DISC REVIEW “ARABIC ROCK ORHESTRA”
「僕たちがパレスチナですることは、すべて政治的なことになっちゃうけどね。ビールを買うことでさえも政治的になるんだから (笑)。 そう、僕たちの音楽は、この地域の惨状にもかかわらず、人生を謳歌するためのもの。例えば、現状を憂いデモで叫びに行く女の子と、占領されているにもかかわらず踊って笑うことを選ぶ女の子に違いはないと思うからね。だからといって、どちらか一方が他方よりパレスチナを気にかけているということではなく、僕たちは皆、それぞれのやり方で抵抗しているということなんだ」
正邪混沌。私たちは今、正義と邪悪が混沌とした世界を生きています。もちろん、善と悪は、白と黒のようにスッキリとした二元論で割り切れるものではありません。多くの場合、両者の間には曖昧な “グレー・ゾーン” が存在し、その灰色の場所で人類は互いにうまくやる術を学んできました。
とはいえ、私たちは本能的に、もしくはそうして生きる中で、暴力や抑圧の愚かさを知り、ゆるやかに、なんとなくではありながら、寛容の尊さを理解してより良い世界に近づいているはずでした。しかし、気がつくと、世界は正義が邪悪、邪悪が正義の残酷で複雑怪奇な、見通しの悪い場所になっていたのです。パレスチナの砂地にメタルの種を撒いた KHALAS は、そんな歪んだ世界を音楽で変えれられると心から信じています。音楽で人生を謳歌することこそが、世界を黒雲で覆う二極化政治に対する抵抗。
「最近はプロパガンダ・マシンと偽メディアのせいで、ORPHANED LAND ともすべてにおいて意見が一致するわけではないけれど、それでも僕たちは友人で、互いの痛みや苦しみを尊重し、理解しているんだよ」
ロシアとウクライナ。イスラエルとハマス (パレスチナ)。もはやその戦いは、SNS とメディアの戦争です。誰もが正義を叫び、誰もが邪悪を叫び、誰でも自分の “側” に引き入れようと死力を尽くしています。その裏で傷つき、無惨に死んでいく無垢の魂には一瞥もくれずに。さて、私たちは何を信じ、誰の側に立ち、誰を救えばいいのでしょうか？
「僕がパレスチナの皆を代表して発言することはできないけど、民間人に対するテロ行為や大量虐殺は、誰が行おうとも非難されるべきものだ。それが組織的な軍隊であれ、過激派グループであれ、罪のない人々、特に子どもたちが政治的な欲や腐敗の代償を払うことは決してあってはならない」
そもそも私たちは、必ずどちらかの “側” に立たなければならないのでしょうか？いえ、もし誰かの “側” に立つとすれば、それは決して正邪混沌の元凶である権力者やテロリストたちではなく、平和を願う無垢なる人たちの “側” でしょう。あまりにも暴力的で極端な “暴君” たちの裏側には、顔の見えないその何万倍もの共存を望む優しい人たちがいます。イスラエル。パレスチナ。大きな主語で、そのすべてを一括りにすることこそ愚か。そもそもが灰色である正義を、邪悪を声高に叫ぶ人々、その声の大きさに取り込まれてはいけません。
事実、パレスチナが産んだオリエンタル・メタルの雄 KHALAS の音楽は、見事に中東と西欧が融合していますし、彼ら自身、イスラエルの ORPHANED LAND とのツアーを融和と共に完遂した経歴を持ちます。つまり、溜め込んだ憎しみも武器も捨て去り溶け合うことは、決して荒唐無稽で夢見がちなお伽話というわけではないのです。ただ願うのは、共存共栄と普通の人々の平和で普通の日常のみ。
今回弊誌では、KHALAS の Abed Hathout にインタビューを行うことができました。「この状況は今に始まったことではない。過去75年間の占領下で続いてきた、終わりのない血の連鎖の新たな章なんだよ。今起きていることはすべてこの75年の結果なんだけど、政府や選挙で選ばれた人たちは、すべての人に平等な人権を与え、占領を終わらせるための非暴力的な解決、その道を歩むことを拒んでいるんだ」 どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH ABED HATHOUT
Q1: First, please tell us about your current situation. Are you in a safe place?
【ABED】: Hey! thank you so much for checking in. Yes, everyone is safe. I moved to Los Angeles a few years ago, but the other band members are in Palestine (living within the borders of Israel)

Q1: まず、あなたの現在の状況を教えてください。安全な場所にいますか？
【ABED】: どうもありがとう！そうだね、今のところみんな無事だよ。僕は数年前にロサンゼルスに引っ越したけど、他のメンバーは今もパレスチナ (イスラエルとの国境内) にいるんだ。
Q2: Now that the war between Israel and Hamas has started, how do you see this chain of hatred?
【ABED】: The current situation didn’t start now. It’s another chapter in the endless blood cycle that has been ongoing for the last 75 years of occupation. Everything happening now is a result of that, but governments and elected officials refuse to take a path towards a non-violent resolution that gives equal human rights to all and ends the occupation.
Q2: イスラエルとハマスの間で戦争が始まってしまいました。この憎しみの連鎖をどう見ていますか？
【ABED】: この状況は今に始まったことではない。過去75年間の占領下で続いてきた、終わりのない血の連鎖の新たな章なんだよ。今起きていることはすべてこの75年の結果なんだけど、政府や選挙で選ばれた人たちは、すべての人に平等な人権を与え、占領を終わらせるための非暴力的な解決、その道を歩むことを拒んでいるんだ。
Q3: I think the Palestinian people are feeling fear right now. How do ordinary Palestinians feel about Hamas?
