「メタルの曲の中には、リズムのおかげでとても素晴らしくなったものがある。ヘッド・バンギングしたくなるようなゾクゾク感があるのは、曲によってはリズムにそれを後押ししてくれる力があるからだ。ブラジルのパーカッシブなスタイルも同じで、特にここバイーアには有名なパーカッシブ・アーティストがたくさんいる。ヘッド・バンギングは、パーカッションで踊っているようなものなんだ。体が音楽に反応しているんだ。だからブラジリアン・パーカッションはメタルによく合うんだと思う」
西欧から旅立ち世界各地で芽吹いたメタルの種は、その土地土地における文化や個性を吸収しながらスクスクと育ち、今、実りの時を迎えています。そんなメタルの生命力、感染力、包容力が最も根付いた場所のひとつが、南米、ブラジルでしょう。
思い返せば、ブラジルはメタル多様化のきっかけともなった場所。ANGRA が多少強引でも、アマゾンの伝統音楽をメタルに引き込んだ “Holy Land” のやり方はあまりに革命的でしたし、SEPULTURA が “CHAOS A.D.” や “Roots” でメタルにブラジルの鼓動を持ち込んだその手法は、世界各地のメタル・アーティストに勇気ときっかけを与えたのです。そんなブラジルからまた超新星が現れました。AURO CONTROL。黄金を意味する Auro と “Out of Control” がかけられたバンド名が示す通り、彼らのヘドバン・パーカッションは黄金の制御不能です。
「僕らの曲には ANGRA の影響が大きいけど、バイーア・パーカッションのアプローチは ANGRA のアイデアとは少し違うんだ。だけど、”Holy land” はブラジリアン・ヘッドバンガーのプレイリストに必ず入っているアルバムだ。僕はアルバム “Rebirth” がとても好きで、彼らがもうライブでは演奏しないこのアルバムの曲を聴いて、とてもノスタルジックな思い出に浸っている。”Unholy Wars” だよ」

今回弊誌では、Lucas de Ouro にインタビューを行うことができました。「日本のコントラストが大好きになった。奈良の自然と文化の美しさに惚れ込み、秋葉原や渋谷の喧騒に夢中になった。巨匠鳥山明の作品が大好きで、漫画を描いて育ったからね。ギターの Lucas Barnery も日本文化に夢中だ。彼は、巨匠・三浦健太郎の漫画 “ベルセルク” のタトゥーを入れているし、尾田栄一郎先生と岸本斉史先生の “ONE PIECE” と “NARUTO” が大好きなんだ。アルバムのブックレットにある彼の “Thanks session” には、ファイナル・ファンタジーのビデオゲームに対するスクウェア・エニックスへの愛が綴られている！GALNERYUS, X JAPAN, Babymetal, Crossfaith のようなバンドの曲も大好きだしね。スーパー戦隊や特撮シリーズも大好きさ」

INTERVIEW WITH LUCAS DE OURO
Q1: This is the first appearance in this magazine! Could you start by telling us about your musical background?
【LUCAS】: First of all, I would like to say that I am very happy to be talking to you! Music provides these incredible encounters and goes beyond frontiers!
My musical background is quite mixed. Of course I really like heavy metal and I grew up listening to all the classic bands. But I started singing from a young age and began performing professionally in different musical styles until I formed my first metal band.
I’m really eclectic and Brazilian folk music is also part of my influences.
Q1: 本誌初登場ですね！まず、あなたの音楽的なバックグラウンドからお話ししていただけますか？
【LUCAS】: まず最初に、こうして話せることをとても嬉しく思うよ！音楽は国境を越えて、素晴らしい出会いを与えてくれるね！
僕の音楽的なバックグラウンドはかなり複雑なんだ。もちろん、ヘヴィ・メタルは大好きだし、クラシックなバンドを聴いて育ったよ。でも、若い頃から歌い始めて、初めてメタル・バンドを結成するまで、さまざまな音楽スタイルでプロとして演奏してきたからね。僕はとても多様で、ブラジルの民族音楽にも影響を受けているんだよ。
Q2: When I first heard your voice, I felt it was a fusion of the two voices of Andre Matos and Edu Falaschi; the singers of Angra seem to have a great influence on your singing, would you agree?
【LUCAS】: Yes! It’s a great honor to know this, because these two vocalists are part of my musical references and they are really incredible.
Andre Matos was a maestro, with a unique voice and an unparalleled range. Edu Falaschi was the Brazilian metal vocalist I listened to the most in my life. Because he also has low tones, I identify a lot with Edu. He is a master at singing with emotion.
Q2: 初めてあなたの歌声を聴いたとき、Andre Matos と Edu Falaschi 2人の歌声が融合しているように感じました。ANGRA のシンガーたちは、あなたの歌唱に大きな影響を与えているようですね？
【LUCAS】: それはとても光栄だよ！そうだね、その2人のボーカリストは、僕の音楽的影響の一部であり、本当に素晴らしい人たちだから。

