オランダが誇る Symphonic / Prog Metal の雄、EPICA が9/30に待望の新作 “The Holographic Principle” をリリースします！！
マルチリンガルという高い知性、美しすぎるその容姿、そして幻想的なメゾソプラノ。3拍子揃った紅一点 Simone Simons と、ex-AFTER FOREVER の Mark Jansen を中心として結成されたバンドは、初期の Gothic Metal 路線から徐々にメタリック、シンフォニック度合いを増し、荘厳かつ壮大な独自の Symphonic Metal を具現化しています。地元オランダのみならず、ブラジルでまで自らが主催する Epic Metal Fest を行うほどですから、その人気は最早世界レベルと言えるでしょう。NIGHTWISH, WITHIN TEMPTATION, そして EPICA をシンフォメタルの三本柱と信じるファンも多いはずです。
恐ろしいほどの高い完成度、ストーリー性を誇り、EPICA の集大成とまで評された前作 “The Quantum Enigma” の時点で、過去最高のヘヴィネス、アグレッションを備えていた訳ですが、最新作 “The Holographic Principle” はさらにエクストリームでヘヴィーなレコードです。
前作と同じ Joost Van Den Broek & Jacob Hansen というレコーディングチームを起用して制作されたアルバムは、Issac が「実際、僕達はまずメタルバンドなんだ。」と語る通り、ブルータルで推進力溢れるリフワークがアルバムの根幹に存在します。”Edge Of The Blade”, “Universal Death Squad” は、多くの Symphonic Metal バンドが”キャッチーさ”と引き換えに失いつつある、インテンスや大胆さ、展開美をこれでもかと見せつける強力な楽曲ですね。
とは言え、勿論、荘厳でシンフォニックな要素こそ EPICA のアイデンティティー。インタビューで Mark が語ってくれた通り、今作では何と、全てのオーケストラ楽器がライブでレコーディングされているのです。幻想的で揺らめくような “Once Upon A Nightmare” や、11分にも及ぶ「EPICA を EPICA たらしめる全ての要素を詰め込んだ」という大曲 “The Holographic Principle” を聴けば、豪華で独創的な真のオーケストレーションと共に、彼らの新しいチャレンジがさらに EPICA を一段上のバンドに進化させていることに気づくでしょう。
バーチャルリアリティを題材とした “The Holographic Principle” は、高い知性と豊かなエモーションを乗せた、科学と音楽の新たな旅だと言えますね。
今回弊誌では、Mark Jansen にインタビューを行うことが出来ました。日本のファンにとっては最後のまだ見ぬ巨人とも言える EPICA。遂に来日を約束するような言葉もいただきました。オランダの貴公子の登場です。どうぞ！！
【INTERVIEW WITH MARK JANSEN】
Q1: The final line-up of Epic Metal Fest is just announced! We did interview with Myrath and Textures before, It’s really amazing line-up. How did choose the bands? What’s hosting this festival in Netherland to you?
【MARK】: It’s great to have our own festival, it’s a long time dream that we fulfilled. The first edition was a big succes so this is the second step and we also organise two weeks after an edition in Brazil. We choose the bands from our personal preferences list, it’s always a matter of who is on tour, who can we get and not too many bands in the same genre to keep it interesting for the visitors of our festival.
Q1: 第2回 Epic Metal Fest の最終ラインナップがアナウンスされましたね！素晴らしいバンドが揃いました。
【MARK】: 僕達自身でフェスティバルを開催出来ることは素晴らしいね。長年の夢が叶ったんだ。第1回は大きな成功を収めたから、今回は次のステップだね。その二週間後には、ブラジルでも Epic Metal Fest を開催するんだよ。
出演バンドは、僕達の個人的な好みで決めたんだ。誰をツアーに呼ぶかはいつも悩むんだよね。あまり同じジャンルのバンドを増やしすぎると、フェスティバルの観客の興味が薄れてしまうしね。
Q2: Epica is the final giant which haven’t come to Japan yet. Do you think your Japan Tour will come true soon? What’s your impression about Japan?
【MARK】: After the release of the new album we should finally be able to come over to Japan. It almost happened already but we weren’t lucky so far. I hear great stories about Japan and the people so I can’t wait.
Q2: EPICA は日本のメタルファンにとって、まだ見ぬ最後の巨人です。近々、日本ツアーは実現しそうですか？
【MARK】: 新作をリリースした後、遂に僕達は日本に行くことが出来るだろうね。これまでも、ほとんど実現しそうだったんだけど、ツイてなかった部分もあってね。日本や日本の人たちについては、素晴らしい話を聞いているから、待ちきれないよ。
Q3: So, your newest album “The Holographic Principle” will be out on 9/30 !! It seems to be the story about near future and virtual world. I remind even “Matrix” movies. Epica always choose interesting, ambitious concept. What made you choose the concept this time?
【MARK】: Virtual reality is developing at a fast rate. Soon our virtual reality masks will be so good that you won’t be able to see a difference between the virtual reality world and our “real” world anymore. That might be the moment that we realise that the universe as we know it is a virtual reality on its own. The theory behind this is called “the Holographic Principle”, it’s not just a wicked far fetched idea by one scientist. It’s a theory that many scientists take very serious. The universe as we know it might be an hologram. It’s an interesting thought and we decided to write our lyrics about it.
