DISC REVIEW “NOCTILUCA”
「”Noctiluca” とは特定の生物発光藻類のラテン語訳で、一般的に “海の輝き” として知られているの。」
海の輝きが “Noctiluca” ならば、HELMS ALEE はさしずめ重の輝きでしょう。彼らがシアトル特有の、深憂なレンズを通して支配する時間と空間。それはまるで深海のごとく暗闇に囲まれながら、差し込む光線に反射する艶やかな色彩、そして栄養価の高い深層音を備えているのですから。
比較の対象はもっぱら MELVINS, KYLESA, BIG BUSINESS でしょうか。もちろん、スラッジーなリフの猛攻とノイジーな実験のラボラトリーは HELMS ALEE のトレードマークですが、同時にリズムのトリックに重きを置いたセクシーなアプローチを考慮すれば、一方でこの海洋トライアングルこそコンテンポラリーな RUSH と言えるのかも知れませんね。

3つの異なる声を持つ HELMS ALEE。ベースの Dana James, ドラムスの Hozoji Matheson-Margullis, そして青一点ギターの Ben Verellen が織りなすボーカルの輪舞は、さながらウミウシのごとく柔軟性と色彩を纏った “Noctiluca” において完全に花開き、重の輝きを一際煌びやかに染めました。
「私は海とそこに住んでいる微生物こそが、私たち人間の日常に見られるよりも生命があることを思い出させてくれると思うのよ。人間の行動や日々の政治を観察すると悲しくなりがちだから。」
Hozoji にとって生物発光藻のビーカーこそがランプであり、灯台の光です。マジカルで神秘的で、仄暗い現代社会に光をもたらす微かな希望。そしてそのイメージは確かに “Noctiluca” の音の葉へと反映されているのです。
“Interachnid” のオープニングはさながら海底火山の目覚めでしょうか。ダイナミック極まるマグマのリズムは、RUSSIAN CIRCLES の最新作にも似て圧倒的な命の躍動を伝えます。フレキシブルに、フリーダムに、イカの虹色のごとく刻々とその表情を変える Hozoji と Dana のシンクロニシティーは、まさしく HELMS ALEE の心臓。一方、続く “Beat Up” でわずか半音の違いを駆使してメジャーとマイナーを不思議に行き来する Ben のギターワークは頭脳なのかも知れませんね。
メタルからハードコア、スラッジ、グランジ、プログレッシブの狭間を漂う海月たちは、そうしてバリトンからソプラノまで時に独唱し、時に合唱し、感情の揺らぎを響かせます。”Spider Jar” で聴かせる荘厳のタペストリーは、その輝きに歌心を加えた HELMS ALEE の現在を如実に伝えています。
「私たちの音楽はライブセッティングでこそ最高の印象を与えるようなものなのよ。なぜなら、ライブパフォーマンスにおける多くの感情の力によって、私たちの歌が意図した通りになっていくと信じているからなの。」
4月に始まる日本ツアーの招聘元、Daymare Recordings 濱田氏が放った 「ライヴを観る前と観た後で決定的に印象が変わるバンド」 の言葉を受けて、Hozoji はライブハウスでバンド、そしてオーディエンスから生じ対流する感情の力をキーワードにあげました。そしてその幾層にも重なるエモーションの潮目は、Endon, alley, BB を巻き込んで一つの大きなうねりを創造するはずです。
今回弊誌では、Hozoji Matheson-Margullis にインタビューを行うことができました。「最近では、ほとんどの女性の親友一人一人が非常に才能があり活動的なミュージシャンなの。彼女たちの多くはヘヴィーロックバンドで演奏しているわ。だから、不均衡の感覚は少なくとも私の世界においては均衡へと移行しているの。私は自分のコミュニティの男性ミュージシャンに受け入れられ、評価されていると自信を持って言うことができるから。」

