ABOUT PER NILSSON
スウェーデンが誇る異能のギターマイスター Per Nilsson。現在、彼こそがメタル/プログコミュニティーで最も注目を集める怪物であることに異論を唱える向きはないでしょう。
モダンメタルの父、MESHUGGAH のマスターマインド Fredrik Thordendal が突然の “休暇” を申請したのは6月初頭のことでした。インタビューにもあるように、スタジオの建設とソロキャリア追求のためバンドを離れた求道者の代役として指名されたのが今回の主役、Per だったのです。実際、彼ほどの適任者は存在しないように思えます。
10代後半から MESHUGGAH を聴き漁り、リスペクトを捧げて来たという Per のギタープレイには、例えば彼のホームグラウンド SCAR SYMMETRY を聴けば分かるように、複雑でマスマティカルなリフワークや、レガートで滑らかにアウトするリードプレイなど、モダンメタルの巨人を想起させる場面が確かに存在します。
何より、亡き Allan Holdsworth の遺産を相続するのみならず、独自に進化させるプレイヤーはメタルの領域においてあまりに稀有で、オーディションも行わず Per を指名したバンドの英断には頷くばかりですね。
さらに Per が注目を集める理由。それは彼のフレキシブルな才能が可能とした、多方面での雄渾なる活躍です。多様でエクストリーム、実験性を秘めたモダンメタルを中枢としながらも、Per のセンス、スケール、そしてテクニックは様々な分野のアーティストを惹き付けてきました。
特にここ日本で絶大な人気を誇るメロディックメタルアクト NOCTURNAL RITES もその一つ。10年という長い沈黙を破るバンドの復活作 “Phoenix” で、ソロイストとして白羽の矢を立てたのが Per だったのです。インタビューにもあるように、トラディショナルでメロディーによりフォーカスした Per の新たな冒険は、バンドのマスターピースとして結実したようですね。9月のリリースを待ちましょう。
加えて、9月にはもう1枚 Per の参加したレコードがリリースされます。KAIPA の新作 “Children of the Sounds” です。70年代から活動を続ける、北欧シンフォプログの雄 KAIPA に Per が加入した事実はシーンに大きな驚きを与えました。実際、Per 自身が語るように、Roine Stolt の色彩と気品をメタルシュレッダーが引き継げるのだろうかという懐柔的な見方も多かったようですね。
しかし KAIPA の同僚で天賦のスティックマン Morgan Agren が、｢Per は非常に滑らかなタッチと完璧なコントロールを持っているね。彼が演奏するときは、すべてが簡単に聞こえるんだ。素晴らしいプレーヤーだよ。｣と語るように、Per のモダンなテクニックはバンドに新たな”血”をもたらし、スピードを備えたクラシカル、フォーキーなパッセージが壮麗なる推進力を生んでいるのは間違いないでしょう。
また、Per にはプロデューサーとしての顔も存在します。今ひとつ伸び悩んでいた自身のメインバンド SCAR SYMMETRY が、遂にそのステージを1歩進めた最新作 “The Singularity (Phase I – Neohumanity” では、Per がコンポジション、プロデュース、ミックス、マスタリング全てを手がけているのです。
非常にメロディックかつプログレッシブな方向へとシフトした作品が、脱退したギタリスト Jonas Kjellgren メインのプロダクションに比べよりクリアーで立体感を有していることは明らかですね。インタビューにもあるように、Per のスタジオも完成しトリロジーの第2章が幕を開ける瞬間も間近です。期待しましょう。
最後に Per がソロアルバム、ETERNITY’S END のプロダクションを手がけたテクニカルデスメタルシーンきってのテクニシャン Christian Muenzner は彼について ｢Per Nilssonはこれまでの10年間で最もエキサイティングなギタープレイヤーだよ。美しいフレーズとインテリジェントなノートの選択は、素晴らしい音色を運び完璧なまでに楽器のテクニカルな要求を満たすんだ。僕がギタリストのプレイに探しているものすべてを彼は持っているんだよ。｣と語っています。インテリジェンスを感じるのは当然かも知れません。Per の IQ は156を超えるとも言われており、あの高IQクラブ “メンサ” のメンバーなのですから。

INTERVIEW WITH PER NILSSON
Q1: Hi, Per! We, Japanese fans, are so happy to hear you’ll come to Japan with Meshuggah at Loud Park 17′!! Actually, you are one of the most popular guitar hero in Japan, and we have really waited for your coming! How do you feel now?