Q3: 9/30には最新作、”The Holographic Principle” のリリースも控えています！
EPICA はアルバム毎に、野心的なコンセプトを打ち出します。今回は、近未来、バーチャルワールドに関するストーリーだそうですね？
【MARK】: バーチャルリアリティ、仮想現実は早い速度で革新を続けているよ。近い将来、バーチャルリアリティマスクが実用化され、バーチャルワールドと僕達の現実世界の区別がつかなくなるだろうね。それは、僕達が知っている世界、それ自体もバーチャルリアリティであると悟る瞬間でもあるんだよ。
この理論は “The Holographic Principle” と呼ばれているんだ。これは1人の科学者によるこじつけの無理なアイデアという訳ではないんだよ。多くの科学者が真剣に取り組んでいる理論なんだ。僕達が知っている世界は、ホログラムかもしれないんだよ。実に興味深い考え方だから、それについての歌詞を書くことに決めたのさ。
Q4: How was the writing process? Your previous record “The Quantum Enigma” was really received well. How have you evolved or changed from that?
【MARK】: It was received very well and we wanted to keep working the same way and intensify and dive even more into details. We decided to record all instruments of the orchestra live this time. It was a big challenge as we had to do recording sessions for brass, strings, choirs, woodwinds, ethnic instruments, percussion etc. In the past we recorded choirs and strings line too but this time everything. I am happy we did as the end result is amazing.
Q4: ライティングプロセスはいかがでしたか？ 前作 “The Quantum Enigma” は非常に評価の高い作品でしたが、そこからどのように進化しましたか？
【MARK】: 前作が好評だったから、僕達は同じやり方を続けて、さらに細部まで拘り作り込みたかったんだ。今回は、オーケストラ全ての楽器を生で録音しようと決めたんだよ。大きなチャレンジだったね。ブラス、ストリングス、コーラス、木管楽器、民族楽器、パーカッションなど全てのレコーディングセッションを行わなければならなかったんだからね。
過去にはコーラスとストリングスはレコーディングしていたよ。だけど今回は全部だからね。結果として最高のものが出来たから、満足しているよ。
Q5: This is the second album with Joost Van Den Broek, and Jacob Hansen. Why did you continue this collaboration?
【MARK】: Like you mentioned “TQE” was received very well and we like working with those two guys. Besides that it’s important for us to keep this sound for a couple of albums. The decision to work together again was made very fast. Probably we’ll work with those guys again next time for the same reasons.
Q5: Joost Van Den Broek のプロデュース、Jacob Hansen のミキシングという形は前作と同じですね？
【MARK】: やはり、前作が成功を収めたというのもあって、彼らと働くのが気に入ったんだよ。それに加えて、このサウンドをアルバム2枚続けることが重要だったんだ。
彼らをまた起用するという決断は非常に早くなされたね。同じ理由で、おそらく次の作品でも彼らを起用するだろうね。
Q6: “Catchy” is a nice word, but lots of Symphonic Metal bands lost their identity instead of Catchy aspects. But Epica seems to go against that trend. I think that set you apart and makes Epica one of a kind. Do you agree that?
【MARK】: I agree, we always did swim against the flow, we never did what other people suggested us to do we always do what our heart tells us to do. We follow our intuition as that’s after all what makes you most happy. When we feel like writing a heavy song with brutal riffs we do so as it makes us feel good and go wild on it haha. We always listen to our music as if we were teenager again listening to our favourite metal albums.
Q6: 多くのシンフォメタルバンドが、”キャッチー”さと引き換えに、バンドのアイデンティティーを失いつつあるように感じます。EPICA はそういったトレンドとは相反する位置にいますね？
【MARK】: 同意するよ。僕達はいつも流れに逆らって泳いできたんだよ。他人の勧めに耳を貸したことはないし、常に僕達の心に従って来たんだよ。結局は、僕達の直感に従うことが、リスナーを最も満足させるのさ。
ブルータルなリフのヘヴィーな楽曲を書きたければそうするし、それは僕らだって怒ればスッキリするよ(笑) 僕達はいつも自分たちの音楽を、ティーンエイジャーに戻って大好きなメタルを聴いている時のように聴くんだよ。
Q7: Could you tell us about the most challenging song and the most typical Epica style song from “The Holographic Principle”?
【MARK】: The most challenging song I think is “Universal Death Squad”, it’s a challenge to play it and it’s full of twists. The most typical Epica song is “The Holographic Principle” itself it contains all ingredients what makes Epica Epica.
Q7: “The Holographic Principle” で最もチャレンジングな楽曲、最も EPICA らしい楽曲を教えてください。
【MARK】: 最もチャレンジングな楽曲は、”Universal Death Squad” だと思う。プレイするのも大変だし、展開も複雑だからね。逆に最も EPICA らしい楽曲はタイトルトラックの “The Holographic Principle” だね。EPICA を EPICA たらしめる全ての要素を含んでいるよ。