INTERVIEW WITH HOZOJI MATHESON-MARGULLIS
Q1: About your band name “Helms Alee”, this is a nautical term, included in the commands for tacking a sailboat, right? What made you choose it?
【HOZOJI】: Ben is a sailor. He had a book on sailing that he was really digging into at the time that we were getting ready to play our first show. He presented the name to us and we all liked it.
Q1: HELMS ALEE というバンド名ですが、航海用語でヨットの船首を風上に向けるタッキングのコマンドらしいですね？
【HOZOJI】: Ben がヨット乗りなのよ。ちょうど私たちの最初のショーの準備を整えているころ、彼はセイリングにハマっていてよくその本を読んでいたの。それで HELMS ALEE を提案したのね。私たち全員が気に入ったわ。
Q2: Helms Alee started with Hydra Head and now you contract with Sargent House. I feel these two are really important labels for modern extreme music. What’s your impression about them?
【HOZOJI】: They are both really awesome labels that we feel honored to have been able to work with.

【HOZOJI】: 2つとも素晴らしいレーベルだわ。彼らと仕事をすることが出来てとても誇りに思っているの。
Q3: So, your first Japan Tour is announced! Do you know Japanese bands alley, Endon, and BB you’ll play with? What do you expect for our country?
【HOZOJI】: We were lucky enough to play some shows with Endon when they came over to the US. They are a very cool band! The other two bands will be new to us. We are very excited! We don’t really know what to expect from Japan. We hope to play fun shows that allow us to meet new people. We hope to eat good Japanese food and experience Japanese culture.
Q3: 初の日本ツアーが決まりました。共演する alley, Endon, BB についてはご存知ですか？
【HOZOJI】: Endon とは幸運なことに、彼らがアメリカに来た時何度か共演したことがあるの。彼らはとてもクールなバンドよ！他の2つのバンドは私たちにとって新たな出会いね。とても興奮するわ！
日本で楽しいショーが出来たら良いわね。新たな友人に出会えるような。そして美味しい日本食や日本の文化を体験したいわね。
Q4: Hamada-san of Daymare Recordings said to me, “Helms Alee is a band that definitely changes the impression before and after watching the live.” Do you agree with him?
【HOZOJI】: I would say that our music is the kind that comes across best in a live setting. I believe a lot of the power of emotion in live performance is what makes our songs come across the way we intended them to.

