DISC REVIEW “THE THULE GRIMOIRES”

THE RUINS OF BEVERAST “THE THULE GRIMOIRES” : 10/10

INTERVIEW WITH ALEXANDER VON MEILENWALD

Q1: You are a pioneer and a legend of German Black Metal. When you started Nagelfar, how did you feel about playing Black Metal from Scandinavia in Germany?

【ALEX】: Actually, I never really had any point of contact with Scandinavia before the Black Metal movement was coming up. Norway was surrounded by something mystic, we didn’t really know much of this country, and somehow it was fitting perfectly that an unholy, unfamiliar artistic vision like that of Black Metal was started in this country. And then, when the BM movement started, we were eager to learn as much as possible about Norway. Suddenly, almost everybody concurred in admiring the creations that emerged from Scandinavia. You know, we were teenagers and fairly easily manipulable, and an extreme movement coming from obscure Scandinavia, that was surrounded by kind of an occult aesthetic and an almost radical anonymity and secretiveness, seemedoverwhelmingly fascinating to us. We had a Black Metal scene rather quickly then in Germany, and not all the new German bands were geared to the Scandinavian style. But Nagelfar were. We were deeply into Burzum, Darkthrone, Mayhem, Emperor, Immortal. And a few less knownbands, Manes, Strid, Nästrond. To us it was obvious that those bands would stand as our main inspiration, because we almost started from a scratch. Our guitarist and me had played in a Death Metal band before Nagelfar, but we were eager to get new inspirations. And still, when we had finished the first Nagelfar releases, I think we finally had created something different, despite the huge and obvious influences.

Q2: The world of German Black Metal is blossoming at the moment, what makes this scene so special and unique from your point of view?

【ALEX】: I don’t wanna sound negative here, but I don’t think that Germany is really a leading force in Black Metal these days. My favorite Black Metal bands from our country have always been Lunar Aurora and Katharsis, and they’re both disbanded since quite some time. And meanwhile, Germany has been a bit outperformed by other countries, lots of bands are inactive. We have a strong Death Metal movement instead, I mean serious Death Metal, like Nekrovault, Sulphur Aeon, Venenum, Drowned, also Necros Christos, although disbanded as well.

Q3: Nordic folk in the spirit of black metal like Wardruna and Heilung is very popular in Scandinavia now. Their spirituality on ancient myths, philosophies and old instruments seems to resonate with The Ruins of Beverast, would you agree?

【ALEX】: I agree they are related in terms of drama, if I may say so, and also a bit arrangement-wise. In my view, Heilung actually display a stronger Dead Can Dance- or “world music-” influence than a particular “Nordic” vibe in some parts, but I may be mistaken here. I enjoy Wardruna a lot, their vocal arrangements are very powerful and atmospheric, and what I like them both for is, they are able to build musical landscapes that breathe the spirit of the North. I mean with regards to the landscape they are located in. They are able to give nature an audial expression. That is really difficult to accomplish, which I know, because I’m trying to do that myself. And to achieve it, a certain instrumentation, rhythmic and vocal arrangements are needed, and here’s where I certainly agree that you can draw a bow to how The Ruins Of Beverast arrange their songs, indeed.

Q4: Looking back, how do you feel about your decision to stop Nagelfar and start The Ruins of Beverast?

【ALEX】: It was the only possible decision. As much as I learnt from Nagelfar, and as many irretrievable memories I have from the times we led that band, as important or even indispensable they were for my creative progress – it was impossible to pursue them. Around the millennium, the communication between our guitarist Zorn and me was severely troubled, it was in fact fairly surprising that we managed to finish “Virus West”. The reason for these difficulties lay in our personalities, we were both very stubborn about music and development of the band, and while in the beginning, we shared a common view upon what we wanted to achieve, things changed throughout the years. Zorn had always been the more down-to-earth musician, he was writing prominent, melodic riffs, while I was voting for a darker and more unmelodic, minatorystyle, based on soundscapes and atmosphere. Both of us had stepped beyond the point where we could have gone back and concede each other, our teamwork was poisoned. When we met years after the split, we had a very good and respectful conversation, but back in the days it was impossible to straighten things, and it was obvious that Nagelfar would be laid to rest. As I wasn’t the common Heavy Metal musician and had very weird and abstract ideas of my future musical ambitions, I concluded rather soon that my only option was working alone. I had been teaching myself all relevant instruments during my time in Nagelfar, so it didn’t really appear as an issue. And I never had any regrets about this.

