NEW DISC REVIEW + INTERVIEW 【CHELSEA WOLFE : BIRTH OF VIOLENCE】

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH CHELSEA WOLFE !!

“Gender Is Fluid, And There Is So Much Beauty In Making Space For All Kinds Of Voices In Music. It’s Happening, And It’s Amazing!”

DISC REVIEW “BIRTH OF VIOLENCE”

“Little Grave” や “Perface to a Dream Play” のトラディションに蠢めく闇の嘶き。 PJ Harvey とゴスクイーンが手を取り合う “Be All Things”。

CHELSEA WOLFE “BIRTH OF VIOLENCE” : 9.9/10

INTERVIEW WITH CHELSEA WOLFE

Q1: In our last interview about “Hiss Spun”, you said “This is a heavy record, and I wanted to write some rock songs with Jess”. But this time, you’ll release an acoustic record “Birth of Violence”. It seems this change of direction is kind of counter about “Hiss Spun”. How about that?

【CHELSEA】: To be honest, I can’t always explain the direction of my music, I simply follow my instincts, and doing so has led me to this point in my career. We toured a ton last year, and that was on top of about 8 years of consistent touring, so there was something whispering and nagging me to take a moment, slow down, learn to take care of myself in mind, body, and spirit. I was beginning to feel tired physically, and drained spiritually. I had also begun writing acoustic songs while I was home for a moment, or while strumming my acoustic guitar in the back of the bus on tour, and wanted to find home and get those songs recorded.

Q2: Compared with “rock style”, we can appreciate your raw, organic performance in this new acoustic record. What is “To rid of rock ornaments” to you?

【CHELSEA】: I have always had both sides living within me: the heavy and the intimate, and I express them even within a record everyone sees as heavy. For example Abyss had “Crazy Love” and Hiss Spun had “Two Spirit” and “Twin Fawn.” But I also think heavy can be intimate, and acoustic folk music can be heavy. I love to play with genres and within genres, and I love to parallel and contrast sounds and moods that don’t typically go together.

Q3: But on the other hands, your partner Ben Chisholm added really nice atmosphere and arrangement. What’s your perspective about his arrangement this time?

【CHELSEA】: We’ve been collaborating such a long time now that our musical landscapes come together quite naturally. For this record, I wrote all of the songs to be able to be played simply as acoustic guitar and voice, but as the recording progressed, the production Ben (Chisholm) was doing became these meadows and mountains around the cabin of the songs I had written. It really felt like he gave my songs a place to live.

Q4: In the climax of title track, “Birth of Violence”, you sing like whisper in really high note. I feel it’s the most emotional voice in 21 century, haha. But what made you sing like that?

【CHELSEA】: The way I sing is very driven by the subject of the song, in an almost feral way – I follow what’s coming out of me naturally and build on that. For “Little Grave,” a song about a child who dies in a school shooting, my voice came out very gentle and quiet. For “Birth of Violence,” most of that song is very confident and like, “fuck you, I know what I want and who I am, back off” – but the ending is a very vulnerable longing, like in actuality you really need this person; you’re really deep in love with them and don’t want to lose them: “baby, you’re the only one.”.

“Little Grave”
“Birth of Violence”

Q5: “American Darkness” is typically, it seems “Birth of Violence” reflects the recent events in the world. What’s the meaning behind the title “Birth of Violence”?

【CHELSEA】: Well, the world is obsessed with violence, but I can barely stand it. I don’t watch horror films and I cry watching the news – I’m very sensitive. But in my old dictionary, the word “violence” had one definition: “strength of emotion.” I felt connected to that and it made me think of a person stepping into their own power; women stepping into their power. The cover photo evokes Joan of Arc and witchcraft, which is very much into following the cycles of Mother Nature. Mother Nature can be violent in her own way, you know?

Q6: Regarding recent events, there has been new wave of women power in the world. What’s the difference between the past and now about living in rock world as a woman?

【CHELSEA】: I’ve seen and felt the wave coming for a long time now. And this is barely the beginning, it’s so cool. There’s room for all of us. And it’s time for acceptance of the non-binary as well. Gender is fluid, and there is so much beauty in making space for all kinds of voices in music. It’s happening, and it’s amazing! I see older bands shifting in their language and opening up to having women on tours that are usually a boys club.

Q7: Could you please tell us about acoustic, folk, traditional musical backgrounds reflected in “Birth of Violence”?

【CHELSEA】: Well, I was very inspired by the American tradition of country, folk and blues for sure. It’s what I was raised on. My father had a country band while I was growing up called El Dorado with my step-mother, so I grew up watching them play shows and open for bigger country acts like Tanya Tucker. But at home I was introduced to Fleetwood Mac, Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt. As I grew up I got into Loretta Lynn, Joan Baez, Abner Jay, Roy Orbison. I can feel all of their influence in my own music.

Q7: “Birth of Violence”

Q8: So now, you are hard to pin down with elements of folk, goth, post-punk, industrial, metal and more. What do you think about your new destination?

【CHELSEA】: I feel like this album marks a new era for me. I say Birth of Violence is a “record of the beginning of an awakening.” So it feels vulnerable and challenging but like it’s time for me to bloom and grow. The heavy and the soft has always and will always exist in my art as a push-and-pull, and as I said before, I’m just following my instincts.
