを始めたかったんだよ。
ハードコアにポップなものを混ぜて、邪悪なミックスを作ろうとね。当時はそれが新しいことだったけど、今はそういうバンドがたくさんいる。僕自身はハードコア・キッズであり、ポップミュージックが大好きだ。好きなアーティストの一人は Belinda Carlisle だしね。そういう意味で BLOOD COMMAND はユニークだと思うし、僕らのミックスはうまくいったと思う。
Q5: One of the characteristics of “World Domination” is the large number of songs and their short length. Today’s listeners are so used to TikTok and Instagram that their “attention spans” are said to be as short as 30 seconds or so, Were you aware of this change in listeners in your writing process?
【YNGVE】: We didn’t thought so much of that, but that have definitely been a bonus for us. We wrote those short songs because I am very inspirated by grind core and hardcore where short songs is a common trait. Its a perfect bonus that our songs can be used fully in tik tok videos and such. A lucky bonus we didn’t think of. It was never intentional and it doesn’t mean our next release is going to be like that.
Q5: “World Domination” の特徴のひとつは、曲数の多さとその短さです。現代のリスナーは TikTok やインスタグラムに慣れすぎていて、”注意力” “アテンション・スパン” が30秒程度と短いと言われていますが、こうしたリスナーの変化も意識して作曲したのでしょうか？
【YNGVE】: そのことはあまり考えていなかったけれど、でもそうした変化は間違いなく僕らにとってのボーナスだった。短い曲が多いグラインド・コアやハードコアにとてもインスパイアされたから、短い曲を書いたんだ。僕らの曲が TikTok のビデオなどでフルに使われるのは完璧なボーナスだよ。考えもしなかったラッキーなボーナスだ。決して意図的なものではないし、次のリリースがそうなるということでもないんだ。
Q6: “World Domination” is largely perceived as an album about cults. Cults, in a sense, are also a place where outcasts find themselves, right? In that sense, is there a part of you that can relate to them, even though you are doing music that is different from the norm?
【YNGVE】: Relate to cults? Yes. I am a cult kid from an extreme christian evangelical offshoot in norway and I loved every second of it. That upbringing thought me music, gave me access to instruments from a very young age and thought me to play with others. Im very thankful for that upbringing. Also the fact that I’m used to not being normal and used to being the outcast. Ive been fascinated by cults ever since. Its something strong and beautiful with a small group of people convinced that they have the only truth and that everyone else got it wrong though may not so logical.
Q6: “World Domination “はカルトについてのアルバムというイメージが強いです。カルトはある意味、追放された人々が自分自身を見つける場所でもありますよね。そういう意味で、普通とは違う音楽をやっているあなたたちは、カルトに共感できる部分があるんですか？
【YNGVE】: カルトとの関係？そうだよ。僕はノルウェーの極端なキリスト教福音派の分派出身のカルトの子供で、その全てが好きだったんだ。そのカルトの教育は僕に音楽を教え、幼い頃から楽器に触れさせ、他の人たちと一緒に演奏することを考えさせてくれた。彼らの教育にとても感謝している。あと、僕が普通でないことに慣れていて、のけ者にされることに慣れているという事実にも。

Q7: It’s a bit cultish that you guys are all wearing Adidas clothes, but most metal fans also wear metal T-shirts to gigs. Maybe metal is a cult in a way too?
【YNGVE】: Metal is a cult, but when cults grow as big as metal has you can start to call them religions and metal is definetly a religion for many ans a safe haven for so many freaks and outcasts. Its really beautiful. The adidas thing is an homage to my mother who hated all expensive brands except adidas which se thought was worth the money cause of quality. It also looks bad ass.
Q7: あなたたちがみんなアディダスの服を着ているのもちょっとカルトっぽいですよね。ほとんどのメタル・ファンもメタルTシャツを着てライブに行きます。メタルもある意味カルトなんですかね？
【YNGVE】: メタルはカルトだよ。そして、カルトがメタルのように大きくなれば、それを宗教と呼ぶこともできる。だからね、メタルは宗教なんだよ。多くのはみ出し者やマニアといった信者たちにとって、安全な天国のようなもの。本当に美しいよ。
アディダスを着ているのは、アディダス以外の高価なブランドを嫌っていた母へのオマージュなんだ。見た目もクールだしね。
Q8: You are a Norwegian band, but there used to be a black metal “cult” here called Inner Circle. How do you rate their violence, arson, murder and their music?
【YNGVE】: There are some cool songs and records from that scene. Like Immorals – Damned In Black, but most of all. These are spooky nerds with no real hardship born with a silver spoon in their mouths hating their parents too much. I think everything they did was lame. The burning of the churches; dumb. They’ll only build them up again using taxpayers money anyway. The murders: idiotic. Clearly some teens with some issues. And today those fucks are neo-nazis. And is it something I hate more than satanists its fucking nazis. And runes. I fucking hates runes and the nationalistic bullshit they represent. Fuck black metal!
Q8: あなたはノルウェーのバンドですが、かつてノルウェーにはインナーサークルというブラックメタルの “カルト” がありましたね。彼らの暴力、放火、殺人、そして音楽をどう評価しますか？
【YNGVE】: そのシーンのクールな曲やレコードはいくつかある。IMMORALS の “Damned In Black” とかね。彼らは銀のスプーンを口にくわえて生まれた、親を憎みすぎている何の苦労もない不気味なオタクだ。彼らがやったことはすべてダサいと思う。
教会を燃やしたことだってそうだ。どうせまた税金を使って教会を建て直すだけだ。殺人なんてもってのほか。バカバカしい。明らかに問題を抱えた10代の若者たちだ。そして今日、あのクソどもはネオナチになった。僕が悪魔崇拝者より嫌いなのは、クソナチスだ。そしてルーン文字。ルーン文字とそれを象徴するナショナリズムが大嫌いだ。ブラックメタルなんてクソ食らえだ！
