デンマーク、フェロー諸島の雄大な自然、神秘的な伝承、豊かな感情に囲まれて育った IOTUNN のメンバーにとって、音楽とは変化を続ける人生を表現する手段です。その逆もまた真なり。滴り落ちる音の雫には、表現者の絶え間ない営みが宿っているのです。

Lars Ulrich のルーツにして KING DIAMOND の母国デンマークは、古くから様々なメタルの交差点でした。PRETTY MAIDS, DIZZY MIZZ LIZZY, ARTILLERY, SATURUNAS, MANTICOLA。彼らが纏った、常に変化を誘う自然と空間、時間、感情の多様な繋がりは、今、VOLBEAT, MYRKUR, VOLA, MOL といったデニッシュ・メタル新たな波へと増幅されながら引き継がれているのです。

INTERVIEW WITH JESPER GRAS
Q1: This is the first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about the band and yourself? What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up? Who was your musical hero at that time?
【JESPER】: Hi! We are five guys spread across Denmark and The Faroe Islands who love metal music and music in general. Bjørn, Jens Nicolai and I go way back and in 2018-19 Jón and Eskil joined IOTUNN on vocals and bass guitar to complete the circle. Besides loving music we travel in nature, read novels and just get inspired by the many wonders of life.
I began playing classical guitar when I was 9 years of age and picked up the electric guitar some years later. Early on I began to write music and began thinking about having, so in many ways it has been a dream since childhood. In my childhood it was Metallica, Iron Maiden, Guns ´n´ Roses, AC/DC, Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osbourne and so on who were the huge huge heroes to me. My older brother Jens Nicolai introduced me to all these wonderful bands and often watched the metal shows on MTV and VH1 back then with his friends, and as I am almost five years younger I would sit as a young boy with him and his friends and watch metal videos like Enter Sandman or November Rain and it just blew my mind away. So these bands were the first heroes.
Q1: 本誌初登場です！まずはあなたの音楽的なバックグラウンドからお話ししていただけますか？
【JESPER】: やあ！僕たちはデンマークとフェロー諸島出身の、メタルミュージックと音楽全般を愛する5人の男たちだ。Bjørn、Jens Nicolai と僕は昔からの付き合いで、2018-19年には Jón と Eskil がボーカルとベースで加わり、IOTUNN の輪が完成したんだ。僕たちは音楽が好きなのはもちろんだけど、自然の中を旅したり、小説を読んだり、人生のさまざまな不思議に刺激を受けているんだよ。
僕は9歳のときにクラシックギターを始め、それから数年後にエレキギターを手にしたね。早くから作曲を始め、音楽で生計を立てることを夢見ていたから、いろいろな意味でこのバンドは子供の頃からの夢だと言えるだろうな。
僕の子供時代には、METALLICA, IRON MAIDEN, GUNS N’ ROSES, AC/DC, BLACK SABBATH, Ozzy Osbourne なんかが、僕にとってのヒーローだっま。兄の Jens Nicolai は、僕にこういった素晴らしいバンドを紹介してくれたし、当時 MTV や VH1 で放送されていたメタル系の番組も彼の友人と一緒によく見ていたんだ。僕は5歳近く年下だから、幼い頃から彼や彼の友人と一緒に座って、”Enter Sandman” や “November Rain” みたいなメタル系のビデオを見ては、心を揺さぶられていたんだよね。彼らが最初のヒーローだったよ。
Q2: The name of the band Iotunn is a word I’ve never heard before. What does it mean to you?
【JESPER】: The word is Old Norse for giant. To me it represents a force of nature and cosmos that enforce constant change and transformation and thereby also human humility, curiosity and openness in life as such and in being creative.
Q2: バンド名の IOTUNN という言葉は初めて聞きましたよ。どんな意味が込められているのですか？
【JESPER】: IOTUNN とは、古ノルド語で “巨人” を意味する言葉なんだ。僕にとってこの言葉は、絶え間ない変化と変革を強いる自然と宇宙の力を表していて、それによって人間の謙虚さ、好奇心、そして人生や創造性における開放性をも表そうとしているんだよ。
Q3: Danish metal used to be the home country of King Diamond, Dizzy Mizz Lizzy was very popular in Japan and nowadays young bands like Vola and Mol are getting a lot of attention. How do you feel about the Danish metal scene?