【PER】: I am absolutely thrilled about coming to Japan for the first time ever! I’ve heard a lot of great things about Loud Park, and about Japan in general and I can’t wait to experience it all. We’ve been trying to come to Japan with Scar Symmetry but so far it hasn’t worked out for different reasons, but I’m very excited of course to come with Meshuggah!
Q1: あなたが MESHUGGAH の一員として Loud Park 17′ に参加すると知りとても嬉しいです！実際、あなたは日本のギターファンが待ちわびていたヒーローの1人ですからね。
【PER】: 遂に、初めて日本に行けるんだ！とても興奮しているよ！Loud Park、そして日本の素晴らしさはずっと聞いてきたからね。待ちきれないよ。
SCAR SYMMETRY でも日本に行こうと努力して来たんだけど、今のところ様々な理由で実現していないんだ。ただ勿論 MESHUGGAH で行けるんだからとてもエキサイトしているよ！
Q2: Could you tell us how you joined Meshuggah? Fredrik seems to go to hiatus. When will he come back to the band?
【PER】: Tomas asked me six months ago if I would be interested to fill in for Fredrik for a while, it was as simple as that. No auditions or anything. Fredrik is on leave of absence to build his own music studio and work on his solo career, and to be honest I don’t know when he will come back, but I will most likely stay onboard for the duration of his hiatus. They’re already making some touring plans for 2018 that I’ve been asked to be a part of, and I’m happy to help the guys out. Meshuggah is one of my all-time favourite bands and Fredrik is one of my favourite metal guitar players so it’s an incredible honor for me to find myself in this position!
Q2: ではその MESHUGGAH 加入に至った経緯を話していただけますか？ Fredrik は一時的な離脱の様ですが、復帰はいつごろになるのでしょう？
【PER】: 半年前に、Tomas (Haake) がしばらく Fredrik の代役を務める気はないか尋ねてきたんだ。シンプルにそれだけなんだよ。オーディションのようなものもなかったね。
Fredrik が “休暇” を取ったのは、彼自身のスタジオを建ててソロキャリアを追求するためなんだ。そして、彼がいつ復帰するのか本当に僕は知らないんだよ。ただ、彼が不在の間はバンドに居る可能性が高いと思う。彼らはすでに2018年のツアー計画を立てていて、僕に帯同して欲しいと言っているんだ。彼らを手助け出来て嬉しいね。
MESHUGGAH は僕のオールタイムフェイバリットの一つだし、Fredrik はフェイバリットメタルギタリストの一人。だから僕がそのポジションに居るなんて、信じられないくらい光栄なことなんだ！
Q3: You seems to use your new strandberg 8 strings signature in the Meshuggah show. Until 2013, you were endorsed by Ibanez guitars. But now, you become a kind of the symbol of strandberg. How do you like the guitar?
【PER】: I absolutely, absolutely love all my Strandbergs, the new eight string prototype especially. It’s a multi-scale guitar with 24 True Temperament frets, Lundgren pickups, a beautiful blue and black swirl finish and a custom version of Strandberg’s own ‘Endurneck’ neck profile that is super smooth and so nice to play.
Q3: MESHUGGAH のショウでは新しいストランドバーグの8弦シグニチャーモデルを使用していますよね？
【PER】: 僕はね、本当に、本当に、僕の全てのストランドバーグギターを愛しているんだ。中でも特にこの新しい8弦プロトタイプをね。
マルチスケール(ファンフレット)の24トゥルーテンぺラメントフレット。ピックアップはラングレンで、青と黒の美しいマーブル塗装なんだよ。Strandberg の特徴である “Endurneck” はカスタムバージョンで、これが実にスムースで弾き心地が良いんだよ。
Q4: So, what’s Meshuggah to you? Have they influenced your music, rhythm approach, and guitar playing?
【PER】: Meshuggah is one of those few bands that have a unique, archetypal style and their importance to the evolution of metal music is immense. I started listening a lot to them in my late teens and much of what they did on their early albums, ‘None’ and ‘Destroy Erase Improve’ was very important and influential to my own musical evolution. Fredrik and I also both hold Allan Holdsworth as our number one favourite guitar player and we are both very much influenced by his work.
