メタルが多様化の道を歩む現代において、純度100%の Power Metal を送り続けるスウェーデンの5人組 SABATON が新作 “The Last Stand” をリリースしました！！
昨年の Loud Park において、初来日ながら圧倒的なパフォーマンスを披露し、日本のファンに強烈な印象を残した彼ら。弊誌でもライブ直後にインタビューを行い、大きな反響をいただいたことは記憶に新しいですね。あれから約1年。サバタリオンの元に届けられた新作は、この地で新しく得たファンをさらに魅了することでしょう。
“The Last Stand” は歴史上の偉大なラストスタンド、最後の戦いにフォーカスしたアルバムです。偉大なミュージシャンであると同時に、優れたストーリーテラーでもある SABATON。エピカルな歌詞を伴った大仰なボーカルと、クリアーでキレの良い演奏によって、リスナーはスコットランド革命から第二次世界大戦まで、鮮明な戦いのイメージを脳裏に浮かべることでしょう。
壮大な “The Last Stand” を象徴するような楽曲、”Sparta” で戦いの火蓋は切って落とされます。古代ギリシャのスパルタを題材としたオープナーは、シンフォニックなキーボードでドラマティックに幕を開け、鳴り響く地響きのような雄叫びは、まるで何万人もの兵士が間近に存在するかのよう。メロディアスでキレの良いリードプレイも白眉で、典型的でアグレッシブな SABATON のスタイルを提示しています。
日本のファンにスペシャルなプレゼントもあります。 “Shiroyama” はなんと西南戦争、西郷隆盛最後の戦いについて書かれた楽曲なのです。”Bushido Dignify. It’s the Last Stand of the Samurai”、武士道は尊く、これこそが侍のラストスタンドだ！と高らかに歌われるキラーチューンは、彼らの日本に対する敬意、愛情と共に私たちに目頭の熱くなるような感動をもたらしてくれますね。
Joakim の巻き舌ボーカル、常にツッコミ気味でシャープなドラムスと共に、SABATON が他の Power Metal アクトを置き去りにしている理由。それはメロディーの充実度、キャッチーさです。その側面にフォーカスしたのが “The Last Battle” でしょう。80年代のヘアメタルや JOURNEY さえ想起させる軽快なオープニング、ふんだんに使用される POP なキーボードサウンド、タッピングにスイープを織り交ぜた派手なシュレッド、全てが印象的で耳に残ります。
同時に、”Blood of Bamnockburn” のバグパイプを使用したエピカルな演出は美しくも見事ですし、”The Lost Battalion” は BLIND GUARDIAN へのリスペクトをオペラティックに表現し、結果として、アルバムはアグレッション、キャッチー、エピックのバランスが素晴らしい作品に仕上がっていますね。
今回弊誌では Par に再度ご登場願い、新作について語っていただきました。なお、SABATON Open Air を最後にギタリストの Thobbe Englund がバンドを去り、新たに RainXeed の Tommy Johansson が加入しています。どうぞ！!

【INTERVIEW WITH PAR SUNDSTROM】
Q1: Hi, Par! The number of Japanese Sabattalion definitely increases after the Loud Park!! In fact, Sabaton is one of the most popular metal band in Japan now. Can you believe that?
【PAR】: I am aware that we have lots of fans in Japan. We had over the years a growing fanbase but we felt that it was not the right time to go there until we had a working setup with recordlabel and distribution. Now the time was right and we came over for Loud Park and we can see that as the breaking point for Sabaton in Japan.
Q1: Loud Park 以降、日本の”サバタリオン”は増殖する一方です！実際、SABATON は今、日本で最も人気のあるメタルバンドの1つですよ。
【PAR】: うん、日本に沢山ファンがいることには気づいているよ。僕達は何年もかけてファンベースを育ててきたね。だけど、レコードレーベルとディストリビューションが整うまでは、まだ行くべき時ではないと感じていたんだ。
遂に気は熟し、Loud Park に出演したんだけど、あれこそが日本における SABATON のブレーキングポイントだったと思えるね。
Q2: So, your newest album “The Last Stand” is just out now !! From ancient Greece, Scottish Revolution to World War Ⅱ, there are songs about the war from all over the world. What made you choose this kind of concept or themes for the record?
【PAR】: When we decided to do The Last Stand there were a few stories that came up direct into our minds. The initial ones was the last stand of the Samurai and the other one was the story of the Spartans. By then we already had set the standard to be far away from World War 2.
Q2: 最新作、”The Last Stand” もリリースされました！古代ギリシャから世界大戦まで、世界中の戦争を題材とした楽曲を集めたアルバムですね？なぜこのテーマを選んだのでしょう？
【PAR】: 今回の “The Last Stand” に取り掛かった時、心に直接訴えかけて来たストーリーがいくつかあったんだ。
最初に浮かんだのが、侍の”最後の戦い”と、スパルタのストーリーだったんだよ。それまでに、WW2 までの戦争を扱うという基準を決めていたからね。
Q3: We, Japanese fans, are very proud of “Shiroyama”. When did you know about the Seinan War? Are you studying the history of war on a daily basis?
