EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH TAMAS KATAI OF THY CATAFALQUE !!

“I Realized That What I Do Is Very Similar To What Naïve Painters Do. They Lack Formal Training And They Have This Childlike, Dreamy Attitude, Some Pureness And Instinctivity Unlike Trained Artists’ Professional And Practical Approach.”

DISC REVIEW “NAIV”

THY CATAFALQUE “NAIV” : 10/10

INTERVIEW WITH TAMAS KATAI

Q1: First of all, it seems Hungary is not big metal country. How did you find metal there and become to play metal music?

【TAMAS】: Oh well, Hungary is not a big country in the first place. I think the number of metal bands compared to the size and the population of the country is quite good. We had two internationally known metal bands in the ‘80s: Tormentor and Pokolgép and both of them are still active today. They were influential for many youngsters to grab a guitar and play this kind of music. I first encountered metal in the end of the ‘80s in primary school where some of my class mates were listening to Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and stuff like that. I also accidentally watched once Headbangers Ball on MTV and it was the classic Raining Blood video from the Decade of Aggression live album and I got totally hooked. Some years later I tried to imitate metal on my Amiga 500 computer because I had no guitar and this is how the music making started. I should mention that I have always been listening to many other genres so metal has never enjoyed total exclusivity for me but still it is a quite important part of my life.

Q2: Regarding Hungary, there were great composers who mixed classical music and Hungarian traditional music like Liszt, Lehar, Bartok. So, it seems that music has been deeply rooted in the national character of Hungary. Do you agree that?

【TAMAS】: Yes, and let’s not forget Zoltán Kodály! We tend to love and respect our traditional music. Many composers build it inside their own compositions, not note by note but more like the vibe and that’s how I also seem to work, too.

Q3: Also, you’ve been mixing metal and Hungarian traditional music, right? What’s the appeal of Hungarian folk music?

【TAMAS】: I wouldn’t say I mix those. I just have no fear to incorporate anything into metal or even considering metal only as part of the music and not the root of it. Folk or folklore are also elements but I like jazz or electronic music just as much. Folk however demands respect and attention, mishandling it very often results in tasteless kitsch and cheese. For me traditional music means purity, simplicity and honesty.

Q4: So, you moved to Scotland now. And that’s the reason you parted ways with Janos, right? What made you so?

【TAMAS】: I moved to Scotland in January, 2008, almost 12 years ago. János was meanwhile in Hungary, The Netherlands, Norway and then back to Hungary. The reason we parted ways was because I was working a lot on Rengeteg while he didn’t have the means, capacity and time to work and by the time he finally turned up, I was already finished with the album and it was ready to be released without his playing. Of course it hurt him and he left. It was understandable, I did not handle it the best way but I was so much in the creative period that I could not wait for him. We are on good terms now, he has his own music project and he’s still an exceptional riff creator.

Q5: It seems your newest record “Naiv” is an album inspired by “naive art” a style of visual art known for its simplicity and lack of sophistication. Could you please explain the relationship between “Naiv” and “naive art”?

【TAMAS】: I realized that what I do is very similar to what Naïve painters do. They lack formal training and they have this childlike, dreamy attitude, some pureness and instinctivity unlike trained artists’ professional and practical approach. I studied the way they paint and tried to write music the same way. Of course it does not translate directly to notes but the attitude is similar and also it was important that the artwork should reflect it as well.

Q6: The artwork is really catchy and “Non-metal”. Does it reflect the concept or lyrical themes of “Naiv”?

【TAMAS】: Thank you, it definitely does. I was aiming to catch the purity of Naivists together with the purity of folklore and put them into an exciting, futuristic context. This is an acrylic painting anyway painted by my girlfriend and it was great fun to put it together. The original is hanging on the wall of our living room.

Q7: In this diverse musical journey, you tried to amazing plan “11 friends contributing on plenty of exciting instruments”. It seems “Naiv”‘s eclectic and avant-garde music needed so many “11 players”, right?

【TAMAS】: I did not have this plan first. I just started to make a new album but then more and more ideas popped up and you know, music is fun for me. I was trying out different ideas with different instruments and invited friends to contribute. Their contribution enrichened the material vastly and inspired me further so it was like catalysator for creation. I am not a trained musician and my limitations are obvious. Fresh voices, fresh instruments keep the music fresh and exciting for me, for the participants and for the audience as well. I see it as a win-win situation and I’m pretty happy I had such a great company to work with.

Q8: You use Japanese “Shibuya Progressive 7” Kanji guitar, right? What’s the great point of the guitar?

【TAMAS】: Kanji Guitars is a UK based artisan guitar company, not Japanese. They drew their inspiration from Japan but they are British. They approached me to be their endorsee and I was happy to be one. However the Shibuya they made for me is not audible on Naiv yet, By the time I received the instrument, the guitar parts had already been recorded with my original guitar, a seven-string Ibanez RG7321. I’m really excited to record to upcoming stuff with the Kanji Shibuya though! It is a seven string with sapele body, maple, purpleheart and walnut neck and macassar ebony fretboard, Seymour Duncan Nazgul and Sentient passive pickups and Schaller Hannes 7, fixed bridge. It has a characteristic tone, different to the Ibanez. I’m looking forward to use it a lot on the next album.

【TAMAS】: Kanji Guitars
