モダン=多様性、エクレクティック。2010年代音楽シーンの重要な公式に当てはめれば、極めてモダンであるとの解が出るであろう UK 出身の DIY デュオ HUNG が最新作 “Djurassic Word” をリリースしました！！
モダンであるはずの彼らが、太古の恐竜を文字ったアルバムタイトルを冠しているのも興味深いですが、頭文字Dに注目するまでもなく HUNG の骨格は Djent / Prog Metal です。しかしながら、HUNG の音楽はその領域に収まりきらない鮮やかな拡がりを備えています。
“Pastille Coloured Lady” を聴けばアルバムが”キャッチー”というテーマに強くフォーカスしていることに気づきます。Djenty なリフワークとファンクのグルーヴを併せ持ったリズムに、キラキラのキーボード。透明感溢れるキャッチーなボーカルが加われば、21世紀の POP-Rock アイコン DIRTY LOOPS を思い出すファンも多いでしょう。
実際、DIRTY LOOPS もファンク、ジャズ、エレクトロニカという多様な要素を楽曲に盛り込む “Loopfy” という手法でモダンなテイストを表現しているのはご存知の通り。Rock と Metal、畑こそ違えど HUNG がそこにヒントを得ているのは明らかでしょう。アルバムを通じて印象的なキーボード/エレクトロサウンドは特に。
さらに、エクレクティックという観点から見れば、 “Browbeat” も重要な1曲だと感じます。以前弊誌でインタビューを行った HACKTIVIST が Kendrick Lamar について言及し、Rap を見事モダンメタルと融合させていたように、HUNG も Rap を積極的に楽曲に導入しています。アトモスフェリックとさえ言えるような Rap パートとヘヴィネスのコントラストが実に見事ですね。
同時に、HUNG は Djent / Prog-Metal の矜持とも言える高いテクニックをも兼ね備えています。PERIPHERY を想起させる爽快なアルバムオープナー “Primevil” は勿論、Dan Sugarman, Angel Vivaldi など、シーンでも有数のテクニシャンたちがゲスト参加したアルバムは、モダンギターという観点から見ても非常に充実した、聴き所の多い作品となっていますね。特に、ボーカル間に挟み込まれる、美しくスリリングな高速オブリガードは彼らのトレードマークとも言えるほどに際立っています。
“The Mesozoic Era” で 80’s エレポップのような手法を取り入れたかと思えば、”Carcharodontosaurus” では VEIL OF MAYA も真っ青なプログデスコアを臆面もなく披露する柔軟性。カメレオンという恐竜が現代に生き残っていることを思い浮かべてしまいますね。
今回弊誌では、バンドの中心人物 Barnaby Oakley にインタビューを行うことが出来ました。ボーカル、ギター、プロダクション全てをこなす才人！イケメン！どうぞ！

【INTERVIEW WITH BARNABY ORKLEY】
Q1: This is the first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about your band? How did Hung come to be? And what’s the meaning behind your band name “Hung”?
【BARNABY】: HUNG was started as a side project to my previous band Elements.
Originally it was a purely instrumental project and i was the sole member, i wrote a 7 track EP called “I Touched The Sky” and it was received really well, notoriously critical reviewers I Probably Hate Your Band reviewed it and were really positive, this sparked a lot of people to show interest in HUNG and also inspired me to keep creating music.
I then went on to make my first album Level2 and had my friend Freddy do some features, after which we decided to completely redefine HUNG, evolve it into a project with vocals and also incorporate Fred as a second writer/performer.
The name is actually all capitals (HUNG) and it stands for Heavy Unpredictable New Grooves.
Q1: 本誌初登場です！まずはバンド結成の経緯とバンド名 “Hung” の由来を教えていただけますか？
【BARNABY】: HUNG は僕が以前やっていたバンド ELEMENTS のサイドプロジェクトとして始めたんだ。元々は純粋にインストゥルメンタルプロジェクトで、僕が1人でやっていたんだよ。
7曲入の EP、”I Touced The Sky” がとても好評だったんだ。悪名高い “I Probably Hate Your Band” でさえポジティブなレビューだったね。それが多くの人の注目を集めるきっかけになり、僕の創造力を掻き立てる結果にもなったのさ。
それからデビューフル “Level 2” を制作したんだけど、友人の Freddy に何箇所か参加してもらったんだ。その後、僕は HUNG を完全に刷新しようと決めて、ボーカルを加えること、Freddy をセカンドソングライター/パフォーマーとして加えることにしたんだよ。
バンド名の HUNG とは頭文字を集めたもので、Heavy Unpredictable New Grooves (ヘヴィーで予想不可な新しいグルーヴ) を意味しているよ。
Q2: How was your musical upbringing like? What made you decide to become a musician?