【JESPER】: I feel very good about the scene these days! If we start with the legends you mention King Diamond has a new record coming. Can’t wait for that one! And Dizzy Mizz Lizzy has just released an amazing dark rock album – Alter Echo. So those bands are still going strong.
At the moment I think we see a Danish metal scene that is really in a good state and constantly on the move, and that is really enjoyable to be a part of. Myrkur is to me the emblematic artist of this wave. I think she dared to take music to places we haven’t seen Danish metal artists do before and she showed the importance of connecting music with nature, narratives crossing time boundaries and feelings, and these things are important elements in creating music as such and also in this Danish metal wave I think. The manyfold connections to all these things that co-create and inspire music are widening I think, and the result is better music and the international attention turning towards Danish metal.
Q3: デンマークのメタルといえば、KING DIAMOND の母国で、DIZZY MIZZ LIZZY は日本でも人気がありましたし、さらに最近は VOLA や MOL といった新鋭も台頭しています。
【JESPER】: 最近の我が国のメタルシーンにはとても満足しているんだ。まず、君が挙げた伝説的なアーティストについてだけど、KING DIAMOND は新譜をリリースするよね！待ち遠しいよ。そして、DIZZY MIZZ LIZZY は、素晴らしいダーク・ロックアルバム “.Alter Echo” をリリースしたばかりだね。だから、両者ともまだまだ健在なわけさ。
今のところ、デンマークのメタルシーンは非常に良い状態にあり、常に動き続けているから、そこに参加していて本当に楽しいんだよ。MYRKUR は、僕にとってこの波を象徴するアーティストなんだ。彼女は、音楽をこれまでのデンマークのメタルアーティストが到達したことのないような場所までに持っていこうとしたんだよ。そして、音楽と自然、時間軸を超えた物語、感情を結びつけることの重要性を示したと思うね。
そういった事柄は、音楽を作る上で重要な要素で、このデンマークの新たなメタル・ウェーブのトレードマークとも言える。音楽を共創し、インスピレーションを与えてくれる自然や感情、空間、時間、これらすべてのものへの多様なつながりが今この国では広がっていると思うんだ。
その結果、より良い音楽が生まれ、デンマークのメタルに国際的な注目が集まっているんだよね。
Q4: The band originally played space rock, how did you break into the world of metal?
【JESPER】: Well, the whole space rock trip was a matter of some years back in 2007 and until 2010-ish where I really got into 60’s and 70’s rock music and focused entirely on this. So the formation of the band back in 2009 was built upon the love for this music. We all had the love for metal back then also, but it wasn´t until Jens Nicolai joined in 2011 that we really began to embrace metal and make all new symbioses of musical spheres. So the love for space rock really never stopped as we still listen to and explore these decades of genius music, and I still think that the energies from all those bands inflicts the IOTUNN DNA to this day and will keep on doing as we move forward. Just as in Mastodon the space rock has a very special place in the IOTUNN heart.
Q4: もともと IOTUNN はスペース・ロックをプレイしていたそうですが、なぜメタルの道に進んだのでしょうか？
【JESPER】: 僕が60年代や70年代のロック音楽に夢中になったスペース・ロックの旅は、2007年から2010年頃までの数年間で、集中して取り組んでいたよ。だから、2009年のバンド結成は、スペース・ロックへの愛に基づいていたんだよ。
当時も、僕たちは皆、メタルへの愛を持っていたけど、2011年に Jens Nicolai が加入してからはよりメタルを受け入れ、音楽領域の新たな共生を図るようになったんだ。だから、今でも僕たちのスペース・ロックへの愛は止まることなく、数十年に渡る奇跡の音楽を聴き続け、探求し続けているんだよ。
そして、スペース・ロックのバンドから受け取るエネルギーは、今もなお IOTUNN の DNA に影響を与え続けていると思うし、僕たちがこれから前進していく中でもそうあり続けるだろうな。MASTODON がそうであったように、スペース・ロックは IOTUNN の心の中の特別な場所にあるんだよ。
Q5: “Access All Worlds” is a big step forward from “The Wizard Falls”: spacy prog-death like Cynic, atmospheres like Katatonia, black metal and power metal. It’s an access to the whole world of metal. Is that the intention behind the title?
