Melbourne Based Heavy Fusion Quintet, Twelve Foot Ninja Has Just Released Gorgeous New Album “Outlier”!! Ninja Assassin Is Aiming At You !!

DISC REVIEW “OUTLIER”

TWELVE FOOT NINJA “OUTLIER” : 9.6/10

【INTERVIEW WITH NIK “KIN” ETIK】

twelvefootninja02

Q1: This is the first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about your band? How did Twelve Foot Ninja come to be?

【KIN】: Twelve Foot Ninja was formed by guitarist Stevic MacKay and drummer Shane “Russ” Russell. They wanted to come together and form a band and they advertised for a singer in Melbourne – that’s how they found me.

Q2: Where did your band name, Twelve Foot Ninja, come from? Sometimes, you use Japanese Kanji for it like 十二尺忍者. Do you have much interest in Japanese culture or history?

【KIN】: The name came about from a game called “would you rather” between Stevic and a friend on a road trip. The question was something like “would you rather live in the Middle Ages with a machine gun and unlimited ammunition OR be a Twelve Foot Ninja?”. Stevic then decided it was a good name for a band.
As for having an interest in Japanese culture, I certainly do. I studied Japanese when I was at school when I was introduced to Japanese culture and food for the first time. I also have an interest in the life and teachings of the great Miyamoto Musashi and the filmography of Akira Kurosawa. Everyone else in the band loves Japanese imagery, food, and manga. Also, our manager studied Japanese at university, worked in Japan twice, and did a university thesis on Japanese corporate conglomerates. We have developed a band code called the ‘The Almond of Truth’ which is loosely based on Bushidou (武士道). It started off as a way to keep our tour bus tidy, to be frugal with limited resources, and to respect each other when living in close quarters. This code has now become a whole way of doing things including trials in the almond court. Even though our band name has ‘ninja’ in it, philosophically we are more aligned with samurai values. We’d like to learn a lot more about Japan and would love the opportunity to tour there!.

Q2: TWELVE FOOT NINJA

Q3: So, your newest album “Outlier” is just out now! When you name this great record “Outlier”, what was in your mind? Could you tell us about the concept or lyrical themes or “Ninja Mission” of the album?

【KIN】: We think of people who buy our music as outliers because they seem to be the exception in a world of piracy and freemium streaming. We named the album Outlier after these supporters because without them, we could not afford to keep making music. The themes on this new album are many and varied but I would say the central theme is mortality.

Q4: “Outlier” is full of ridiculously eclectic sound, ranging from rock to metal to funk to Latin to hip-hop. I think it’s also a trademark of TFN. What inspired you to mix them? How can you make it all work?

【KIN】: We are all influenced by a wide variety of styles of music and the hardest part of writing music for Twelve Foot Ninja is creating smooth transitions between those different styles. But it’s definitely a challenge that we enjoy so that’s why we do it.

Q5: “Monsoon” is very special song for Japanese fans. It seems that you use Japanese traditional instrument “Shamisen” in this song. How did you know it? What made you use in the song?

【KIN】: We used a classical Indian instrument in ‘Monsoon’ that sounds similar to a shamisen called a tumbi. We actually used the Japanese Shamisen in ‘Collateral’ from Outlier and in a song called ‘Beneath The Smiles’ on our very first EP New Dawn.

Q6: “Point of You” symbolizes your “catchy” aspects. You know, It reminds me of Maroon 5, haha. Also, there are lots of horn sections here. Was the song challenging for you?

【KIN】: The song wasn’t particularly challenging. The lyrics and melody were written separately with different music months before the final sound bed was written. When I heard the music, the melody and lyrics that I already had fit perfectly.
As for the horns, it was the first time we’d ever utilized them for a song and I think it worked really well. Someone in the band suggested horns as something that might sound good with our music so we tried it out and it worked..

Q7: Sikth returns and The Dillinger Escape Plan will come to an end. I think your chaotic elements are mainly influenced by them. Do you agree with that? What are they to you?

【KIN】: There are many aspects to our sound and they are influenced by a multitude of bands. I think it’s great that Sikth have returned and their new music is particularly good. A lot of people are upset about The Dillinger Escape Plan ending but I think it was a wise decision to go out on top.

Q8: Aussie Prog / Tech Metal scene is outstanding these days. Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus, Ne Obriviscalis, Northlane, Plini, and off course TFN. Do you know them personally? What’s your thought about Aussie music scene?

【KIN】: The Aussie music scene is a rich and diverse scene made up of some of the world’s most talented musicians, performers and writers. We do know some of those bands personally and there are others that we haven’t met. But Australia is a small place and I’m sure we’ll meet those bands eventually and share a beer and a bbq together.

【FIVE ALBUMS】

FIVE ALBUMS THAT CHANGED KIN’S LIFE!!

KISS “ALIVE Ⅱ”

alive_2_cover

The first band I fell in love with when I was 2 years old. I had KISS make up and a KISS guitar and I used to put on a KISS concert for my mum who would be sitting at the record player playing my favourite songs

THE THE “INFECTED”

the_the_-_infected_cd_album_cover

My dad gave me this album when I was a kid. Matt Johnson’s style of writing caught my imagination.

METALLICA “MASTER OF PUPPETS”

metallica_-_master_of_puppets_cover-4

A  friend at school made me a tape with both Master of Puppets and Kill ‘Em All (both by Metallica) but it was Master of Puppets that I was drawn to the most namely because of Cliff Burton’s superior bass playing.

MR.BUNGLE “S.T.”

mrbungle-mrbungle

Having already been a fan of Faith No More for years, I discovered Mr. Bungle after seeing Mike Patton wear a Mr. Bungle t-shirt in the film clip for Epic. One day I was in a record store and saw the album and immediately purchased it and have been a fan ever since.

FREDRIK THORDENDAL’S SPECIAL DEFECTS “SOL NIGER WITHIN”

41qm7thjhml

A friend of mine played this album to me at a party and I immediately fell in love with it. It was from this album that I discovered Meshuggah, my favourite band.