Q3: In fact, your music itself has inherited Angra’s aesthetic. Especially the wonderful way you blend Bahia percussion and Amazonian folk music with metal, reminds me of “Holy Land”. Which is your favorite song and album by Angra?
【LUCAS】: That’s true, we have a large influence of Angra in our songs, but our approach of the Bahia percussion is a little bit different from the ideas that Angra uses. Holy land is an album that’s on every Brazilian headbanger’s playlist.
I really like the album Rebirth and I have great nostalgic memories listening to a song from this album, which they no longer play live: Unholy Wars.
Q3: 実際、AURO CONTROL の音楽そのものが ANGRA の美学を受け継いでいますよね？
特にバイーアのパーカッションやアマゾンの民族音楽とメタルを融合させた素晴らしいやり方は、彼らの “Holy Land”を思い起こさせます。ANGRA の曲とアルバムで一番好きなものはどれですか？
【LUCAS】: そうだね、僕らの曲には ANGRA の影響が大きいけど、バイーア・パーカッションのアプローチは ANGRA のアイデアとは少し違うんだ。だけど、”Holy land” はブラジリアン・ヘッドバンガーのプレイリストに必ず入っているアルバムだ。

Q4: Speaking of Brazilian folk music, Sepultura is another great fusion of metal and it. Why do you think Brazilian folk music and percussion fit so well with metal?
【LUCAS】: Our roots! I think that’s because of the rhythm. Some metal songs are so great because of the rhythm. You feel thrilled to bang your head because there’s a force in some songs that push you to it. It’s the same Idea with the Brazilian percussive style, specifically here in our hometown Bahia.
We have tons of well known percussionists artists, such as Olodum (that recorded with Paul Simon and Michael Jackson), Carlinhos Brown and Timbalada, for example. And they are so rich rhythmically! So, when you bang your head, you are kind of dancing. It’s your body reacting to the music. I think that’s why Brazilian percussion fits so well with metal.
Q4: ブラジルの民族音楽といえば、SEPULTURA もまたメタルとブラジル民族音楽の素晴らしい融合を果たしていましたね。ブラジルの民族音楽とパーカッションがメタルにこれほどよく合うのはなぜだと思いますか？
【LUCAS】: 僕たちの “ルーツ” だよ！それはリズムのおかげだと思う。例えばメタルの曲の中には、リズムのおかげでとても素晴らしくなったものがある。ヘッド・バンギングしたくなるようなゾクゾク感があるのは、曲によってはリズムにそれを後押ししてくれる力があるからだ。ブラジルのパーカッシブなスタイルも同じで、特にここバイーアには有名なパーカッシブ・アーティストがたくさんいる。
例えば、Olodum （ポール・サイモンやマイケル・ジャクソンとレコーディング）、Carlinhos Brown, Timbalada など、有名なパーカッションのアーティストがたくさんいる。彼らはリズムがとても豊かなんだ！だから、ヘッド・バンギングは、パーカッションで踊っているようなものなんだ。体が音楽に反応しているんだ。だからブラジリアン・パーカッションはメタルによく合うんだと思う。
Q5: Members of Angra, Hibria, and even Jeff Scott Soto are on the album. How did you get such an “all-star” lineup?
【LUCAS】: I see creating an album as an opportunity to compose music that makes sense to me and to get closer to those I admire. I wanted to record with my old friends and that’s why I put together this line up.
When Thiago “Bonga” joined Hibria, I was very happy, as I’ve known him since I was a teenager. Recently, Diego Pires was also called to play with the legendary band Warlord. Lucas Barnery and Davi Britto are incredible too. So, I think I’m lucky to be friends with excellent musicians!
The other special appearances for the album were made possible by our producer Thiago Bianchi, who loved the band and is very well connected. He has recorded many albums with Aquiles Priester and his band has toured supporting Sons of Apolo in Europe. So he was the one who introduced me to JSS. I wanted to do everything without rushing, with a lot of dedication and I can say that I am very satisfied with everything we accomplished with this album.
Q5: ANGRA, HIBRIA のメンバー、そしてかの Jeff Scott Soto がアルバムに参加しています。どうやってこのような “オールスター”・ラインナップを実現することができたのですか？
【LUCAS】: アルバム制作は、自分にとって意味のある音楽を作曲し、尊敬する人たちに近づく機会だと考えているんだ。昔からの友人たちと一緒にレコーディングしたかったから、このようなラインナップを組んだんだ。
Thiago “Bonga” が HIBRIA に加わったとき、僕はとても嬉しかった。最近では、Diego Pires も伝説的なバンド、WARLORD に呼ばれた。 Lucas Barnery と Davi Britto も素晴らしい。だから、優秀なミュージシャンと友達になれてラッキーだと思う！