【JESPER】: In this regard I think the title reflects our way of being creative which is really founded in the immense unfoldings we have experienced through life by listening to music, trekking in nature, being with our loved ones and so on. So it is a matter of being free to do whatever feels right creatively and in this freedom break all the boundaries that are constantly being presented and enforced in the world.
Q5: “Access All Worlds” は EP “The Wizard Falls” からも大きな進化を遂げていますね。CYNIC のようなスペーシーなプログ・デス、KATATONIA のアトモスフィア、それにブラック・メタル、パワー・メタルまで、メタルの “世界すべてにアクセスする” ようなサウンドですね？
【JESPER】: このタイトルは、音楽を聴いたり、自然の中をトレッキングしたり、愛する人たちと一緒に過ごすといった、人生を通じて経験してきた広大な展開の中、その中で生じる僕たちの創造性のあり方を反映していると思う。
つまり、創造的に正しいと思うことは何でも行うという自由。この自由の中で僕たちは、世界で常に提示され、強制されているすべての境界線を破ろうという意思表示なんだ。
Q6: The addition of Jon Aldara from Barren Earth and Hamferd seems to have refined the band’s melodies. It’s a great use of his talent, would you agree?
【JESPER】: Totally! I was a huge fan of Jón and Hamferd before we contacted him in early 2018 to ask if he would be interested in joining IOTUNN. I think he is up there among our generations very best metal singers so to have all his magic completing IOTUNNs music is really one of the most enjoyable things!
Q6: BARREN EARTH や HAMFERD で知られるボーカル Jon Aldara を加えたことで、バンドのメロディーが非常に洗練されましたよね？
【JESPER】: 完全にその通りだね! 2018年の初め、IOTUNN に参加してくれないかと彼に連絡する前から、僕は Jón と HAMFERD の大ファンだったんだ。
彼は僕たちの世代の中でも最高のメタル・シンガーだと思っているから、彼の魔法で IOTUNN の音楽を完成させられるのは、本当に楽しいことだよね。
Q7: The listener wants to know about the themes of this album, which is very mystical and spiritual. The wonderful artwork is also symbolic of the universe and philosophy, right?
【JESPER】: I think there are many layers of themes and that these are all intertwined in different ways. It is a story about daring space travellers going on a voyage to seek new truths and hopefully solutions to all the old ones because the old ones have resulted in a near apocalyptic state back home. On this voyage they meet different worlds that represent and reflect on both questions of how to have a healthy and sustainable civilization and society but also the many stages of human life that we all experience in our own way. Also, as mentioned before, the album is about creativity to me. And I think that a creativity that really sets out to explore and be free sheds light on civilization, society and human life and vice versa. So it all kind of lives and breaths together.
Q7: 非常に神秘的でスピリチュアルなこの作品のテーマを教えていただけますか？アートワークは宇宙や哲学を象徴しているようですが？
【JESPER】: テーマは何層にもわたっていて、それらがさまざまな形で絡み合っている。この物語は、大胆な宇宙旅行者が、新しい真実の探求と、古い問題の解決策を求めて航海に出るというストーリーだ。古い問題が原因で、彼の故郷はほとんど終末的な状態に陥っているんだよ。
この航海で彼らは、健全で持続可能な文明や社会のあり方に疑問を呈しながら、誰もがそれぞれの方法で経験する人間の人生の様々な段階を表現し、考察する様々な世界を旅するんだ。
そして、先に述べたように、このアルバムは僕にとって創造性にフォーカスした作品だ。真に探求し自由であろうとする創造性は、文明や社会、人間の生活に光を当てるもので、逆に言えばそういった場所からこそ創造性は生まれるんだ。つまり、すべては生命で、共に呼吸しているんだからね。
Q8: The metal world is expanding, breaking down more and more of its boundaries. Will your diverse music be a benchmark for the 2020s?