【PAR】: We are not nearly experts at history. We barely scratch the surface of things. Probably we are better at war history than the regular person but still far from experts. After all we are doing metal first hand and the lyrics at second hand.
Q3: 私たち日本のサバタリオンは、”Shiroyama” をとても誇りに思っていますよ。西南戦争について知っているとは驚きです。歴史を学ぶこともバンド活動の一環なのでしょうか？
【PAR】: 僕達は歴史のエキスパートという訳ではないんだ。まだまだ出来事の表面をなぞっているだけにすぎないんだよ。
おそらく、普通の人よりは戦争の歴史に詳しいだろうけど、エキスパートと呼ぶには程遠いね。結局、僕達にとってはまずメタルありきで、歌詞は二の次なんだよ。
Q4: Takamori Saigo fought till the end for his belief. Seinan War was exactly “The Last Stand” for him. I believe Sabaton never surrender for Metal, and fans. Did you feel sympathy with him?
【PAR】: Well, we have had some desperate times in Sabaton where it felt like we were doing a stand. But we always came out victorious from all these and even stronger than before. Personally I am the kind of person who think freedom is everything and I might even be a bit paranoid towards the governments and such and I guess I would rather do my last stand and fall than serve a lifetime as a slave.
Q4: 西郷隆盛は信念のために最後の戦いを行いました。SABATON もメタルやファンのために決して屈することはないでしょう。共感を覚える部分もあるのではないですか？
【PAR】: 僕達は、そのキャリアにおいて、絶望的な状況に陥ったことが何度かあるんだ。まさに1人で戦っているようなね。だけど、そこからいつも必ず勝利を掴み以前よりさらに強力になって戻って来ているんだよ。
個人的に、僕は自由が全てだと考える人間なんだよ。政府やそういった権力に対しては、非常に疑い深いと言えるかも知れないね。ただ、奴隷として一生を終えるくらいなら、最後の戦いで幕を引く方がいいね。
Q5: How was the writing process? How have you evolved from your previous release “Heroes”?
【PAR】: The writing of the songs were kinda the way they are always. Some songs come at times during the tours and the majority are written very close to recording session. All bandmembers contributed towards the album and helped making it maybe the strongest Sabaton album so far.
Q5: ライティングプロセスはいかがでしたか？前作 “Heroes” からどのような進化を遂げましたか？
【PAR】: ライティングプロセスはいつも通りだったよ。いくつかの楽曲は、ツアー中に浮かんで来たけど、大半はレコーディングセッション間近に書かれた楽曲なんだ。バンドメンバー全員がアルバムに寄与しているし、おそらく最も強力な SABATON のアルバムを作るために力を尽くしたよ。
Q6: Thobbe is going to be leaving after Sabaton Open Air. What’s the reason of that?
【PAR】: The reason behind that Thobbe explained very well in his letter. He has a wish to evolve his own music aswell as playing songs he write. I wish him all the best of luck with this!
Q6: Thobbe が SABATON Open Air を最後にバンドを離れましたね？
【PAR】: 彼も語っているんだけど、Thobbe は自分自身の音楽を進化させ、自分が書いた楽曲をプレイしたかったんだ。彼の幸運を願っているよ！
Q7: Sabaton Open Air is always amazing line up. How did you choose them? And we really want you to do Sabaton Open Air in Japan, haha. Is it possible someday?
【PAR】: The festival celebrates 10 years next summer. It has been lots of fantastic bands who played there over the years. ALmost every single band was choosen by us personally of either the reason that we like them private or that we love their music! The whole idea is that we have it in our hometown Falun so at the moment there is no idea to move this to Japan.
Q7: SABATON Open Air は常に素晴らしいラインナップで開催されていますが、どのように出演バンドを決めているのですか？いつか日本で開催されることはあるのでしょうか？
【PAR】: このフェスティバルは、来年の夏で10周年を迎えるんだ。沢山の素晴らしいバンドたちが、何年もの間に出演して来たね。ほとんどどのバンドも僕達が個人的に選んで来たんだよ。プライベートで仲が良かったり、その音楽を気に入っていたりしてね！このフェスのアイデアは、僕達のホームタウン Falun で行うという点にあるから、今の時点では日本で行う計画はないんだ。
Q8: Twilight Force is one of the brightest hope of Power Metal. We all know Sabaton have dig and supported them. Is it important for you to contribute the Metal Scene? And do you have another Twilight Force?
【PAR】: We love the band. We supported them in all ways we could. Not just singing on their albums but we also helped them with things behind the scenes. The band is great, we decided to bring them as support for our entire european tour.
Q8: TWILIGHT FORCE は Power Metal 期待の新人ですが、SABATON が発掘し、サポートして来たことでも知られています。
【PAR】: あのバンドが大好きなんだよ。出来る限り彼らをサポートして来たんだ。彼らのアルバムにゲスト参加するだけじゃなく、舞台裏でも助けて来たんだよ。偉大なバンドだから、ヨーロッパツアーのサポートに起用することも決めたんだ。
