NEW DISC REVIEW + INTERVIEW 【NOVENA : ELEVENTH HOUR】

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH HARRISON WHITE OF NOVENA !!

“We Felt That Ross & Gareth, The Two Tones They Created Were Distinct, Rich And Balanced Each Other Out Nicely. It Really Gave Us a Wide Palette Of Colours To Paint With On This Album. We Love Playing With That Duality Of Light/Dark, Fragile/Destructive etc.”

DISC REVIEW “ELEVENTH HOUR”

HAKEN, SLICE THE CAKE, THE HAARP MACHINE, RAVENFACE, SLUGDGE, そして BLEEDING OATH。

NOVENA “ELEVENTH HOUR” : 10/10

INTERVIEW WITH HARRISON WHITE

Q1: This is the first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about the band and yourself? What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?

【HARRISON】: Thanks for having us, it’s lovely to meet you, if only through the confines of an email. We’re fans of all sorts of music in Novena, which I think is part of why we like to experiment with lots of different sounds in our songwriting. Growing up, I personally had a lot of Stevie Wonder, Jackson 5, Status Quo, The Eagles, and ABBA in my life. Later came Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath etc, which I discovered in my teenage years! I know Moat listened to mostly 2000s HipHop when he was younger before getting into a lot of Indie. Ross loved a lot of 80s and 90s pop and Arena Rock amongst other things. We’re a varied bunch!

Q2: You are multi-player, played guitar and keybord in Novena, right? What inspired you to play such instruments? Who was musical hero at that time?

【HARRISON】: I play guitar and keys in Novena, correct! I had a few piano lessons when I was about 5 years old, and continued for a few years – but I have to admin I found them quite boring and practising became a chore. When I was about 10 I got my first guitar and immediately fell in love. I originally idolised Status Quo, then Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, and then John Petrucci of Dream Theater, and final Guthrie Govan. When I got to about the age of 16, I picked up the piano again, this time teaching myself. I very quickly got deep into music theory and songwriting, and found the piano to be the most amazing compositional instrument – I write more or less everything at the piano now, rarely the guitar!.

Q3: Novena is definitely progressive super band. Haken, Slice the Cake, The Haarp Machine, Ravenface, Bleeding Oath and Slugdge get together! How did it come to be?

【HARRISON】: Novena started with Moat and myself. We were members of a previous band, Bleeding Oath, and when that band died, we carried the ideas for the music we’d been writing there forward. We developed it further, and that became the ‘Secondary Genesis’ EP. We found Cameron and Dan at University (long before either of them were in any of those bands!), and Ross and Gareth came to us a few years later. Interestingly, Novena has actually existed in the background longer than many of the other bands the members have been in, primarily with the exception of Haken. We just worked away quietly in the background whilst everyone was busy doing awesome things elsewhere! We always loved that our members had so many places to go and keep busy and express themselves, though. You should definitely check out their other bands!

Q3: HAKEN, SLICE THE CAKE, THE HAARP MACHINE, RAVENFACE, BLEEDING OATH

Q4: I feel Frontiers Music usually contract with more melodic hard, and older bands. But what made you contract with them?

【HARRISON】: It’s true that Frontiers are often thought of for their big Legacy acts (Toto, Journey, Whitesnake etc…), and their amazing roster of AOR acts. However, recently they’ve had a real drive to recruit fresh talent around the world, and we’re proud to be part of that! When we were writing Eleventh Hour, we were keen to give it the best platform it could to succeed. In our conversations with Frontiers Records, which were initiated by Ross, we just felt an Affinity (no pun intended) with their ethos, and liked the interest they showed in our music. We’re looking forward to a productive relationship with them going forward

Q5: Ok, let’s talk about your debut-full “Eleventh Hour”. The record starts “2258”, “2259” like countdown to 2300, eleventh hour. What does it mean? Is there any concept behind that?

【HARRISON】: Eleventh Hour is a concept album, for sure. I like to leave some space for people to listen to the album, get to know it and find and apply their own meaning, but I will say that the album is all about questioning our relationship as human beings to death; death is something that connects all of us, but something we often find so difficult to talk about. However, I didn’t want this to be a morbid record through and through, and our real aim was to take stories of people in the last chapter of their lives, and explore what their experiences are like. Each song is either based on a real event, or fictionalised, but follow a character or characters to their end, each one with a different perspective. 22:58 and 22:59 act as a sort of prologue. Have fun guessing the rest!

Q5: “Eleventh Hour”

【HARRISON】: “Eleventh Hour”

Q6: Actually, “Eleventh Hour” is the most epic modern prog record in decade as well as Haken’s “Mountain”. But with Gareth, Novena gains contrast between heavy and ethereal compared with Haken, right?

【HARRISON】: Well, that’s a massive compliment, so thank you very much! Of course, with Ross’ vocals, we’re always going to draw comparisons to Haken, and there are stylistic overlaps. Gareth has his own, totally unique style, which you can hear in Slice the Cake (I encourage your readers to listen to Odyssey to the West – it’s a masterpiece!), and we felt that the two tones they created were distinct, rich and balanced eachother out nicely. It really gave us a wide palette of colours to paint with on this album. We love playing with that duality of light/dark, fragile/destructive etc..

読者には “Odyssey to the West” をお勧めするよ。

Q7: Also, From jazz like “Sail Away” to Flamenco like “Corazon”, diversity of “Eleventh Hour” is incredible! How do you take lot’s of “outside metal” influences?

【HARRISON】: Thank you! As we said earlier, we love all sorts of music. What genre something is isn’t enormously important to us, and we believe there’s something of value In all music. Telling stories and the writing of a ‘song’, rather than just a piece of music, have always been important to be in the compositional process, and I like to try and use whatever tools I think will best serve the delivery of that story. So, for a song like ‘Corazon’, which follows two characters in Cuba, it felt necessary to include that sound to tell that story. Similarly, in something like Prison Walls, where we’re touching on subjects of a splintered psyche, all that chromatic nonsense in the middle felt like the right sound to try and express that distress.

Q8: When I had an interview with Anup Sastry, he said “The entire ‘djent’ idea really just falls under the larger category of progressive metal, in my opinion. Bands have been incorporating small pieces of that style (djent) for years. Progressive metal, by nature, is all about trying to constantly push for new and creative sounds, within metal. So if anything, ‘djent’ to me was just another push for exploration into a bigger umbrella genre.”.
I feel Novena also has djenty aspect somehow. What’s your perspective about Anup’s thought?

【HARRISON】: I haven’t ever thought too deeply on what ‘Djent’ really is, or where the outer borders of it lie. I know that there’s this ongoing conversation of ‘Djent is onomatopoeia’ vs ‘Djent is a genre’, and I often think ‘Well, surely both of those are true?’. That’s the nature of language, and the nature of artforms – they evolve over time. Rarely does the pioneer of an artform get to define their own style in an objective sense; that comes later when people reflect on what they did, view it within the context of other work that happened around it, and begin to categorise things. Even so, I think Djent shares many of the aesthetic qualities of other progressive metal music, and they probably have influenced each other as time has gone by. We definitely love some of those bands that you might describe as Djent – Meshuggah, Tesseract, Vildjharta, Periphery etc – so it’s only natural that some of the elements that make djent djent, end up influencing your songwriting style. Ultimately, it’s all just wiggly air that your ears eat.