【JESPER】: I think diversity is something that is really thriving in metal music and has been for decades. But it seems that it is something that is evolving more and more. The immense exploration that was so essential to rock music in the 60’s and 70’s are now an essential part of big parts of metal music, so my answer must be yes and I think that makes the coming years and decades of metal music extremely exciting.
Q8: メタル世界は拡大を続け、仰るように、すべての境界線を打ち破ろうとしていますね。IOTUNN の多様な音楽が、2020年代を牽引する光になるでしょうか？
【JESPER】: 多様性というのは、メタルではとても盛んで、何十年も前からそうだったと思っている。だけど、その傾向はますます進化しているように思えてならないんだ。
60年代、70年代のロックに不可欠だった膨大な探求心は、今ではメタルの大部分にとって不可欠な要素となっているよ。だから、僕の答えは「イエス」でなければならないし、それはメタルミュージックのこれからの数年、数十年を本当にエキサイティングなものにしていくと思う。

Oh yes, there are numerous albums but I will try.
The first one must be Metallica’s Ride The Lightning because the opening intro and riff in Fight Fire With Fire and the whole song of Fade To Black really were the songs that opened up the universe for me back in my childhood.
The second one must be Iron Maiden´s Rock in Rio live album. In my childhood and early teens I loved to listen to and watch all these amazing live DVD concerts being released but this one must be the one I’ve seen the most and it has influenced me in so many ways.
The third one represents the whole opening towards the world of Scandinavian metal with its many many amazing bands. To me it was the 90´s In Flames records that did this to me, and if I have to pick one of those I think it must be Whoracle. Those 90´s In Flames albums really got me into the whole swedish melo-death scene that would eventually take me across the border to the Norwegian metal scene.
I have to mention an album representing my love for Norwegian metal in general. And because this band was the first Norwegian band I really got into back in 2004-ish it must be Dimmu Borgir´s Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia which opened the world to Arcturus, Borknagar, Immortal and so on.
The fifth record must be of one of my all time favourite bands, and to me one of the most innovative and important bands of the last twenty years, Mastodon. Fortunately, I´ve been on the Mastodon ride since the very beginning so it must be a choice between Remission and Leviathan. But ultimately I will have to pick Leviathan. What an album and it blew me away and still does. I was so lucky to see them live back in 2005 on their Leviathan tour and that is still one of the best and most intense concerts I’ve seen to this day.
最初は METALLICA の “Ride The Lightning”。”Fight Fire With Fire” の冒頭のイントロとリフ、そして”Fade To Black”は、子供の頃の僕に宇宙を切り開いてくれた曲だ。
2つ目は、IRON MAIDEN の “Rock in Rio” のライブアルバム。子供の頃から10代前半にかけて、リリースされる素晴らしいライブDVDコンサートを聴いたり見たりするのが好きだったけど、このアルバムは一番見て、僕に多くの影響を与えてくれたよね。
3つ目は、多くの素晴らしいバンドが存在するスカンジナビア・メタルが世界に向けて開かれたことを表している。僕にとっては、90年代の IN FLAMES のレコードがそうなんだけど、その中から一つを選ぶとすれば、”Whoracle” だね。90年代の IN FLAMES のアルバムは、僕をスウェーデンのメロデス・シーンに引き込み、やがて国境を越えてノルウェーのメタル・シーンへと導いてくれたんだ。
ノルウェー・メタルへの愛を代表するアルバムを挙げなければならないね。このバンドは2004年頃に僕が本当に夢中になった最初のノルウェーのバンド、DIMMU BORGIR の”Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia” だよ。このバンドが、ARCTURUS, BORKNAGAR, IMMORTAL への道を開いてくれた。
5枚目のレコードは、僕がずっと好きなバンドの一つで、僕にとっては過去20年間で最も革新的で重要なバンドの一つである MASTODON。幸いなことに、僕は最初から彼らに傾倒しているので、”Remission” と “Leviathan” のどちらかを選ばなければならないね。最終的には “Leviathan” かな。とても素晴らしいアルバムで、圧倒されたし、今でもそうだ。2005年の “Leviathan” ツアーで彼らのライブを見ることができたのはとても幸運で、それは今でも僕見た中で最高で最も激しいコンサートの一つだね。
