北アフリカ、チュニジアの空気を世界に伝えるオリエンタルメタルバンド MYRATH が、5年という長いインターバルの後に傑作 “Legacy” をリリースしました！！
アフリカ大陸という、現時点でシーンの注目が最も薄い地域から現れた MYRATH のサウンドは非常にエピカルで印象的なプログ / パワーメタル。例えば、SYMPHONY X がクラッシックを、DREAM THEATER がプログロックやフュージョンを屋台骨としているように MYRATH はチュニジアのトラディショナルなフォーク音楽をそのインスピレーションの源にしているのです。
バンド名 MYRATH を英訳した “Legacy” をタイトルに冠したアルバムは、以前の作品よりもメッセージ性が強く、キャッチーで、リスナーの魂に訴えかけるような1枚に仕上がりました。オリエンタルメタルの旗手 ORPHANED LAND にも言えることですが、所謂形骸化したプログレッシブという枠から脱却し、その先を見据えた作品のようにも思えますね。
チュニジアで起こったジャスミン革命にインスピレーションを得た、アルバムオープナー “Jasmin” と壮大なPVを伴う “Believer” の流れは、まさにその新しい彼らの魅力を凝縮したものだと言えるでしょう。弾圧に屈せず信念を貫く。楽曲は実際に動乱を経験した彼らだからこその説得力に満ちていますね。
音楽的には、非常に扇情的でドラマティック。雄々しく突き進むミッドテンポの曲調の中、ストリングスやキーボードの美しい音色が異国の色を添え MYRATH の個性を主張します。チュニジア由来のオリエンタルなメロディーを力強くエモーショナルに歌い上げる Zaher Zorgatti の歌唱は、”Believer” は勿論、アルバムを通して実に見事で傑出しています。特に美しすぎるバラード “I Want To Die” での名演は彼の評判を一層高めることでしょう。
また、Jens Bogren をミックスに、ADAGIO の Kevin Codfelt をプロデューサーに迎え、磨き上げられたモダンなプロダクションはさながらアラビアの芸術建築のようですね。
楽器隊の個性もアルバムの大きな魅力の1つとなっています。アルバムのオーケストレーションまで担当したキーボーディスト Elyes の豊かな才能は “Endure the Silence” のカサブランカピアノにも現れていますね。新加入 Morgan Berthet のドラミングはエネルギッシュかつタイト。バンドのダイナモとして十二分に機能することを証明しています。勿論、ギタリスト Malek Ben Arbia の Yngwie を想起させる煙が出るようなシュレッドも健在！今年のプログメタル必聴盤であることは間違いないでしょう。
今回弊誌では、キーボーディストの Elyes Bouchoucha にインタビューを行うことが出来ました。実はフランス、ソルボンヌ大卒の英才でもあります。どうぞ！

【INTERVIEW WITH ELYES BOUCHOUCHA】

Q1: This is the first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about the band? How did MYRATH come to be? And what’s the meaning behind your band name “MYRATH”?

【EYLES】: Myrath started in early 2000’s as a cover band, playing several shows in our home country Tunisia. We began recording our first album “Hope” in 2006 with the valued support of our soon-to-be producer Kevin Codfert of Adagio, after sharing the stage of Carthage, Tunisia with Adagio, and Robert Plant.
Our following albums were released in 2010 and 2011, “Desert Call” and “Tale of the Sands” had a unique style containing a mix of Tunisian folk music and Metal, in addition to Tunisian dialect lyrical verses, which shaped Myrath’s identity as Tunisian Metal. The albums received great reviews, our fan base and momentum grew bigger internationally; playing in many festivals from USA to India, and touring with major artists (Dream Theatre, HIM, WASP, Orphaned Land, Tarja…)
Myrath as a name, which is Arabic for legacy, symbolizes our aim and mission to immortalize our legacy and heritage, and share it with the world through music.

Q1: 本誌初登場です！まずはバンドについて聞かせてください。MYRATH 結成の経緯と、バンド名の由来を教えていただけますか？

【EYLES】: MYRATH は2000年の初めにカバーバンドとして始まったんだ。何度か母国チュニジアでショーを行ったよ。
2006年にはデビュー作 “Hope” のレコーディングを始めたんだけど、それには後にアルバムのプロデューサーとなる ADAGIO の Kevin Codfelt が大きく力を貸してくれたね。カルタゴで Robert Plant, ADAGIO とライブを行った後だったんだ。
2010年と2011年にリリースされた “Desert Call”, “Tales of the Sands” はチュニジアのフォークミュージックとメタルを融合したユニークなスタイルを持っていたね。加えて歌詞はチュニジアの訛りで歌われていて、それが MYRATH の “チュニジアンメタル” としてのアイデンティティーを形作っているんだ。それらの作品はレビューでも高評価を得て、僕たちのファンベースや勢いは国際的で大きなものとなったね。アメリカからインドまで多くのフェスでプレイしたし、メジャーなアーティストたちともツアーを行ったよ(DREAM THEATER, HIM, WASP, ORPHANED LAND, TARJAなど)。
MYRATH とはアラビア語で Legacy という意味なんだ。僕たちの目的やミッションを象徴した言葉で、音楽が遺産として不朽のものとなり、世界中にシェアされて欲しいという想いが込められているよ。