Q4: 先程、MESHUGGAH はフェイバリットバンドの一つだと仰いましたが、具体的にどのような影響を受けたのでしょう？
【PER】: MESHUGGAH はユニークかつ原型的なスタイルを誇る数少ないバンドの一つだよ。メタルの進化に果たした役割も多大なものがあるね。
僕は MESHUGGAH を10代後半から熱心に聴き始めたんだけど、その多くは初期の作品だったんだ。”None”, “Destroy Erase Improve” はとても重要で、僕自身の音楽的進化に影響をあたえたんだよ。
それに、Fredrik と僕は共に Allan Holdsworth がフェイバリットギタープレイヤーで、二人共彼の作品から実に大きな影響を受けているんだ。
Q5: Anyway, definitely you are one of the busiest person in the Metal/Prog scene. What made you join Nocturnal Rites’s resurrection? In fact, lot’s of fans seemed Nocturnal Rites was over. So, their comeback with you is very nice surprise for us! The first track “Before We Waste Away” is amazing! “Phoenix” seems to be masterpiece, right?
【PER】: I’ve been friends with the Nocturnal guys for many years and they are one of my favourite melodic metal bands, so when they asked me to play leads on their new album I said yes immediately! They’ve put together an amazing album and in my opinion it is their best one yet, the songwriting is just incredible and Jonny sings better than ever. Also I’m a big of fan of Nils Norberg’s ultra melodic playing, I’ve really enjoyed playing in that style myself on this album.
Q5: 間違いなくあなたはメタル/プログシーンで最も多忙な人物の1人ですね。NOCTURNAL RITES 10年ぶりの復活にも名を連ねています。
【PER】: 彼らとは何年も前からの友人だったんだ。何より大好きなメロディックメタルバンドだったからね。だから新作でリードギターを弾いて欲しいと頼まれたら、即座にOKしていたよ！
彼らは素晴らしいアルバムを作り上げたね。僕の考えでは、これまでの作品でベストだよ。ソングライティングは驚異的だし、Jonny の歌唱もさらに良くなっているね。加えて僕は、Nils Norberg のメロディックなギターの大ファンなんだ。このアルバムでは、僕自身もそういったスタイルでのプレイを満喫したね。
Q6: Adding that, you’ll release Kaipa’s new record “Children of the Sounds”. Kaipa is kind of super band, because Morgan, Jonas, and you are the virtuosos in the scene. When you joined Kaipa as the successor of Roine, I was so surprised, haha. How was the recording process? What kind of record will it be?
【PER】: Yeah I think a lot of people was surprised when I joined, as back then people only knew me as a death metal guitar player. The recording process was the same as usual, we all recorded our parts in our own studios and sent audio files back and forth online, which is actually a very exciting way of working to me, and everyone can really take their time recording their parts to make sure the songs all turn out perfect. Stylistically, the record isn’t much different from previous Kaipa albums but I think that Hans Lundin’s compositional work is more focused than ever before, the album is just full of beautiful melodies and intricate arrangements.
Q6: さらに9月には KAIPA の新作 “Children of the Sounds” もリリースされますね！あなたが KAIPA に加入した時は驚きましたよ。
【PER】: うん、僕が KAIPA に加入した時はたくさんの人が驚いたと思うよ。当時はデスメタルのギタリストという認識だっただろうからね。
今回のレコーディングプロセスもいつもと同じやり方だったよ。全員が各自のスタジオで自分のパートを録音し、オーディオファイルでやり取りしたんだ。実際、この方法は僕にとって実にエキサイティングなんだよ。みんなが自身のパートのみに時間を費やせるし、楽曲をより完璧に仕上げることが出来るね。
スタイル的に、このレコードは以前の KAIPA 作品とあまり違いはないんだけど、Hans Lundin のコンポジションはよりフォーカスされていて、それにより美しいメロディーと複雑なアレンジメントに満ちた作品に仕上がったよ。
Q7: Meshuggah, Nocturnal Rites, Kaipa are very different styles of music. Is it natural for you to play such a wide range of bands in a parallel way?
【PER】: I grew up listening to all sorts of music, and early on I played different styles. I got into metal around the same time as I started playing guitar, at 10, but I often joined my dad’s band at their rehearsals playing 50s and 60s covers, and the first couple of bands I had with friends covered songs by Beatles, U2, The Doors and so on since I was the only one really interested in metal at that time. I started taking guitar lessons as soon as I had started playing and the teachers I had all subjected me to a lot of jazz and fusion, and to music theory, all the while I was figuring out how to play metal on my own using only my ears, so I really did get a pretty wide musical knowledge base early on.