Q5: After Japan Tour, you’ll play at Roadburn by the curation of Emma Ruth Rundle. What’s your perspective about you were chosen by Emma?
【HOZOJI】: Emma is a long time friend of our band. She is an incredible artist and a very kind hearted soul. We are honored that she chose us. And we are honored to call her a friend.
Q5: 日本ツアーの後、Emma Ruth Rundle のキュレーションによって Roadburn への出演も決定していますね？
【HOZOJI】: 私たちは Emma と長い間友人なのよ。素晴らしいアーティストで、とても優しい魂を持った人物よ。彼女が私たちを選んでくれて光栄だわ。そして彼女を友人と呼べることもね。
Q6: I really love your new record “Noctiluca”, from music, artwork to lyrics. And maybe “Noctiluca” is bio-luminescent marine algae on the artwork right? It seems most of your albums focus on oceanic type themes, but why are you inspired by oceanic tiny livings and nature?
【HOZOJI】: That is correct, Noctiluca is the Latin word for a particular bioluminescent algae, commonly known as the Sea Sparkle. The album artwork is a photograph of sand under a microscope. As far as inspiration goes, I find the ocean and the microorganisms that live there to be a reminder that there is more to life than what we see in our everyday human existence. It’s easy to get sad when observing human behavior and day to day politics. So knowing that that world under the water is so different than our own and is also right here on earth sharing all the same resources and sharing the same will to survive and thrive calms me down and gives me perspective.
Q6: アートワークから音楽、リリックまで、最新作 “Noctiluca” は素晴らしいですね！
“Noctiluca” とはアートワークに光る生物発光性の海藻だそうですね？これまでも HELMS ALEE は海や自然をテーマに扱い続けています。
【HOZOJI】: その通りよ。”Noctiluca” とは特定の生物発光藻類のラテン語訳で、一般的に “海の輝き” として知られているの。ただ、アルバムのアートワークは、顕微鏡で見た砂の写真よ。
インスピレーションに関してだけど、私は海とそこに住んでいる微生物こそが、私たち人間の日常に見られるよりも生命があることを思い出させてくれると思うのよ。人間の行動や日々の政治を観察すると悲しくなりがちだから。だから水中の世界を知ることは私たちの世界を知ることとは大きく異なるの。
同じ地球上で同じリソースを共有し、同じ意志を共有して生き残り繁栄していることが私を落ち着かせ、新たな視点を与えてくれるのよ。
Q7: Of course, there are sludge, doom, post-hardcore, but also this record has really beautiful sounding elements in every song. I mean, it seems you focus on vocals more than ever, right? With that, I feel you become more close to Rush because you have both experimental and catchy aspect simultaneously. Do you agree that?
【HOZOJI】: We collaborated more then ever on the vocals for this album. We also had a producer/engineer that was very vocal focused. Aside from that we really approached the album the same way we always do. So any other new styles or feelings that come across are just a product of the natural growth process of our band.
Q7: もちろん、スラッジ、ドゥーム、ポストハードコアはアルバムの根幹でしょうが、同時に実に美麗な瞬間、メロディーも様々な場所に散りばめられています。
以前の作品よりもボーカルにフォーカスしたレコードだと言えるでしょうか？
【HOZOJI】: このアルバムのために私たちは、これまで以上にボーカルのコラボレートを進めたわ。それに今回のプロデューサー/エンジニア (R.E.M. を手がけた Sam Bell) はとてもボーカルに心血を注ぐ人物だったの。
ただ、それ以外については全くいつものようにアプローチをしたわ。だから、ボーカル以外にもたらされた新たなスタイルやフィーリングは、ただバンドとして自然な成長の証なのよ。
Q8: This is for Dana and Hozoji. When I had an interview with Serena of Svalbard, she said “Personally, I have suffered so much sexism in the metal scene that I think the time is right to kick against it and make an outwardly feminist metal album. This album is my reply to anyone who makes negative comments to a girl onstage”. What’s your perspective about her opinion and sexism in the extreme music scene or daily life?
【HOZOJI】: I think her feelings are valid and she is a hero for using music as her weapon against oppression. There is no denying that the heavy music world has traditionally been a boys club. And I certainly have experienced sexism in my 23 years as a woman in the music scene. That being said, I have also been lucky enough to grow up in a part of the US that is relatively progressive. So I have been sheltered from much of the sexism that women experience in other parts of the country/world. I grew up playing with mostly male musicians. None of them ever made me feel like I was less valuable because I was a female. And these days, pretty much every single one of my best female friends is an extremely talented and active musician. Many of them play in heavy rock bands. So the feeling of imbalance is shifting to an equilibrium in my world. I can say with confidence that I feel accepted and valued by the male musicians in my community.
Q8: SVALBARD の Serena にインタビューを行った時、彼女は 「個人的に、私はメタルシーンで多くのセクシャルハラスメントに苦しんできたの。だから、それに立ち向かい表面上はフェミニストのメタルアルバムを作るべき時が来たと思ったのよ。このアルバムは、ステージに女の子が立つことにネガティブなコメントを寄せる人たちに対する私からの返答よ。」 と語ってくれました。
【HOZOJI】: 彼女の感情は正当なもので、弾圧に対する武器として音楽を使うヒーローだと思うわ。ヘヴィーミュージックの世界が伝統的 “ボーイズクラブ” だったことは否定できないもの。そして、私は女性として音楽シーンにおいて、確かに23年間で性差別を経験してきたの。
そうは言っても、私は幸運にもアメリカの比較的進歩的な場所で育ったわ。だから、私個人は女性が他の国や地域で経験するであろう性差別の多くからは守られてきたの。私は主に男性のミュージシャンと一緒にプレイして育ったの。そして彼らの誰も、私が女性であるからあまり価値がないと思わせることはなかったわ。

Q9: Is there any bands you are emphasiz with now?
【HOZOJI】: Wild Powwers, Sandrider, Red Fang, Russian Circles, Big Business just to name a small fraction.
Q9: 最後に、今あなたたちが共感を覚えているバンドを教えていただけますか？
【HOZOJI】: WILD POWWERS, SANDRIDER, RED FANG, RUSSIAN CIRCLES, BIG BUSINESS…ちょっと思いついた名前を挙げただけだけどね。