Q2: Your newest album “Legacy” is just out now! How are you feeling now?

【EYLES】: Legacy was released last February, after 5 long years since the release of our last album “Tales of the Sands” so we were very thrilled, the feedback we are getting has been incredibly positive and we are very happy to have met our fans expectations with the album.

Q2: 待望の新作 “Legacy” がリリースされましたね！今のお気持ちはいかがですか？

【EYLES】: うん、2月にリリースされたね。前作 “Tales of the Sands” から5年という長い月日を要したよ。だからとても興奮しているんだ。
今までに得た反響も信じられないくらいポジティブなものだし、この作品でファンの期待に応えられてとても嬉しいよ。

Q3: “Legacy” is amusing title, considering that’s what MYRATH literary translate to. When you named this great album as “Legacy”, what was in your mind? Could you tell us about the concept or lyrical themes of “Legacy”?

【EYLES】: Legacy is the result of our collective experiences in the past 5 years, we have moved beyond our previous releases into a more personal, diversified album which captures the spirit of Myrath, Legacy represents what we went through during those years in various themes, the revolution in Tunisia, the loss of dear ones, emotional upheaval, personal growth, and many more. So we felt it only made sense for it to be a self-titled album. As for the lyrics, there is no uniting lyrical theme as they cover a variety of subjects and moods, and each song has its own tailored theme, they range from personal, emotional, to myth and fantasy themes.

Q3: “Legacy” というタイトルは面白いですよね。先程お話にも出ましたが、バンド名を英語に訳したものな訳ですから。

【EYLES】: “Legacy” はバンドとしての過去5年間の成果なんだよ。僕たちは前作から、よりパーソナルで多様化したアルバムにシフトして来たんだ。それこそが MYRATH のスピリットを捉えているんだけどね。
“Legacy” ではその期間に経験した様々なテーマを表現しているんだよ。チュニジアの革命、愛する人たちを失う経験、感情の激変、個人的な成長などいろいろだよ。だからセルフタイトルだけがこの作品にピッタリだと感じたんだ。
故に、歌詞に関しても特別コンセプトというものはなくて、幅広い題材やムードを扱っているよ。それぞれの楽曲に仕立てられたテーマがあるのさ。個人的な話や感情、神話にファンタジーまでね。

Q4: “Tales of the Sands” was released in 2011. So, five years have passed. What is the reason of this long interval? “Jasmin” “Believer” is the song about “Jasmin Revolution”. Was that influenced your production process?

【EYLES】: Circumstances were not very favourable for us to work efficiently on a new album during the past 5 years; we sadly lost our manager Malek’s father, Tunisia was in political turmoil, in some nights we had to break a curfew to make it to the studio, and many other aspects delayed the production process of the album.

Q4: 具体的には、なぜ5年もの長い期間を要したのでしょう？お話にも出ましたが、”Jasmin” “Believer” はジャスミン革命についての楽曲です。その動乱の影響もあったのでしょうか？

【EYLES】: ここ5年間は、環境が新作を効果的に制作するのに好ましい状態ではなかったんだよ。悲しいことに、僕たちはマネージャー Malek の父を失ったよ。
チュニジアは政治的動乱の最中にあり、スタジオに入るために何度かは夜間外出禁止令を破らなければならなかったんだ。他にも色々とあって、アルバム制作のプロセスが遅れてしまったのさ。

Q5: So, how have you evolved on “Legacy”? I think “Legacy” has more melodic affair. The sound of Violin is very effective, and your folk influences are emphasized much more. Do you agree that?

【EYLES】: I agree, our Tunisian, and North African, folk influences are highlighted in Legacy, hence the name, and I believe during that long interval of time between albums, we had the chance to reflect on our musical identity and what we wanted to create, which resulted in a more balanced album, where every instrument has its unique key role to play but without overshadowing the rest.

