UK Based Melodic Hardcore Four Piece, NAPOLEON Has Just Released The Genre-Breaking Debut Full-length, “Newborn Mind” !! “Melodiposipassiongroove” Is Here !!

DISC REVIEW “NEWBORN MIND”

And So I Watch You From Afar
“Dystopia” で歌われる “get awake and defeat this” というフレーズは “Utopia” でも再度現れます。

【INTERVIEW WITH SAM OSBORN】

Q1: This is the first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about your band? How did Napoleon come to be? And what’s the meaning behind your band name “Napoleon”? It’s little bit strange for the band from UK, haha.

【SAM】: Me and James started the band in 2011. I met James at college and showed him a some songs i was working on. We then got together with some friends and started the band. Since then we’ve had many different vocalists and bass players but we never let it stop us making music. We eventually found the members we had always been looking for and feel more solid than ever. I chose the name Napoleon because it stands out and it’s different to most other band names. Unfortunately there isn’t a good story about the name it just felt right so we stuck with it. We are all kind of short though!

Q2: So, could you tell us your musical background, upbringings?

【SAM】: Me, Jacob and James all started by having instrument lessons from an early age. We had been in seperate local bands throughout school and college but Napoleon is the first band we have been able to tour with. We recruited Wes after his previous band Climates split up.

Q3: Your debut full-length, “Newborn Mind” is just out now! How are you feeling now? And how are the reactions so far?

【SAM】: It feels amazing now that Newbron Mind has been released. It was a long and hard journey but we put a lot of work into the songs and are very proud of them! Its great to be able to play these new songs live and the crowd reactions have been better than ever before! The feedback we have had has been very positive and we’re very thankful that people stuck by us after such a long wait. This is only the begining of the band and we can’t wait for the next step!

【SAM】: “Newborn Mind”

Q4: When you named it “Newborn Mind”, what was in your mind? Could you tell us about the concept or lyrical themes of “Newborn Mind”?

【SAM】: The themes of newborn mind are mainly about dealing with depression, it comes from a personal place but aims and reaches out to people who feel the same way. It strives to connect to people to not feel alone when they are suffering from mental health. Other running themes talk about religion and politics. ‘Newborn mind’ was meant to portray an idea of creating a fresher way of thinking and trying to drown out the negativity and turning it into positivity.

【SAM】: “Newborn Mind”

Q5: It took about four years since you released “What We See”. In the interval, you contracted with Basick Records. Was that the main reason of this long interval?

【SAM】: The main reason it took so long was that we didnt feel like we had a stable line up. We didn’t want to release our debut album and potentially have different members on the second and third album. We felt like this was the proper start of the band and it should start how we mean to end. Also for me Writing 10 songs was a personal challenge and i underestimated the whole process. I learnt a lot along the way and i’m working hard on the second album.

Q6: Anyway, “Newborn Mind” is definitely game-changing record, you know, your comparison of aggression and atmosphere is outstanding. For example, if you are compared to Killswitch Engage meets Intervals, what do you think about that?

【SAM】: Its interesting because everytime we get compared to other bands everyone says different ones. I think its awesome that everyone can hear different comparisons. We try to make music thats origional and different but inspired by all our favourite bands so its nice not to be compared to only one band all the time. Killswitch Engage were one of my favourite bands through school and i listened to Intervals whilst recording the album so thats awesome!

Q7: “Maps” is different style of your song writing. The song made me feel the influence from Math-Rock. Was the genre one of your inspiration?

【SAM】: Math-Rock was a big inspiration for my guitar playing. I like the unusual timings, guitar tones and guitar tunings that bands in this genre used. I tried to mix elements of that with metal and i will be doing a lot more of that in the future!

Q8: “Of Jams, Smokes & Promises” intro reminds me Irish melody, like And So I Watch You From Afar. Also, the intro of “Stargazer” “Utopia” has Hendrix blues feeling. I think that kind of clean guitar is one of your strong identity and very effective !! Do you agree that?

【SAM】: Yes. Its something we have always included since the first songs we ever wrote. I will be adding lots more clean guitar sections on the new material aswell! Its fun to play live and the response has been really positive!
