ISIS THE BAND の AARON TURNER, CONVERGE の NATE NEWTON, CAVED IN の CALEB SCOFIELD, そして多才な万能ドラマー SANTOS MANTANO が集結したスーパーバンド OLD MAN GLOOM。昨年発表した “THE APE OF GOD” は通常通り1枚のアルバムとアナウンスされていたにもかかわらず蓋を開けてみれば2枚のアルバムというサプライズと共にリリースされました。ほんのり茶色い “THE APE OF GOD 1” は比較的短めの8曲を集めていて”比較的”聴きやすいです。勿論そこは EXPERIMENTAL SLUDGE/DOOM バンドなので決して耳に優しいわけではなく、冷ややかな轟音とノイズのバッキングから憎しみを帯びた絶叫が繰り出される様はやはり圧巻です。非常に深く練られたミニマルなリフの反復はキャッチーと言えるほどに快感でモダニズム建築のよう。その無機質感と感情に溢れた地獄の咆哮の組み合わせは中毒性が非常に強いですね。一方 “THE APE OF GOD 2” は彼らの実験的な面を強調したアルバムです。10分を大幅に超えた曲が3曲。ノイズやアンビエント要素を大幅に取り入れ、ビーーーとかファーーーしかいってない時間もありますが「ロックってこんな風にも進化できるんだ・・・」と感心させられます。映画を観ているようだったり。ただ演奏の各所に引っかかりがあって何度も何度も確認したくなったり。これもまた現代の”プログレ”だと思いますよ。CONVERGE の KURT のプロデュースも実にハマっています。今回弊サイトでは SANTOS MANTANO 氏に話を聞く事が出来ました。
【INTERVIEW WITH SANTOS MANTANO 】
Q1: Hi, “The Ape of God” has just released. How are the reactions?
【SANTOS】: The reactions have been mixed. First, everyone hated us for the mean prank we played. Luckiy, everyone seemed to like the records, so they got over the fact that we tricked them. I think people seem to like the Ape of God with 4 songs the most. I have a hard time separating the two. I like them both.
Q1: “THE APE OF GOD” がリリースされました。反響はいかがですか？
【SANTOS】: 反響は様々だね。まずは僕らが仕掛けた悪ふざけにみんな怒ったよね。幸運な事にみんなこのレコードを気に入ってくれているようでそれって僕らが騙した事を乗り越えてくれたって事だよね。4曲入りの方を気に入っている人が多いみたいだね。僕は両方とも好きだから二つに分けるのには苦労したよ。
Q2: All medias, fans are surprised at the way of releasing “The Ape of God”. Everyone didn’t know that is double album. Why did you do that kind of “Surprise”?
【SANTOS】: We always play tricks on people. We have from the beginning. It’s really just what we thought would make things exciting. There’s no fun, and excitement in the way music is released these days. Everyone seems to have the album a month before it is released. We strive to make things fun, so we kept our little secret.
Q2: 先ほどお話にも出ましたが “THE APE OF GOD” がダブルアルバムでファンもメディアも驚きました。なぜこのようなサプライズを行ったのですか？
【SANTOS】: 僕たちはいつも悪戯を仕掛けるのが好きなんだ。最初からそうしようと考えていたよ。ただもっとエキサイティングな事がやりたかったんだ。近年の音楽リリースには楽しみもエキサイトメントもないんだから。みんながリリースより一月も前からアルバムを持っているように思えるよ。面白くしたかったからちょっとした秘密を作ったんだ。
Q3: We are lucky to have these masterpieces. I think “The Ape of God 2” is more experimental and atomospheric than “The Ape of God 1”. And each songs are very long. Is that the reason why you separate “The Ape of God”?
【SANTOS】: We structured the albums very deliberately, to make them albums that can stand alone. Obviously, we think they compliment each other very well, but if a person didn’t know two existed, i think they’d still be happy with the album.
Q3: “THE APE OF GOD 2” は “THE APE OF GOD 1” に比べて実験的ですね。どの曲もとても長いですし。これがアルバムを2つに分けた理由ですか？
【SANTOS】: 僕たちはアルバムをとても計画的に構築したよ。それぞれ一つでも十分機能するようにね。明らかにみんなは2枚の関係性をとてもよく出来ていると褒めるけど、もし2枚存在するって知らなければ1枚でも満足したはずだよ。
Q4: Anyway, Would you tell us about the title of album “The Ape of God” and Artwork? Does this album have kind of conceptual story?
【SANTOS】: It refers to the prankster within us all. We are very forthcoming in our trickery, but we believe that everyone has this tricky little devil in them. The art is always done last, so it’s definitely a reflection of the album, and concept.