【BARNABY】: I’ve had music around me all my life, i remember back when i was 6 being taught to sing and joining choirs, i picked up a lot of instruments over the years, drums, violin, trumpet, piano but the starting point for me was singing. I’ve sung in choirs in the UK and spent quite some time in musical theatre, up until around 14. At which point i stated getting into metal and picked up the guitar. Aside from vocals, guitar is the only instrument i continued playing for longer than 2 years. I started my first band when i was 15, we sucked haha!
Q2: あなたの音楽的な背景、ミュージシャンになろうと思ったきっかけを教えていただけますか？
【BARNABY】: 僕の人生は常に音楽と共にあったね。6歳の時に歌を教えられ、コーラス隊に入ったんだ。それから何年かの間に、ドラム、ヴァイオリン、トランペット、ピアノなど沢山の楽器を始めたけど、僕にとってのスターティングポイントは歌だったんだよ。
UK のコーラス隊で歌い、14歳までは劇場で多くの時間を過ごしていたね。それからメタルにハマるようになって、ギターを始めたんだ。ボーカル以外だと、ギターが唯一2年以上続いた楽器だね。15歳の時に最初のバンドを始めたんだけど、下手くそだったよ(笑)。
Q3: Anyway, your newest album “Djurassic Word” is just out now! It seems that this title is Djent + Jurassic World. What’s the meaning behind that?
【BARNABY】: Honestly? There is no serious meaning behind it. I just absolutely love dinosaurs and progressive metal! I wouldn’t say we’re a “Djent” band as i feel we’re more complex than the genre defines, however we do have people refer to our music as Djent and so instead of correcting them we’ve decided to take it and run with it.
Q3: 最新作 “Djurassic Word” がリリースされましたね！タイトルは Djent と Jurassic World を合わせた造語のように思えますが？
【BARNABY】: 真実が聴きたいかい？タイトルにシリアスな意味はないんだよ。僕は絶対的に恐竜とプログメタルが大好きなんだ！
僕は自分たちを Djent バンドだとは思わないんだ。そのジャンルより複雑な音楽性だと感じているからね。だけどリスナーは僕たちを Djent だと呼ぶから、訂正するよりそのまま使用することにしたんだ。
Q4: “Djurassic Word” is consisted of 14 songs, long epic. Could you tell us about the concept or lyrical themes of the album?
【BARNABY】: It is indeed a long album… Probably the longest we’ll ever write as it took AGES and was pretty stressful. There isn’t a particular “Theme” on the album, some of the songs are about prehistoric life but most of them are just lyrics about either my life or situations i’ve been involved in, unlike our previous album which was a concept album.
Q4: “Djurassic Word” は14曲から成る大作です。作品のコンセプトや歌詞のテーマについて教えていただけますか？
【BARNABY】: うん、実際長いアルバムだよね。おそらく僕たちがこれまで書いてきた中で最も長いから、時間もかかったし、とてもストレスが溜まったね。アルバムに特にテーマは存在しないんだ。楽曲のいくつかは正史以前の生活についてなんだけど、ほとんどはただ僕の人生やシチュエーションに関わることについてだね。前作はコンセプトアルバムだったんだけどね。
Q5: Lot’s of great musicians like Dan Sugarman, Angel Vivaldi, Jake Lowe, are guest appearances. How did you choose them?
【BARNABY】: The guest features were probably my favourite part of the process, i loved hearing what other like minded musicians came up with when hearing our music. Pretty much every feature was chosen due to their incredible playing abilities, some of the features were chosen to bring more publicity to artists we felt needed more recognition whereas some were purely because we admired them.
Originally Plini was meant to be doing a feature but he’s been SO BUSY this year that we had to replace him with Dan Sugarman, who was more than a great replacement, all the features did exceptionally well.