Q5: Every time you work on The Ruins of Beverast it seems like you’ve reached the pinnacle of creativity, but with your next album you’re going to go beyond that place, aren’t you? Is the title and blast beat, tremolo riff of Black Metal still important to you?

【ALEX】: There is one thing important to say: I do _never_ set the previous album as a quality standard for the next album. I’d feel uncomfortably stressed if I had to strive for thegoal of “getting better and better” with each album, that’sno working mode for me. In fact, I always start completely afresh. I always develop a vision for the specific new album, and that is set as the horizon for the whole creative process to follow. And like I said, it is entirely irrespective of the previous output. “Exuvia” had a different songwriting approach than “The Thule Grimoires” and all older albums. I do not really have in mind if anything that I’m doing follows the rules of Black Metal or not. I have been doing that in the Nagelfar days of course, but The Ruins Of Beverast were meant to build huge landscapes of sound from the beginning, and I guess I just intuitively tried to ignore anything that felt as a limitation. And the first and foremost limitations are the rules of a genre. Which, on the other hand, does not mean it’s not important for me. I mean, if you take a listen to the beginning of “Ropes Into Eden”, it is a fairly classic Black Metal part, but again, extended by some unfamiliar elements. This all happens mechanically, I have my musical background which, I guess, is always presentwhen writing songs, but never as the sole landmark.

Q5: THE RUINS OF BEVERAST

Q6: This time there was a particularly strong influence from the pop and synth music of your upbringing, Massive Attack, Underworld and post-punk. In a way, are you returning to your own roots?

【ALEX】: Maybe, yes. But still, I always have these impacts returning at some point in my musical life. It was also present on Nagelfar’s “Srontgorrth”-album and on earlier The Ruins Of Beverast releases, at least rudimentary. And on “The Thule Grimoires”, I guess the main reason that brings people to identify a non-metallic influence here are the clean vocals. But they weren’t planned like this beforehand, it just happened in the studio and what mainly the idea of the producer Michael Zech. Some people also seem to think that the intro of the album is a synth, which is untrue, it’s a guitar. As well as most parts in “Mammothpolis”. In fact, we never used fewer synths than on the new album, now that I think about it, haha. But of course you’re right, I would agree that, the older I get, the older are the musical ingredients I seem to resort to, at least when it comes to the elements outside of Metal.

Q7: Type O Negative’s albums tend to have green artwork, and “The Thule Grimoires” is therefore reminiscent of their masterpieces. Your singing style and gothic touches also remind me of Peter Steel at times, would you agree?

【ALEX】: The artwork was planned to be greyscale in the beginning, but while working on the demos for the songs, I thought it should get a connection to the harsh face of nature, and I thought of a natural, dirty green. It had nothing to do with Type O Negative. Now don’t get me wrong, I truly respect this band, and I think Pete Steele has been one of the most extraordinary, outstanding people of “our” side of music. His apocalyptic sarcasm was unique, his voice as well. But it was completely inimitable. If you try to imitate a vocal style like this, you _must_ fail. It is so very distinctive and yet extreme at the same time, that every attempt to copy it can just sound like a poor shot. And that’s why I never tried to imitate him. The beginning of “Deserts To Bind And Defeat” was meant to feature my voice in a tone as deep as possible. And that’s what I tried, no more, no less. If anyone thinks it sounds like Steele, that is of course a huge compliment to me, but I don’t think it does …

Q7: TYPE O NEGATIVE

FIVE ALBUMS THAT CHANGED ALEX’S LIFE

DEPESCHE MODE “VIOLATOR”

My first serious and conscious occupation with the composition, arrangement, and production of music in general

NAPALM DEATH “SCUM”

My very first contact with extreme music

MY DYING BRIDE “AS THE FLOWER WITHERS”

One of the first and most intensive influences of my songwriting. This one brought the feeling of slow-motioned unease into The Ruins Of Beverast, and I still think it to be one of the most saturnine Metal albums ever made.

DARKTHRONE “A BLAZE IN THE NORTHERN SKY”

My very first contact with Black Metal

DEAD CAN DANCE “WITHIN THE REALM OF A DYING SUN”

The blueprint of how to let “mere” music become a whole universe. I never heard music like this before, and afterwards.

MESSAGE FOR JAPAN

Well, in almost 30 years of being an active musician this was my first contact to Japan ever. So, thank you so very much for that, it’s my honor! And in addition, may I say that we are very certainly, not just since yesterday, dreaming of coming to Japan as soon as it can ever be possible. Although we’re certainly aware of the aftermaththat we all may suffer from, when this pandemic horror trip may be finally over. My deepest gratitude to all of you people for the support and sincere interest, fare thee well!
