愛と勇気とファンタジーのパワー・メタルはこれまで、何度か絶滅の危機に瀕してきました。90年代に世界を覆ったダウナーな霧は、チェコの英雄 Libor Křivák が語るようにもちろんこのジャンルを疲弊させました。ただし、後にシンフォニックなオーロラが生き残ったパワー・メタルの勇壮なメロディまでも抱きしめた時、私たちはその美しさの裏で画一化というそこはかとない恐怖もまた、感じていたのです。
「最近、メタル・オペラはたくさんあるけど、本物のパワー・メタルのサウンドトラックは今まで誰も作っていないから、このサウンドトラックのアイデアは気に入っているよ。”Marco Polo” はパワー・メタルとしての力強さを第一に考えていたんだ」
チェコという西洋と東洋の交差点に居を構える SYMPHONITY が、マルコ・ポーロの東方見聞録をアルバムのテーマとして選んだのは、ある意味自然な流れだったのかもしれません。そうして、マルコの足跡を辿ったこのアルバムには、第三世界が勃興した現代のヘヴィ・メタル世界を投影するかのように、様々な国のミュージシャン、伝統音楽、伝統楽器が登場します。当然、バンド名が表す通り、この作品はたしかにオペラのような荘厳な “シンフォニー” を全身に纏っています。
ただし、それでも、このアルバムはワールド・ミュージックにも、シンフォニックなオペラにも、全く飲み込まれてはいません。重要なのは、パワー・メタルとしての雄々しきカタルシス、絶対的な扇情力。かつて、GAMMA RAY が “Land of the Free” で見せつけたパワー・メタルの自由、本物のメタル・オペラを SYMPHONITY はモリコーネに敬意を表しながら受け継いでいきます。Kiske と Kai のダブル・シンガーだったあのアルバムと同様に、2人の歌い手が丁々発止その個性を漲らせながら。
「この物語は、マルコが父や叔父とともに通過した古代の国々。そのエキゾチックな楽器やハーモニー、音階を発見するとてもユニークな機会を与えてくれたんだ。どんな音楽にも、それぞれの魔法があるからね。例えば、中東の音楽にはたくさんの音階がある。他にも様々な音楽が登場する。チベットのホルンは人間の足の骨でできているし、モンゴルの喉歌はとても独創的だよ」
とはいえ、SYMPHONITY が培ったジャーマン・メタルの骨子は、ホーミーや馬頭琴、人骨のチベタン・ホルンにウード、ダルシマーといったシルクロードの民族楽器で巧みに肉付けされ、リスナーを30年の果てしない旅路へと誘います。そうして、シンフォニックであると同時に豊かな質感を備えたこのアルバムは、最終的に重くメタルらしいリフと向き合うことでマルコの苦難を巧みに表現しているのです。
ある意味で、”Malco Polo” はシンフォニックとパワー・メタル真の橋渡しと言えるのかもしれませんね。もちろん、マルコ・ポーロの母国イタリアの至宝 RHAPSODY、そしてエンニオ・モリコーネに対する愛情をも十二分に示しながら。風格と威厳、そして逞しさを備えたメタル・サウンドトラックの堂々たる帰還。
今回弊誌では、ギターマスター Libor Křivák にインタビューを行うことができました。「君が僕たち以外のチェコ共和国のバンドを知らなくても不思議はないんだ。チェコではメタルはとても人気があって、Masters of Rock や Metalfest のような大きなフェスティバルも開催される。だけど、ほとんどすべての国内のバンドの問題は、チェコの歌詞を使っ”ビール・メタル” のような音楽を演奏していて、海外で人気が出るチャンスがないことなんだ」 どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH LIBOR KRIVAK
Q1: You are the only Czech metal band that comes to mind, but can you start by telling us how you got into metal in a country where it is not so popular?
【LIBOR】: Honestly, I’m not surprised that you don’t know any band from the Czech Republic except us. In our country, metal is actually quite popular, we have big festivals like Masters of Rock or Metalfest here, but the problem with almost all of the domestic bands is that they play some kind of “beer metal” with Czech lyrics without any chance to get popular abroad. For example, the most successful band called Kabat is selling out big arenas but once they entered Eurovision contest they didn’t reach any success. Considering the melodic power metal scene, the situation is quite sad. Except us, there are just a few other, mostly unsigned, bands. To be honest, I have some doubts about quality of their songwriting, moreover, the common problem of a good singer is apparent.