Q6: Pandemics, wars, divisions, climate change…the world is under a dark cloud in the 20s.” The Harp” seems to bring resilience to those who suffer oppression, depression, and loneliness in such a world, telling them they are not alone and resurrecting them like a phoenix, would you agree?
【LUCAS】: That’s exactly it. You really understood my intention! This album is a breather after very turbulent years. The lyrics have a cathartic effect for myself and were important for me to overcome my dark moments. I hope people can identify and seek light through our songs.
Q6: パンデミック、戦争、分断、気候変動…20年代の世界は暗雲に包まれています。”The Harp” は、そんな世界で抑圧、抑うつ、孤独に苦しむ人々に回復力をもたらし、孤独ではないことを伝え、”不死鳥” のようにリスナーを復活させる作品に思えます。
【LUCAS】: その通りだよ。僕の意図を本当に理解してくれたね！このアルバムは、激動の数年を経て、ほっと一息つける作品なんだよ。歌詞には僕自身のカタルシス効果があって、暗い瞬間を乗り越えるために重要だったんだ。僕たちの歌を通して、人々が共感し、光を求めてくれることを願っているよ。
Q7: Speaking, phoenix, Power metal almost disappeared from the world for a while, but recently we have seen the emergence of excellent bands like you, Twilight Force, Fellowship, Gloryhammer, Power Paladin, and others. Do you believe that Power Metal will make a comeback like phoenix?
【LUCAS】: Yes it is true! I’m noticing this comeback movement and I’m very happy to see that our great artists are back on important tours around the world and that new artists are being able to present their work.
Here in Brazil, there is really a new wave of Power Metal bands and we are happy to be part of this movement!
Q7: 不死鳥といえば、パワー・メタルは一時期世界から消えかけていましたが、最近、あなたや TWILIGHT FORCE, FELLOWSHIP, GLORYHAMMER, POWER PALADIN のような優れたバンドが出現しています。
パワーメタルは不死鳥のように復活するのでしょうか？
【LUCAS】: そうだね、それは真実だよ！僕はこのパワー・メタルのカムバックの動きに注目しているし、偉大なアーティストたちが世界中の重要なツアーに戻ってきたり、新しいアーティストたちが自分たちの作品を発表できるようになったりしているのを見て、とても嬉しく思っているんだ。
特にここブラジルでは、パワー・メタルのバンドに新しい波が押し寄せているよ！
Q8: Perhaps your music would be described as prog-metal or Prog-power. Many of the prog giants are old and have passed away. Meanwhile, the world is dominated by the instant culture of social networking and clippings, and few young people will bother to take the time and trouble to pursue a epic and complex prog. So, What was it that drove you guys to the prog in such a situation?
【LUCAS】: We like music and we like to really dive into it. In general, the world is quite superficial, but we believe that good music will never end. Songs live forever and these giants will always be present, influencing new generations. At the same time that we see this movement of people who cannot pay attention for more than 15 seconds on social media, we also see young prodigies playing the guitar and revolutionizing the way we play instruments.
There is a lot of value in wanting to push your limits and challenge yourself to play or sing a complex song. Needs a lot of dedication, but it is very rewarding. There is still hope and I like to see the bright side of things.
Q8: おそらく、AURO CONTROL の音楽はプログ・メタルやプログ・パワーと表現されるでしょう。プログの巨人の多くは高齢となり、他界した人も少なくありません。一方、世の中はSNSやクリッピングのインスタント文化に支配され、わざわざ時間と手間をかけて壮大で複雑なプログを追求する若者はほとんどいない状況です。そんな中、あなたたちをプログに駆り立てたものは何ですか？
【LUCAS】: 僕たちは音楽が好きで、音楽の世界に飛び込むのが好きなんだ。一般的に、今の世の中はとても表面的だけど、僕たちは良い音楽に終わりはないと信じているからね。歌は永遠に生き続け、そうした巨人たちは常に存在し、新しい世代に影響を与え続ける。ソーシャルメディア上で15秒以上注意を払えない人々が増えてきたのと同時に、その場所で若い天才たちがギターを弾き、楽器の演奏方法に革命を起こしている。
つまり自分の限界に挑戦し、複雑な曲の演奏や歌に挑戦することには、多くの価値があるんだよ。多くの献身が必要だけど、とてもやりがいがある。まだ希望はあるし、僕は物事の明るい面を見るのが好きなんだ。

Yes! I love Japan!
I’ve already had the opportunity to visit the cities of Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Kyoto with my family and I hope to return, now with my band! I spent 10 days on vacation and loved the contrasts of Japan. I fell in love with the natural and cultural beauty of Nara and loved getting lost in the hustle and bustle of Akihabara and Shibuya. I love the work of master Akira Toriyama and I grew up drawing manga.
Our guitar player Lucas Barnery is crazy about Japanese culture as well. He has a tattoo for Berserk, the manga from the master Kentaro Myura, he loves One Piece and Naruto from Master Eichiro Oda and mr. Masashi Kishimoto. You will probably notice in his “thanks session” in our album booklet that he sends his love to Square Enix for all the Final Fantasy Videogames! We also love the songs by Galnerius, X Japan, Baby Metal and Crossfaith. We also love the super sentais and the tokusatsu series.