Q5: では音楽の話をしましょう。前作からどういった部分が進化しましたか？ “Legacy” はよりメロディックで、ヴァイオリンの使用も効果的。フォーキッシュな側面が強調されているように感じましたが？

【EYLES】: うん、同意するよ。”Legacy” では僕たちのチュニジア、北アフリカフォークの影響がハイライトだよね。アルバム間のこの長いインターバルがあったからこそ、僕たちは自らのアイデンティティーを反映する機会が得られたと信じているんだよ。
そして僕たちの作りたかったものは、結果としてよりバランスの取れたアルバムとなったね。どの楽器も、他の良さを損なうことなく、ユニークで重要な役割を果たしているね。

Q6: The Video Clip of “Believer” was supported by indiegogo campaign. This song and worldview of video is really amazing!! Could you tell us about the story of “Believer”?

【EYLES】: We wanted to create a visually stimulating video that would capture the exotic spirit of Legacy, and we had the idea of launching an Indiegogo campaign to help make that possible, the response was very surprising as the amount of funds exceeded our target, and we were humbled by the amazing support of our fans all over the world. Believer is about trusting one’s own abilities to achieve anything. Injustice, tyranny, and setbacks can be overcome through confidence and perseverance and that is what Believer is all about, and we are happy the video is effective in delivering these messages thru.

Q6: “Believer” のMV は Indiegogo キャンペーンのサポートで制作されました。世界観が実に素晴らしいですね！

【EYLES】: 僕たちは “Legacy” のエキゾチックな雰囲気を捉えた映像作品を制作したかったんだ。それを可能にしてくれるのが Indiegogo キャンペーンだったんだよ。反響は驚くほどで、ターゲットよりも多くのファンドが集まったね。世界中のファンからのサポートに感謝しているよ。
“Believer” は自身の何かを成し得る才能を信じることについての楽曲なんだ。不公平、圧力、停滞といった困難は、自信と忍耐で乗り越えられるんだよ。そしてそれこそが “Believer” で伝えたかったことなんだ。このビデオによって効果的にそのメッセージを伝えることが出来て嬉しいよ。

Q7: When we focus on your oriental/folk side, you are often compared with ORPHANED LAND. I think your music are more straightforward and accessible. What is your thought?

【EYLES】: We became good friends with the guys of Orphaned Land after touring with them in 2011, although I do agree that we are not very similar, and we rely on North African, and Tunisian scales in our music, while Orphaned Land lean into Oriental ones.

Q7: オリエンタル/フォークと言えば、MYRATH は ORPHANED LAND とよく比較されると思うのですが、あなた達の方がよりストレートでキャッチーなスタイルだと思います。

【EYLES】: ORPHANED LAND とは2011年に共にツアーを行った後仲良くなったね。うん、そう思うよ。僕たちはそんなに似ていないね。MYRATH が北アフリカやチュニジアのスケールを使用しているのに対して ORPHANED LAND はよりオリエンタルだよね。

Q8: What is “born-of-the-desert” persona to you? Was it hard to keep playing Heavy Metal music in Tunisia? What do you want to express to the world through your music?

【EYLES】: I think Myrath wouldn’t have been what it is if it wasn’t for our Tunisian heritage, our music is highly influenced by our native tunes and melodies, alongside other things, and this is one part of what we wish to deliver to the world, we aim to give people a sense of our region while expressing the uniting factor that exists in Metal music. There is a solid metal scene in Tunisia, with its own challenges, it’s a little bit underground at the moment, but developing. There are several Metal bands, like Carthagods, Persona, Nawather, to name a few, and we are all supported by our fans and community, although there is no governmental support for the music and there is definitely a big room for expansion. As for us, we were the first Tunisian metal band to be signed on a label and gain momentum internationally.

Q8: 砂漠の国、チュニジアでメタルをプレイするとは、あなたにとってどういうことでしょう？

【EYLES】: MYRATH はチュニジアの血がなければ今の形にはなっていなかっただろうね。僕たちの音楽は、祖国の楽曲やメロディーにとても影響を受けているんだよ。そしてそれは僕たちが世界に届けたいものの1つでもあるね。メタルと融合させることで、僕たちの地域の雰囲気をみんなに伝えたいんだよ。
チュニジアにはソリッドなメタルシーンが存在するね。今のところ少しアンダーグラウンドだけど、どんどん良くなっているんだ。CARTHAGODS, PERSONA, NAWATHER など様々なバンドが存在し、ファンとコミュニティに支えられているんだ。政府からの音楽に対するサポートは全くないんだけどね。間違いなく拡大の余地はあるよ。
僕たちに関して言えば、最初にレーベルと契約を果たし、国際的に知られたチュニジアのバンドなんだ。