Q7: MESHUGGAH, NOCTURNAL RITES, KAIPA。異なる音楽的スタイルで並行して活動を続けるのも、あなたにととっては自然なことなのですね？
【PER】: 僕は全てのジャンルの音楽を聴いて育ったんだ。 そして早い段階から異なるスタイルでプレイしていたね。
ギターを始めた10歳の頃はメタルにのめり込んでいたんだけど、同時にしばしば父のバンドに加わって、彼らのリハーサルで50’sや60’s のカバーをプレイしていたんだ。それに友人と最初に作ったいくつかのバンドでは、THE BEATLES, U2, THE DOORS なんかをカバーしていたんだよ。僕しかメタルに興味がなかったからなんだけど。
僕はギターを始めるやいなや、レッスンも受け始めたんだけど、先生が僕とジャズ/フュージョン、音楽理論を繋げてくれたんだ。そうして自分の耳だけを使って自分のメタルを演奏する方法を考え出していったんだね。だからこそ、早くから幅広い音楽の知識を得ることが出来たんだ。
Q8: So, what is the situation of your home ground, Scar Symmetry? “The Singularity (Phase I – Neohumanity)” was the first album of the Singularity trilogy, and the first Scar Symmetry album to be composed, produced, mixed and mastered entirely by you. It seems you are recording the “Phase Ⅱ”, right?
【PER】: Yes, I’m pretty far along with the work on Phase II. It has taken a lot of time to record this album because after Phase I, I launched my own studio business and started doing production work for other bands and artists and that has taken up a lot of my time and energy. My main goal now is to finish up Phase II so that I can start working on the final part of the Singularity trilogy.
Phase I is the most progressive and melodic album we’ve ever done with Scar Symmetry, but Phase II goes off in a very different direction – it’s by far the heaviest, darkest and most brutal set of songs we’ve ever recorded. It still has got plenty of melodies, keyboards and solos, but generally speaking it is a very different album from Phase I. Then again, Phase III will be very different from both Phase I and II…
Q8: あなたのホームグラウンド、SCAR SYMMETRY の状況はいかがですか？前作 “The Singularity (Phase I – Neohumanity” は “Singularity” トリロジーの1作目で、現在は “Phase Ⅱ” のレコーディングを行っているところだと思いますが？
【PER】: その通りだよ。 “Phase Ⅱ” の作業はかなり進展して来ているよ。この作品が遅れているのには理由があってね。”Phase Ⅰ”の後、僕は自分のスタジオビジネスを立ち上げて、他のバンドやアーティストのプロダクションを始めたから、そこに膨大な時間とエナジーを費やしたんだ。今の目標は、”Phase Ⅱ” を完成させて、”Singularity” トリロジーの最終章に取り掛かることなんだよ。
“Phase Ⅰ”は SCAR SYMMETRY にとって最もプログレッシブかつメロディックな作品だったね。だけど “Phase Ⅱ” ではかなり異なる方向に進むんだ。今のところ、僕たちにとって最もヘヴィーで、ダークで、ブルータルな楽曲が揃っているよ。とはいえ、メロディー、キーボード、リードプレイも十二分に備えているんだけどね。ただ、客観的には “Phase Ⅰ” とは大きく異なる作品だと言えるだろう。さらに “Phase Ⅲ” は、”Phase Ⅰ”、”Phase Ⅱ” ともまた全然違う作品となるはずだよ…
Q9: You have participated in a lot of works as guest player. Is there any album that is particularly remembered?
【PER】: I love David Maxim Micic’s ‘Bilo 3.0’ album, that guy is a musical genius, and I really like how my solo for his song ‘Wrinkle Maze’ came out, I’m super proud of that one.
Q9: 最後に、あなたは様々なバンド、アーティストの作品にゲスト参加して来ましたが、中でも印象に残っているものを教えてください。
【PER】: David Maxim Micic の “Bilo 3.0” が大好きなんだ。彼は音楽の天才だね。それに、彼の楽曲 “Wrinkle Maze” の中で僕のソロが現れる場面が気に入っているんだ。これに関しては、最高に誇りに思っているよ。