Q5: ゲストミュージシャンも実に豪華ですね。
【BARNABY】: ゲストを選ぶのは、僕の大好きなプロセスなんだ。他の熱心なミュージシャンが、僕たちの音楽を聴いて創造したものを聴くのが好きなんだよ。
全てのゲストミュージシャンはその驚異的な演奏能力で選んだんだけど、その内何人かは、僕たちが純粋に崇拝していて、もっと世の中に認知されて欲しいという宣伝の意味もあるね。
元々は、Plini も参加するはずだったんだけど、今年彼は忙しすぎてね。だから代わりに Dan Sugarman を起用したのさ。彼は代役以上の存在になってくれたよ。全てのゲストが並外れていたね。
Q6: So, “Catchy” is one of the most important word for “Djurassic Word”, I think. Off course, you are categorized, Prog metal, or Djent. But, even we can remind Dirty Loops. What’s POP to you?
【BARNABY】: The fact you just compared us to Dirty Loops has made me so happy. Dirty Loops are actually my favourite group, both Fred and I love them. I wouldn’t say we’re pop but i do think we open up a gateway for people who don’t normally listen to metal, probably due to the high amount of singing and jazz influences!
Q6: “Djurassic Word” において”キャッチー”とは最も重要なテーマの1つのように思います。勿論、あなた達は Prog, Djent, Metal にカテゴライズされていますが、DIRTY LOOPS すら想起させる Pop な感覚が存在しますね？
【BARNABY】: 君が DIRTY LOOPS と比較してくれて本当に嬉しいよ。DIRTY LOOPS は実際、僕のフェイバリットグループなんだよ。Freddy も僕も大好きなんだ。
僕たちが Pop だとは言わないけど、確かに普段メタルを聴かないような人たちへのイントロダクションとなるように思うね。おそらくは沢山のボーカルと、ジャズからの影響のためにね。
Q7: From the Prog / Djent view, “Djurassic Word” is so eclectic, and it’s often compared with Erra and Periphery. What’s do you think about the comparison? Where is the idea mixing from Djent, Prog to Jazz, Electronic?
【BARNABY】: Erra and Periphery are another 2 comparisons i take with much pride. These 2 artists closely follow Dirty Loops in my top 5 bands. I would say that they are an influence in what we create, however we always try to expand on our influences and create something isolated and unique. I think a fan said it best when he described us as “Polyphias love child with vocals”
The idea of mixing genres is something i was very interested in right from the start, as i said before, we just want to do something different, i would hate to be known as “that band who sound just like *insert another band name*.” When people hear our music i want them to know its us right away and i think we’ve managed to do that with our latest record.
Q7: Prog / Djent という観点から見れば、”Djurassic Word” は非常にエクレクティックで、ERRA や PERIPHERY とも比較されていますね？
【BARNABY】: ERRA と PERIPHERY は DIRTY LOOPS 以外に比較されて誇らしいと思えるバンド2つだね。僕のトップ5バンドの中でも DIRTY LOOPS に極めて近い存在さ。
ただ、確かに彼らは僕たちに影響を与えているけれど、僕たちはいつも影響を拡大し、独特でユニークな音楽を作ろうとトライしているんだよ。”ボーカルを加えた POLYPHIA の落胤” というファンの言葉は、実に良く僕たちを表現していると思うな。
様々なジャンルをミックスさせる手法には、始めた時からとても興味を持っていたんだよ。さっきも言ったけど、何か異なることをしたいんだ。｢このバンドは〜にソックリです｣なんて知られるのはゴメンだね。リスナーが聴いてすぐ僕たちだと分かるような音楽を作りたいし、新作はそうなっていると思うよ。
Q8: So, official member of Hung are you and Freddy, only two members now. Do you have a plan to add some members near future?
【BARNABY】: As far as new members go.. No. I don’t think we will, we still do shows, although the drums and bass are all on backing tracks, we kind of poke fun at the fact there’s only two of us and turn it into something funny, rather than something thats a hindrance, there are many perks to having only two members, money, travel and time being 3 of them.
Q8: 今のところ、HUNG のオフィシャルメンバーはあなたと Freddy の2人だけですが、これからメンバーを増やす予定はありますか？
【BARNABY】: 新メンバーに関しては…増やそうとは思わないな。ドラムスとベースはバッキングトラックだけど、ライブもやっているしね。僕たちはメンバーが2人しかいないことをジョークにしているんだよ。
面白いことに、支障よりも、お金、旅、時間といった点で2人の方が良いことが多いんだよ。