Q1: まずお聞きしたいのですが、チェコではメタルは盛んなんでしょうか？
【LIBOR】: 正直なところ、君が僕たち以外のチェコ共和国のバンドを知らなくても不思議はないんだ。チェコではメタルはとても人気があって、Masters of Rock や Metalfest のような大きなフェスティバルも開催される。だけど、ほとんどすべての国内のバンドの問題は、チェコの歌詞を使っ”ビール・メタル” のような音楽を演奏していて、海外で人気が出るチャンスがないことなんだ。
例えば、KABAT という最も成功したバンドは、国内では大きなアリーナをソールドアウトさせているけど、ユーロビジョン・コンテストに出場した後でも、世界的には何の成功も収められなかった。メロディック・パワー・メタルのシーンを考えると、この状況はとても悲しい。僕ら以外には、ほとんど未契約のバンドが数組いるだけだ。正直なところ、彼らのソングライティングの質には疑問があるし、良いシンガーがいないという共通の問題もあるんだよな。
Q2: The Czech Republic has produced great classical musicians such as Smetana and Dvorak, as well as beautiful Morava folk songs and the city of Prague. Do these Czech traditions influence your music?
【LIBOR】: Of course, classical music has influenced me as a composer. Bedrich Smetana together with Antonin Dvorak are the biggest names in our country but I wouldn’t overestimate their influence that much. Also, the Moravian folk music is all around me but I don’t think it has any major effect on my compositions. By the way, there is another Czech band called Silent Stream Of Godless Elegy which is trying to combine Moravian folk songs and metal music but I have to admit, I’ve never been too interested about them.
Q2: チェコはスメタナやドボルザークといった偉大なクラシック作曲家を多く輩出しています。美しいプラハの街並みや、モラヴィア民謡も含めた文化的な背景は、あなたの音楽に影響を与えていますか？
【LIBOR】: もちろん、クラシック音楽は作曲家として僕に影響を与えているよ。ベドリック・スメタナとアントニン・ドヴォルザークは我が国では大御所だけど、ただ、彼らの影響をそれほど過大評価することもないだろう。
また、モラヴィア地方の民族音楽も身近にあるんだけど、僕の作曲に大きな影響を与えているとは思えないな。
ちなみに、チェコには SILENT STREAM OF GODLESS ELEGY というバンドがいて、モラヴィア民謡とメタルを融合させようとしているんだけど、正直言って、あまり興味を持ったことはないね。
Q3: Symphonity has been characterized in recent years by a beautiful, dramatic, symphonic sound, but did you originally gravitate toward German power metal? What was the reason for the change in sound?
【LIBOR】: You are right. When I started playing and composing music, there was a big influence by the German metal scene. I listened to the bands like Helloween, Running Wild, Scorpions and many others when I was young. Reason for the change? It happened naturally as one aged, there was no plan at all. Also, with the Marco Polo theme, we felt that a more symphonic sound than on the first two albums is appropriate. I also have to mention that our record label Limb Music gives us absolute freedom about the compositions, so I can write songs how I really feel, and the last time I wrote a symphonic metal album
Q3: SYMPHONITY は、近年では美しくドラマティックなシンフォニック・パワーメタルとして知られていますが、以前はよりジャーマン・メタル的な音楽をやっていましたよね？
【LIBOR】: 君の言う通りだよ。僕が演奏や作曲を始めた頃は、ドイツのメタル・シーンから大きな影響を受けていたんだ。若い頃は、HELLOWEEN, RUNNING WILD, SCORPIONS など、ドイツのいろいろなバンドを聴いていたからね。
変化の理由は？年齢を重ねるごとに自然にそうなっただけで、計画性はまったくなかったんだ。あとは、マルコポーロというテーマから、最初の2枚のアルバムよりもっとシンフォニックなサウンドがふさわしいと思ったんだよね。それに、僕らのレコード会社 Limb Music は作曲に関して絶対的な自由を与えてくれるから、自分が本当に感じたままに曲を書くことができる。だから前作ではシンフォニック・メタル・アルバムを書いたんだ。
Q4: By the way, your new piece is fantastic! Why did you decide to use Marco Polo’s The Travels of Marco Polo as the theme this time?