Q4: “THE APE OF GOD” のアルバムタイトルやアートワークについて教えて下さい。何かコンセプトはありますか？
【SANTOS】:タイトルも僕たち全員に潜む悪ふざけに関係しているんだ。僕たちは今回の悪戯にとても乗り気だったけど誰にだってそういった小悪魔みたいなものが潜んでいるんじゃないかなあ。アートワークはいつも最後に製作されるから確実に音楽やコンセプトを反映しているね。
Q5: Is there any “favorite” or “important” songs in “The Ape of God” for you? And why?
【SANTOS】: I really love Simia Dei. I think it’s a great example of the band recorded something fairly simple, then Aaron takes it, and puts a whole crazy world behind it, and it becomes an Old Man Gloom song. He works very hard for the band, and these songs are never what they can be until he gets a hold of them. It’s also the title track, in latin, of course.
Q5: あなたにとって “THE APE OF GOD” の重要な曲、好きな曲を教えて下さい。
【SANTOS】: 僕は本当に “SIMIA DEI” が好きなんだ。この曲は OLD MAN GLOOM の製作過程を実によく現しているね。バンドが録音したものはいたってシンプルだったんだけど AARON がクレイジーな世界観を加えて OMG の曲になった。AARON はバンドのためにとても働いているよ。彼が手を加えるまで曲の完成形はどうなるか判らないんだ。 同時にもちろんラテン語の曲名もね。
Q6: We regard Old Man Gloom as super band. Because, there are members of Isis, Converge, Cave in. And before 2004 and after “NO” seems different for me. You looks tight as the band now. What do you think about that?
【SANTOS】: It was just the right time to become more active. We’ve all grown as people and musicians in the time we took off. I think it’s been very important to have all that time away from each other. In a way, I don’t think we’d exist now if we’d have kept going right after Christmas. The distance kept it all very fresh and exciting for us.
Q6: OLD MAN GLOOM は ISIS, CONVERGE, CAVED IN のメンバーを抱えていて当初はプロジェクト的な色合いが濃かったと思いますが “NO” を境にバンドとしてタイトになったと感じます。
【SANTOS】: よりアクティブになるにはちょうど良い時期だったんだ。全員が人として、ミュージシャンとしてより成長していたからね。重要なのは僕たちがその間ずっとお互いに離れていたって事なんだ。”CHRISTMAS” の後も続けていたらバンドは今存在しなかっただろうね。距離があるからフレッシュでエキサイティングな状態を保てるんだよ。
Q7: Kurt Ballou of Converge produced again. Why do you keep using him?
【SANTOS】: At this point, I don’t think anyone else could record us. Kurt just understands it, and doesn’t question our weird business. He also is so comfortable with us, he knows when to add, when to sit back, when to take over, etc. He’s also very conveniently located. It’s just become part of the ritual, really.
Q7: CONVERGE の KURT BALLOU が今回もプロデュースを行っていますね。
【SANTOS】: その点については他の誰かがこの仕事をこなせるとは思えないね。KURT は完全に理解しているから僕たちの奇妙なやり方にも異を唱えたりしないんだ。彼とならとても快適にやれるし加えたり傍観したり意見を言うタイミングを判っているんだ。便利なところに住んでもいるしね。もはや儀式のようなものだよ。
Q8: “Thinking Man’s Metal” is famous word of Aaron. I love this word so much. Anyway, do you think “The Ape of God” is “Thinking Man’s Metal”?
【SANTOS】: Absolutely. I do think that it can be as intellectual as you choose it to be, though. If you want it to be silly, it can be pretty silly. If you want to delve into it further, the lyrical content isn’t so silly. I’d say it’s actually pretty moody. Musically, especially since NO, and the noise elements have become more integrated, it’s not particularly listener friendly. So to me, that indicates a challenge for certain people. I think if art is challenging, it tends to be more for the thinking person.
Q8: “THINKING MAN’S METAL” は AARON の有名な言葉ですが “THE APE OF GOD” は “THINKING MAN’S METAL” だと思いますか？
【SANTOS】: 完璧にね。このアルバムは君が選べる中でも最高にインテレクチュアルだと思うよ。このアルバムを思慮のないものにしようとすればいくらでも思慮のないものになる。ただ深くまで詮索すれば歌詞の内容は決してくだらないものではないと気づくだろうね。とてもムーディーなものだよ。音楽的には、”NO” 以降ノイズ要素が強調されてきたね。部分的にはリスナーフレンドリーとは言えないだろう。僕にとってはある種の人たちへの挑戦だよ。もし芸術が挑戦的なものだとしたらより”考える人”向けになりがちだと思うんだ。

Q9: To Aaron, I’m big fan of Isis. Do you have a plan of Isis the band come back?
【SANTOS】: I think they’d play for a minimum of $1,000,000.
Q9: アーロンに質問ですが ISIS THE BAND のカムバックのプランはありますか？
【SANTOS】: 最低でも一億円積まれないと無理だろうね。

We like Japan. We ate at a noodle bar in Shibuya that played Nora Jones – “Don’t Know Why” over and over and over and over again. It was weird. But awesome. We ate there everyday. It was delicious.