【ABED】: I can’t speak on behalf of everyone, but terrorist acts against civilians and genocide are condemned regardless of whoever is committing them. If it’s an organized army or a militant group, innocent people, especially children should never pay the price of political greed and corruption.
Q3: パレスチナの人々は今、底知れない恐怖を感じていると思います。一般のパレスチナ人はハマスのやり方についてどう感じているのでしょうか？
【ABED】: 僕が皆を代表して発言することはできないけど、民間人に対するテロ行為や大量虐殺は、誰が行おうとも非難されるべきものだ。それが組織的な軍隊であれ、過激派グループであれ、罪のない人々、特に子どもたちが政治的な欲や腐敗の代償を払うことは決してあってはならない。
Q4: The world knows that you have been working with ORPHANED LAND to continue your work for peace. Have you been in contact with them?
【ABED】: Yes of course, and even though we don’t see eye to eye on everything these days because of the propaganda machines and false media, we are still friends and respect and understand each other’s pain and suffering.
Q4: あなたたちがイスラエルの ORPHANED LAND と協力して、平和のための活動を続けていることは世界中に知られています。彼らとは今も連絡を取っていますか？
【ABED】: もちろんだよ。最近はプロパガンダ・マシンと偽メディアのせいで、すべてにおいて意見が一致するわけではないけれど、それでも僕たちは友人で、互いの痛みや苦しみを尊重し、理解しているんだよ。
Q5: What are the challenges of living in Palestine and continuing to play rock and metal? Conversely, what saves you from rock and metal?
【ABED】: The main challenge is that the Palestine music scene is very small, and the metal and rock scene over there is even smaller. When we started there was no metal scene, we had to build it ourselves. People didn’t even know how to react to our music, but over the years, a good scene was built and we had a few Palestinian metal bands, but in the past years things have been in decline, mainly because of the occupation and the lack of resources that it causes.
Q5: パレスチナに住みながらロックやメタルを演奏し続けることの難しさは何ですか？
【ABED】: 一番の課題は、パレスチナの音楽シーンがとても小さいことで、メタルやロックとなるとそのシーンはさらに小さい。僕たちが始めたころはメタル・シーンはなくて、自分たちで築き上げなければならなかった。人々は僕たちの音楽にどう反応していいのかさえわからなかったんだ。でも何年もかけて、いいシーンが築かれていった。パレスチナのメタル・バンドが何組か結成された。
Q6: Your rock mix of traditional Middle Eastern music is really great! What made you decide to combine the two?
【ABED】: After releasing the first album that was heavily influenced by grunge and metal, and after the success we had with it, we decided to get more connected to our roots and go back to the music we grew up listening to coming out of our parents’ radio, and share with the world this amazing melodies and grooves but in our own way and through distorted guitars and headbanging drums.
Q6: それにしても、伝統的な中東音楽をミックスしたあなたたちのロック/メタルは本当に素晴らしいですね！なぜロック/メタルと伝統音楽の2つを組み合わせようと思ったのですか？
【ABED】: グランジとメタルの影響を強く受けたファースト・アルバムをリリースし、それが成功した後、自分たちのルーツにもっと近づき、両親のラジオから流れてくる音楽を聴いて育ったころに戻ろうと決めたんだ。中東の素晴らしいメロディーとグルーヴを、歪んだギターとヘッドバンギングするドラムを通して、自分たちなりのやり方で世界に伝えようと決めたんだよ。
Q7: What is important is that your music conveys that you care more about having fun than about religion or politics. Is such a mindset always in your heart?
【ABED】: Even though everything we do in our region is political, even buying a beer, haha! our music is about celebrating life despite the horrors of our region, there is no difference between a girl that go to shout in a demonstration and a girl that choose to dance and laugh despite of the occupation, that doesn’t mean that one cares more than the other it just means we all resist in our own way.
Q7: 大切なのは、あなたたちの音楽が、宗教や政治よりも、人生を楽しむことの重要さを伝えていることです。そうした考え方は、常にあなたの心の中にあるのですか？
【ABED】: まあ、僕たちがパレスチナですることは、すべて政治的なことになっちゃうけどね。ビールを買うことでさえも政治的になるんだから (笑)。
そう、僕たちの音楽は、この地域の惨状にもかかわらず、人生を謳歌するためのもの。例えば、現状を憂いデモで叫びに行く女の子と、占領されているにもかかわらず踊って笑うことを選ぶ女の子に違いはないと思うからね。

Q8: It is difficult to change the world with music, but is there anything music can do to end strife and hatred?
【ABED】: Music is a universal language. I know it sounds like a cliché but it’s true, we have fans that doesn’t speak one word of arabic and yet they enjoy our music, we seen it in our shows too, people from different backgrounds and believes coming together to enjoy something that is bigger and higher than us all.
Music can change the world and we have a lot of examples through history where it happened, like Woodstock 1969 and its help to en the vietnam war to artists like Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekala and how their songs help spread awareness and end the Apartheid in South Africa.
Q8: 音楽で世界を変えることは難しいですが、争いや憎しみをなくすために音楽にできることはあるでしょうか？
【ABED】: 音楽は世界共通の言語だ。使い古された言葉だけど、それが真実だよ。アラビア語を一言も話せないのに、僕たちの音楽を楽しんでくれるファンがいるんだから。僕たちのショーでも、さまざまな背景や信条、宗教を持つ人たちが、そうした背景や、そこにいる全員よりも大きく崇高なものを楽しむために集まっているのを見たことがあるからね。
僕は、音楽は世界を変えることができると信じている。1969年のウッドストックがベトナム戦争終結へ果たした大きな貢献や、ミリアム・マケバやヒュー・マセカラのようなアーティストの歌が南アフリカのアパルトヘイトに対する認識を広め、終結させるのに役立ったというような、歴史上、奇跡が起こった例はたくさんあるからね。