【LIBOR】: Thank you for your kind words. I’ m very proud of this album and I’m glad you like it. My original idea was to write just one or two songs about Marco Polo’s adventures but when I started composing the first two parts, I had lots of ideas for the next parts and at the end, we have a full concept album. I like this soundtrack idea because there are many metal operas in these days but no one made a real power metal soundtrack until now.
Q4: それにしても、マルコ・ポーロの東方見聞録を、この素晴らしいアルバムのテーマに選んだのはなぜだったんですか？
【LIBOR】: ありがとう！このアルバムはとても誇りに思っているから、気に入ってもらえてうれしいね。最初のアイデアはマルコポーロの冒険について1、2曲書くだけだったんだけど、最初の2つのパートを作曲し始めたら、次のパートのアイデアがたくさん出てきて、最後には完全なコンセプト・アルバムになったんだ。
最近、メタル・オペラはたくさんあるけど、本物のパワー・メタルのサウンドトラックは今まで誰も作っていないから、このサウンドトラックのアイデアは気に入っているよ。
Q5: The Travels of Marco Polo was made into a movie, with a soundtrack by Ennio Morricone. Is there a sense of homage from heavy metal to Ennio’s achievement?
【LIBOR】: Sure, the album can be considered as a kind of tribute because I was indeed inspired by the 80‘s Italian TV series about Marco Polo with an amazing soundtrack composed by Ennio Morricone. But from the very beginning, I was determined not to use anything from the Morricone’s music but to compose my own original soundtrack. And I think it was a right decision.
Q5: 東方見聞録は、Ennio Morricone のサウンドトラックで映画にもなっていますね。ある意味、Ennio の偉業に対するトリビュート的な側面もあるのでしょうか？
【LIBOR】: 確かに、このアルバムは一種のトリビュートと言えるかもしれないね。なぜなら、僕は80年代のイタリアのテレビ・シリーズで、エンニオ・モリコーネが作曲した素晴らしいサウンドトラックのマルコ・ポーロにインスパイアされたからね。
でも、最初からモリコーネの音楽は一切使わず、自分のオリジナルのサウンドトラックを作ろうと決めていたんだ。そして、それは正しい判断だったと思っているよ。
Q6: Various traditional instruments and traditional music also appear on the album, such as Mongolian throat-singing and Matouqin? As you delved into the folk music of the countries Marco traveled to, were there any particular cultures or music that you particularly liked?
【LIBOR】: It’s hard to say. The whole story gave us a very unique chance to discover exotic instruments, harmonies and scales from the ancient countries which Marco with his father and uncle passed through. Any particular music has its own magic. Middle Eastern music, for example, has a large number of different scales. Some others regions have very interesting instruments like Tibetan horn made of the human leg bone or, as you mentioned, the very original Mongolian throat-singing. But, of course, I still had in mind that Marco Polo should be a strong power metal album at the first place.
Q6: アルバムには、ちょうどマルコの足跡を辿るように、様々な国の伝統音楽や楽器が登場しますね？ 特にあなたが気に入っているものはどれですか？
【LIBOR】: 難しいね。この物語は、マルコが父や叔父とともに通過した古代の国々。そのエキゾチックな楽器やハーモニー、音階を発見するとてもユニークな機会を与えてくれたんだ。どんな音楽にも、それぞれの魔法があるからね。
例えば、中東の音楽にはたくさんの音階がある。他にも様々な音楽が登場する。チベットのホルンは人間の足の骨でできているし、モンゴルの喉歌はとても独創的だよ。ただもちろん、”Marco Polo” はパワー・メタルとしての力強さを第一に考えていたんだけどね。
Q7: The Travels of Marco Polo is a milestone in introducing Eastern culture to the West and Western culture to the East. In recent years, heavy metal, which used to belong to the West, has been widely released to the world, and metal is played by various races from various countries, cultures, and religions. This album, with members from various countries and representing various cultures, embodies the globalization of metal, would you agree?
【LIBOR】: I’ll maybe disappoint you, but the reason for being an international band is quite simple. In Czechia, it is almost impossible to find a good power metal singer with good English. Sure, it is much easier to work with bandmates living close to you than care about buying flying tickets, planning rehearsals for months ahead, etc., but if you have such a lack of good musicians (I mean singers in the case of our country), you have to look around. On the other hand, we are already used to this style of work and with help of internet it is much easier than before.
Q7: 東方見聞録は当時、東洋と西洋の架け橋となりましたが、このアルバム自体、音楽やメンバーなど実に多国籍で、メタルのグローバリゼーションを体現していますよね？
【LIBOR】: もしかしたら君をがっかりさせるかもしれないけど、国際的なバンドである理由はとてもシンプルなんだ。チェコでは、英語の上手なパワーメタル・シンガーを見つけるのがほとんど不可能だから。
確かに、飛行機のチケットを買ったり、何ヶ月も先のリハーサルを計画したりするよりも、近くに住んでいるバンドメンバーと一緒に仕事をする方がずっと簡単なんだけど、これほど良いミュージシャン（僕たちの国の場合はシンガーのこと）がいない場合は、周りを見渡すしかないんだよ。
僕たちはこうした仕事のスタイルにすでに慣れているし、インターネットの力を借りれば、以前よりずっと簡単にできるようになったからね。
Q8: In The Travels of Marco Polo, Japan is referred to as the “Golden Land of Zipangu. All the buildings were made of gold. Of course, those of us who live in Japan know very well that Japan today is not a golden country. What kind of country is Japan from your point of view?
【LIBOR】: It’s rather a difficult question because I’ve never been to Japan (I hope it will change soon). Of course, I know some basic geographical or historical facts but I don’t have any wider awareness about Japanese society or culture (and yes, I also don’t understand that Manga stuff so popular in your country, haha.
Q8: 東方見聞録の中で日本は、”黄金の国ジパング” と記されていました。まあ、今日ここに住む人のほとんどが、黄金の国だとは思っていませんが。
日本盤のボーナストラック、”Zipangu” はうれしい驚きですよ！
【LIBOR】: 僕は日本に行ったことがないから、なんとも言えないね。近いうちにそうなることを願っているけど。もちろん、基本的な地理的、歴史的な事実は知っているけど、日本の社会や文化について広く知っているわけではないからね。
だから、君の国ではマンガがとても人気があることも理解していないんだ (笑)

First, I have to mention the Episode album from Stratovarius. I remember very well the moment when my former bandmate from Nemesis brought this record on a tape to a rehearsal. This album was like a bolt from the blue because I never heard about this band before. I listened to it for months again and again. Second, Helloween’s Keeper of the Seven Keys comes to my mind as a really important album. Also the third album of Czechoslovak band Tublatanka called Zerave znamenie osudu influenced me a lot in my early adolescence. I shouldn’t forget about Ennio Morricone and his soundtracks. If I had to pick one it will be The Mission. Finally, Gamma Ray with Land of the Free album was a light at the end of tunnel in those times when power metal was in seclusion.
まず、STRATOVARIUS の “Episode”について触れておかなければならない。SYMPHONITY の前身 NEMESIS の元バンドメイトがリハーサルにこのレコードをテープで持ってきた時のことをよく覚えている。それまでこのバンドを聞いたことがなかったので、このアルバムは青天の霹靂のようだったね。何ヶ月も何度も何度も聴き続けた。次に、HELLOWEEN の “Keeper of the Seven Keys” は、本当に重要なアルバムとして心に残っている。また、チェコスロバキアのバンド TUBLATANKA のサードアルバム “Zerave znamenie osudu” は、思春期の僕に大きな影響を与えてくれた。エンニオ・モリコーネと彼のサウンドトラックも忘れてはならないね。1つ選ぶとしたら、”The Mission” だね。最後に GAMMA RAY の “Land of the Free” は、パワーメタルが沈んでいた時代、トンネルの先に光を与えてくれたんだ。
